Went to other craft locations my last two visits in the area based on continued comments of a lack of customer appreciation from my friends. Too bad. Â I've seen comments from other businesses out here on yelp where customers were disappointed (hello?) and am disappointed I didn't hear anything better. I am a crazy craft beer fan and do hope you make it, but please don't forget why you do what you do. It's not all about the money, is it? At least I sure hope the money isn't the #1 with you. Enjoy what you do and why you do it for the right reasons.
Review Source:We will not be returning here any time soon. My friends and I were treated very rudely by the staff on a recent visit.
We stopped in Sweet Mullets recently to help a good friend celebrate her birthday. Â My husband and I, along with several friends, made up a party of 8 people. Â The staff was not very accommodating to our group. Â Usually a good serving team comes by to check on your group often - not to drop a basket of pretzels and walk off without saying a word. After a while it was apparent (by their sour glances, astringent attitudes and off hand comments to us), they just wanted us gone.
My husband ordered the Captain Pilsner beer, and I got the 501 Red. Both were very underwhelming and lacked the taste I have experienced at other brew pubs. My husband's Captain had a very funky taste and smell to it. Â Price-wise, I thought it was very high - $9.00 for two beers? Â Two beers that they brew on site? Â Seriously? Â How 'bout coming down to earth here. Â This isn't New Glarus. Â
My group started playing a card game - Cards Against Humanity. Yes, it's more of an "adult" game - but - again, this is a bar. "Adult" conversations happen here. Â And yes, some members of our group were laughing and loud, but we were having a good time, and isn't that what you want to have people do in your establishment?
At first one of the owners came and told us she really liked this game, it was very fun, etc - but, if any kids came in we would have to keep the card reading / swearwords to a minimum. That's fine, and perfectly understandable - except this is an establishment that serves beer - it's a brewpub. Â So technically if children are brought in, they have to be with an adult. Â It goes without saying that if you bring a child into a bar or a brewpub, don't expect people to automatically turn into a schoolmarm, right?
One of the owners then came by and said we were supposed to be using our "inside voices." Â With apologies to the other 2 patrons in the establishment - the building is very sparsely decorated and echos quite a bit, even if you are being quiet. Â And honestly if we wanted to have gone to a library, we would have.
The passive-aggressiveness of the whole situation was rather disheartening, and frankly, surprising since the group we were with dropped quite a bit of money there. Â I didn't understand why they would single out a group of 8 people who are clearly there to 1. spend money, 2. buy their beer, 3. order their food, and 4. have a good time. Â Was it to cater to the other 2 patrons in the establishment? We'll never know, and I probably won't be back to find out. Â We wound up going down the street to the Mapleway Bowling Alley - not exactly where we saw ourselves going - but they were able to cater to our group and allowed us to have a good time. We wound up spending quite a bit of money there and I was happy to have our dollars go to a business that cared about, and catered to their patrons - not alienated them.
I had high hopes that this would be a 'regular' place for my husband and I, and my sister and brother-in-law - but alas, the rudeness by the owners was very clear indeed. Â Apparently 'our kind' was not very welcome. Â Point taken, Sweet Mullets! Very disappointing.
I'm don't consider myself a beer connoisseur. Â I don't bring my own beer to someone's house because all they have is Miller Lite. Â I'm happy to drink most any beer. Â
So, here's an unbiased review from a regular beer drinking guy. Â The place is really nice. Â The staff is friendly. Â The food portions are small and limited but they make up for it with quality and being a little different. Â As for the beer, it's like you're drinking your buddy's home brew. Â I mean that in the best possible way. Â Some of the beers won't suit everyone, but it's nice to be able to go out and try these beers that someone obviously takes a lot of pride in making. Â Pride seems to be missing in a lot of places. Â
From my understanding, the beer on tap is dependent upon what the brewer decides to make. Â I went there looking forward to trying the jalapeno beer I had heard they made. Â Didn't have it. Â They had the Autumn beer which literally tasted like you stuffed your mouth full of wet leaves and pepper. Â Didn't care for it but I dutifully finished it (again, some guy put a lot of work into it - I wasn't going to waste it) Â As someone else's review stated, it certainly did taste like Autumn. Â I really liked the other beers that they made though. Â The beers taste like nothing else I've ever had and it made for a great night at the bar. Â Tasting these small batch hand crafted beers is an experience. Â They also have homemade root beer and grape soda. Â
Don't let it's industrial park location throw you off. Â It's a really nice place and a unique drinking experience. Â
I've only been there one time so far and the only problem I had was that it seemed a little too quiet. Â A little music would be nice. Â Maybe I was there on the wrong night though. Â Other than that, everything about the place seems to have a 'home made' touch from the furnishings to the beer which makes it a very comfortable place to spend an evening. Â The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Â Try the pretzels - you won't be disappointed. Â I plan on going back again and supporting this local business.
This was our second stop after arriving in Oconomowoc (the first being checking in at the Inn). Sweet Mullet's is Oconomowoc's first brew pub... and they're doing it right!
When we were in they had six or eight beers on tap, plus a guest beer. Our favorite was the Autumn Leaf. I don't know how they managed it, but this tastes like someone put fall in a bottle. It's fresh, crisp, and so good we ended up getting a growler to take back to the Inn with us. Other high points were the IPAs and the red ale. I didn't have a single beer here that I wouldn't try again.
The staff were also great! We got there relatively late on a Wednesday night, and the cook had already left. However, the bartender heated the oven up and prepared everything we had been hoping to order, which was cool of her. She also gave us great tips of where to go in the area to purchase fresh cheese curds.
I really hope Sweet Mullet's isn't hurt by its location, which is a couple miles out of town. Not a big deal to me at all, but sometimes we get spoiled by having everything right there on Wisconsin. If you're reading this and are on the fence about heading over to check it out, I really hope you decide to go. I highly recommend it!
Ran across this place while working in Oconomowoc for a couple of weeks. I'll be honest, I went in because of the name, thinking if nothing else I could enjoy it with a somewhat ironic detachment. I did not expect, however, to find such stellar beer. I especially enjoyed to Jorge, a light ale which provides nice Jalepeno flavor but without the heat, which is saying something since I am normally a dark beer drinker. I encourage you to get the sampler so that you may enjoy the full array of offerings from this fabulous brewpub.
Review Source:Mark and Barbara have put together a really nice little brewery in the outskirts of Oconomowoc. It is in a small industrial building that they have transformed using a lot of reclaimed furniture which creates a cool look. They always have good guest beers from breweries like Furthermore and Lakefront. However, they have only been able to keep 4-5 of their own on tap at a time. Hopefully this changes as they ramp up production in house. Bring a couple friends over and watch a game, try some small plates, and a few sweet mullets beers. You wont be disappointed.
Only downside is the current lack of house-made beer as well as the location.
We had heard good things about this new brewery/pub in Oconomowoc, so we decided to stop in on our way home. Â We were sad we couldn't stay longer, and agreed on a prompt return. Â The beer was EXCELLENT! Â I enjoyed the Rye Bob, and the 501 red. Â My companion loved the stout. Â Â Being open less than a month, this place will only get better. Â We were impressed by the menu and plan on trying the food when we return. Â This will become a regular destination for us.
