This place is an old school drive-in, but honestly it's kind of a cheap Sonic. Corn dogs for $1.30, Cheese sticks for $2, etc. So, of course I like it cuz I'm a cheapo.
I've been by a couple times on my way to see my sister in Abilene and I've had a burger, cheese sticks, some fries, and fried mushrooms. These were all worth the small amount of money you are charged for them, so what's to lose? It's a nice alternative to the other fast food options on the route.
Don't go out of your way to get to Storm's, but if you are hungry on a road trip I'd stop by. But one more thing... If you are afraid of bees you might want to steer clear. SO MANY BEES!!! I'd recommend they clean the trash cans or clear them more often???
My girlfriend always talks about this place. Â (she used to live here). Â For a fast food place, the burger was very good. Â Great taste, perfectly cooked, and came out hot. Â The fries were yummy too, they tasted fresh, not frozen, and weren't soggy. Â If I lived here I would definitely make this a stop for a treat.
Review Source:I wish I could write a great review. This is the kind of place that should be wonderful. Maybe my one visit was an aberration.
Biggest issue: the patties should have been seasoned. They were blah. They needed plain old salt and pepper. That's as basic as it gets. I should point out that I'm a low-salt guy and seldom feel the need to add salt to my food. So these were pretty bland. Meat should be properly seasoned before it is cooked; that's how you get the best flavor. (If the cook/chef isn't supposed to season the meat, what the hell is he supposed to do?)
I like the idea of skinny one-sixth-pound patties. A double is one-third, a triple is a half-pound. Patties that thin can take a swell sear on the griddle, giving a flavorful caramelized finish. Layer some cheese in between the patties, toss on some grilled onions and you're in Heaven. A+ concept, and Storm's cooked mine correctly.
But. When you go the skinny patty route, be sure that the fixin's are in proportion. I found Storm's burger to be overwhelmed by too-generous portions of lettuce, tomato, etc. The bun was too thick. It feels weird to complain about too much of a good thing, but there you have it. Next time I would go with nothing but grilled onions. (I see a picture of a nice, flat, squishy bun with no LTO on the Storm's review page; mine wasn't like that.)
For perfection in the skinny-patty division, check out the original Winstead's in Kansas City. Better yet, if you have time, check out the original Winsteads's thirty years ago.
Hand-cut fries were wonderful. No complaints. Onion rings seemed to have come out of a bag. If they're breaded/battered in-house, then it's time for a new recipe. Chocolate shake was not so very chocolatey. America is in chocolate-shake decline.
Car-hop service was terrific.
The exterior, which you stare at while munching your burger, was grungy. A power wash and some paint would be a good idea. Fix up the menu-display pylons, which need maintenance. All of which is to say that this classic old burger joint is showing its age.
Thanks again yelpers.
This was good, but it's not some foodie spot so if you're looking for your moms burger bar or Hopdoddy keep driving.
If your looking for quick and tasty non chain fast food this is it. Â I got the special, Â thin patties, Â nice toasty but not super buttery bun it was just right. Â The fries tasted fresh and were thicker. Â Super big and we'll carbonated fountain drinks atop good small crushed ice.
Cruise past dq, mickey d's, Â and sonic and show the little guy some love. Â My girlfriend was surprised, so you might be too!
Good old-fashioned drive in! I had not been here in years but was delighted to find it is still great. Â Storms offers no-nonsense burgers with quality meat. The french fries are perfection, cooked at just the right temperature-fresh cut, hot, and not greasy. This is about as good as fast food gets.
Review Source:The food is good, but on my last trip, the car hop gave my check card to another customer. The manager was not on the premises, so I was left dealing with the fry cook who didn't think to call the bank of the card that was left with them to have that person notified that they walked off with someone else's card. I then reviewed my banking information and found that my card had been swiped, but they weren't sure when it would be refunded because the guy didn't know when the manger would be there. So, if you're going to eat at Storm's, bring plenty of cash, it's a little overpriced for the service you get.
Review Source:Storm's is a Hill Country favorite. Â I recommend stopping in to this location if you happen to be traveling through Lampasas. Â You can probably find better food in the area, and you might find a place with a more interesting atmosphere, but I think the Storm's franchises in this part of country speak volumes about the culture. Â People are laid back to the point that it is not being overly-friendly; rather, the attitude seems to be more along "taking life as it comes." Â I don't really have a point to make regarding my social commentary, so on to the important part.
The meat patties on the double cheeseburger are razor thin, but well seasoned. Â The offerings here are priced well, and Mrs. B and I had our own burgers and split a large fry and a HUGE Dr. Pepper for around $10. Â By the way, the crushed ice included always makes for a better soft drink experience. Â Overall good experience stopping in at Storm's.
I don't think this is entirely biased but since I saw Boots show up and another yelper Joey K speak to us mortals not knowing of Storm's I had to pipe up. Â I will stash my Storm's ball cap (given to me by a Storm) and tell ya what I thought regardless.
This is truly a family started "chain" of drive-ins and yes, the family's last name is Storm. Â It's not meant to be kitschy. Â I'm not positive if this has really reached multi-generational or not, but come to think of it I'm going to ask out of my own curiosity.
*Edit* - It is multigenerational, dunno when Robbis is going go retire but he's been running it for 40 yrs ;)
Storms is down-home fresh, greasy and tasty burgers. Â IMO what sets them apart is the salad dressing and the flavor from the griddle. Â Just like Boot's has the griddle and the hot relish, this place is the dressing, meat quality and griddle. Â You just can't duplicate without YEARS of effort the seasoning of a truly blessed griddle. Â Add in that the folks are generally down-home small town Texas and friendly the surrounding Hill Country just sets it off right.
I, too, wish there was a Storm's out our way. Â Would be pretty tough to franchise it out here... too many Sonic's that the nuances would probably fall on deaf palates.
A 4 star rating? Ok, worth checking out, right? Wrong. Small town folk dont know good food, especially if this is one of the 5 restaurants in town. Austinites? Well, you like the quirky weird places surrounding your city, so Im going to have to disagree with you all. This is a re-branded Sonic without the servers on skates, good fast food, and worst of all have zero organization with servers running around like chickens with their heads cut off.
This is just another small town greasy fast food restaurant with nothing really special besides being a small town greasy fast food restaurant.
I've got 99 restaurants and Storm's aint one, hit me!
Why does this burger not have shrines built to it? Or atleast have a spot right next to Kellers and Whataburger in Texas burger lore? I mean son of a bitch this freaking burger was amazing...and so were the fries!!!
Whilst taking the family on a road trip to Hill Country I stumbled upon this restaurant simply because my buddy told me that Hwy 281 was the scenic route from Dallas to Marble Falls. 281 is definitely the scenic route, however I also believe it is the death route, I mean people are driving at 85 miles an hour past each other on a single lane highway! Pretty scary stuff for this brand new father, needless to say my drive to Marble Falls was wholey white knuckled.
I am glad there was lots of construction going on in this town or we would have never slowed down enough to be able to catch a glimpse of the oldschool looking drive-in.
I looked at my girl and said, " Babe I know we just had some sandwiches about an hour ago, but we ARE NOT driving back this way and this place looks like its been around for about 60 years, I think we should split a burger and try them out." Needless to say she agreed.
I perused the menu and saw the" Storms Special": 3 patties, slice of  cheese, mustard, onions, tomato and lettuce w fries for 6 bucks. It also advertised you could get salad dressing, catsup and pickles if you like, we will make it how you want it. I was thinking three patties was alot until I deduced from the picture they were like the 1/5lb slips used by Kellers.
I hit that little metal order button so hard I almost broke my finger
I decided to go with salad dressing and pickles so I could have a close comparison to a Keller's Special #5, sans grilled onions :( .
After about a 5 minute wait,  the very nice carhop brought my order and said that'll be $7.50! I was like say what? What did I order? "The Storm special with double cheese"
" Oh, thought I ordered single cheese, no big, but thats kinda high for a fast food burger"
" We raised our prices last week"
" Well no worries" replied I , " Damn those ethanol producers and gas prices to hell"
I paid for my food and kicked in a two dollar tip for her ( remember Im a waiter and karmas a bitch)
When I opened the bag I could tell why this thing cost so much, apparently my math was off a tad because Storms GRINDS THEIR OWN TEXAS BEEF IN HOUSE DAILY!!! This mother was the exact size of a double whataburger!
I took my first bite and was completely blown away!
The three slips of beef had an AMAZINGLY fresh beefy flavor and do to the thinness of the patties had a high ratio of crispy outside grillshined crust. Lots of good black pepper flavor in the salad dressing I think and the produce was very fresh as well. Oh man and the cheese, never ever ever order this thing with a single slice. The two slices created the perfect meat to cheese to bun ratio and had to be some of the most flavorful american cheese slices I have ever tasted. Fries are fresh cut AND battered style, but play mind tricks on you because at first sight they are kind of pale and feel soggy in your hand. Not so when you bite into these babies, they have a hella good crispy crunch.
Yes these burgers are greasy! Whenever I hear someone say a burger is to greasy, I normally drop kick them in the face and then take there greasy burger and eat it over them while the grease runs down my elbow onto their face. Its a fucking burger, its suppose to be greasy!
I just dont understand how this little chain has never been featured in Texas Monthly or on anyones top burgers list? I mean its been in Texas for over 60 years now and is certainly up there with ANY of the top burgers in Texas...nay the world!
Only think I could think of  ( and why Im giving 4 stars), their bathroom must surely have never been cleaned or repaired since they opened 60 years ago.  Which may make you question the food, but fortune favors the bold.
First I would like to start off with the fact that I LOVE hamburgers. I cannot get enough of them. Which takes me to my second point of Storm's Burgers. I go to Texas Tech which is way up in the bottom of the panhandle, Lubbock, and since I'm from Houston, it is quite the drive, with many small towns in between. One that happens to be Lampasas. While I know there are many routes to take to and from H-Town to the LBK, I choose the ATX route, keeps me awake for the 9 hour drive. While there are many different choices to stop and eat at, I always choose Storm's and while I make the drive every once in a while, the people have come to know me. Last time I came through, I was asked how my family was and how my visit to Houston was!!! Crazy crazy! I absolutely love it!
Here I can get a burger, fries and drink for all under $7. Freaking amazing if you ask me, especially for the size of the burger, the amount of fries and the great tasting cola with good ice. The bun is toasted to perfection EVERY time. My burger is steaming, along with my fries EVERY time. And the Drive-In service is always spot on!
While it might not be a place you drive through all too often, or ever, or if you have to choose a route. Choose the route that "takes you by Storms." You will not be disappointed!!!
I have been told by numerous people to try Storm's Drive-In & 2 days ago, I finally did.
It was okay, nothing special. Â I actually ordered the "Storm's Special" which is a double cheeseburger. Â I know this is gonna chap a few folks that really like the place, but to me, it tasted like Sonic. Â I tasted nothing special about it. Â It was just basically a greasy burger (nothing wrong with that), but I guess since it had been hyped for me, I was expecting better. Â I don't think I'll go back.
I will say, for something positive, the girl that was the server/(carhop?) was extremely nice & cheerful. Â That was very pleasant & Â I did appreciate her attitude. Â It is always better when the employees are friendly! Â
So, kudos for service........... that's about all.
20% recommend, because there is a Sonic down the street that is about $2 cheaper.
The food here is definitely a cut above the typical drive in and head and shoulders a better experience than, say, Sonic. I usually don't care much for fast food fries, but these are way above average. Burgers are greasy in a good way. You can tell that the meat is fresh. Tasty. They have some unusual drive in items like cordon bleu burger. Gonna try it next time. The car hops are sweet Texas girls and make you feel very welcome.
Review Source:Yessir, what we got here is an old time drive-in ...
Burgers, Fries, and Coca-Cola ... aaahhh, make that a Dr Pepper ... these are the core ingredients of Storm's, the essential building blocks, the three main food groups if you will of roadfood itself, the heavy-heavy fuel demanded by our nation of car-commuting fast-food connoisseurs.
Meanwhile, old-fashioned electronic menu ordering boxes and dine-in-your-car service with carhops creates a unique atmosphere reminiscent of the early years of Texas dining under the stars. Anything could happen here ...
Never mind the grease and the good old boys, Bubba. They are just part of the experience. Go on, you can handle a little bit more cholesterol! Take a big bite of that double chili burger, a long soothing sip of that malt, and ease back into the Corinthian leather of your dining-room-on-wheels to experience a soon-to-be-gone slice of American nostalgia.
i havent been here in about 10 or 11 years, but from what i do remember we would stop  by here everytime we came back from camping out in aransas pass down there by corpus i think?? anyways from what i remember it was greasy and the fries were freakin good...this place is really out of the way for the avg townie, but if you want to check out the old missions and courthouses in texas take route and get a dose of culture stop by storms (if its still there)
Review Source:Road trip greasy burgers and fries and a Big Malt to wash it down.
That's what I'm talk_n about and that's what Storm's is about.
I don't know how long they've been around, but it reminds me of 50's and sixties burger joints.
If you are bothered by good-ole boys, you'll be bothered by storms, it seems to draw farm boys, hunters and an mixture of townies.
It's down home good.
