Ahhh!! I love this place!! Great happy hour (even on weekends, check their website for the hours). Try the poka-loa roll (spell check?) it is friggin delicious. And then you can finish off with a happy ending dessert. Nothing quite so delicious as tempura fried oreo cookies sandwiched around a scoop of ice cream and topped with whipped cream and a cherry. To make it extra bomb, get it with green tea ice cream. Omg! So good. Staff is super attentive, and yes they can get busy, so don't trip balls like the other reviewers here when they aren't sitting in your lap waiting for you to decide on something. Sushi chefs are also really cool to sit with and they'll make sure you're taken care of. Oh! And don't forget the chilled patron and jager shots. Mmmm... Nobody wants a watered down shot because they needed to shake it to make it cold :) i'll be going back!
Review Source:Chiliyaki Chicken Wings - Really good!
Toro Trio Appetizer - subpar and lacking
MOUN-10 roll - good but nothing great.
Super Diablo Roll - topped with langostino and set on fire tableside. Â It was too salty. Â I could barely eat it.
Salmon Skin Handroll - meh, just ok.
If you check in on Yelp, you can get a free dessert called Happy Ending. Â I think it was deep fried Oreos with ice cream. Â It was pretty good.
Service was ok. Â Overall, the food was average. Â So many way better sushi restaurants out there.
I don't even know where to start! This place is the worst sushi bar ever. Yelp has no idea how much a regret to come here.
First off, took my bf here for his bday, this wasnt just a date night. There were 12-15 people that came with us. Had reservations for 8 ish 830. Yes. Came late. But when we walked in are table was already set up. Idk, why we were waiting for 25 minutes. Whatever. We sat down 15 people, we got 3 ginger and wasabi plates, 3 menus. What the fuck ?! How we all ganna divide small quartered sized wasabi or ginger between us many people. Besides the point, the waiter was so bad. Didnt want to even do a sake bomb with us. Her words "I'm sorry we don't do those, you can do them with your group" WOW!
The sushi was okay, nothing special, especially because they were so small. I know better rolls that can satisfy my hunger
You don't come here. Plz, plz. Save your money!
I wish I would of read all the reviews before coming here. But my bf knows I did this dinner for him, so that's the best that came from here.
P.s they will charge you a service charge for shitty service. I promise you this place sucks ass. Maybe the night club is good but fuck, this place. Waste of 63 bucks.
The sushi here is blah and overpriced for the quality. The service here isn't that great either. I checked in and got a check in offer for a free dessert and after the waitress had already ran my card she said I couldn't use it because I already paid my bill. Really? That is so silly. Then she said that if I come back she will remember me and give me the free dessert. Why not just give it to me now? Because she already knew because of the poor quality sushi and poor service I wasn't coming back.
Review Source:I came here for dinner with a girlfriend. It seems like this striving for the classy, nightclub concept you would get in Hollywood... in the city Ontario right by the 10 freeway? I say this because there is already security in front of the establishment, a weird bar setup right when you walk in, bad top 40s music on max volume so you can't even have a real convo over dinner -_-, and dim lighting so you don't see the bad paint job on the walls, lol.
My friend and I sat at the bar and we ordered 2 sushi rolls and shared between the two of us. The sushi was mediocre at best. Pricing was okay. I think the highlight of my meal there was the free ice cream at the end (when you check in on Yelp!). Deep fried oreos with ice cream... so good lol.
Other than that, it was just a weird restaurant to visit.
Love love love this place....went here last Friday night and was served by Jennie. Â She was awesome!!!m!Loved the 80's Friday dance....Angela our chef was wonderful and even the security was pleasant. Â This is a place u would wanna take ur friends to that were visiting from outta town...they would beimpressed with good food...good service and excellent music! Â Cudos!
Review Source:I was totally ignored by ALL THE SERVERS. This has to be hands down the WORST & RUDE SERVICE I've ever had. Had an awful dinner with my family and wasted my money ($120 would have been more but couldn't get anyone to take our order). Had to self serve my family the whole night, set up my tables with napkins and chopsticks, was ignored for 30 mins after I first sat even though every waiter walked by us as 6 of us (my party) stared at each one to see who would help us (we sat in front of the sushi bar), and ended up having to get up and order everything from the bartender! Fire all the young kids, they are disrespecting you by  representing your business extremely poorly.
1 hour and 45 minutes and still not even appetizers, place wasn't packed, i had to self serve pretty much everything , Sunday night 1/20/13 at about 6:00pm. They weren't busy, they were all just being rude and purposely ignored us. Thank god for the bartender (Amanda W.) otherwise we wouldn't have received ANYTHING. So mad at how rude and "snotty" they all were, that I will surely post this on any review and not recommend this sushi place ever. Fire all the kids! Our server was Nicole and I'd say she should be the first to go.
SUPER AWFUL - NICOLE & EVERYONE OTHER THAN THE TWO LISTED BELOW
GREAT - BARTENDER AMANDA W & REALLY TALL BLONDE GUY
I love me some SUSHU, SAKE, and UNI!
This place covered my palate.
We came here during happy hour and ordered
$1 - Edamame
$3 - Gyoza
$4 - Seaweed Salad
Chilliyaki wings (FAIL - they were out)
$7 - Tuna Tataki Carpaccio (AWESOME!!)
$7 - Albacore Carpaccio (AWESOME!!)
a bunch of $1 hot sake  & a bunch of $2 sake bombs
Thanks to yelp, we were given a FREE HAPPY ENDING!! oh man!! ORGASM to the fullest!!!
Thanks TORO, I WILL BE BACK AGAIN! Hopefully I can score another FREE HAPPY ENDING :P
Negative star!!!
I was around the area so I was craving some Sushi
The food is not worth it!!! Save your money go somewhere else I thought by the looks of the restaurant it would have been good (I messed up by not reading previous reviews and photos on yelp) when I order my food I was expecting some bomb sushi. Â The waitress brought the sushi rolls it seemed it was from the kids menu I was like REALLY!
I didn't like the taste but like they say "you get what you pay for" I would not definitely come back at all I rather go to my favorite sushi spot "Kabuki"
10/26/12 Â Had lunch here with my wife, and it was disgusting. Â The over all cleanliness of the establishment was sub-par at best. Â Food debris across tables and across the floor. Â Staff playing around as if it were a hang out rather than a professional establishment of service.
The seats are cheap, and the booth back black cloth was absolutely dirty, stained and the place had an over all feel of cheap dirty filth.
The tables weren't level and wobbled, and this was after checking the first three.
Onto the food, the wife said her food tasted ok, she had some Diablo roll concoction, which the rolls looked as if they were dried out.
I had some Teriyaki dish, which wasn't awful, but again nothing to brag about neither.
The white rice smelled, if it were from the day before, just drenched with iron rich tap water and reheated in a rice cooker, and tasted absolutely as described.
Over all If I could leave a zero rating I would, but the nice girl who served us was prompt and very courteous.
I wouldn't suggest anyone wanting to eat some decent Japanese to ever consider this place, Yoshinoya Bowls are honestly better, and that isn't saying much.
So in short:
Cleanliness: D-
Food: C- ( wife said her meal was fine ) otherwise F-
Waitress: A
General Staff: D ( Talking about your weekend plans as loudly as you did, might as well used a megaphone )
BEWARE: STAY AWAY!
Decor: nicer, trendier strip mall sushi joint; it's a lounge at night to it is trying to hard to be trendy
Service: we were one of five tables at lunch and still received poor service; asked for water twice and never got it
Food: fish seemed fresh on my sushi, miso soup was foul tasting, my girlfriends tempura was over-battered and was not edible
Went here on a Sunday for happy hour.
the wife and I made our way through the happy hour menu and ordered a few hot, cold and sahimi. Everything had that "not quite right" taste to it.
We figured it might be just the happy hour menu so we ordered a few rolls from the standard menu...still something tasted off and sorta foul.
Well...later that evening the wife and I paid for our sushi sins and continued to pay for it over the next three days.
It was so unpleasant that I find myself physically flipping this place off whenever I drive by.
I was pretty impressed by this place. I've been here twice, and both times service has been good, and food has been tasty.I like to look for consistency in restaurants, and this place (judging from the two times I have been;) seems to have it.
The rolls are good, nothing too impressive, but good.
I don't remember what I ordered the first time I came here, but the second time I ordered the Diablo Roll (recommend), Luvulongtime Roll (pretty good), and the 50/50 (I didn't care for it, but my boyfriend enjoyed it).
I love how they offer freebies when checked in on yelp. The first time I went they gave free sake bombs, and the second time they gave a dessert called Happy Ending (and it truly did make for an amazing happy ending! Delicious). So be sure to always check in here! :D
You can see this restaurant from the 10 freeway, so finding this place shouldn't be that hard :) Plus there is an ample amount of parking available in the plaza.
One thing I didn't like was how sticky the tables were.. and the menus. :/ They should really work on better cleaning techniques..
So first let me say... What kind of restaurant runs out of white wine on a Friday night at 6:30pm?? I went here on a friend's recommendation....mistake.
While the sushi is "ok" nothing to rave about, the waitresses are petite and cute in tight tops. The decor is tired and worn, the tables were "sticky" and the floors needed to be scrubbed. The black "leather" chairs were ripped on the corners...for what this place charges for sushi they should spend more on housekeeping and hiring a better bar manager.
It was unclean and cheap decor, while trying to be hip and trendy. I won't be back, that is for sure!
This restaurant pretty much solidify my beliefs about why no one should eat sushi
in the IE. I know I'll be getting a lot of slacks for this, but I need to warn someone, ANYONE about staying away from this establishment.
Hawaiian Volcano - Cali roll topped with a lot of dynamite sauce. Lacking flavor and dull! Don't let a sizzling plate and fire fool you into ordering it unless you want to pay $12+ for mediocre cali roll slather with spicy mayo.
Any Rolls - Ever wonder why rolls are so cheap? Because they use really old pieces of fish! I ordered a couple of things not even worth mentioning, but what stuck in my head was how brown their tuna looked. Salmon so slimey I can't just can't take another bite.
The only sushi I ordered was Uni, which was surprisingly fresh and not that bad at all.
Waitresses aim to please but slow. I hope their Pasadena location is better.
This is a place to stuff yourself silly! Â We ordered a lot, too much--cocktails and sushi rolls galore. Â If you're one of those people expecting a high quality fish experience in what's really a sushi-bar-place, you've got to wake up. Â This is a restaurant with rolls, not high-grade sashimi and if you have the proper expectations I think you'll enjoy it and have fun.
What I didn't particularly like was how heavy everything was. Â I swear every bite made my arteries feel abused. What I did like was how inventive their rolls were. Â The only downside is that some of the flavors just didn't jive all too well...but plus points for trying. Â The food just tasted like a Kabuki remake and if you like Kabuki, more power to you...I personally am not a fan of rolls dredged in mayo and topped with fried everything...
Sushi restaurants are a dime a dozen in Southern California now. And boy this dime aint shinning.
Arrived around lunch time on a Thursday wanting a good quick bite before work. We walked in seeing a huge bar and pretty cool looking decor which looked like it would be a nightclub at night. There was one other person at the sushi bar with us.
This is the rundown:
We ordered what they told us was their best seller which was some time of spicy roll. It was ok but tasted really commercial if that makes sense. It was something that would please the masses but not a true sushi lover.
The second roll was a fried longistino roll. Same taste, same outcome.
The last was crispy spicy chicken wings which were not bad. actually pretty good compared to everything else.
But the reason I knock this place is that the sushi should shine not the chicken!!! lol
I guess this place turns into a lounge at night; maybe when you are drinking the sushi tastes better hahaha. Wont come again for the sushi.
Came here the Monday before Valentines. Â We are not big sushi people, but have had it a few times. Â This was our second visit here.
Sat right away, not busy. Â Staff here is excellent. Â We noticed the happy hour menu, so asked about the portion sizes because the price was extremely lower. Â We decided to go with the happy hour menu and try stuff, since we dont really know what we like. Â We got one roll from the main menu, it was on fire, it was good. Â We got I think 10 things off the happy hour menu. Â We would order 2-3 things, Â less than 5 minutes later they would arrive, and we would order 2-3 more things. Â The timing was perfect. Â Nice portions just kept coming and we tried a lot of stuff. Â It was very enjoyable and the staff was great. Â Bill was less than $50. Â I was really happy. Â A fun evening for 2 for our early Valentines night out.
Let me start out with the positive, the owners and the wait staff, LOVE them. They really made me and one of my best girls, feel like VIPs. We suspect they suspected we were either food bloggers or food critics, or maybe they just are cool people. Either way, they rock.
The food?! Well although fresh and delicious, was rather overpriced and inauthentic for sushi. And, while I get this place is going for (maybe) originality, eclectic, and/or a hipster type feel, the price of food just didn't vibe with the decor and ambiance. I'll get to that later.
The negatives:
1. The decor needs a serious upgrade. My friend and I walked in and almost walked right back out. For one, it's totally not a lounge. Two, it could be much cleaner. Oh, and the bathroom. *sigh*
2. At around 9:30 o 10 it converts to a "club" with DJ. Â That's cool and all, but again the space is not set up correctly to be a lounge or converted club. Also, the people were an interesting mix. You had your Cha-Cha Mamas, old cat daddies, Asian hipsters, & eses/cholos (my Cali peeps know what I'm talking about). Just a random mix of people.
3. You aren't allowed glass drinks once the restaurant converts to a "club." That right there should tell you what type of place you're working with.
4. There bar drinks are super weak and the presentation is lacking. I ordered Lemon Drops and they were merely Lemon Drop shots served in a beer cup. *shudder*
All in all this isn't a place I'd come back too. But, I guess if you're a youngin (or a person not really used to certain things) this would be an OK kicking spot. I just can't do it.
9.10.11 So I bought a <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Frestaurant.com&s=c5fe485af4df376130bee54f875814d79c4d7913e1258123b1206d2bdbf4873b" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://restaurant.com</a> certificate and it's because the reviews were actually decent. Boy... was these people super wrong. First we ordered the Agedashi Tofu..They were supposed to serve it in tempura sauce; well the sauce they gave me was extremely something else. I thought maybe the girl made a mistake so I asked for another bowl of sauce and once again it was the same thing and it tasted like soy sauce. I forgot to mention that it took 35-40 minutes to get this one dish. About 55 minutes later we got the rest of our order.
Everything was decent we ordered the sashimi plate, miso cod and some other side dishes. Nothing spectacular except for their service, our waters were constantly refilled with no questions asked. All the staff who passed by our tables took away empty dishes. It was a great team work environment. However the food is not up to par. The last thing we ordered was Toro. Yup it is a fish and a name of the restaurant. It was expensive and super gross! I was highly disappointed. I would not come here again because the wait was way too long. I'm not sure why the sushi chefs were taking awhile. I could see that they were working hard, but I would not wait 1 hour for my food to come.
The place became a bar/clubish type place at night. The bar area is way too small to have anyone actually lounge around. They do have a patio but it was cold outside. Overall just two stars..
The mixed reviews make sense because Toro is not your typical sushi spot. Understandably, patrons may be expecting one thing but get something entirely different. Toro is a sushi restaurant with multiple personalities. It's a bar, grill, night spot, lounge, karaoke bar, and dance club rolled in a seaweed sushi wrap. In an attempt to provide the best overall dining and social experience, it makes sense that some people may have gotten lost in the mix. My advice, check out their daily schedule and go on a night that's most appealing to you, whether it's Karoake Tuesdays or Rewind Friday Night (a club-like tribute to the 80s and 90s).
I personally love the place. Having been there plenty of times for the nightlife, I return at least once a month to get my Toro fix. I finally had a normal dinner at the sushi bar with my gf yesterday and am glad to say that the experience was wonderful. The sushi chefs were personable and fun to talk to. The wait staff was attentive, kind, and available. Best of all, one of the owners actually sat with us for a while to inquire about our experience in comparison with other sushi restaurants. In a nutshell, in response to some negative reviews, he was actively working to see what could be done to improve the overall dining experience. This proactive ownership tells me that this place is only going to get better.
Toro sushi rolls are a bit pricey, but they are obviously larger than any other rolls I've seen elsewhere. The owner told us that they are working on a "half-size" at half the price. He had us try a sample of the mini roll and the size is comparable to the regular rolls at other restaurants! This new menu option and more will be available by next month; I for one am looking forward to it.
The food is great, the ambiance is smooth, and the people are a pleasure to be around. My favorite Toro times are All-day Happy Hour Mondays ($1 Sake!) and Rewind Friday Nights (gotta love 90s music!). Find out what aspect of Toro best suits you and you won't be disappointed.
Word is a new Toro will be opening in Pasadena by the end of the year! Whoot!
They may not be perfect yet, but I give Toro 5 stars because they have the kind of ownership and staff to get them there. Toro is a work-in-progress with a proactive ownership group. Check em out and let them know what you liked and what they can keep doing to continue improving. In my book, Toro is "as good as it gets."
Personal secret: I love the sushi and their popular rolls are pretty darn good, but my favorite dish is actually the Kobe Beef Sliders... unbelievably delicious.
Go Dodgers!
I came here for date night with the fiancee a couple of weeks ago. He said, "Babe, don't get dressed up. We'll just go and grab something to eat real quick." OK, I was down with that. I didn't feel like dressing up anyway.
We had been wanting to go here forever because we had heard that the food was good. What we didn't hear about was the club-like atmosphere.I know it's advertised as "nightlife, bar, grill, lounge, and sushi," but it totally threw me off! There were club posters hanging on the walls, advertising drink specials, karaoke nights, DJ's and what-not. The floors were kind of dirty like you would expect to see at a club as well. It was like they couldn't make up their minds. Are we a club, or are we an upscale sushi restaurant? I couldn't quite figure it out either.
Now, for the food. We sat at the sushi bar. The chef that helped us was very friendly and gave us great suggestions. And the sushi menu is big, with different rolls and combos, a lot that we've never seen before. My fiancee ordered the Paka-Lo-Roll and I ordered the P-Whip. Both were very good. Ooh, and the Saki??? Try the Pinapple Infusion. Delish!
As it got later, the girls and their dresses got smaller. That's when me and the fiancee decided to head out. Not really sure if we'll be back again. Definitely not the place if you're just looking for an intimate dinner for two an a Sat. night.
AMAZING SERVICE AND FOOD! :)
SERVICE: My bf, cousin and I came at around 8:30 pm and we were immediately seated. Our waitress, Cheryl, came and I gave her the $25.00 gift certificate from <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Frestaurant.com&s=c5fe485af4df376130bee54f875814d79c4d7913e1258123b1206d2bdbf4873b" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://restaurant.com</a> and asked if we each can have the free drinks and desert because we mentioned yelp. The waitress said she'll ask her manager and they said YES! woo hooo!! Great start! The waitresses were super nice and friendly. They got us whatever we asked for immediately and asked us if we needed refills as soon as our cup was almost empty.
FOOD: The food came out pretty quick. We ordered 6 dishes:
1. Sexy Mexi roll: $12.50
2. Love u long time roll: $15.00
3. Philly Roll: $7.00
4. Rainbow roll: $12.00
5. New York Steak: $17.00
6. Hawaiian Volcano Roll: $13.50
Drinks
1. Green tea: 2.50
2. Iced sweeten green tea: 2.50
3. Cranberry: 3.00
Desert:
Happy Ending: 4.50
The food was delicious! My favorite dishes were the philly roll and love u long time! My bf's favorite dish was the new york steak that came with miso soup, fried rice, and a salad! He also liked the cute waitresses! :)
Our bill came out to be.....$74.86, including tax and tip!!!!!! :) If it wasn't for the <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Frestaurant.com&s=c5fe485af4df376130bee54f875814d79c4d7913e1258123b1206d2bdbf4873b" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://restaurant.com</a> gift certificate and the yelp deal..our bill would have been over $100!
We will definitely be coming back here! :) Thank you Toro for an amazing experience! :)
Kinda like two virgins having sex, everyone's trying real hard but afterwards you're not really satisfied.
Two years ago Toro's greatest asset was it's grill and in particular the fantastic chef they had. Â After he left the grill went down hill and now looks like an after thought.
Toro still has great atmosphere and a very ambitious menu.
Our last visit our appetizer's hit the table 60 secs before my Kobe Ribeye. Â Obviously at thirty dollars a pop the ribeye took priority. The ribeye was good as were the vegetables they were complimented with.
We were happy to hear it was Happy Hour, but being served beer in a plastic cup in a dining room they obviously worked hard upon, is a bit like buying a BMW and hanging fuzzy dice from the mirror.
Toro could be so much more with a bit more effort.
I recently received a message from the owner apologizing for our experience. He graciously offered us to come back to give them another shot. I can't take the offer, but I do respect the fact that he deeply cares about his business. Thats why im changing my rating to 3 stars.
I think we probably went on an off night. I will definitely go back again. Â Especially when you know the owner cares about it's success.
We accidentally stumbled on this place and loved it! The inside was very cool and had interesting decorating. We decided to sit at the sushi bar instead of at a table, and it was definitely a good choice!
The sushi chefs are there to talk to, to watch, they make you recommendations based on what you tried and liked, and that's a great touch. When you sit at the bar you have the flexibility to change anything about the sushi. We ordered a few spicy rolls with rare tuna and other various delicious things (I can't quite remember since this was a few months ago). I do remember that we also go the baked mussels with some kind of sweet and spicy sauce on them... my god... they were incredible!
The whole atmosphere is really nice and they have a night club they do on Thursdays (have to check it out before I can judge it)... this might sound weird but the paintings in the bathrooms are beautiful!! The staff is super nice and friendly, and overall I really enjoyed the place. I'll have to go back again soon to make sure it's still as nice the 2nd time around :)
My visit to Toro Sushi culminated with a Happy Ending... if only more things in life ended with a happy ending... pun intended!
While my friend and I were shopping at Victoria Gardens, er, more like window shopping, we got hungry. Because we didn't want to eat at the mall we  decided to embark on a mission to find a hole in the wall, dirt cheap, sushi spot; instead we found Toro Sushi.
After reading the Yelp reviews we decided that Toro might not be dirt cheap, but it sounded like they serve delicious food. Well... i'm here to tell you this is true and that the prices were reasonable. Â
My friend got a combo plate- it came with two slices of chicken with fresh veggies, a side salad, rice and miso soup. All for $12.00. That's pretty damn reasonable!
I got a California Roll- it was pretty long (that's what she said), and a side of Shrimp Tempura. The Shrimp Tempura was only $4.00 and it came with four jumbo shrimps- score! Overall, everything was delish!
The service was magnificent; I could tell the servers wanted our stay to be a good one. I was impressed.
Oh, and that happy ending? Check out my picture:
<a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/aP7KW2w0EmO-FMgf8w-5Gw?userid=MaJJgvbf2hGqnwZ5jUB4BQ">http://www.yelp.com/biz_…</a>
This dessert alone gave them five stars! I believe they have a coupon you can print to get the Happy Ending on the house. Ergo, you, my friend, can get your Happy Ending for free!! What are you waiting for; Do it (that's what she said)?!
Why oh why did we get suckered into the <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Frestaurant.com&s=c5fe485af4df376130bee54f875814d79c4d7913e1258123b1206d2bdbf4873b" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://restaurant.com</a> $25 for $10 coupon (but you have to spend $50 and there's an automatic 18% "service charge" btw)??? Â Oh, because we wanted some japanese and didn't want to miss our movie. Â
So they PF CHANGed chinese food, El Toritoed mexican food, and here they Toro'ed Japanese food. Â How do they call their tempura, tempura?! Â It's like onion ring beer batter. Â I give em a point for not having mushy batter, but c'mon! Â The "ponzu" sauce was sooo soy sauced and they didn't gimme grated daikon! Â
My hubby knew better than to straight up order sushi so he started with one order of Sake (salmon)...he wasn't happy with freshness, or the lack thereof.  We got a sexy mexi roll for me  cause i'm prego and shouldn't eat raw fish.  Can't believe we paid $12 for imitation crab and a dabble of shrimp and a piece of avocado (the menu read shrimp and crab with jalepenos, avo, and cilantro) The toro tacos were alright...what's up with the pinch of wasabi cream?
Then to meet our $50 quota, i ordered a bowl of udon soup and he the garlic noodle. Â OMG i can make better udon noodle out of a bag. Â THe broth was flavorless and the veggies way undercooked. Â THe garlic noodles were top ramen noodles but did have a nice garlic flavor. Â I SHOULDve known better. Â But if you're gonna put something on your menu, at least make it edible. Â I always make it a point to finish my food, but i just couldn't.
If we ever came back, it would be for the tempura ice cream. Â They hook it up there. Â But i doubt we'll be coming back.
So, in conclusion, if you are a true fan of japanese food. Â Save your stomach space and money and head over to Kazama (amazing fresh fish) or Hayato (yummy tempura and bentos) in Claremont. Â But if you are looking for some sake bombs, loud music, and rice with various ok sauces and mediocre ingredients...then why not here?
...and we ended up missing our movie anyways... :(
Toro, is really such a weird place... I mean the sushi is awesome, I love anything that has the wasabi cream sauce they make and i recommend that you try it! but there's just something different about this place.
The girlfriend and I have been here a few times and show up early, it seems like its a quiet place, but then the music starts. Theres a Live DJ here, a dance floor, Â theres a room for Karaoke, and a full bar??? They should just change the name to Club Toro, lol. Im not complaining, it just caught me off guard.
Definitely a place worth trying if you are in the area, just get there early before the bouncer sets up at the door.
Came here again because I felt like some sushi and drinks, was looking forward to HH prices, but were told we had to sit at the bar, which we did not feel like doing and the HH deals were not good enough to make change our minds. We printed the certificate so we got hooked up with a sake bomb each, love free booze, and a happy ending after dinner. The gf got a dirty martini, which was not very dirty but came with 4 olives, for $4 they gave us the HH price, I got a large Sapporo $7.
We got the Salmon Asparagus Roll, very good got it last time too, the Toro Taco, which is like a low carb sushi it had a shrimp tampura, spicy tuna and some other fish wrapped in lettuce it seemed more like and appetizer and it was alright both were $8. We also got a Super Diablo Roll $16.50 its pretty good if you like your sushi fried and Americanised which I do enjoy. The service was pretty good, asked for some extra wasabi, and they brought me quite a bit in a bowl.
Ended the night with a free Happy ending, got a pic of it <a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/aP7KW2w0EmO-FMgf8w-5Gw?select=G53ngjNOVIfJlfCodtkRIw">http://www.yelp.com/biz_…</a>
Remember to print a certificate $14.50 value for us because of the 2 sake bombs $5 each and the $4.50 happy ending. Why can't really happy endings only cost $4.50?
One of my favorite places to get sushi!
Might be hard to spot, but just know it's right next to the freeway when you enter the plaza & you're set! Happy hunting! Your tummy will thank you afterwards! ;)
My boyfriend's cousin whooped us up with an appetizer sampler. Monkey balls ($8.00) is definitely something I'll order in the future. Stuffed mushrooms as an appetizer, I can't ask for more. Toro poppers ($8.00) was pretty tasty too! Their tapas are yummy, I can't wait to come back to try more.
1) Super diablo roll $16.00 - First bite, automatically became my favorite roll ever. Portion's pretty generous & it's topped w/ langostino. Can't leave this place without trying this!
2) Sexy mexi roll $11.50 - The jalapenos on here are actually spicy! So if you don't do spicy, simply remove the jalapeno since it's only placed on top! Pretty tasty, I like!
Super diablo roll is the way to go!!! ;)
I would give this place more of a 3.5 but not quite a 4.
The place is a little hard to find. Â It's in the back of a plaza hidden behind some trees, so if you have a GPS or if you know where it is prior to coming here then you won't have a problem. Â But for those of you who don't? Â It's in the same plaza as Wingnuts which is right in plain sight for those of your driving down the street looking for place!
I came here with the boyfriend and a friend and we weren't too hungry and we only really wanted to try the place and snack. Â We went ahead and got the:
Yellowtail Carpaccio - Yummmmy! Â Very decent portion for $15 and very delish
Kobe Beef Tataki - The best dish of the night! Â Lightly seared kobe beef! mmmm so good! Especially with the ponzu sauce!
Hamachi Toro Sashimi - Mmmmmm I love toro! Always been a great fan of it! Pieces were a little thick which was great. Â It was of good quality but not excellent, but definitely not bad either!
Peppersteak Salmon Roll - Pass on this! Â Not worth it. Â It was about $13 with about a little more than 10 pieces, so the portion was great, but it lacked taste. Â
The food here was good, but I think for the quality with the price isn't that great. Â It is a little overpriced for their quality. Â I wouldn't make this a common spot for me, but it was a great place to try.
Veryyyyyy California...
I don't know who owns this place, but I can probably bet that they're NOT Japanese. The menu is cute, but SOOO AMERICANIZED!! It looks like an Asian who took Spanish in high school wrote the menu. Just read it... you'll know what I'm talking about. Sorry if I give a high rating, allow me to talk crap for a second...
Then it turns into what looks like a Latin Club at night?? lol I know it's NOT officially Latin, but COME ON!! There were only 7 Asians in there including myself, which isn't bad, but ironic for a "sushi" bar. Â I'm not complaining, it's not a bad idea, but damn I wasn't ready for them to randomly start taking apart the tables around us to form a dance floor. Â That time, I was here for a birthday and I waiting for friends to come in, but they couldn't because they started carding people outside with dress code enforced. I felt pretty bad for them but oh well...
Every time I'm here, I'm with a group of friends. I've been here twice, once for a birthday (when it turned into a random ass club) and another time for lunch, which was really good. I like the monkey balls. Their sushi is different, not quality, but it doesn't suck too bad either. They're sooo lucky I like their drink menu. I'm pretty sure I'll be back there again.
