Kept seeing the roadside signs advertising this joint along the 99 Highway, so I finally got it into my mind that I was gonna stop and see what was up! Â
Yay and yay! Â Ordered up the veggie burrito and a cheese quesadilla - HELLO!! Â Delish! Â The veggies, marinated and grilled to perfection in a yummy, yummy tortilla and sprinkled generously with cotija cheese - this was the SHIT!!!!!!!!!
The the quesadilla - probably about three kinds of cheese in there - cheddar, jack and cotija - grilled in salted butter (your cholesteral is not making friend with you on this one, sorry) and they cut it up into easy to grip slices - holy cow, literally, this was EXCELENTE!
I can't wait to try more of the goodies on the menu!!
Decent prices, drive-through and the restaurant looked clean and inviting.
What a great find, thank you yelp! Â This is a great alternative to fast food when traveling on the 99 freeway. Â The tacos are amazing the prices are right. Â Very authentic taqueria style mexican food. Â Very fresh and flavorful. Â I was a little nervous when I drove up because it is a converted fast food restaurant building but it was great food and the staff were very nice and attentive. Â Even my 4 yo daughter was happy with her quesadilla and whole beans. Â I had the tacos (street taco style).
If it weren't for the yelp reviews I would have been too nervous to try it out but now I will plan my trip around eating at this place.
Quesadilla.....NO, this thing is a Quesapizza!!
Don't be put off by the fact that this place is in nowheresville, off the side of the 99 in what used to be a familliar chain fast-food stop...they're putting out some of the BEST authentic Mexican food that I've had in a while.
Let me begin by saying that I'm from the central valley, so finding a mexican food restarurant, truck or street vendor is exponentially easier than finding a Starbucks. We have our share of commercial, family franchised (Robertitos and Arsenios) and unique individual restaurants and vendors each creating their own style of mexican food. Â Some take the time and effort to make great food, while others simply focus of food cost and quantity thinking its somehow key to a succesful dining experience.
Much like a few of the better Mexican restaurants, the food we recieved was both appealing, aromatic and unique in flavor and construction. Â
As I said before, the Quesadilla...or what my friends and I call a Quesapizza, is no regualr quesadilla. This beautiful creation comes stuffed full of your choice of meat (which comes from a nearly exhaustive number of choices!!), their salsa and of course, COPIUS ammounts of queso!! But my friends, this is not all... Unlike any other place that I have ordered a quesadilla, this latin jewel came topped with fresh lettuce, chopped tomatos, and crema (sour cream for all the Juerros like me) to complete this perfect snack.
Normally, a quesadilla is a great starter. This one could be your entire meal! I was genuinely impressed with both the food, and the service. Whenever I head up 99 toward Sacramento or Merced, I make it a point to stop at Tacos El Grullense for a quesadilla (quesapizza, lol) and some of their great tacos...yes, the rest of their food is good too, but I HAD to mention the quesadilla, it alone is worth making a trip there.
Perfect cheap mexican food. Tried the chicken quesadilla( which they serve with sour cream and salsa) and carne asada burrito. Both extremely delicious and big potions.  They  add loads of cheese and oil so skip it if your watching calories; but really yummy option if you are looking for a big, hearty, meaty, Mexican food option.
Review Source:Wow! Amazing Mexican food at great prices. Don't be deceived that it is in a former a Taco Bell building, the food from here does not resemble fast food at all. Fresh ingredients and flavorful meat make some of the best food you could get from a drive thru. Â
First off, probably the best Quesadilla that I have ever had. The tortilla was fresh and crisp filled with gooey cheese, spicy sauce, and perfectly seasoned carne asada. It came topped with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, and sour cream which perfectly balanced the richness and heat of the Quesadilla. Not only was it huge but it came cut into bite size pieces which made it easier to eat. I felt like I was eating this amazing Mexican Lasagna, it was just layered with flavor. Best of all it was only $5, absolutely amazing for the price. My boyfriend had the tacos which he said were really good. He was absolutely red and sweating profusely when he said this, I guess the tacos were a bit spicy for him.
This is definitely a place worth stopping at if you are passing thru on the 99 or in the area. I know I will be stopping here again for some of their great food.
This is one of those places that is better than it looks. The decor is simple and unexciting. When in Chowchila this is my first choice. The food is always good, it has a homemade taste that is hard to achieve in a restaurant. The menu is straightforward. Â If you find yourself in the area give it a try.
Review Source:Best Mexican in Chowchilla is what it says on the sign coming up on the 99 North. Â Being someone who can eat Mexican food 2x a day, I thought I had to stop. Â
The place looks like a regular fast food restaurant when you walk in. Â First impression when I walked in was that it was SUPER clean. Â Probably one of the cleanest places I have been to in a while that serves quick/inexpensive/on-the-go food. Â
Their menu isn't overly extensive - but it is pure Mexican, meaning you will not find a Tostada on the menu, but you will see that Menudo is served daily. Â
I ordered three Carne Asada taco's. Â They are served on two corn tortillas with the carne asada on top, with onions and a pretty spicy salsa - and two wedges of lemon's to sprinkle on top. Â So Very Good - and Very Traditional! Â And, their horchata was fantastic. Â
As much as I don't travel the 99 freeway north, I may bypass the 5 next time just to have this great authentic Mexican Food.
Awesome burrito - and cheap! Â Both the chicken and the carne asada were well cooked. Â Toppings in the super burrito were fresh and tasty and included a generous amount of tomatoes and gauc. We both were filled up for under $10!
This is definitely a great place to stop while traveling on 99.
