It was 1AM on a late summer's Sunday night. We had just driven in from Oklahoma City. My instinct told me to hop off of the interstate in West Little Rock to find a watering hole. Knowing nothing of Arkansas drinking laws and bar times, we made the assumption that 1:30AM would be the earliest time for last call. Our options were limited and time was tight. The first bar that we spotted was Sidetracks. There were few cars parked out front, but they at least appeared to be open.
The plan was 15 minutes of cruising Little Rock for something busier and if we found nothing, Sidetracks would be our destination. Inevitably, this would happen.
Abby ran inside while I was parking, to try and open a tab. As I entered, I couldn't help but notice the variety of literature near the entrance, catering to bears, cubs, military fetish, etc. By the time that I had found a seat, Abby had been laughing up a storm with the notorious Philip, an interior decorator whose next exotic destination would be Costa Rica.
The bartender / owner or part-owner, was dressed in denim overalls and a fur vest, which made for a lasting impression. He shared stories of how the bar is Little Rock's only Paranormal Phenomena Bar, if that can be claimed a sub-category. Haunted, yet charming, the 2-story interior more typically finds itself busy with the area's most lively clientele. On that night, we were but two of only five in the bar.
Here's the monthly event rundown:
- 1st Sunday of the Month is Potluck
- 1st Thursday of the Month We Celebrate Everyone's Birthday that was born in that Month
- 1st Friday of the Month Military Fetish and Appreciation Night
- 2nd Friday of Each Month is Bear Night!
- 3rd Friday of Each Month is Country Night
- 4th Saturday is Leather Night.
Though I'll likely never experience the thrill of any of these wild nights, I will always have fond memories of my one night at Sidetracks.
