This place is definitely something you would expect to be in San Marcos. It started with the concert getting started much later than advertised and they didn't even start accepting tickets to get in until it was almost 30 minutes after the official start time. I could barely see the stage and it wasn't as crowded as it could be. From the second level, if you aren't on very inside rail you can't see the stage at all. The concerts might be pretty good if you get one of the reserved seats downstairs or standing room right behind it but for such a small venue you should get a decent view anywhere. The drinks weren't too pricey. All in all. if you have to go to a concert in San Marcos it's okay but definitely not worth traveling to from the surrounding areas.
Review Source:I really enjoyed all the times I came here! I come from an urban city where I hear mostly pop/ techno music, but this place got the country girl out of me! Â
They do have a variety of performances, so be sure to check out their website to see which night venues and performances you'd like best.
You wouldn't believe you're at a venue on the Square in San Marcos while enjoying a cold one and listening to Texas Country.
I've been to numerous concerts at TMT and have never been disappointed in the sound, feel and stiff drinks this place gives me!
This past weekend I saw Ray Wylie Hubbard, a Texas music legend, who played for a small crowd of about 50. He mentioned numerous times that this was one of his favorite venues to play at not because the crowd was huge but because the helpful crew in the back, friendly owners and acoustics of the place. He was not the only person who mentioned the amazing staff & acoustics, pretty much everyone I have seen there, including 2 MR Fest Music Festivals have stated how much they enjoy TMT.
With 3 huge bars throughout TMT, you're never too far away from a stiff drink. Upstairs they've got a balcony that lines the edge of the building and looks down onto the dance floor.
I wouldn't say the drinks are a steal or anything seeing that their wells were on "special" for $5 each (compared to some places on the Square or in Austin where you can get a pitcher of a well drink for $5) but the atmosphere of this place will have me coming back over & over again.
What an outstanding venue! The guys who run this spot are two super cool brothers who know what the hell they're doing. This is definitely a spot I'd love to pick up and drop in Austin. The sound is spot on, the layout is fabulous and the drinks are strooooooong.
I'm desperate to come to another show here to drool over my favorite texas musicians. It doesnt hurt that they hire gorgeous bartenders or that there's a sweet dance floor... made only sweeter by the fact that the AC is pumpin and keeping your full on sweat at bay.
If you're in SM on the square, check to see what's happening here first. The class acts coming through here are pretty outstanding and the venue is the perfect size that there's not a bad seat in the house.
Performing at The Texas Music Theater on December 3, 2011, was an awesome experience for us, Sister Sister y Los Misters! Everyone, from the owners to sound & stage engineers, and everyone in between were very nice, professional, and gave us the "royal" treatment.
If you missed our show, 'Friend' Sister Sister y Los Misters on facebook. You can also listen to our second cd, "Latino Rocks" at <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.myspace.com%2Fsistersisterylosmisters&s=999ac725f8d55f2df0b2c90ac2eff9137d1be76e803276e69bcc27641b4b1e38" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.myspace.com/s…</a>.
Sister Sister y Los Misters was the opening act for the Little Joe y la Familia. Both bands put on awesome shows that night! We complemented each other.
What better way to showcase this wonderful venue! I love the Texas Music Theater!
This was a very memorable destination for my first trip to San Marcos. Went to see one of my favorite bands because the San Marcos show was cheaper than the Austin one. The venue is situated in the charming little town square, nice area to stroll around before the show.
First impression was that it was very cold inside--powerful A/C, which always makes concert venues feel corporate to me. But I appreciated it later when we were dancing in a sweaty crowd. Â Also, lots of people were smoking cigarettes, which bothered me. I realize that probably sounds prissy, but I guess I'd gotten used to no smoking in most Austin venues.
The people of San Marcos at the show were a very odd crowd. Most were uber-hipsters (dressed more flamboyantly than in Austin) but some were random country or frat types just looking for a party. At one point I was almost wiped out (literally, almost knocked over) by a huge, drunken, rowdy bachelorette party. Also, the bouncer/ticket taker guy was really gruff and unhelpful. On the plus side, plentiful seating upstairs was great.
Overall, this was only 30 minutes from Austin, but it was a totally different cultural experience. I'd go again.
This venue is great! They have an upstairs where you can easily see the band and relax as well as a great place to dance downstairs and drinks are reasonable. HOWEVER some complete a** of a man runs the front door (the same short portly goateed bouncer mentioned earlier). He was so rude to me and all of my friends. And when I went to the bathroom there were people talking about how awful he is. I'm only writing this review in hopes that his boss will see it and fire him.
Review Source:A few new bars have opened their doors on the square in San Marcos over the last few years but none have come in with the hype and promise that Texas Music Theater has. Believe the hype! This place is everything you hoped for and more!
Multiple levels with multiple bars make this place seem twice as large as it did when it was opened as Gordo's. The owner's clearly put a lot of money into this establishment, everything is shiny and new, nothing looks cheap.
The stage was large and with a venue that can hold up to 1,000 people, this place will surely be a destination for any big act coming through San Marcos.
They play a range of music from Electronic to Country and everything in between. I first went on a Thursday evening and they played a 50/50 split of country and hip-hop. I'm not a country fan, but I can see where you have to cater somewhat to the native population, and I wasn't upset about it. The place was packed and there was a fun attitude in the crowd.
Miller Lite cans were only $2.50, no complaining there!
This is an awesome new venue and something the city of San Marcos desperately needed, as Austin steals much of the live music scene. Check this place out, especially for a live music show, you know I'll be in attendance!
This is a true destination on the square in San Marcos. Â It is hard to talk about acoustics but it's not like talking about music, or dancing about architecture for that matter. Â The acoustics here are great and the architecture is appropriate. Â This renovated theater on the square didn't have to change much to become an awesome music venue. Â There is plenty of room in the pit in front of the stage, and a balcony surrounds the back of the theater. Â The stage would do well to welcome traveling acts who play the college circuit, and with a capacity of 1000 it could certainly pack them in.
This venue us spacious and yet intimate. Â It reminded me of the Austin music hall when it still had a soul. Â Before it got too big for its britches. According to its owners who are devoted to music and musicians, this venue boasts a state of the art sound and lighting system that is as good as what can be found anywhere.
From the types of shows they had sandwiching our dance party, I am fairly certain that this is the next discovery for the jaded Austinite looking to roadtrip far enough away to not feel like Austin, but not so far that one might fear for their life in the backwoods of some other small town at a honky-tonk where the room gets quiet when you walk in and order a cosmo. Â
*Screech!* Â
"What, ain't they got beer whar yore frum city slicker?"
You will not be disappointed by TMT.
