Just plain good food and nice people. Â Nice old-fashioned diner atmosphere. Clean and neat and comfy. Hamburgers were GREAT and french fries fresh and delicious. The chocolate malts were sooooo good with the extra in the metal container.
Suggestion: Put in ice cream, then the malt, then the milk so that the malt isn't all at the bottom. Or add malt as it's mixing. But they were still delicious.
GREAT JOB. We'll be back-many times and we're from Moscow.
This place will fool you into thinking it's an ordinary little small town diner. Get ready, though! The food can surprise you! Best chili burger I've ever had -- spicy chorizo chili smothering a moist, hand-pressed burger. Yum! Even the Reuben, made with house-made corn beef was surprisingly good. Nothing ordinary here!
Staff is super friendly to the regulars (including a 100+ year old who visits every Friday) and to us visitors, as well.
On a road trip with the father to check out some wheat and we happened to stop by in Colfax. The town itself is not very big, so they have monopolized the breakfast/diner scene.
Dropped in to fuel up for the long trip back to Seattle, and while it isn't some pampered brunch experience you would get a some trendy new urban spot, it is a nice throwback that hearkens to an earlier time in the American food experience.
A diner in the same vein of diner as made famous by the Garden State, Top Notch does its job admirably. It provides the classic staples of omelettes, burgers, shakes, and pie. Generous portions and a kind waitstaff lends to an enjoyable reprieve of classic Americana on the return highway to the banalities of urbane living.
We had a great stop here for lunch after checking out Palouse Falls. The service was great as was the food. The proprietor makes his own pulled pork and coleslaw which both contributed to amazing pulled pork sandwich. They were patient with our kids and there were good offerings for children on the menu. The prices were very reasonable. The burgers were good, but not amazing. The cob salad was fresh and the club sandwich had lots of meat. Â We were particularly impressed with the care the staff showed for a handicapped gentleman.
Review Source:Do not stop here for a Huckelberry milk shake! Â You try this once, you will forever be l a t e for your Spokane appointments. In all the places I've ever had a milk shake, or "food" for that matter it is easy to say the "Top Notch" is top notch! Â Ok, so the only other place i've "dined" in this, the county seat of Whitman County, is the local Rosauers grocery store. Â The Huckelberry milk shake is sinfully delicious. The staff couldn't be nicer, nor could they try harder. Â
I'm stopping again!
Considering it basically has zero competition in Colfax, the quality of the Top Notch Cafe really isn't too shabby. I pass by the place all the time on my way to or from Spokane but rarely see it open. This is because it is only open for breakfast and lunch (5:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) both of which it serves at all hours.
I stopped in for lunch on my way to the airport recently. Prices are very reasonable. A sandwich and fries will run about $6 to $8. The "kitchen" sports only a couple of deep fryers, a bin of veggie toppings, a flat top grill and an additional electric griddle for busy hours.
The Top Notch burger was tempting - two quarter-pound patties with ham, bacon and all the trimmings - but I didn't feel like a heart attack that day. Instead I opted for the Patty Melt.
Points for actually having some rye bread, first of all. Secondly, just a simple combination of grilled onions, shredded cheese and beef put together in a conscientious manner can be delicious. This is simplicity at its best.
I also had a cup of chili. The menu described it as containing chorizo, but it was ground beef and fairly flavorless. However, it was chunky and obviously made in-house.
I can't speak for the rest of the menu, but it seems they stick to the simple stuff, put in good ingredients and a little bit of time, and come out with a decent product.
It's worth a stop.
The breakfast here is OK. It's probably the only place in town for breakfast, so I'm not saying it's so bad I would avoid it, but it got talked up a little bit amongst locals, which it maybe didn't deserve.
Their omelets were fine, but corned beef hash was reported as more hash than corned beef. Not really what was expected.
All in all, just...unremarkable.
