My wife and I had one of those never forget dining experiences at the Trinity.  This place is off the charts.  The building , Old Catholic Church, is very well used as what must be Fond du Lac's best restaurant and night spot.  Our server, Angie, was so friendly and helpful.  She first guided us through the wonderful Wisconsin micr-brews then recommended a terrific beer cheese soup followed by the Friday Fish Fry.  We were treated to a very generous portion of a battered cod that was crispy and delicious .  Our dinner ended with Angie offering to lead us on the Grand Tour of Trinity.  There is a great reception room and two  upper balcony areas that are like private dining rooms.  You could see the pride and sense of ownership Angie felt as she shared her restaurant  with us.  We regret that we waited until our last night in town to visit.  The outside dining with fire pits, outside bar and live music was one of the many things that make this a Top Performer on our list of vacation stops.
Review Source:While in Fond Du Lac, we decided to check out Trinity for a late lunch/early dinner on Sunday afternoon, 5/5/2013 at about 3:45 PM. Â
Trinity is a restaurant that was created in an old Catholic church. Â It is simply a beautiful building, inside and out. Â Beautiful stained glass adorns most of the windows in the location. Â When entering the main lobby, a hostess desk that appears to be a pulpit greets visitors.
Upon our arrival, the place only had a few customers.  We saddled up to the bar and ordered a couple of drinks.  I believe there was a Happy Hour at the time (but not sure):  Grey Goose Bloody and Dewars rocks together was less than $10.00.  Shortly after arriving, our first bartender's (a friendly and informative young man) shift ended and "Cathy" started.  Although this was only her fifth day, she was informative as to questions we had on the  menu items and the church/restaurant. Â
The place was slowly but surely filling up by 4:30 and if Cathy made one Mojito in front of us, she had to make at least ten of them. (She must make 'em good, eh?)
The menu has many choices: appetizers, salads, sandwiches and full dinner entrees, including steak, chicken and pasta items that all looked wonderful on the menu.
The first bartender pointed out to us that they had a traditional stone wood burning pizza oven and said the pizzas were thin crust and great. (The oven is directly behind the bar and in open view of customers). Â We decided to order a small three-cheese pizza on the recommendation and use of the pizza oven. Â Unfortunately, it didn't stand up to our hopes or the bartender's promise: Â The crust was not thin and was undercooked...a bit doughy....absolutely no crisp or burn on the bottom of the pizza whatsoever and, for a three-cheese pizza, it lacked the cheesy depth we were expecting.
The spinach artichoke heart dip, however, did not disappoint. Â This was very good with a wonderful flavor and texture provided by the Gruyere cheese. Â Prepared, broiled and served in a shallow crock, it was probably one of the better dips of its kind that we've eaten.
Lastly, we decided to share the Cuban sandwich (Panini), which came with fries. Â This also was very good. Â Real thick slices of moist pork roast and thin slices of ham and cheese.
All-in-all, we had a great experience here. Â Regardless of our disappointment with the pizza - talking about it, we're hoping it may have been a Sunday afternoon flook and that the pizza's are usually the way described by our first bartender. Â We're definitely looking forward to coming back to try other menu items the next time we're up in Fond Du Lac.
The atmosphere for this restaurant is unique but beautiful. Â I always feel a bit odd in converted churches, but it worked here.
For lunch, we enjoyed our first Juicy Lucy burger and their chicken chili. Â The burger was just okay. Â It didn't live up to the allure of what a Juicy Lucy would taste like in my mind and the wife felt the same. Â The chili was average on my chili rating scale, didn't buzz with flavor or have any heat, buy it wasn't displeasing.
The service was similar... nothing to rave about but nothing that was unsatisfactory.
My husband stopped in Trinity on his way home from a business appointment and told me what a cool place this was. Â So, we went back the next day to check it out. Â I loved it. Â To take a beautiful old church that has been sitting empty for three years and turn it into a bar/restaurant really took some vision (and money). Â They did a great job - I loved the atmosphere with the high ceilings, chandeliers and the stained glass. Â With the addition of the bar and some nice dark woodwork, you understand that you're in a former church, however it is classy and cool, not cold and creepy like you might expect.
Service was great. Â We had an iceberg wedge salad and a wood-fired pizza. Â Both were very good. Â Next time, I'd like to try a burger - they looked pretty tasty.
I would definitely recommend Trinity to anyone in or traveling to the Fond du Lac area and I also look forward to bringing a tour group there one day - I think they would be very impressed!
I travel a lot for work. One of the great things about modern tools (i.e. the Internet and smartphones) is it lets me discover good places to dine or drink with relatively little effort. (We can thank Yelp for that.) But one of the areas that I've  overlooked most often is the cities and towns that are in my home state of Wisconsin.
There is no better example than the town of Fond du Lac, located about  an hour's drive north of Milwaukee. I've driven past Fondy hundreds, if not thousands, of times whilst driving north to family in the Fox Valley and beyond.
Yesterday, returning from an overnight business trip to Green Bay, I decided to pull off of Highway 41 and see what's cool in Fond du Lac. There must be something, right?
So I pulled into a Shopko parking lot and grabbed my smartphone. I launched the Yelp app and searched for beer, pubs and restaurants. One place quickly intrigued me: Trinity. So I plugged in Trinity's coordinates into Google Maps and I journeyed east towards downtown where I was to be on the lookout for a church that was a pub ... or a pub that was a church ... or something like that.
Sure 'nuf. I found it and what a grand church it was! Walking through a set of double doors, when my eyes adjusted to the darkened room I gasped aloud, "Wow." This was an AMAZING place. I quickly texted my wife and said, "You've gotta see this place I've discovered in Fondy. It's awesome!"
I had a beer, two actually, before heading for home. This morning, my wife and I discussed what to do with our day off together. It was easy for me to agree with her suggestion that we take a drive out of the city and meander towards Fond du Lac.
An hour and a half later we arrived at Trinity. I had probably told her too much about the place, so maybe after hearing all of my superlatives, she would be disappointed. She wasn't. In fact, I think she muttered a "Wow" too once she walked through the double door entryway.
We shared an iceberg wedge salad. It was very good and fresh with bleu cheese dressing, tomatoes and lots of crispy bacon bits. We followed it with one of their wood-fired oven pizzas: the Tuscan Trio loaded with ham, capicola and pepperoni. It, too, was delicious.
We didn't try their burgers, but a table near us ordered a bunch and they looked awesome. By looks alone, they appeared to be as tasty as any served by one of Milwaukee's best hamburger slingers.
I can't tell you a lot more about Fond du Lac, but I can tell you this: the next time you're just driving past, if you can spare the time, a short trip into downtown for a visit to Trinity is definitely worth your effort.
I have been here about half a dozen times since it opened up. One of the biggest attractions to Trinity has to be the atmosphere. Beautiful building to spend some time in. As far as service is concerned I have a experienced a full spectrum here. Some servers have wowed me, some have left me wondering why they chose this particular field. Bar service has always been great; quick, consistent, and friendly. Food has also been fairly consistent and satisfying. The one thing I can't comment on is the wood fired pizza they prominently market, as I've never tried it. Overall, nice addition to the dinner options in Fond Du Lac.
Review Source:We went for supper on a Friday night about 6:30, they were out of cod so we ordered the perch, that was the only thing good about our night! The soup was cold, fettuccine noodles were undercooked, the chicken potpie had 3 very small pieces of chicken although it wasn't lacking in peas and onion or rosemary, and my husband likes his burgers medium rare, I'm surprised his burger didn't walk off the table! It was very rare and cold. We will not be back! Some serious changes need to be made in that kitchen!
The only reason they got two stars was because the staff was so friendly.
Renovated church gives this restaurant beautiful ambiance. Nice cozy seating choices indoors, with areas for larger parties. Wonderful outdoor patio with a seating area around a fire pit. Food choices are casual, tasty, and we experienced top notch service. Friendly bartending staff who displayed their mixology skills by making chocolate martinis that were amazingly good. Oh, and when I order an old fashioned, I know it will be made from scratch.
Review Source:Avoid this place! Server brought the wrong beers and when we tried to order the parmesan fries for an appetizer, we were told they were out of fries! Who is out of fries at 5:30 on a sunday? Ordered a 12 pizza, and it was a 9 inch personal pizza, we left and went to Joes Fox hut and ordered a real 12 inch pizza with flavor. We will not be back!!!
