Great neighborhood go to!! Fish Tacos are delish...full bar, nice and airy building, food is yummy and reasonable! Wait staff is nice...but if it is busy, don't expect snappy service. Has high ceilings so noise can be a problem which can be solved by sitting outside. I eat there once a month and I enjoy it every time.
Review Source:I went to this establishment during the first ever Pleasure Point Street Fair. I don't think anyone thought it was going to be that busy. Which may explain the reason Suda was taking 30+ minutes to order a drink! The bartenders were knee deep in tickets and unable to keep up with the heavy load of drink orders. Our group of 8 were lucky to snag a patio table outside. Too bad we had to flag down a server who tried to make us go to the bar to order. One amazing thing I had was a Moscow Mule (Russian vodka, lime, and ginger beer), it was very refreshing and tasted suburb. The next day I went to check my bank statement and found that I had been charged twice. I called the establishment and they actually took care of it in a very professional matter. I just looked at my bank statement and found that they have still not credited my account, so I will be calling NOW. The servers were overwhelmed, the bartenders were over whelmed... They have to be more prepared next time. Too bad there prolly will not be another opportunity for me to visit.
Review Source:I am not sure what the 2-star reviews on Suda are all about - perhaps the restaurant as a whole has improved dramatically since those reviews were written? My husband and I really enjoyed this place!
The Hubs and I went to Suda on whim last Friday night, around 7pm - the place was full but not over-crowded. We only waited for about 10 minutes for a table. We really liked the ambience of the restaurant too - artsy, cozy and clean.
Our waiter was polite but friendly. My husband (a self-proclaimed burger connoisseur) loved his beef burger and fries. And though I am not a vegetarian, I went a bit rogue: I ordered the Sweet Potato Tacos on flour tortillas, which consisted of sweet potatoes, cabbage, beans and a yummy yogurt sauce. SO DELISH! I can never finish everything on my plate at restaurants, but I finished these with no problem because the flavors were amazing. I scarfed them down. I highly recommend that dish!
Take the negative reviews on Suda with a grain of salt - try the place out for yourself and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
I tired this place with some friends on Tuesday, for lunch, while our kids played next door at June Bug's Gym. The food was tasty but our waiter was either stoned, unorganized or both. There were only a few other tables in the place and he was the only one that we saw on the floor besides a bartender. First, he took a while to get our order, seemed unclear on the specials and then when he offered my friend a sample of the curry carrot soup he forgot to bring her a spoon. Her soup was mighty good and I would order it again. I got the veggie sandwich which was amazing and stacked full of roasted beats, avocados, sprouts, lettuce, tomatoes and cream cheese. I opted for the other soup of the day which was tomato fennel and delicious as well. Our third friend ordered the tomato fennel soup as well but he brought her the carrot curry instead. Unfortunately, she is not a fan of curry but by the time we flagged him down they were out of tomato. Which I find a little crazy since they only had about 4 other tables in the whole place. I would not single this place out to go again but might give it another try out of convenience since it is next door to the gym.
Review Source:I love Suda! Â They have some terrific, unique food that is fresh and so delicious. Â The baked brie, tuna tower and fish tacos are a few of my favorites. Â It has a lively atmosphere and the decor is unique and beautiful. I particularly love the repurposed wood wall by the bar. Â Oh and I love the cocktails!
Review Source:My daughter and I went to Suda on a Sunday afternoon, about 2:00 a couple of weeks ago.  We have some friends who really recommended it.  There was just  the two of us, and another table of two,
We found the food to be great!  Very fresh and excellent. We ordered the tacos, sliders on gluten free bread ( I think on this one), and the Greek salad. We had sweet  potato fries, and were very impressed. We liked the ambiance too.
Sadly, the service was VERY POOR! Â We had a nice young girl with long blonde hair, but she took FOREVER to bring us our drinks, and when the food finally came, we asked for another plate, which she said she would be right back with. Â She never came back, and we had to get up and go find one for ourselves. Â No refills on any of our iced teas or water. Â She seemed to hang out near the kitchen, and was not attentive to us, or the other couple. Â
Since we did love everything else, we will try it again I am sure, but the service is an integral part of any business, so I hope the management will step it up in this area. Two strikes, and they will be out next time, for us.
Lunch was  good but not great. We split a Suda salad. The veggies were fresh, tasty, and varied, the miso-plum dressing (recommended by our server) good, but there wasn't much to unify the vegetables into more than a big plate full of lettuce and raw julienned vegetables.
I asked about the "catch of the day," as I was considering the fish tacos and another dish with a fish option. Well, it turned out that the COTD was salmon for some dishes, and snapper for the fish tacos. Confusing. I ended up ordering  a dish with mixed veggies and quinoa, with salmon on top. Like my girlfriend's sweet potato tacos, my dish was tasty, but  there wasn't a "stick to your ribs" satisfaction after eating it. No real "Wow" factor. The sweet potato in the tacos was, shall we say, al dente--not.cooked long enough, in our opinion.
Service and ambience were good.
Never eaten here so I'm rating the establishments nightlife. Â Nightlife in Capitola is horrendous. Â This place has good intentions and so far the best thing it has going is a touch of class which keeps out the village crowd, and actually has the ability to draw in the opposite sex (I am a male). Â
That's about all it has going, though. Â The owner needs to fire the entire staff and get some fun young people who also have the ability to draw a mediocre crowd. Â Every time I've been here, half of the staff is buried in their phones texting and look absolutely bored to death. Â They have the lights cranked way too high and most of the time, forget to put on the music. Â They need to offer some weekend drink specials and utilize their patio. Â Maybe they don't WANT to be known as a bar. Â Then I understand why they are doing it so poorly. Â All I know is there are bloody tons of 20-30 something young professional locals who have absolutely nowhere to go for a drink on the weekends.
Since its opening Suda has been on the forefront of straight goodness! From their innovative and incredible cocktails to their super 'ono (delicious) Cali Cuisine menu they have the full package! Beautiful ambiance rounds out the whole experience along with great service! A true gem on the east side of sunny Santa Cruz! Â I have been here several times with only great experiences! Â Keep up the great work Suda! Check them out! 5 SHAKAS!!!
Review Source:I came with a group of 4, for an early dinner. Â We had no wait and great service. Â We started with veggie Lettuce wraps. Â They have the option to make them Chicken lettuce wraps as well. Â The dipping sauce made the entire dish. Â Then I had the sweet potato tacos accompanied by the "Shipwreked" (muddled strawberries and rum) The entire meal was perfect!
I came back the next day with a girlfriend and coincidently it was the "Sunday Funday" menu. So, we were stoked to have $3 mimosas!
I've been here a few times now and have had the tuna towers, lettuce wraps, GF Suda burger (beef and turkey), fish tacos and the victory bowl. So far, so good. And, I love that it's close in my 'hood. The drinks are innovative and yummy. I love the fact that many have muddled fresh ingredients. Last night, I had one with muddled jalapeño, ginger and mint (rum, I think, pineapple juice and whatever else) that was super tasty. The wine selection is also decent. Last but not least, they have done a great job with the decor. Unfortunately, the place can get loud on busy nights. And, they don't stay open too late, which leaves you after a few drinks, stumbling distance to Casty's. Considering that one the owners owns both places, he sure planned that well! ;)
Review Source:SUDA has awesome food !! Â We have been there about 10 or so times and the food is the same each time. Â We love to sit outside next to their fire heaters as it feels like you are at home in your own back yard :)
The only reason it did not get 5 stars for me is due to the noise level. Â Inside it is incredibly loud...so we only go when it is nice enough to sit outside...
If you have never eaten there, give it a chance...you will love the food and the staff  !
We went here for drinks and appetizers on NYE. Great specialty cocktails and the bar tenders were great about making other special request drinks.
I wasn't very impressed with the appetizers, but I need to come back for a full meal - I might increase my review to a 4. But for now 3 - mediocre appetizers, but good drinks and pretty design/decor.
I finally broke down and started writing reviews on Yelp because of how fantastic an experience my family and I had at Suda. This place is delicious and honestly, under priced. I worry that they might not survive at what a steal this place is. I discovered them through an article in "Edible Monterey Bay". They try to use local food sources and actually have their own farm in Corralitos. Farming their own food might be why they can price their food so fairly. Speaking of deals I noticed that they have some great happy hour deals. I'll have to go back soon.... Â The term "mixologist" is worthy here. The cocktails were liquid art.
Review Source:Wow, what a fantastic addition to Santa Cruz! Love the decor, the drinks, and the food. When you consider that much of the food is locally sourced (at their own farm no less) and organic, the prices are very fair, debatably underpriced even. Our three person dinner with apps, multiple drink rounds, and two desserts came to $110 before tip.
Review Source:My first visit I came during dinner and it was pretty crowded but we received good service. I ordered the burger which is hard to mess up but it was good. The drinks menu is amazing and I would go just for the drinks.
My second visit was for lunch. I ordered macaroni and a salad. The macaroni was horrible. I couldn't eat it but I didn't want to complain. We took it to go. The salad was yummy and a good size. The service was great. It was empty that day and I had my 17month old daughter who was being a little wild. The waiter or maybe it was a buser had brought her crayons and a coloring book which I never thought would entertain her but it did. He was also very sweet as she poured the salt shaker all over the table! I appreciated his patience and the waitress was very sweet also.
I enjoy the environment and I will return to try more food from their menu.
I came here for a drink the Süda 75 was by far the best drink i ever had in santa cruz county. Fresh Basil cucumber champagne and citrus.  Must try
I also tried the Shipwrecked waaay over priced for quality and quantity, tasted like a watered down over iced strawberry Daq. Was disappointed with that, but for the same fee u can get the FRESH Basil Süda75! Ill have to go back, to give a more extensive review
My son & I went to Suda last night to watch the elections and for the great prices on their happy hour menu. Â They were pretty packed and we were stoked to get seats at their high bar in the middle of the restaurant with a view of their 2 flat screens. Â The atmosphere was fun with the excitement of the elections. Â I was so pleased with the service and with the quality of the food. Â Sometimes if the chef is busy quality goes down at some places but not here! Â Our server was friendly and helpful. Â We ordered their beer battered fish tacos and they were the best I've ever had. Â Also the sweet potato fries which come with a garlicky aioli dipping sauce. Â We will definitely be back!
Review Source:Went to Suda for Santa Cruz Restaurant Week. Â
The main course food tasted great, though it was quite rich and the dessert was somewhat disappointing (not as rich as I would have liked). Â
We sat outside as it was noisy inside and all they had available were seats at the bar. Â The heat lamps made the outside comfortable, even in October. Â
All three of us who ate dinner that night felt a little gastrointestinal distress. Â No one got sick outright, but we all felt something - perhaps just the richness of the fettucini?
Well, let me preface this by saying we really wanted to like this place. We had heard mixed reviews, but had high hopes for this place based on what we had heard and seen as we drove by. The atmosphere and service were both great, but the food was definitely not executed right.
For Santa Cruz Restaurant Week this place was having a Prix Fixe menu for $25. I ordered the "Chaos Theory" drink which the server recommended. The flavors of the drink were beautiful, blackberries and lychee. But it was way too sweet for me, and I had to send it back. I'm not the kind of person who would send something back unless I really couldn't drink it, btw. For appetizers, we ordered the lettuce wraps and the tuna tower, which was an asian cracker with tuna tar tar served with soy and wasabi. I actually enjoyed the tuna tower because the fish tasted fresh, but the lettuce wrap was unremarkable. The plating was beautiful.
For the entrees I ordered the grilled salmon with lemon brown rice and vegetables. All around it was bland and unseasoned. I make a better salmon at home. And our server said outside of the Prix Fixe it was $27. I would have been very disappointed to have paid that for what I got.
My boyfriend ordered the steak, whipped potatoes, and spinach. He could barely cut it with this steak knife. And he commented "Wow, I've never had a steak that tasted fishy before!" The spinach was.. interesting. Bitter. And paritially cooked, partially raw, partially overcooked. I can't imagine the chef tasted what he was putting out. The potatoes and the sauce were great. Highlight of the meal...
Now you would think that they would have redeemed themselves with the chocolate lava cake. Have you ever heard of a cold lava cake? Isn't lava supposed to be hot? The cake itself was mealy. The frozen one at Trader Joe's for $3 is better, assuming you heat it right.
Now, with all that said, the server was very understanding and professional. She took the drink that I ordered off the tab and she even bought me my glass of wine. The atmosphere of the place was awesome, too. Super unique and a little industrial; the kind of place we could see ourselves frequenting if there was good food. But it's just not worth it if the food wasn't executed well. This place has all the ingredients to be an awesome local spot.. they just didn't quite pull it off for us.
The service at Suda is just horrendous.
We went yesterday after hearing good things from friends and I was so utterly disappointed.
They sat us with both lunch and dinner menus and then (after a 20 minute wait to even have someone take our drink order), wouldn't take our dinner order for 45 minutes - why offer us the dinner menu if you're not serving those items?
When they finally took our dinner order, they came back 20 minutes later to let us know one of the items we ordered wasn't available.
Now, if the restaurant was super busy, I would completely understand the horrible service, but, there were literally 2 tables and from what we counted, 7 people on staff working the front of the restaurant (but really just flirting with each other).
When the food finally came, it was average at best, fortunately it wasn't over priced so, we didn't feel totally undone.
The only redeeming quality: fabulous cocktails.
I will not go there again. If you want a consistently good experience and a nice dinner on this side of town: head over to Cafe Cruz.
A group of 7 friends decided to take a chance on Suda. Â After reviewing some of the things the other Yelpers said, I decided to make a reservation. Â They got us right in at 7:30 and took drink orders pretty much as soon as we sat down. Â I LOVE the decor! Â Yes, it is a bit noisy and it was hard to hear everyone at our table but they do have a back room for private parties. Â
My friends who had cocktails seemed to be happy but I kept it simple and went with their gluten free beer (thank you!). Â Food was solid. Â Two people ordered fish tacos, one sweet potato and two servings of the cajun pasta with chicken. Â The taco people said everything was good but needed hot sauce (which the server brought over). Â The pasta people raved about their dishes. I got the victory bowl (super yummy) and the hubby got the curry. Â Everyone was very happy and aggreed to come back.
I was excited to try this place after hearing it had such good reviews. The ambiance was nice and the menu looked promising.
It took 20 + minutes for them to take our order. I ordered a salmon special on quinoa. It took a fairly long time to get our food and when it came out my order was on rice and the fish was raw in the middle. I mentioned it to the waiter who was very friendly and brought it back to the chef. 15 minutes later he brought me a half order of salmon on quinoa. The salmon wasn't seasoned and the vegetables were pretty basic.
My friend ordered the salmon linguini which was supposed to come with garlic bread but didn't show up with his order. He asked for when the meal came out. He did eventually get his garlic bread after we were done eating. It was a little burnt and didn't have any color on it. He also complained that his food was bland and his pasta was mushy.
On the plus side the ingredients were fresh and seemed to be top quality. It's just a shame to waste those great ingredients on less than average cooking.
The waiter was apologetic and said they would be working out the issues of the restaurant after the summer season. He also discounted our meal.
Hum... Where to start. Starving for lunch we decided to give the new restaurant in town a try. We showed up around 1:00pm. We ordered and it took about 15 minutes to get our drinks. Finally once they came, we ordered lunch - 4 basic meals. Waiting, waiting, 1.5 hours later our food came. We almost left (which we would have been the third table in a row). Such a bummer! The food was okay once it came, but at that point was past the point of starvation.
Our poor waitress was so upset (crying at our table). Had the worst day ever. Figure it out Suda! You are a new restaurant! Staff appropriately! Good service surpasses everything else. At least they comped our drinks- made the experience a little better. Â Didn't get out of there till 3:30 for a quick bite to eat.
Sorry! Really wanted to like this place!
Heard the talk on the town for this place and couldn't wait to stop by. A friend who used to live in town suggested we swing by when were happened to be on that side of town. We walked in around 7:30 PM to a full house and a super hip atmosphere. This place looks SO unlike anything on the eastside; it's a breath of fresh air. Said my friend: "Wow, this looks like it belongs in Sacramento..." Granted, they have only been open about 5 weeks, so things weren't 100% perfect but I can definitely tell it is going to develop further.
Awesome decor aside, we put our name in for a table and hoovered by the bar. We weren't given an estimation on time for our table, but we happened to snag two stools at the bar pretty quickly. This is good because our table took at least 15 minutes, at which point we had already decided to stick to the bar where we could order food as well.
The specialty cocktail list is basically a list of FANCY YUM. We ordered two different ones each over the night, and were able to sample one more. They were all solid and dangerously delicious. Our bartender/server was friendly, talented and attentive.
We each had the soup of the day - clam chowder - which was deliciously hearty but a little thin for my taste. My friend also had the Suda salad which looked fantastic (she confirmed) with the jalapeno habanero dressing.
I look forward to returning to Suda the next time I'm on that side of town, definitely worth it!
They just opened, so take this with a grain of salt.  The place has potential to be RAD.  The interior décor is fantastic and drinks are good.  Parking is easy.  The patio is great, but driving by the exterior hardly does the place justice.  I've been twice.  The first time for lunch and drinks on the patio.  Service was fantastic but the food was fresh but bland (thank goodness for hot sauce).  We had the chicken lettuce wraps, fish tacos and beef tacos.  I went back later that night for drinks (this was a Saturday) and the bartender was too busy talking to her friend at the end of the bar to be bothered to check to see if we needed another drink (which we did). Â
With a livelier menu and more attentive bar staff I think this place will be great (so long as the place doesn't start to attract too much douchebaggery - last thing we need is an Eastside Motiv. Â Barftown times a thousand).
Update: I went again one evening recently. Â We sat outside and the service was appalling. Â Nobody came to take our drink order for about 15-20 min. Â Even then a busser asked if we had been taken care of and had to hunt down our server. The table behind us apparently left without paying their tab. Â It took our server forever to bring us ours, we almost contemplated following suit. Â Get it together gang, your service is pretty dismal. BUT one of my favorite bartenders works there, so you've got that going for you.
I really really want to like this place. The pedigree of the owners is great. The decor is really nice. A great spot with good parking in a part of town that can use more love. Â Great bar, fun drinks, good beers on tap. I want them to succeed and will try them again hoping for better.
But they have to work on their mechanics. I came with friends on a Sunday afternoon. Ready to chill. They were pretty busy but definitely had tables open. Since I was still waiting for the rest of my party I knew it would be awhile. But even after we were all there we still waited another 15 minutes. Now I understand that open tables doesn't mean you should be seated. The back up can be with servers or the kitchen. More on that later.
Finally the hostess told us we could be seated but we would need to wait at least 10 minutes before ordering anything because the kitchen was backed up. I guessed right! That was fine since we could order libations. I had the Green Mary, and although a friend had had the same drink a few weeks previous and found it lacking spices, I had no such issues. My friends ordered other lovely cocktails from the great menu. Once drinks were served our waiter took our order. Â I ordered an omelet, friends ordered burgers, scrambles, mac and cheese and tacos. So we hit the broad spectrum.
As stated before I was in a really chill mood and happy to wait for food, especially since they are just getting started. But 45 minutes later my patience was beginning to wear thin. Â Plus, we did order on seperate checks and one order came out a good 10 minutes before the other. They seems staffed ok with wait staff and bar staff so I can only figure the back up was in the kitchen. By this late time in the afternoon the place was getting really empty so I am not sure why the issue.
Some food was pretty bland. The mac and cheese for example. The waiter did bring us an amazing selection of hot sauce, including Tabasco, Cholula, Tapatio, Frank's Red Sauce, Sriracha, and Mae Ploy. (I think that was the list). The salsa on my omelet was pretty good, if the contents inside were somewhat lacking. The potatoes were outstanding.
I tried to order a beer to go with my brunch but that took forever to come too, but the waiter comped that one.
Pretty pricey for what we got. My share of the bill was over $30 for an omelet and one drink (that could be our math problem too though)
I will try them again in a few months and hope they work out the kinks. Would love to try them for happy hour, so please get your service issues corrected soon.
This was one of the better meals I've had in the Santa Cruz area. Portions we not too big, good flavors on various selections, not too much mayo on the club :)
Our service was an A+
Definitely try the red and green bloodys
Don't let the exterior of the building fool you, the inside is like a ttly different world
Really enjoyed and will go back to check out the nightlife
This is a review for the bar only -- I really should wait until I can get in for a meal, but I was pretty excited about this addition to the neighborhood. Food review to follow.
Stealing a thought from Christine C: this is exactly what Pleasure Point needed...and I LOVE IT. A comfortable place to quaff a good beer, glass of wine or cocktail (many good selections on tap, including Green Flash and Anchor porter) in a nice space with a nice neighborhood vibe.
Cocktails are thoughtfully constructed and creative, and the space has been transformed into a great place for singles and groups.
You have my vote, Suda...keep it up!
