    "Next to Big Lots?!"

My friends were so confused when we pulled up to Sugar in the middle of this shopping plaza. I mean.. it's between IZOD and Big Lots.. we probably would never have noticed it if it weren't for the five buff dudes in skin-tight black shirts manning the velvet rope outside. When we first walked up, they initially told us since we weren't on the guest list, it would be $10 each. Luckily, we said we're from out of town (and that's the damn truth), so they let my two lady friends and myself in without any hassle.

We arrived at around 11:30 and this place was empty besides the one dude on the dance floor breakdancing to an 80's jam. Interesting. So we decided to start off with three shots of Patron! That was the only thing to do at that point, right? It came out to $36. We followed those up pretty quickly with three Long Islands which also amounted to $36. Soon after that the DJ started playing more hip-hop and top 40, so more people hit the dance floor.

After midnight, it definitely started to pick up! Then I'm not sure what prompted the change in music, but it was all Latin American music for a good half hour again. Then it was back to top 40! Sugar definitely draws an interesting crowd. I'm not even going to explain because it's best to see for yourself!

For what it is and its location, Sugar is alright. When you step inside, you feel like you're in a nice lounge/nightclub, so it gets points for that. It's a decent option if you don't want to go all the way to the city!

A lot of fun, great food and awesome crowd! It was nice to get dressed up somewhere and not have to go into Manhattan for dancing. We all had a blast!

My boyfriend and I came here with the Groupon ($40 for a $100 worth of food and drinks) on a Friday night. The kitchen is closed during the summer, so they honored the full Groupon at the bar, which was great.

The bartenders are fun and make great drinks, although they were not that strong for $12 each - make it around $14-15 with a 20% auto gratuity. Music was the typical Top 40 and definitely was an older crowd. Even so, I had a great time dancing and drinking away.

The only issue I had was the bartender was pouring herself drinks and then would charge it to my tab. My boyfriend and I would order two shots, she would pour three and then take it with us. I was assuming hers would be on the house! I mean I was drunk, but not that drunk to not realize that 4 shots should not be $72!

As I was leaving, I approached a manager and asked if it was their policy that bartenders charge their drinks to their customers when the customer did not offer to buy them one. He was very accommodating, apologized, and took the drinks off my bill.

Despite the great dancing, music, venue, I don't think I'll be back.

Absolutely horrible. Couldn't wait to leave this place.  Worst waitress service, overpriced drinks, and the crowd was just odd. The only positive thing I can say is the quesadillas weren't bad.

Food was okay. Nothing to rave about. Also very small portions. I get that it's tapas, but you know, you do need food on the plate to share/pass it around.

The dj was good, the ambience was fun. Drinks were delicious (especially the cotton candy martini), but the staff weren't so nice.

We were there for a friend's bachelorette party and we had a table for dinner and they lead us to believe we'd get to sit chill there the whole night, but apparently someone else decided they wanted to pay money for it so we had to get up. Meanwhile there were other seating areas that were void of people. So freaking rude.

It's an older crowd by the way. So if you're a 20 something you'll definitely feel a bit too young to be there.

Sugar could have had so much potential. It's really trying hard to be the Stanton Social of Long Island. The ideas are there, but the execution is not.

We came on a Friday night at 8pm. We were shocked at how empty it was. Any restaurant having that many open tables at prime weekend dinner time is not good.

We came here with a Groupon $40 for $100 worth of food and drinks.

They have a very creative drink menu. The problem is they use all the fun ingredients to mask the lack of alcohol in their drinks. The drinks are NYC priced also. I had the Sugar Sweet Cotton Candy. The actual cocktail mix is pouring into a glass filled with cotton candy right in front of you. Understandably so, because the minute the liquid hits the cotton candy, the drink turns an ugly brown color. Had I been served that initially, I would have sent it back.

Dinner at Sugar is tapas style...small dishes meant to be shared. All the menu items really SOUND outstanding, but they were all missing that special touch.

    We ordered:

Asian Salad (There was nothing Asian about this salad, it was a regular house salad topped with some tortilla strips and Italian dressing, definitely not ginger dressing as indicated on the menu)
Spicy Tuna Tartare (which were served with SUPER greasy tortilla chips)
Truffle Mac and Cheese (you could taste the truffle but the cheese was definitely cheap polly-o)
Mini Cheeseburger Bar (cool idea to "build" your burger...but the sides were tomatoes, cheese sauce, pickles, and ketchup...sooo why am I spending time MAKING a burger that would otherwise have these basic ingredients on them?)
We had ordered sweet potato fries, but they forgot about them. We were happy about that because were super full at that point.
And now that I'm writing this review, I remember we ordered calamari and never got that either. So they forgot 2 dishes. No bueno.

Even with the coupon, we had to pay an additional $40. Pretty pricey for a mediocre meal.

I went there for the dining experience last night. The portions were bigger than expected. 8 quesadillas, pasta special was too much for two people. TheThai shrimp  I ended up taking home. Sweet potato fries, again a decent size for two people. Food in general was nothing special. I didn't go with the tar tar or anything exotic. I had sparkling wine so I can't judge the drinks. Service charge was included for the 2 person dining experience which I didn't mind but had I not read the receipt properly I might of over tipped. Bill was 89$ (for 2 people) tip was something to the tune of 23$.

About 2 years ago I came here after our company Christmas party, felt so out of place (26 at the time) I felt Iike such an old bitch with the younger girls lol surrounded by SUGAR daddies. This is a bucket list for me, not my kind of party. Overall 2.5 stars, nice to look at. Music meh food meh.

Drinks are excellent, the appetizers were a decent version of a NYC lounge menu, that I have created a fair share of. The crowd is exactly what you would expect at a long island-strip mall venue. Old plumbers hitting on girls half their age with stories of their boats, docked in Mastic...the staff is eye candy while the crowd is an appetite suppressant. All in all it's a nice idea in a bad location! The menu has good ideas but executed with sophomoric precision. If you happen to be in the general vicinity..... For what reason I could not fathom, then it is worth dropping in for a few of the specialty cocktails and a small plate or two!

The decor is pretty cool... but that's about where the positive's stop. The drinks WOULD be good if it weren't for the fact they were $14-$15 PER. This isn't Manhattan guys. Wait, I've had stronger drinks in NYC for half the cost. Not sure why they feel they can jack up the drink costs that way.

Music, OK. Food--- not good at all. Went with a bunch of friends and had a various spread of dishes. Mongolian Beef tasted like it was something out of a package and microwaved.

Clientele? HORRIBLE. Each time I've gone it's been done up women with creepy old men. As in, middle aged and balding.

There are far better places than this spot.

This place gives you the feeling that you are a chic upscale Manhattan socialite and you don't even have to pay for the LIRR! Last time I checked, dining out in style was always a little expensive, and while this place is no exception, their delectable and beautiful gourmet truffle mac and cheese will put you into food euphoria, not thinking about the bill!

Its a small plates menu, which is great for those who like adopt the Bethany Frankel advice "taste everything, eat nothing".  I abide by this rule except when it comes to the truffle mac and cheese; I eat as much as I want.   We usually get a salad, the sliders, tacos, mac and cheese and dessert, and everything is always awesome!

Not a great place to bring the family, but my husband and I did dine there recently with another couple and a baby.  The place was pretty quiet at our 6:30 pm dinner time, and was picking up as we excited.  The baby was loving Sugar too, and was bopping to the music the entire dinner, lol!

The bottom line: Save up a few bucks and don't skip this place!

I really am not one to review, seeing this is my first review ever, but It's warranted.

I found this place on Groupon this afternoon "$25 for $50 worth of food", Okay, I've done that in the past, let's give this place a shot. My boyfriend just got a new job and I thought why not surprise him, take him somewhere new, well i wish I just stuck with something familiar.

I called because "reservations are strongly recommended", I made a 7:30 reservation, we got there around 7ish due to no traffic, surprisingly.

The place is huge, I can see how it's a nightclub because the atmosphere speaks for that, it is way to big for a restaurant and when you are one of two tables in house it feels even larger. The music is awkward, it goes from 80's pop to today's rock to dance to 60's soul.

The waitress was awkward and clearly didn't want to be there. We ordered 4 tapas for the two of us. On the bottom it says $25 minimum per person for table service, which clearly means you have to order at least 2 tapas to get over that price or one expensive tapa (which i think there was only 2 over the cost of $25).

First thing was our plates were dirty, we asked for new ones, after each wave, i asked for a new plate, call me picky but i don't like eating off a dirty plate especially since each tapa tasted different from the last.

My boyfriend and I both agree the food was just eh, at best, nothing special. It's overpriced for what you get, the crab cakes tasted canned and that they probably were frozen then recooked, the food was just lukewarm, the filling in the dumplings were mushy, it was just very blah. The only thing I would recommend is the slaw from the Carolina Sliders, it has a nice touch of heat to it and the crunch is nice.

We didn't bother for dessert and when we asked for the check it took more time than it did to get most of the food, but then when i received the bill i noticed they added a 20% gratuity on top of the original cost not the groupon discounted rate. I agree with adding the gratuity to the original amount NOT THE 20%, i have never been to a restaurant that added 20% let alone to 2 people. So whatever, I didn't say anything and I handed her more cash than the bill was worth because I didn't have small bills, so she asked me "Do you want Change?"  as if the 20% wasn't enough. Then I guess because since no one was in the restaurant they didn't have change so I got jipped a Quarter, I thought that was funny.

Anyways, I'd just stay away the food tastes odd, the service is terrible, and it's empty. You won't be missing much.

so many not great reviews I don't understand why. I thought the food here was pretty good I was surprised because i"m an insanely picky eater. I went here for girls night out and it seemed tons of other girls had the same idea :) only bad thing is yes I love loud music and love clubs. I even stayed for the club it turns into. but can't they wait until 10 to start the loud ass music? I mean just turn it down a bit. only because while we were eating and hanging out trying to have drinks it was annoying having to scream across the table. eventually we got up instead of having probably another bottle because to go to the bar where at least we'd be closer together to be able to talk instead of across a big table. other then that we had the best night and the bartenders were great. the music was great too until it became solely hip hop for an hour then we left. I mean a few songs are great but too much it just got boring for us at least. guess it's just our taste of music? I heard they start playing really good stuff as it gets later but it was a Thursday night! people have jobs so we couldn't stay until 2.

one other bad thing is no idea why but they close the parking lot with cones? we were driving back and forth in the parking lot until my friend jumped out and moved the cone so we could leave. just weird and annoying. do they do that for valet? whatever the reason what about the people who get there early and don't valet and want to leave? if it was raining it would have definitely been really annoying but it was a gorgeous night out so it's fine. nothing could ever beat body english's horrible valet service, few cones is fine! anyway if your a girl and get on a list you can also get open bar for like 2 hours :) maybe it was just an hour either way yummy. I do want to go back and try one of those candy looking martinis. one day. this is not the place to take your family to by the way. this is where you go with friends to stay and party!!

HAHAHAHAHAHAH omg! ... Sugar Dining Den is like a Cougar Den!!   I went with a group of 9 people for dinner at about 8:45.  The portions are small since its a tappas restaurant and the food came in a little at a time, so we were there for a while.  About 10:00pm, waiters started going around the dinning area and clearing out the tables and chairs and i noticed crowds of people from the bar were now dancing in the empty dining area.  90% of these people were in their 40's or older in mini skits, heels, tube tops.. omg my eyes!!  The food was about a 7 on a 1-10 scale, but WAY too expensive.. and the sangria was filled with ice and watered down.  I wont be going back there until i am at least 40.. that way i will fit in.. what a joke.

Meh, hit or miss place. More misses though.

I go here from time to time as an excuse to get out of the house. Can be hugely entertaining as I enjoy it for people watching (add an extra star if you are a people watcher).

Other than that, just another pretentious LI Club that lives up to the reputation. They charge a cover at the door after 10pm I believe - which is a no no. Not that people are cheap nowadays but what exactly is the 'cover' for? They also have valet parking in a shopping center with plenty of parking. Yet another attempt to squeeze a few bucks out of people.

The drinks are especially pricey - whether it is either Long island or Manhattan - and the bartenders regularly practice fuzzy math when running a tab. On several occasions I have observed bartenders with sticky fingers to which it is apparent that the more creative ones have set up independent operations possibly unknown to the management/ownership.

Either way, watch your tab and watch your wallet. Like an auxiliary cop with a megaphone at a car accident scene- nothing to see here, move along. Move along...

What an unexpected good time. Had to go out for a birthday dinner with friends they picked Sugar. Well I was very surprised. What a fun place full of energy. The wait staff was attentive and personable. The food was fresh, well seasoned  and presented in this sharing concept that kept everyone interacting. I recommend it for a fun night out. a Home Run.
As far as price very reasonable. I have spent more at the pizzeria with far less food.

This is only for their sat night.

Idk what ppl are complaining about- to me the drinks were good- but yes very over priced-  6 bucks for a bottle of water.  GRRR.

music was good- old school, dance, not a lot of pop (thank god) and no 80s rock (thank the lord), they played a lot of reggaeton at some point that i noticed when my sense of hearing was intact.

the ppl i think were generally dressed up, lots of mini skirts and basically more skanky club wear.  but u could wearing leggings and a top

staff was actually friendly- they really voluntarily helped me find a my bag that some chick next to me took! haha.

LOTS of ppl, and i didnt get any snagg looks, everyone was bumping into each other on the dance floor and no one got nasty- i think everyone was literally wasted as was i.

I have mixed feelings about this place. The food is not the greatest and it is not the best. The drinks are really good no complaints about that. The atmosphere was not my kind of thing, it seem like the majority of the people their were trying to get numbers than have fun and dance. The night I went there it was an older crowed, men having a mid-life crises and women who were back on the dating scene. I would go back and give the place another try.

    What a SWEET Night!
In the heart of one of the regions top shopping destinations sits one of the regions trendiest hotspots simply know as SUGAR. Restauranteur Brian Rosenberg has successfully married the nightclub vibe reminicent from his days at Posh, with a small plate epicurean experience that Long Islanders have had to go to Europe to experience....until now.
Among my favorites were the Tuna Tartar and California Crab Cones, Thai Sea Bass, Rainbow Rolls, The Smoked Pulled Pork Tacos and The Sliced Prime Hangar Steak. Best of all, the service was fantastic. I always seem to enjoy my meal more when the people around me (including the staff) are having a great time and enjoying themselves, as they were here. Do yourself a favor, and leave room for dessert, because the Red Velvet Cake is off the hook!

For a L.I club this place is definitely different from what we are all so used to, the meat heads and superficial girls (no offense to meatheads and superficials reading this).  Sugar bring a good, fun crowd at least this saturday night I came here.

The atmosphere is vibrant and upscale, space is decent.  The music was good, mostly new age, house and the sound wasn't that loud.  We had a great bartender that was on point with drinks.  Every time he saw he already knew what to get and at times bought me a few drinks.

Overall Sugar is a nice place.  I would like to come here and try their food and continue the night along when it turns into a club/lounge.

I like it...but don't know why.  Let's break it down.

The PLACE: Meadowbrook Pkwy to Exit 1 and its about 2 blocks from Old Country Road behind Roosevelt Field Mall.  Big parking lot, tucked away in a corner of a strip mall with a nice amount of space.

The place is really pretty.  There are a couple of bars (one on the left when you enter and one all the way in the back).  It doubles as a restaurant but I will only be talking about the club.  Enough space for dancing once they move the tables out of the way.

The TUNES: The place wants to be the "Jersey Shore" club but the music is a pretty good mix of Hip Hop, Dance, Pop and some old house.  However, the DJ isn't great in his transitions so you may find yourself going from Dancehall Reggae (like Temperature by sean Paul) to Scenario by Tribe Called Quest then over to something by Brittney Spears.  Inconsistent but like playing music from your IPod in the car.

The DRINKS: Bottle of Water $6, Diet coke $3, Mixed drink (rum & coke all the way to Long Island Iced Tea) $11.  Not strong enough to order light drinks all night so go high octane if you are going to drink. Less is more.

The PEOPLE: You know me. Party just has to be bumpin' for me to be into the moment.  The three times I have gone now had a bunch of middle aged dudes that didn't seem to know what hangin out at a club was like.  Jeans, unironed shirts, white socks and shoes....hang it up fellas.  Only a hand full of guys were there to party.  Now the LADIES....skirts, heels, makeup....they know how to show up to a club.  Never had a problem approaching any girls in here.  There are a number of middle aged people hangin out here but only the ladies seem to be havin a good time.

OVERALL:  I didn't pay a cover on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Easy to get to and get out.  Pricey drinks, decent music, kinda party crowd...I'm going back. Nothing jumps out and says this is the best place ever.  But it is a good time overall. Can't go 5 stars since I'm neglecting the food aspect.

ADDITION::: Went on a Saturday night after 1AM and it was wall to wall Jersey Shore music and crowd.Fist bumpin all night.  Vodka straight on the rocks was $14...yep, you heard me right.  Drink before u get here.  If you're into the music and love the Jersey shore, this is your place.  Not mine....Saturday, go early...then bail to the next spot before 12.  Could drop a star...but I'll leave it.

This place sucks. It has potential to be great, but it's really just a pretty venue filled with a bunch of old creepy men who prey on young women. The drinks are completely overpriced as well. Not to mention to owner, Brian Rosenburg, is the most unprofessional business man I've ever had the displeasure of knowing. He made fun of  my close friend who recently went thru chemo when we went to his crappy club recently by calling her an 'old woman'. I won't go here again. Save yourself from the creepy men and expensive drinks and go to Aura instead.

Let me start off by saying I do not really do the Long Island lounge/club scene. Too many "gorilla, juiceheads..and princesses" I mean Snooki would love it.. but its not for moi. I was beyond surprised how much fun I ended up having. Contrary to my misconceptions and hesitations of this place..I had a blast. Got here around 9:30, small line, was on a guestlist, free to get in! Guys I think it was $20.

People were still seated for dinner, by 10 it started clearing for more a dance club. It wasn't overbearing crowded and I had enough dance room.

As said by other reviewers a great city alternative. I had a wonderful experience with the bartenders. Wish I caught her name. I told her what I like to drink and she gave me some alternatives.. and new suggestions: Watermelon vodka and club with a splash of cranberry. SO GOOD. I had then by her guidance..whipped cream vodka and...no idea sprite? DELICIOUS my friends were jealous of my drinks the whole night. So one point I forgot if I ordered 2 or 3 drinks on my own.. so I was expecting a bill of either $22 or $33...I was charged for only 1 drink!! Practically unheard of on Long Island & the fact the bartender was a girl!!

Dj made me dance all night. Loved the feel like I was in a tunnel with flashing lights, I'd go here with friends because I love asian fusion.

I recently went out to this place in Long Island. I walked in and was impressed with the place. The decor is great, beautiful wooden arches, great lighting, great sight lines, and clean looking. The waitstaff was beautiful and attentive. The security was even great, being very approachable and almost invisible. The organization was tops, with the bottle service and dinner tables tracked with a system of ease. The music was amazing and sound system complimented the DJ's selection as well. So tell me how does a place that has soo many things right and functions completely right only get 2 stars.... I'll tell you. This place has the most unattractive crowd of people going there that I have ever seen. Wow its like two reality shows.... Jersey Shore meets the Biggest Loser!! In my wildest outing I have never seen a custom tailored pin-stripped leather blazer. Or the parade of tacky leopard dresses that these women obviously borrowed from their daughters and younger siblings, nothing fit them right!!! Its like cougar town in Michael Jackson's thriller... the horror. Again nothing against the place, even the promoters or the marketing team behind it, they did everything right, a wonderful job to be proud of. But where do these people come from, it was like I was in area51. Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers would be in a battle for customers there as well as So You think You can dance should be filmed there. It was one hot mess after another. I was thinking about giving it another chance, but I think I am going on a diet and take Sugar out of my routine.

What a horrible night! The six of us showed up @ 8pm for drinks, dinner and dancing, spent $150 at the bar waiting for dinner, we got seated at 9pm and spent an additional $450 for a tapas type of dinner which left most of us hungry. During the dinner closer to 10.30pm we saw a lot of commotion and table moving and 2 of the managers came over to check on us and see if we are staying (we had a booth seating), to which we all responded 'YES'. They practically pulled the tables from under us while having desert around 11pm and around 11.30pm, after we said we want to stay and ordered a bottle of Grey Goose for additional $250, they threw us out saying 'sorry the place is reserved!' .... A total City Wannabe with horrible over packed floor and even worse management.... Don't bother! Go to the city instead!

A trendy lounge, bar and restaurant reminiscent of the city. Decided to check it out with my sister and some friends when I decided to visit the parentals due to the fact they sent us VIP bracelets for free open bar till 10. The crowd is mixed- with older people mixed in with the twenty and thirty-somethings you would expect this place to draw.

We opted to get some appies as well. The crab cakes and tuna tartare cones were surprisingly fresh and delicious. The chicken skewers, quesadillas and sweet potato fries were solid as well. The drinks were free till 10 so can't complain on that front. After open bar was over we opted to try some of their specialty cocktails. The swedish fish was yummy and not as sweet as expected, however the cotton candy martini was a miss.

All in all a cute little spot on LI to check out when you want to go out but don't want to go crazy out.

My boyfriend and I went here last night for dinner. Let me start by saying that we are casual diners and don't usually end up at places like Sugar. We're not club people, and although we go to nice restaurants, we're more burger/diner people. But I found Sugar on Yelp, it's right nearby, and the menu sounded amazing.

We immediately laughed as we pulled up because there was a velvet rope with no one on line. My boyfriend was wearing sandals and the guy at the front informed us that they don't usually allow sandals but that it wouldn't be a problem. He was nice about it, told us to enjoy our dinner, and asked how it was on the way out.

We didn't have a reservation, but there were plenty of tables available for 8:30 on a Friday night. We were seated right away. Our waitress came over right away. I ordered the jolly rancher martini and my boyfriend got the mojito. My drink was fine, but his mojito was amazing. I never liked them, and now I know why: I never had one that was made properly! Only downside is that the drinks are pretty expensive, $22 for both of our drinks.

Now for the food: My boyfriend got a Kobe beef slider and I got a bacon and cheese slider. Now, I was under the impression that a slider was a burger....hello??? right??? Apparently not, as I got bacon and cheese on bread. The waitress quickly offered to bring out a Kobe slider with cheese and apologized, even though she really hadn't done anything wrong. I received a Kobe beef slider with bacon and cheese about 10 minutes later. We also ordered the pork tacos and the chicken quesadillas. Oh my goodness the food was good. I didn't love the tacos, but the quesadillas and especially the burger was amazing. I devoured everything and was tempted to order more but we decided to wait until next time.

We didn't stay for the club scene, although the crowd looked like it would have been a fun time. I'm not big on clubs but I would DEFINITELY go back to Sugar for another dinner. The food is fantastic, and next time I'll be trying the mac and cheese. You won't get a cheap meal here as this is an expensive place, but the food is worth the price.

It was lovely. It was a restaurant that turned straight into a club.
The food was pretty good, especially the ribs and the mac n cheese. =D
Everything we ordered from was to share with others at the table.
When it came to the partying time, the dance portion of the saturday night, the music was very mainstream which i thought was a good way to please most of the crowd. =]

It is pricey here. Don't expect a cheap dinner.

A friend an i went here for dinner and drinks on a friday night. The food was pretty good. I love that its a small plate kitchen, this way you share dishes and you can taste a lil bit of everything. We ordered the tuna tartar cones and coconut shrimp as our appetizers. The tuna was so fresh and the presentation was really cool! The coconut shrimp was good but we didnt care for one of the dipping sauces served along with it. They serve the shrimp wrapped in some sort of dough. Very different....Not too much coconut flavor but i still liked it. We also ordered the mac n cheese and all i can say is WOW. Its served in a mini cast iron pot. It was delicious! I would go back just for that! As our side dish we got the fried rice. To be honest, it wasn't that special. Kind of bland. I just felt like it was missing something. Do yourself a favor and get the cupcake sliders. They have 4 different mini cupcakes on a plate. Peanut butter choc, Oreo, vanilla and RED VELVET!  That was my fav!!!! If you want more than just a bite of each cupcake order the dessert for yourself. They're tiny and delicious. The drinks were great too. I recommend the pineapple almond joy. Its really sweet but reaaalllly good.
