Love Triple Crown! While in college at Texas State, I discovered & became a regular here.  I recently moved to Kyle & am now re-discovering this gem of a dive bar. Located off the beaten path from the (fraternity ridden) courthouse square, Triple Crown has Cheap drink specials & friendly bartenders who still know your name. The theme screams "dive bar" but in a good way, & Triple Crown was formerly a massage parlour proudly displaying the former sign in the back behind the pool tables. The big  covered patio outside is very nice & a welcoming destination from the smoke-filled inside during busy nights (San Marcos still allows smoking in bars/restaurants).
Triple Crown boasts themselves as being the "live music capitol of San Marcos" with live music almost nightly & a rather entertaining Open Mic night on sundays featuring Steve n Steve amongst other local talent.
The other live acts are hit & miss, & alot of local talent play or have played shows here. Be prepared to pay a cover charge during a live show (cover charges vary depending on the venue).
So whether you live close to or far from San Marcos, it's well worth checking out Triple Crown!
I've come here for music before and it's been average. However, I went this weekend and they almost wouldn't let my friend in because her ID looked fake..she's 22. She showed them her military ID and was STILL getting a rough time about it. They wouldn't let me in because I had a paper ID that said I was 20..not trying to drink just trying to see our friends play. THEN, they wouldn't let my friend close out her own tab? Which doesn't even make sense..I mean, what the hell? I've also had friends get kicked out here for bullshit reasons. Vibe is bad..not coming back here.
Review Source:Came down to see Scott Biram play a show with a lady friend that lives in town. Â I think this is the Texas that I was looking for four years ago when I moved here. Â Excellent atmosphere and overall vibe. Â Drink prices were quite steep for a dive and I left smelling like the bottom of an overflowing ashtray. Â That being said, as long as they invite Scott Biram back, I'll be back.
Review Source:Well, this is where I can find all of my friends. I don't frequent as much as I used to but it is home when it's time for happy hour.
They have really a great special on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday night...$2 anything.
My favorite time is Saturday and Sunday afternoons when it's quiet.
Not only is this place the best live music venue in San Marcos but it's one of the best live music venues I've ever been to. I've played in two different bands that have performed at The Triple Crown and both bands had outstanding shows there. The staff was always extremely friendly and the drink prices can't be beat. They don't need drink specials because they are already extremely affordable. The ambience of the bar itself is incredibly down to earth. There are no pretentious hipsters here. If your a fan of live music and you find yourself in San Marcos, come to this bar!!!!!!
Review Source:Live music  365 nights a year... no I'm not kidding!!!! The cover is never been more than 8 bucks for any show that i've been to here yet so were talking cheap . The drinks are cheap too so if you want a fun inexpensive night with good music this is the place to be. However it is a really small venue that fills up quick if a local band is playing so come early for the shows so that you have a place to stand because there is practically no where to sit inside expect at the bar and a patio outside. VERY smoky as well , but other than that I would recommend it for a show anytime.
Review Source:The band was ok the last two songs were the only ones we liked. We tried to come back another night but the bands were only punk bands so we passed. If you smoke a pack an hour then its the place for you. The place was crowded and the out door wasnt much better. there is the loop on the hook game which takes up a lot of room.
Review Source:After stumbling about the square looking at the faux clubs that played jock rock and current rap, and charged 2.50 for a bottle of budwiser, I decided to trek off the beaten path and.. blah blah blah.
Smoky, not a lot of sitting room, great service, cheap drinks, and kitschy decor make this a killer place to spend a night. Everything a rock and roll venue should be.
If it weren't for the usual $5 cover on the weekends (which is completely understandable because, as I've been told, all door-profits go directly to the bands) I would be here every night Th-Sat. Cheap drinks, cheap pool, good people.. this is what it's all about.
I forgot my keys here one night and ever since then I've earned the nickname "Key-Guy" from the regular bartenders.
The music is always solid. In fact, I'll go ahead and say that the Triple Crown is hands down the best bar for live music in San Marcos; they feature nightly bands not only from SM, but from Austin and San Antonio too.
Also, additional Kudos for being the only bar in SM (that I know of, that is) that keeps Big Bark brew on tap.
Hole in the wall bar with great vibe and good music.
Inside the bar it's smokey, it's tiny, and I wouldn't walk barefoot in it, but that's what I love about this bar. The beer is cheap and they pour heavy. There's a nice deck for those who want a little more space. The live music is usually good and you get a wide variety of local bands. Best part is any day of the week you can go see live music.
