The staff is friendly and it's right on the bay, which is a nice touristy spot. Â The food was overpriced and not really what I was expecting for the price. Â There are definitely better places to go to if you are wanting some good seafood, and not wanting to hand over body parts to pay for it
Review Source:I seldom write a review but I must in this case. Maybe 10 or more years ago, Stoney's was picked for the best crab cake in the Wash DC area and I agreed the times I went, but that was 6 or more years ago and yesterday they now have the worst crab cake I've ever tried to eat. It was dry, over cooked and mostly bread filling. It's was pathetic. The service was good and the steamed crabs were good. Â The crab soup (tomato based) was very good.
Review Source:I love coming to Stoney's after a day of being out on the boat. We always drive right up, dock and pick a table. Usually the service is pretty fast but this past weekend it was ridiculously slow. The drinks are always strong and definitely worth the money, I think their specialty is the orange crush but they're not my fav. I did try I think a cherry lime drink which was also really good and not super sweet like you'd think, it was perfect. My family ordered the cheeseburger sliders which came with 4 burgers topped with cheese and caramelized onions. They were soooooo good! I don't usually like getting hamburgers out but those were the best little bites I've ever had, made me want to order a big one for my meal. It was so juicy and cheesy and the onions were delish! The crab cake platter for the day was $28 with two 5oz crab cakes and 2 sides. I went with the corn on the cobb and the green beans. Both sides were so bland and blah! How do you make bad corn on the cob?! It had a funny taste and I couldn't figure it out, maybe some lemon got on it? Just weird. The crab bakes were a good size, my mom's crab cake sandwich was huge! I believe 8oz? Although the crab cakes were voted Best Crab Cakes by Washington Post, I have to disagree. There was a little more filler and they looked a little smaller than normal. The waiter did say that there has been a shortage of crabs this summer so makes sense... but the price for less crabmeat doesn't! Beautiful view right on the water and they always have events or live music, definitely worth checking out for a fun night at the bar.
Review Source:The food was good -- yummy crabs, though not the best price in the area, and the steamed shrimp were great, but the service and experience were terrible. Had to wait to be seated, then, with two small children we were seated in the bar area with SMOKERS -- we weren't even told we were being seated in the smoking section. Â Took forever just to get drinks and menus. Took another forever to get the food. Server apologized but didn't offer us any perks - an extra appetizer, etc. Served drinks to our small kids in HUGE glasses that they both eventually spilled. Â Once we were done, the check came before the dessert came out. We asked for coffee and were told by our server "I don't think we have any made!" Â As we were shuffled out, we noticed two huge pots of coffee ready to go. Â Clearly they just wanted us out as soon as possible. It was a busy weekend night and it felt like the whole restaurant was caught unprepared. Â We had a large tab b/c of the crabs -- definitely didn't feel like we got service to match the prices. Too bad. Great location. Try someplace else.
Review Source:I used to live in Calvert County and frequented Stoney's.
I spent the day at the beach at Flag Pond and stopped by Stoney's after for dinner.
I had steamed mussels which were very good. Also the Brooms Island crab soup is awesome.
The staff though needs some coaching. Â They were literally running around the restaurant. Â Unfortunately It does not create a very relaxing atmosphere to match the very relaxing location and views.
My husband and I wanted a special dinner with friends to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. Â We arrived early to have drinks and wait for a table for 7. Â The sole bartender was the owner and I guess she was over stressed and was actually mean to my guests. Â She forced them to start a tab when they were only having one drink, and their martinis came back terrible and with unidentifiable particulate matter floating in them. Â Seriously? Â At close to $10 a drink you can't even be bothered to make them properly? Â Â I was furious. Â I asked the very sweet hostess to seat us at a lesser table so that my guests did not have to deal with that woman again. Â So much for a special evening with friends. Â Honey, if you own the place, get some help behind the bar and get out there and be sweet to your guests. Â Then they might come back. Â We certainly won't. Â The view is lovely there, no question. Â However the food and the service doesn't live up to it. Â We'll be at Jerry's.
Review Source:In a word, it is "ok".
As others have commented, the crab cakes are killer and by far the best thing on the menu. Â After that...well, average at best which is disappointing given the cost.
The location is very nice, at the waters edge, nice deck you can eat out on, etc. Â However paper plates, plastic utensils, etc just YUCK ; Â given the price just beyond tacky.
Overall, overpriced for what you get.
This location is really a beautiful place at tucked quietly away at the water's edge. The atmosphere is pleasant and things appeared to be clean. Our lunch was ok. We didn't enjoy the crab cakes as much as we had at Stoney's Kingfishers (a related location a few miles down the road) a few years earlier. The taste of the crabcakes left much to be desired. I've had better from grocery stores. The wait staff was friendly and helpful. In the end, I found the food to be priced a little higher than the quality of ingredients and taste (ie. $14 for a pretty ordinary salad a with chicken?) I wouldn't go out of my way to visit here again, but would go back in a group or something.
Review Source:My family and friends have been going to Stoney's for a long time (18 years for me). Â I live right up the road. Â For the first 16 years or so, I've rarely been disappointed. Â I get the crab cakes everytime and they used to truly live up to my expectations (rave reviews in Washington areas newspapers and Gourmet magazine were well deserved). Â I was always served one huge ball of lump crab meat with minimal fillers and a crispy fried exterior that was to die for. Â Fries and coleslaw were good too. Â In the last couple of years though, food quality has been noticeably getting worse.
Last weekend, we went there for the last time. Â The hostess who sat us was pleasant. Â Our waitress was as well. Â After that, it is all down hill. Â First of all, the acoustics of the dining room coupled with very loud people made for a mind numbing experience. Â I couldn't hear normal conversation at our table it was so loud. Â Second, as usual, I got the crab cake entree. Â For about $30, I got two small cakes, cold limp french fries, and off tasting coleslaw (served in a plastic basket!!) Â The oil used to fry the cakes and fries must not have been changed in a while, so they had an off taste as well. Â Finally, that evening, everyone in our party of eight was complaining of upset stomachs and one person even had some sort of allergic reaction.
Never again. Â A beautiful location, mostly nice staff, but horrible food. Â Too bad they ran this into the ground. Â I'm going to stick to making my own crab cakes from now on.
We came here for a late lunch and it was a disappointment. Lets start with the polystyrene plates. For the prices they charge how about using real plates? If you are eating outside they blow off the table and in to the bay. Stoney's, don't you think there is enough trash in the bay already?
We ordered the oysters on the half shell for a starter. The guy who sucked them got a lot of broken shell in them. I had the chicken Cesar salad and ordered a cup of the crab soup. I asked for the dressing on the side. The salad came with dressing on it and a cup of dressing on the side. The place was not packed, there were only three other parties in the restaurant. My soup never came and our server never checked back with us after she served us because she was to busy talking to some of the other waitresses.
My hubby ordered the snow crab legs. They were over cooked and sticking in the shell.
When we got the bill the soup that I never receive was on the check and I asked the server to remove it because she never brought it. She did not even apologize for not bringing the soup. What an idiot.
The bill for the two of us with two beers each was $96.00. There was a nice view from the deck and I guess that was what we were paying for. It certainly wasn't the food or the service.
Its certainly a little taste of southern md atmostsphere but not necessarily the food. They are getting greedy and focusing on the commercialization of their brand and with that comes more upper level managerial control over the kitchens. This leads to pinchy pennies to fatten the bottom line. I guarantee that the only crabs you can get from stoneys that are actually from southern md are the whole blue crabs. Any other dish that has picked crab in it is from China or Vietnam. To get some real southern md crabs you have to look more local, smaller, and potetially by the roadside. That's just my opinion but I did live on Broomes Island about 200 yards from the original stoneys. By the way the one on Broomes Island is seasonal, just an fyi.
Review Source:Stoney's is fantastic! Â It's really the atmosphere and the location that make it a 5 star place, although the food is quite good too. Â It was exactly what we were looking for on a recent weekend trip to the Bay. Â We wanted a casual, affordable, festive, waterside seafood restaurant with good food and a fun atmosphere, and this place fit the bill perfectly! Â We lucked out and got a table right next to the water on one of the decks and had a great time watching people arrive and leave on their boats and jet skis. Â There is a very relaxed, beachy atmosphere to the place, along the lines of what I imagine Key West to be like (only without the clear water and palm trees). Â Our poor waitress was a little harried, as the place was packed and they appeared to be understaffed. Â However, she was as nice and attentive as possible and, though she forgot one or two things, she managed our large group as well as could reasonably be expected under the circumstances. Â And let's not forget -- the food was very good and reasonably priced. Â Their menu has all the classic items one would expect of a Maryland seafood house along with some more interesting items as well. Â We were told that crab cakes are their specialty, and rightly so. Â The jumbo lump crab meat was plentiful with minimal filler. Â The softshell crab stuffed with crab imperial that a friend ordered looked decadent. Â The raw oysters, oysters rockefeller, and fried rockfish bites were all very good as well. Â Their fried foods, like the crab balls, fried shrimp, and onion rings, were light and crispy and tasty (unlike the greasy mess we had at another restaurant in nearby Solomons). Â Also, adults should be sure to try their "crush" vodka drinks, which come in a variety of flavors and are light and refreshing and delicious -- a perfect waterside cocktail.
I can't wait to go back the next time I need a dose of their relaxed beach atmosphere, water views, and good crabcakes! Â Although not far from DC, it feels like it is worlds away -- which is a good thing!
Where does a Southern Marylander go to get a crabcake?
Stoney's.
And when you want to mix it with a nice dockbar, friendly locals and a slice of historic, visceral, old SoMD?
Stoney's on Broome's Island.
Like all things post Isabelle (and post Frederick), Stoney's received a face-lift and came back better than ever. The deck and outdoor bar are brand-spankin' new, there's plenty of room to dock your boat if you come by water, and parking if you drive in. The drive down into Broome's Island is a pretty one and the restaurant sits on a prime point on the water.
The menu has changed a bit this year, but the staple, the Stoney's Crabcake, remains the same. The little one is just right and the big version could choke a pony. And they're FULL OF CRAB. Stoney's doesn't mess around with the jewel in their crustacean crown...this is the quintessential crab cake.
I can also state with confidence, that the BEST crabfeast I've ever had was enjoyed her in early September. The crabs were so full and fat...I thought I'd died and gone to heaven.
Dining inside is as good as outside thanks to the huge windows that were installed with the recent renovation. Outside is always preferable, but take care in the evenings...the black flies and flying-teeth can make waterside dining unbearable when they're in season.
The outdoor bar is a nice edition...it's covered and central, so you can see everything going on around you.
The Broome's Island location is a seasonal operation, so, as it was stated before...call ahead, just in case. I'm not completely sure, but if I remember correctly, October is the closing date.
This is the place to go for seafood, especially the crab cakes. Â This is the original Stoney's that has now expanded with a couple of other locations and still the best of them all. Â It is worth the drive. Â Go by boat if you can. Â They have lots of outdoor dining on the water. Â But be advised, they are only open in-season so call ahead to be sure.
