Bad, bad, bad.  We were 7 women, and we were all disappointed with the food ant the service. The service was very slow and the server didn't know the menu. My friend ordered a pasta with chicken; the sauce was watery. They took it back to the kitchen, The server forgot about it.  Finally, two hours later, my friend got her pasta.  Another friend ordered an arugula salad with goat cheese.  She brought a salad mix, maybe one cup, with a few pieces of beets.  When she asked t he server, she said they didn't have arugula nor goat cheese.  She assured my friend the menu didn't mentioned arugula salad with goat cheese, but it did.  To make the story short, the place was completely empty on a Friday night.  Bad experience.  We are never going back.

Putting out a Groupon and then closing for renovations 2 days later seems to be poor planning on someone's part. Too bad, we had been looking forward to trying this place.

The food we ordered (clam chowder,Chardonnay Plank Roasted Salmon ) was pretty decent. The portions were rather small. My salmon was seasoned well while clam chowder was a bit too spicy for me. The prices are average. Not sure if we'd come back there.

Not that good, best thing about it was the chips and salsa. Fish tacos tasted like i was licking the bottom of the ocean. Beans and rice were old.
    Will not come back

Nice place, I came here with my wife a month ago on a busy  night, the bartender Espe was really nice and friendly, the salmon and the NY steak were delicious.
    We'll be back.

Nice little restaurant in a corner location in downtown Oxnard.  We sat a the bar and there was live entertainment on a Wednesday night.  The bartender was helpful with my wife's wine selection and I had a local beer on tap.  We don't normally have appetizers, but decided tonight would be an exception and ordered the Ahi Tostada appetizer.  $12 and worth it.  My wife ordered the Chardonnay Plank Roasted Salmon and I had the NY steak with reduced Cipollini onion sauce.  Great tasting entrees for both of us.  The only complaint would be the massive amount of onion sauce on my steak.  Had the chef been a little more conservative with the Cipollini sauce; this place would have received five stars. Oh, and by the way, the dessert of cappuccino pie was awesome as well.

The food is ok the service is not great. The prices are too high but the restaurant is really nice. Over all I would not go dine there unless it's a special occasion or I'm using a <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Frestaurant.com&s=c5fe485af4df376130bee54f875814d79c4d7913e1258123b1206d2bdbf4873b" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://restaurant.com</a> certificate. I was just not impressed with the food or the service I might give it a second try.

We had dinner here as out of town visitors on Saturday night and it was an excellent meal.
Everything from the appetizers: Blue Corn Chile Relleno and Butternut Squash Raviolli to the main course, Pan Roasted Sea Bass was done very nicely with just the right amount of freshness and flavor.

I had a Basil Orange Mojito that was delicious although might have been served in a rather large glass than I'm used to for mojitos.

The only complaint I have that didn't earn a 5 star rating from me, was that towards the end of our night I asked our server 3 times to refill my water and he never did so.

I went on a Friday evening when they had a Salsa & Bachata night. The decor was reminiscent of a posh Mexican restaurant with a well stocked bar and a comfortable dining room. My girlfriend and I arrived to meet some friends who were meeting us there and when we arrived we were welcomed by a courteous hostess. The dining room was less than half full and the bar area looked like a night club that had just opened its doors. When we sat down we were greeted by a courteous and a personable waitress who made us feel comfortable. She recommended us the house specials with enthusiasm.

I went with a party of 6 (myself, my girlfriend and 4 other friends). My girlfriend ordered a chicken dish with mash potatoes and cooked asparagus. Three of my friends ordered the filet mignon (all medium rare because they don't really know any other way) with cooked/mashed potatoes. The complimentary bread was freakin' awesome! It revealed how mediocre the bread at Olive Garden and Macaroni grill really is... I mean this bread was warm, toasty and permeated an herbal aroma... seriously, this bread made me sweat from all the chewing I did devouring as many pieces of bread they brought to our table. Moving on... even though the waitress was very positive there were negative moments during our dining experience: my girlfriend received the wrong dish, one of my friends ordered her potatoes mashed but received them cut, and we ordered drinks that took a while to receive. The filet mignon was perfectly cooked and very juicy. The chicken my girlfriend ordered was a bit dry but tasted delicious.

After dinner there was a salsa class going on in the dance floor and we took advantage of the instructor giving lessons... well my girlfriend and the guy she practiced with took advantage... I took advantage of the bar area that had large LCD screen TVs showing some NFL preseason.

I really enjoyed the ambiance of Sugarbeets, and I would return once again, but the mistakes of that evening, although not big, but were really markable moments, thus, I only gave it four stars. I can't wait to come back and have a more enjoyable experience.

My boyfriend and I came here for lunch because we had a <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2FRestaurant.com&s=0aab4cbd731f3d3b0d1453050d3abc56a8c80bd214e25469c7555b750dca8a51" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://Restaurant.com</a> coupon.

We ordered the Cesar salad (typical, but a little too much dressing for my  taste) the chicken penne, the burger, and the huevos rancheros. The penne was a little bland and tasted better after sitting in the refrigerator for a day. We didn't really eat it and we took the majority of it home. The burger was good, but I forgot to switch for sweet potato fries! Very sad. The regular fries were nothing special. The huevos rancheros was yumm.

The waitress was VERY nice. Excellent service!

If you have the coupon, it's a great deal for lunch!

Stopped by on a Fri night at 2030, and it wasn't too busy.  Half of the business was vacant.  We were seated quickly, and our server Robert was very quick and tended to our needs.  This place is $$, and the sesame ahi is off the hook!  The rice was very fluffy.  Since I'm down here for two months, I'll definitely be back.

When you walk into this door, you can see this place oozing with potential.  A vibe of coolness blankets you in this club-like atmosphere.  Its loaded with trendy furnishings, colorful light setup, a dance floor, and lively wall decor. Oh, except for the fact that  I'm here for a weekday lunch.

Sure the atmosphere is nice, but I'm here for a quick lunch and go.  We're the only occupied table outside, soaking up the Californian warm sun. Even the indoor patrons are sparse.   And with so little customers, I have to say the service is slow.  Waiters takes a while to show up, and food delivery time is horrendous.  The staff is friendly, but not well informed or even aware of our existance.

The food is a only "OK."   My ahi tuna burger no exactly what I expected.  (Ground fish and thoroughly cooked). A bit salted.  Topped with cabbage and tomatoes.  Yeah, its only ok.

My friend's dish was tasty, but not was expected.  The Veggie wrap, as explained by the wait staff, was suppose to contain Napa cabbage, tomatoes, and carrots.  What came out was types of green lettuce, romaine,  zucchini, mushrooms, and everything else not mentioned by the waiter.  This could be a staffing issue. Apparently the dude was clueless in their own ingredients.

Overall, I have to say this is a not a weekday, lunch-time restaurant.  This places screams club, while also trying to earn a few lunchtime dollars during the day.  They should focus on lunch a bit more.

One more thing, they seem to have a nice bar.  Maybe I'll return off hours.

I had seared scallops and tortilla soup. The scallops smelled of ammonia. The avocados in the tortilla soup were mushy and tasted old a hint of fermentation (I think it was the bruised part of the avocado). The base of the soup was too thick overbearing flavor like it should be a sauce not a soup. I really wanted to like this place because Oxnard is lacking in finer dining. The staff however was very hospitable and friendly and gave great service. Whoever was in charge of quality control just didn't get it that night.

(QT: Large parking lot across the main street = greater than 2 hours - unlike street parking.)

    Great atmosphere, very nice decor.

Walked in, and as I was approaching the bar the tender right away welcomed me in and asked what I'd like. I told him this was my first time checking out the place. Found it on YELP and heard it was fantastic. Proceeded to ask if he had a specialty that may not be on the menu and he fixed me a berry mojito. It was yummmmy! The rest of my group arrived, and we were seated in the main restaurant area. menues were passed around and drink orders were taken right away. The basil leaf (not mint) version of the mojito also was a yummmy plus!

First look at the menu and my thought was expensive. First bite and I knew it was completely worth it!! I had the salmon - delicious!! Moist and pink!! The simple, yet elegant veggies, as well as the mashed potatoes were all great!

Our waiter - excellent. Took very good care of us. Was quick to offer suggestions, from drinks to dishes he enjoyed. The owner was very polite and took note of how our evening was going, etc. We were told about the salsa lessons and dancing. One of the girls and I took part in both lessons and dancing with various people we just met. This is what led to a very late night "itch" to head to Hollywood and hit the club scene, LOL. So props to Sugarbeets for being the start to an awesome night-out with the girls!

A big fat *MEH*...this place misses the mark big time. It markets itself as fine dining, yet operates in a cafeteria-like setting with obnoxiously bright lights and underwhelming food. But the presentation is beautiful, you say. Yes my friend, but are you here for visual ohs and aws or tasty fare? If the latter, disappointment awaits. We got the sea bass and potato pie--both of which were cold in the middle. The beet salad tasted old and oily. I have to say, the bread was delicious...but, then again, Olive Garden's bread is delicious too.

Horrible service! We went to two christmas parties and the service was not good at all! Alot of servers walking up and down, but never would offer drinks, refills or anything... Did Casa Escobar just change the name because it's the same problem Escobar had. The food? ok... Need better management!!! Both of my parties had the same complaints, I hope it gets better because this restaurant has a lot of potential!! Good luck!!

I've heard great things about Sugarbeets and the reviews were encouraging.
I was impressed with the decor.  It's got a great vibe and comfortable feel.  I thought a Wednesday night would be slow and so did the management, evidently.  We had Lindsay and she had her hands full.
Lindsay was hostess, serverl and busser.  Although the dessert was delivered by the bartender.
The service was a bit slow, but I figured it was because she was alone.  I saw many folks in the foyer tire of waiting to be noticed.  They left.
The Eos Cabernet was great as was the bread and butter.  I ordered a medium rare steak with a blackberry reduction.  It came with macaroni and cheese with black truffle.  The steak was brown all the way through and the 'reduction' was very jammy and covered the whole steak.  It almost masked the char....  no burn.  Not sure if the burn was intentional, but it really toned down the sweetness of the berry sauce.  I actually love brulee but l think someone tried to masque a burned steak.  The reduction needs a boost from a good balsamico and black pepper.
The green beans were tired and served cold on both plates.
The mac and cheese was good, but the truffles were lost on me.  I highly suspect those were tuber indicum...  the chinese truffle that some pass as authentic black truffles.
The dessert (blood orange mousse) was still frozen in the middle and the glaze was very sweet and would have been nice if it were citrus-y instead.

I was still pleased with the experience and thought I'd try again.  My husband said no thank you.  He said his salmon was so-so.  I'll have to find myself a date if I try again.

Hus and I popped in here for lunch with no expectations, we both got pasta dishes and we were both blown away.  He had gotten a chicken pasta with a tequila-lime cream sauce, and I would have trouble not ordering that next time.  I got the pasta with beets and it was fantastic and flavorful.

Our service was great and I was impressed by that due to there being an enormous party that had the whole interior booked.  We sat at a lovely table outside and were well taken care of.  Love this place.

My boyfriend and I were taken here as for our graduation and I have to say this place is overall amazing!
First off, the service was incredible, the staff truly paid attention to every detail. The water was never empty, bread was refiled multiple times, fabulous!
We ordered two appetizers, the crab cakes and the bake brie. Both were DELICIOUS and the presentation was beautiful.
I ordered the swordfish dish with polenta. This was very good, perfectly cooked and moist, I'm not a huge fan of polenta but my boyfriend finished mine and wished there was even more left! He got the New York steak, I tasted it and was really impressed, juicy, tender, perfectly cooked.
For desert we tried the lava cake and the caramel pineapple desert, both again were excellent and presented and dish with powdered sugar and a drizzle of either chocolate or caramel.
For what you get, the prices aren't bad at all! I would much rather pay $15 for an impeccable swordfish dish and great service than go to some chain restaurant and pay the same amount for mediocre food. I highly recommend this place, both for atmosphere and food. Guys, if you want to impress a lady without breaking the bank, take her here!

We came in for a late dinner (around 8:00pm) and the restaurant still had a good crowd.  My wife and I had the Flat Iron Steaks, which were very tasty.  Our daughter enjoyed the rack of lamb.  The food was a bit pricey compared to some other places around the area, but this was also much more "upscale" and not unreasonable.

As we left to catch our movie (the theatre is adjacent) we were a bit puzzled by all the security.  However, by the time the movie let-out and the restaurant had transformed into a dance club, it made a lot more sense.  It's fantastic to see all these clubs open and attracting a vibrant nightlife.

The wife and I had a great dinner here. 1st off it is located right next to the movie theater so it great for date night.  The food was priced pretty cheap for what you get.  They had some pretty fun dishes and sides as well.  It's nice to see a place serving up scale food, have a bit of fun with some of the dishes.  Our waiter on this night was a very nice young man (god I sound like my dad, am I allowed to say "nice young man" when I am only 30?).

Let's see, I had the rib eye (awesome) the wife had the rack of lamb (she liked it, a bit too lean for me) we had two appetizers because they all sounded so good, the calamari & the watermelon salad, (both great).  I am told (by that nice young man) that they have a fun and friendly late night crowd too.  The décor is very nice, a classy and romantic feel.  The patio is huge and the bar is very big.  Again let me just stress the price point was great, not sure if they will be able to keep them so low.

    Sugar Beets...love the name alone.

The decor of the inside of the restaurant is beautiful! Its also a lot larger and spacious inside than the outside hints at. The hall leading the bathrooms is beautifully cavernous...you'll have to see with your own eyes. And the bathrooms were clean & tastefully decorated. Friday nights they have salsa dancing & there is an instructor, so if you go on a Friday night, its a bonus! Some Saturday nights they have a DJ & its like a club.

I've been wanting to check out this restaurant for a for over a month! And I'd planned on going here with some friends earlier because we were planning on something casual, but decided not too because it didn't seem like that short of place.

I wanted to take my sister here for her birthday, but coincidentally around my her birthday I saw a special on a Facebook ad by <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Flivingsocial.com&s=2456932cd5ebcc60ad30944e723e56ffdb2706564dcfac90fbf2e821a2c1c821" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://livingsocial.com</a>, so I decided to go for it. I was confused by the special because I thought I had to use the voucher I paid for in 2 days of the purchase, but was incorrect. I had called the restaurant & spoke w/ the chef/owner. He was really nice and double checked for me. Also, I asked him if I needed to print out the voucher or if i coud just take the voucher number and he said I didn't need to print it out (my printer is not working at the moment). COOL!

We didn't end up going on my sister's birthday because she went on a day trip to Santa Barbara & didn't get home til 7:30pm, she was still full from her trip & we were planning on going to Sugar Beets at 9/9:30pm and they closed 11pm on a Saturday.

We decided to have a late lunch on a Saturday (2pm on May 7, 2011). A friend of ours also decided to join us & we brought along my sister's baby.

We were seated right away and chose to be out in the patio. It seemed like a nice day for eating outside. There were plush burgundy couches for seating, and there were patio tables and umbrellas surrounded by beautiful wrought iron work.

The waitress was nice and friendly, but after we placed our order 20 minutes there, she had to go and we had another waitress. The lunch menu is very reasonably priced, everything or almost everything was under $10.

There were not a lot of people, but our  2nd waitress wasn't able to come and check on us as much because she was tending to the people inside of the restaurant.

I ordered the NY Steak on a hoagie roll w/ fries. My sister ordered the Sugar Beets Burger (think thats what its called) & a pomegranate margarita. Our friend ordered the Seared Ahi Tuna Salad and a Sugar Beets drink.

The food was good, but it could be better. The meat to bread ratio in our sandwiches could have been higher. They should have used airier bread instead of what they used. My sandwich did NOT have the traditional hoagie bread. The bread they used is good, but not appropriate for the sandwich. If you take a bite of my sandwich, the bread over powers the meat (which was under seasoned). Had the bread been thinner, airier and the meat more seasoned, it could have been a home run. But it wasn't. The food was not bad, don't get me wrong. My sister had the same complaint about her burger. She said there seemed to be more bread than burger. Whomever is doing the cooking is playing it too safe w/ the seasoning. A little more salt please! I guess its better that they error on the side of caution by under seasoning  than over seasoning, because that would really ruin my experience.

My friend said her salad was delicious & didn't have a complaint. She said her Sugar Beets cocktail was perfect...she likes her drinks on the sweet side.

The waitress wrapped up the food we didn't eat. And since my voucher was for $40 and the food was very reasonably priced, I also ordered the Roasted Chicken Penne Pasta to go, for later.

When we got our check and explained to the waitress that I had a voucher, she took down the voucher number and came back saying that I could not pay w/ the voucher number, that I needed the print out. I explained to her that  I spoke to the owner about 2 weeks ago & he said it was fine. She spoke to the owner, he came to our table and he took down the number. He came back and said that it worked out. Oh, thank God!

My friend paid the difference on the bill & it all worked out for us & we made sure we tipped appropriately based on the total... actually think we over tipped.

All in all it was a good experience & I would come again.

We had dinner here Saturday night and everything was superb. Celebrated the closing of a Silverstrand Beach home over Salmon and Gorgonzola crusted New York. The drinks were generous and the Cabernet was perfect and not too expensive. Not too crowded but crowded enough to be a fun atmosphere! The owner visited with all the revelers and a good time was had by all! I would highly recommend to this restaurant to anyone looking for good food, drink and camaraderie!

Went to Sugarbeets for the first time the other night and walked in and was impressed by the decor and look of the restaurant. I ordered one of the dinner specials which was the mahi mahi with grilled pineapple and a mango salsa and it was cooked perfectly. The presentation on the plate was very impressive as well. My mom ordered the ahi tuna with the teriyaki glaze which I liked even more than my plate. My waiter was very attentive as was the host who I believe may have also been the manager who gave us some of his recommendations which included the ahi. Also had the watermelon salad for an appetizer which although a little small it was very good, loved the bbq shrimp in the salad. I will definitely return to Sugarbeets soon.

I have been to Sugarbeets on a couple of occasions and tried a few of their plates. I wanted to go again before I reviewed this restaurant but I realize I can give an honest review at the moment.

Sugarbeets is something really new to Oxnard. It is a place that promised a fine dining ambience with truly innovative plates. In addition, it has a local flare (as a previous yelper has noted). It is a place that one can expand their culinary knowledge and try a mixture of flavors. I enjoyed that idea and welcomed this place to its' centrally located spot.

So within its first weeks of opening I paid it a visit. It took a bit for us to be seated because nobody was at the door, I'm not a service nazi but it wasn't the greatest impression. The inside is elegant, certainly not casual. The menu is still being developed, choices were limited. I ordered the Portabella Mushroom Napolitano. It took a while for it to be delivered, an inconvenience yes, but the wait was worth it. Presentation was nice, the Napolitano laid on top of cous cous. My dish was quite delicious. The Vegetables, mushrooms and mozarella cheese mixed wonderfully and cous cous added a change in flavor. I was very happy with my meal.

Second time I came service was much better. Seated promptly and I feel like we were given extra attention. Owner and chef came to check up on us often. I was feeling adventurous and wanted to try something I had never had before, something with meat. I decided on the shank of lamb. Never tasted lamb before so I figured why not. While I waited i tried a cocktail, a sugar beet. It was a variation of the Brazilian Caipirinha, instead of muddled lemons, they were muddled oranges. I liked the innovation, and the drink was good but the caipirinha still wins! I also tried my sisters' grilled watermelon salad which was weird notion to me! grilled fresh fruit? It was amazing though, it was warmly grilled but still had a fresh taste. I really liked it. I also tried my brothers stuffed swordfish and it was very good. Anyways back to my dish. Like I said never tried lamb so I don't know what to compare it to, but I decided that I don't think I like lamb too much. The meat had a good taste but I didn't like the texture, too rough and chewy. I'm not sure if it is supposed to be like this  but I certainly wasn't blown away by it. Next time if I want red meat I'll try the steak.

Sugarbeets is also a nightclub during the weekends. They have live music and DJs. Haven't gone but its good that we have something more than just Ruby's for that. Though they used to charge 10 dollar cover charge (think they have lowered it though).

In conclusion, Sugarbeets is an excellent choice to dine. It is a very unique restaurant for sure, I don't think I can find a grilled watermelon salad or a mushroom napolitano anywhere else in Oxnard. The exectuion of their plates, both in presentation and tastes is noteworthy. I have enjoyed mostly everything I've tasted. I'm hoping they can expand their menu and continue to offer different things that I can try out. They are in their infancy so I'm excited that we have this place.

I live a few blocks away from this restaurant and I have been waiting for it to open since I saw the sign. I finally went in and couldn't believe they served rack of lamb, my favorite! So I had to try it. I ordered it medium well so it should be a little pink in the middle. Bad new is once I got it I took a bite and almost spat it back out. It was nothing like any rack of lamb I've ever made. It looked like they cooked and and put it on the grill to cook it again. Dry and no flavor. But I always believe that everyone deserves a second chance, however I will just have a steak next time.

So in the late 1800s Henry Oxnard along with his family opened a Sugar Beet factory in a region north of Los Angeles. This factory brought jobs to the area along with population growth. 1903 this region had a big enough economy and population that it became an incorporated city that today we call, the City of Oxnard.

OK, so what does that have to do with this restaurant? Well, the name Sugar Beets Restaurant (Great name) brings homage to the history of Oxnard, however at the same time, their choice of dishes represent the never-ending choices of ingredients that CA offers (hyperbole). This name really works for a restaurant in Oxnard! The restaurant centrally located, right on the corner of A and 5th Street easy access. Its a very elegant restaurant.

I've had the chance to come here a couple of times: For dinner, lunch, and for the lounge/live music, all three of these occasions were different experience.

I'll start with dinner: I've order two different entrees here, the stuffed artichoke and the Mozzarella Stuffed Sword Fish. Both were really good, a lot of flavor. Stuffed Artichoke included angel hair pasta, garlic, basil and other ingredients. All these ingredients come inside the artichoke, think of the artichoke as the plate on top of the plate, the mix of ingredients worked together, everything complemented everything, there was no ingredient that overpowered the other ingredients, salt portions were also perfect. Great option if you are not in the mood to chew on some meat. Now The Mozzarella Stuffed Sword Fish, OK so this is my first time that I've tasted sword fish (and I wont eat it in the next year or so because this fish in general is high in mercury) and thank god I tasted it here because I left with a good impression. This dish comes with sword fish, mozzarella cheese, a sauce that has tomato (for sure) and mashed potatoes. OK really, really good. The texture of the fish is amazing, in was cooked right, but at the same time it was really moist, not dry at all. The cheese and the sauce, again complemented the fish. I've never had any kind of fish with any kind of cheese, but this plate makes it work really well. Another dish that I got to taste was the watermelon salad, just quick, try it, I've never had cooked watermelon (all I can say is that it has a different taste, but they still manage to keep it juicy). You can tell there's been a lot of thought in these dishes. Good job Chef L.

Lunch: I had a burger here, it was good too, meat was cooked right, sweet potato fries were also good. However the backdrop of having lunch here at Sugarbeets is the atmosphere. Like I said, it's an elegant restaurant, for me it's awkward having lunch in a fancy place, I like it to be super casual. Service during this time is also slower than dinner time.

Bar: The bar is fully stocked, everything from martinis to cachaça (I love Brazil) to beer and wine. However their dance club thing is not my scene. First, they charge money to get in, nah, call me cheap but I hate paying to get into a place, I don't like dancing in a close environment (I sweat a lot), I know they try to cater to the "young professionals" but that's not my crowd, they can get a little pretentious and cocky for me, rather hang out with the "creative class." But their drinks are good, I would probably come here for happy hour or what not.

For the food itself I can easily give it 5 stars hands down. Awesome place for special occasions, birthdays, mother's day, dates. Their dinner service is also amazing, we were told that they held the kitchen open for us (we were a little late). That's pretty generous of them! Great addition to the downtown area.

Went here for lunch today.  Food was ok, I had a Ortega Chile Chicken Sandwich.  Food was good, could have been great but lacked seasoning.  Seemed like they didnt use any seasoning on the sandwich.

Service was rather slow, no one was at the door when we arrived (around Noon) and took way to long to get our check.

Our Facebook Group, "Ventura Network" had their December Mixer here last evening and it was wonderful. They bent over backwards to make sure we were comfortable. I don't know how they do it, but it is both cozy and spacious at the same time.
After the Mixer we had dinner there. I had the Seared Ahi which was not only delicious but the presentation was awesome. I highly recommend Sugar Beets to anyone looking or both fine dining and great service.
