The food is really good and the waiters are friendly. Thursday comedy night was excellent. And there's a pool, which is interesting...

But the smokers outside really ruin this place. They let smokers out on the back porch, and tend to leave the door open on nice days, which wafts the smoke straight through the whole restaurant. It's like a dining experience from the 90's. The ashtray smell really kills my appetite. Is this even legal? Don't you have to be 20 feet away from the building to smoke at a restaurant or something like that?

This restaurant should be a 5, but it's a 3. Management, please take care of your smoking problem!

This place has changed ownership many times in the past 10 yrs. and the current owners are the best yet. Good menu with great prices. Great burgers! Good bar and they really know how to mix great tasteing drinks. The pool is always clean and fun and one of the few pools left that lets you use the diving board. Live poolside music on weekends during the Summer and I had a great time there on the 4th of July. Fun family atmosphere. These  owners know how to run the show!

If you are looking for fun entertainment, a pool and good food and drinks. This place is it. A hidden Gem off the beaten path! has lots of history and great owners!
Most of the shows are cover charge free and they are starting to do comedy.
I also heard somewhere they are offering poolside massage. LOL

We had lunch here today, and their food and service was really good. My favorite dish was their buffalo chicken strips. It was really Delicious. If I am in the area I will definitely visit again!

So.... I had an emergency root canal today. It SUCKED! I wanted comfort food, but couldn't chew much. I looked on facebook & the Trout Farm was having a crazy $5 specials deal. $5 for Angus Sirloin with mashed potatoes & veggie, $5 for a pork loin , $5 for a burger & fries AND $5 for the most incredible mac n cheese you will ever have! I, of course, ordered the mac n cheese as my tooth was still throbbing from the surgery. We expected a smaller portion since the price was so low, but NOOOOO...it was a huge dish of creamy white goodness. I swear, this has got to be the best mac n cheese in the world!!! My daughter & I each ordered it because we were thinking the portions would be too small to share, but we both ended up taking a lot home. I absolutely LOVE this place. The server was bubbly & cheerful and it was obvious she was having fun. The owner stopped & chatted at our table and they made us feel like regulars even though we haven't been there all that often. This place is such a gem that I hate to share it, but these are good people putting out GREAT food. Give them a try. You won't be disappointed.

We had a great time here for lunch last Saturday. We arrived near opening time and although the place was empty, it was warm and welcoming. Yvonne greeted us (she is so sweet!) and got our beverages while we waited for the rest of our party. We walked out to the back patio to look at the pond and saw some interesting birds (King fishers?). The creek running behind the place is nice to watch for a bit also. It is winter so the pool was not open, it had just rained so everything was full and if it hadn't been so cold I would have taken a swim!
For lunch I had a burger with cheddar and a side salad. I recommend the homemade bleu cheese dressing -- delicious! Next time I will have that instead of cheddar on my burger :)
Others had the BLT and breakfast. Everyone enjoyed their food and polished off the plates!
It may have been a bit hard to find (I'm from out of town) but I was told to look for the green awning. Parking seems limited, small lot and the street.

OK I honestly should not be telling anyone about this hidden gem in the Santa Cruz mountains since I want it all to myself but here it goes: upon reading Stephanie S.'s review my family and I decided to take a little trip to check out the Trout Farm one Saturday morning.
Well ... we have been coming back every Saturday since! I have even programmed in my iPhone calendar "breakfast at Trout Farm" for every Saturday morning.
As soon as we walk in they know our drink order and start preparing it before we even sit down (Me - Bloody Mary with Kettle One Vodka; SO - IPA beer; The Kid - lemonade)
Service is beyond impeccable! Service is truly amazing! Those two ladies are so nice and able to accommodate my family's ever changing needs.
The food is fresh, delicious and reasonably priced. The servings are plentiful and we always end up taking the leftovers home. Burgers, omelets, the Mac and Cheese and the skirt steak dishes are really great and our favorites!
Not a fancy schmancy place but then again I am not interested in what is on the outside: I care about what is on the inside like the food and the service.

I went on a date and after dinner he suggested going to The Trout Farm for a drink.  That was when I first met Amanda (Bartender, Server, and now a very good friend).  She was very nice and talkative.  She mentioned that they had karaoke on Thursday nights.  I was so excited, I love karaoke!  I had just moved to the area so it was nice to know of something close that I could be a part of.  That was the beginning of my many amazing times at The Trout Farm.  I would go every Thursday.  The staff became family and the food is amazing!  I always have a great time there.  I highly suggest checking them out.  YUM & FUN!  Thank you Trout Farm!

(Karaoke is now every Friday from 8-12am :D

We live near here, so we really want this place to be good. It changes ownership more often than I change my underwear, so keep that in mind when you read older reviews. Past dining experiences have been hilariously bad. I am developing Post Trout Farm Stress Disorder for all the bad food and bad service we have encountered over the years. Today we braved it for breakfast because people seem excited about the newest batch of owners.

It is true that the woman waiting our table was nice (perhaps she is an owner, not sure). The "new" decor is the same dark decor as before. Same chairs with rips in the seats. I think they moved a wall between the bar and restaurant area which is great if you are there to see a band, but not so great if you want to take the kids out to dinner. The view is nice. On a sunny morning, one gets the sense that you are inside a dark, drab cave looking out.

How is it that there have been regulations in place for 20 years against smoking indoors, but this place still has that stale cigarette smell? I want my restaurant to smell like yummy food, not old beer and cigs. Owners, if you are smoking in here after hours, I suggest that you reconsider.

We went for breakfast, but they were out of some key breakfast ingredients. The staff seems exhausted from the night before. The general vibe was that they were scrambling to pull themselves together. They were out of any kind of black tea. I can't drink coffee, so tea is my go-to drink for the morning. I love a restaurant that has a great selection of tea. You can always tell when there is a tea drinker on staff, because the selection is good - not some nasty multi pack where all the good stuff has been picked out, leaving only the lemon medley or some other tutti-frutti nonsense. Sadly, TFI completely failed the tea test. Put your coffee-drinking selves in my shoes. Would you go out for breakfast at a place that had no coffee?

With all that said, the food was actually good. It didn't have all the ingredients I had hoped for, but it tasted good and the portion was large (as it should be for the prices they charge). It wasn't organic or locally grown (unless by local you mean the nearest Safeway), but I enjoyed my food. So, the jury is still out on these new owners. I suppose we will have to try the place for dinner and see how they do.

I hope they step up their game a little, because we love to eat out, and we would be here all the time if it was awesome.

I love finding hidden gems like this. My friend told me that this place is famous for their burgers. I wasn't even in the mood, but obviously I had to try one. I went for Chef Aaron's Favorite which comes with Oaxacan mole, diced chili peppers and queso fresco (though they were out on this day and subbed jack which was great). This is one of the best burgers I've ever had. I love how they are all cooked to medium well. I appreciate when a place just knows how to do it right. The grass fed patty imparts copious amounts of juiciness and flavor. The unusual toppings made this a sophisticated meal where each component shined on its own.

Any burger connoisseur knows how essential a perfect bun is to the whole equation. Trout Farm uses a fresh, dreamy kaiser roll just like it should be. I was also very happy to order the fries which are also among the best I've ever had. Cooked just the way you want them and with amazing seasoning, I ate as many as I could. When fries are this good, it's well warranted to charge an a la carte price. We were served by one of the owners, Yvonne, who was very attentive and really seems to "get it." We enjoyed conversing with her. I don't live nearby but I am definitely glad to have this place on my radar and look forward to returning soon.

I hate to write a not so good review here, esp since we have had good service before, but we came last weekend on Saturday evening for dinner. Been here a few times since new ownership last year took over- those times were good except for this one.

First we sat behind the wall, for a few minutes, nobody came to notice, so we sat near the window so at least the barkeep would see us. Mind you there were no waitress this evening, strange, only the bar lady. about 8pm ish. There was a table of about 8 people near us and another table with about 3, and another outside. STILL, with the visibility no employees saw us sitting there. I finally went up to the lady with dark hair at bar and asked for menus. We were starving. She said she would bring them to us. So she did, my guy wanted wine, which I followed in suit, the wine was not good at all some Cab from up north- Russian River I believe (she said it was local but it was not- local to me is right here in the mtns) It had an after taste major acidity or something, I didn't even finish mine. The first sip to try it out was ok, but after wow!! terrible The waitress/barkeep seemed so scattered and not completely with it that night. it did take her a little bit to take our order. Wasn't a whole lot of people in there either. Just a few tables is all.

The food- good portions and always good, but I noticed there were hardly any veggies on our plates. He had a steak with potatoes and that was all on the plate. I had Chicken with tequila dressing over rice, but I had 4 small broccolettes on my plate so I gave him 2 of mine. I could of sworn the menu said veggies with my meal. I believe the bar lady said it did, but wasn't hardly any on there. Even though my guy is not a veggie eater like I am, it still wasn't a balanced plate on with of ours.

Since we are limited on food choices here in the mtns, we will probably try it again, and hope for better service. Not sure what happened that night and on a Saturday night at that.

Kudos to the new owners Yvonne and Lee for turning this jewel of Felton into what it is today...Awesome to see 'the Farm' restored so beautifully!   The pool area looks great, the food is better than ever and all that tacky decor from bygone era is gone.  Also, the trout have returned: Trout Farm Inn is back on track to actual trout fishing!
I had lunch here today.  As always, food was delicious, service quick and all the colorful locals were there along with a couple of friends I bumped into from yoga class...people in Cruz drive up to TFI, it is that fun!  Good Music, fun crowd and gorgeous forest creek scene.  Yes, the prices are what some may say a tad high, but the quality of food is precisely why: it's Good!  Fresh fish, lean meat, non greasy onion rings kind of quality.  Did I mention the service is great?  Yvonne, that was one helluva burger!

PS:  Wish Mac could have seen this happen.  He loved the Trout Farm Inn, and we All Miss Mac.

A place where everybody knows your name! Love going there with the family . The owners Yvonne and Kelly are wonderful people their daughters and  staff are great  and, the food is outstanding! Night life at the TF is a blast, Thursday nights are  locals night with the BEST pork chops and mash potatoes around  (just ask my husband :), and at a great price. I will never have to cook dinner on Thursday night again and its karaoke night.
    You won't be disappointed!

Took our granddaughter to swim at the pool for an hour. Such an awesome little pool, she had a great time. Placed a small lunch order just so we wouldn't be mooching a table while we watched her. Our Draft local beer - $6. each - seemed a little bit high, but we do support local brewers whenever possible so no worries. Service wasn't particularly fast but the speed wasn't the issue this time.

I was served the wrong sandwich but as I didn't know what it was supposed to look like  I didn't really think too much about it - I was just grateful to finally get our order. My granddaughter's mac and cheese (5.95 ala carte with nary a garnish of cherry tomato or parsley to perk up the bowl of beige) came at the same time, while we waited for the side order of fries (2.25).

I cut the sandwich in half to share with my husband, nibbled a piece of avocado, when a server (not ours) swooped in and grabbed it out from under my nose and said, sorry wrong sandwich and dashed off to serve it. I was speechless for a moment and managed to mumble to my server who had just brought the  fries that she probably shouldn't serve it as I had handled it and he ran after her. Oops.

We did get the correct sandwich (Chicken and Bacon Ranch at 8.95 ala carte) and the bun was completely burned black on the bottom and the grilled (previously frozen) chicken breast had that grey scum on top from steam/grilling. Truly unappetizing. I would never have served that bun or the chicken.

Fries (that don't come with the sandwich that cost almost 9.) were typical coated crunchy fries out of a bag you get at any tourist trap.

Mac and Cheese, well there was a lot of white cheese melted all over the top and there was macaroni. Didn't detect bechamel or other seasonings and between the kidlet and hubby, plus a nibble by me, only half was eaten so it wasn't exactly jump in my mouth worthy and we are all mac and cheese freaks. Suggestion: half the amount of mac and cheese and add a little veggie side. Parents will love you for it!

I know, we really didn't order enough to be all judgey, but really, if you can mess up something as simple as a grilled chicken sandwich I don't hold much hope for the other dishes.

The folks there couldn't be nicer but they are so clearly in over their heads with the food. At the prices they charge it could be a lot more fresh and offer more home made options instead of the usual snack bar at a bowling alley type fare.  Even the breakfast plates cruising by had those nasty hash brown patties you get in bulk from Sysco. Come on, grits and home fries are easy!

ps. To the crew at TFI...the rose petals on the floor were sweet in celebration of your birthday but VERY dangerous when they get crushed and slippery. For the sake of your insurance premiums please don't do that again. ;)

This is the place to go in the Summer when its foggy in the Cruz. I heard good things about this place and wanted to catch some rays by the pool side. We wandered into the restaurant and ordered up some food and drinks! Yummy burger with avocado and cheese was super messy the way I like it. Good onion rings too. The pool area had a blues band that was rocking the patio so we went over there and didn't realize we had to pay an admission fee for the pool. No worries at $7 each. Lots of kids and parents being kids. All the staff were super nice.

If you want a charbroiled burger that tastes better than any grilled burger at a reasonable price, this is the place to go. My wife and I feel they make the best burgers anywhere. Period.  If you're a burger fan (and who isn't), you won't be disappointed.
The decor isn't fancy (looks a little worn), but you get a nice view of the woods in the back and can sit on the patio when it's warm..

We enjoyed a great brunch here on a rainy Saturday afternoon.  The restaurant is very cozy and what you woud expect for the Santa Cruz Mountains.  The food was great, the staff was incredibly friendly, and we will be regulars.  There were five of us and we all loved it.  We are thrilled to have the Trout Farm so close to our home.

Pretty good, I had the veggie burger some french fries and a santa cruz oatmeal stout Was going to order the salmon, but it's farm raised, lost a star for that. I used to go swimming here a bunch when I was a kid so the place brought up a lot of fond memories, the food I feel this time around unfortunately won't do the same. Not to rip on them, I've been there some over the years and I think they've definitely made some improvements. The salad was good, though I just didn't get that fresh feeling with the meals overall.  But if you're in the valley and don't want to venture out to SC, give it a whirl, you may have a less strict view of the joint.

Pleasantly Surprised! I had been to the Trout Farm Inn before the ownership changed, and had never considered coming back. Since the change in ownership, I have been back twice! The family is super friendly and fun to chat with, and the atmosphere has completely changed. The restaurant is clean, the menu is fresh, and the events are fun and family friendly! I enjoy visiting this venue so much now. I'm so thankful that they ownership has changed and they have tried so hard to keep it a family friendly environment!

First off, this Yelp review site is not too fair for this business, as it was taken over in the last year and REALLY cleaned up.  All the old (and bad) reviews are before that.  I have gone in a couple times recently, and had excellent experiences.

Staff:  All family, and really kind.  Warm and welcoming.  You get a SMILE as soon as you walk in, until you leave.  All the ladies that work the bar are sisters and look clean, which is really important in high-end dining.  They know their beers and wines, they can talk knowledgably about it.

Food: I am a salad eater, so I am not reviewing other offerings. But the two salads I had were wonderfully fresh.  The veggies were crisp and clean, thoughtfully arranged on the plate.  Dressings were good and cold.

Wine:  I do like my wine, and they had nice stuff.  The times I went in, there were different local options which was a treat.

Venue:  Nicely updated, warm, clean.  Big TV above bar with sports.  Best mix of music playing I have ever had in a restaurant.

These people are in it to win.  I cannot say enough nice things and I look forward to each visit.

My first visit to the Trout Farm Inn was a most fascinating experience.  The place feels like a hunting lodge of yesteryear complete with the mounted head of a buck.  The ambiance was warm and inviting.  Where I was seated I had a view of the pool and the beautiful wooded surroundings.

The staff was very friendly and I was served promptly.

I ordered the Black Bean Veggie Patty: Grilled and served on a ciabatta roll with lettuce and tomatoes with added swiss cheese.  The patty was surprising tasty with just the right amount of spices; the lettuce and tomatoes were crisp and fresh, the fancy herb ciabatta roll flavor was bit over powering and the texture dry.  Note to self: next time order it on a toasted bun.  I also ordered french frys, which were served with just the right amount of salt and pepper.

I heard from a friend they have Karaoke on Thursday nights!

Overall my experience was very good, and I could imagine it would be fun to visit this place on a Friday night.  If you find yourself in the area, maybe visiting Loch Lomond, do yourself a favor and drop in at the neo-rustic Trout Farm Inn.

Whatever you THOUGHT you knew about the Trout Farm, forget it.  The pool and nostalgia of the location is still there...but everything here now is bettern than any other owner has accomplished in these last many years of the establishment changing hands.

Food = delicious and affordable (especially locals' night deals)
Location = can't get better - feels like vacation but not too far away
Owners/staff = awesome, friendly, really wanna make you feel welcome
Ambiance = comfortable yet well served
    Pool = pristine and fun

This place is cleaned and spruced upnicely, complete with a totally new positive attitude and happy family-friendly vibe.  You MUST try the salmon and rice pilaf dinner (perfection), and being from Buffalo I feel totally qualified to tell you that you won't find better Buffalo wings in California.

Now, some things are better left to what people are used to -- so of course there's still a friendly full bar, happy hour specials, and Monday Night football specials too.  The bar also has upgraded drink choices and great local wines.  And music...yep, still there, and better than ever!   Watch for the evolving musical line up...it's changing while the new owners figure out what the local (and visiting) crowd wants to see.     Singer songwriter showcases during the week, great bands on the weekend, and of course the staple of karaoke for the Thursday night crowd.  All are done with great sound and room to dance.

Shedding the old stigmas of whatever this has been in the past will take word of mouth, so pass it around, you MUST rediscover the Trout Farm Inn!!

(Halloween and New Year's Eve shin-digs at this place were a BLAST!!!!!!!).  Talk about a fun vibe....wooo and HOOOOOO!  :)    Can't wait to see what this summer brings at the Trout Farm!

I should note that the Trout Farm Inn is under new ownership since June 2011.  Any review before then (bad or good) is not relevant to the current Trout Farm Inn. It has changed.

It still has swimming available at the pool during summer, it still has live music, and still at the same location.

The wine list is now all local wines and the menu has changed a bit. This time, I tried the chicken sandwich and my friend tried the buffalo chicken wings. She said they are the best she has ever tasted. They serve it with carrots and celery. I tried the chicken sandwich and it was a pleasant surprise. There was so much food in the sandwich, it was a challenge to keep it in the bun. All the sandwiches come with a spear pickle and fries are optional. The fries are spicy.

On the full dinners, I have only tried the tri-tip with mashed potatoes with gravy; and buttery carrots. It is as good as it sounds.

Previously I have tried some of the different variety of burgers. They are larger than what I find elsewhere and this is now my favorite place for a burger.  During the summer --day time-- there is a snack shack near the swimming pool area. You can get burgers, hot dogs and fries there. The burgers at the snack shack are smaller and less expensive.

The crew is friendly, the entertainment is fun and as long as the food is as good as it is, I shall return.

    December, 2012

This is an update for the Trout Farm Restaurant (review of pool and pool area is he same- excellent)

The writing below the line is my review for the restaurant BEFORE ownership change. Presently, this lovely place has designed a restaurant that the entire community can enjoy. It is a casual place that serves the BEST HAMBURGER that I have ever tasted! The quality of the meat reminds me of the type of burgers Mom made at home in the 1950's, so flavorful and robust!

I was very happy to discover that the place had come around to the type of establishment I had hoped it would become. Non-pretentious, casual, inexpensive, and all with a beautiful view out the window, of the creek, pond and redwoods.

My husband enjoys trying the main entree items, and both times we have been there recently, he has had heavier meat dishes, that he's raved about. I have tasted and have to agree; they have hit the ball out of the park with their new kitchen and bar.

The service is incredible. Both times there, we had the owner stroll through the dining room asking tables how they were enjoying their food. The wait staff is downright charming. one couldn't hope for more engaging, helpful attention.

They have a lot of live music in the bar (the front door opens directly onto the bar, through which one must walk to get to the long, skinny dining room to the back-right), and the atmosphere seems appealing to all types of people. The fact that it is built on a creek (smokers have a lovely view of the creek, pond, and redwoods from the deck!)

Below is the old review menu:

    ____________________________________________________
    ____________________________________________________

Beautiful, beautiful place. Huge pool -- and baby pool, also --harkening to country club days, generous deck and rest / changing rooms surrounded by oak trees and bordered by a babbling creek...

To go to the pool and loll around all day promises a wonderful day spent in a lovely place. It's big enough and far enough from the bar to be a great activity -- with kids, too. I definitely recommend Trout Farm for this wonderful activity.

Just avoid hoping the restaurant food might be good -- I have attempted to eat there a few times and it's never been decent, and it's always been expensive. I also believe that if you're going to enjoy the pool & grounds, you must buy the food offered there (hot dogs, hamburgers), and are not allowed to bring any of your own in with you. One can always sneak things in within a big bag.

Unfortunately, I imagine that this place makes its money from the bar. Nightly, there are many cars filling the parking lot at happy hour, and teetering people come and go.

Always different owners, or so it seems, mediocre food at inflated prices, Trout Farm is never known for its great cuisine, nor bargains.

However, should you want to go to a place that pours out drunken partiers, it's for you.

Recently,  a local was there, with his baby (so appropriate). He left. drunk out of his mind. He drove his truck speedily and head-on into a man -- the sole breadwinner for his family -- coming down the hill with his wife. Killed him. The criminal got out of his truck, with the baby, and on looking at the scene, said, "Wow," walked back to his truck, and drove away. The wife sat with her dying and pinned-in husband without help.

When I think about Trout Farm, I think about this kind of drinking, and wonder when the next accident will be.

This place is a unique & awesome adventure!
We came here with eleven hungry people after an excellent hike in Quail Hollow. It was a gorgeous evening and we asked if we could sit out on the deck. They were wonderfully accommodating. -- We ordered drinks and quite a wide range of good food. (very large portions too!) There was a cool Reggae band playing, and we stayed to dance & play pool the rest of the night. What a delight!
If you go during the day, you can swim in the pool for a small fee.
Maybe sometime soon they will be able to upgrade the bridge to the trout pond where folks used to fish for their supper!
    Karaoke on Saturday nights!

We recently moved to the area and were in desperate need of good, local, and inexpensive dining.  I`m happy to report that we found two of those three at Trout Farm Inn.  Our waitress was very friendly and attentive, even taking some time out of her busy shift to fill us in on the history of the place.  The outdoor pool (full-size, open to the public for $5, and staffed by a lifeguard) was a unique addition to an otherwise fairly typical burger establishment.

The menu left a lot to be desired, unless you like "fries with that".  It's a step above Denny's, but with a very sparse menu.  I figured that at a place with "Trout" in the name, that we would be getting some fantastic local seafood, but alas, the only fish on the menu was dipped in batter, deep fried and served with, yes, fries.

The beer selection was equally sparse, so if any of you are micro-brew, local brew, (or anything not out of AH, or Coors) fanatics, it would be best to order the Fat Tire on tap and not ask for the drink menu.

The interesting thing about this place is its potential.  They need LOTS of local brews, organic produce for salads and appetizers, and WAY less fried foods.  The location, and views are great -- under the new owners we may have yet to see what they can do.  And please pull the ketchup off the tables.  :)

No trout, No farm, No inn.  They have a new chef, but he wasn't there that night.  The menu looked like it would appeal to the Lompico crowd, but many of the things that were on the menu weren't available because of a sub cook.

I can't recommend the place (at least indoors) for kids.  There is inadequate separation between the bar/pool table area and the dining room.  There were unemptied ashtrays outside on the deck.  The deck has a lovely view unless you look over the deck to see beer bottles, cups, napkins littering the Zyante creek watershed.

The place smelled like a combination of dirty mop water and stale cigarettes.

Out order was wrong, wrong, wrong. . . . to the point where we had to laugh.  We had to ask for our check and hunt down someone to take our money.  It's been there since 1947, but it seemed like it was the first day of brand new establishment.

Locals love the swimming pool, burgers and dogs . . . and maybe on a hot summer days we'll give it another try.  Or a Friday night when the regular (new) chef is working.

Psst!  Owners!  Want a hint.  Hire a good Gay decorator, cuz the place is looking sad.  Christmas tinsel, plastic ivy and Christmas lights does not equal decor.

I love this place all year round. The group of people working and regulars are fabulous!!! They have certain nights for karaoke and other fun activities. Summer time though is by far the funnest since they open up the pool and everyone of all ages are jumping in.

The best dish here in my opinion is the calamari the sauce you dip it well there are no words to describe this heavenly taste. I love this bar

So you only know about this place for two reasons really, its on the way to Loch Lomond or you live in Lompico/ Felton.

I found the food to be a bit pricey for where the place was located (middle of no where) but in fact did find that my dinner was rather tasty.  It wasn't the best food I've tasted but the seasoning was good and the sauce on my chicken dish was perfect.  The wine list was ok and pretty reasonable.

Though out waitress was sooo young, wearing converse and couldn't recommend foor nor liqour, she was sweet though without knowledge.

It was a surprising visit to a place I said I would always go to while living in Lompico for a year.

If you go, you might feel the same way, or love it!  Great locals place and they have events though I've never gone to any.

When life hands you lemons, make lemonade. Who the fuck ever came up with that saying anyway? Well, I like my lemonade with a healthy  splash of Jack Daniels, and luckily that's how Roseanne at the Trout Farm Inn makes 'em.

I wanted to go for a hike at Loch Lomond. So we get all the way up there, ignoring the signs along the way saying it was closed for the season. Season?? This IS California, right? How can you close hiking trails? Well, they did. There was nowhere to park. We couldn't hop the fence. So we started to head back.

And that's when we saw this place - and the sign. "Fresh Seafood, Cocktails, Fishing, Swimming Pool". All on the side of the road in a tiny town. Heaven, for me. We walk in and are greeted by Roseanne. I told her we wanted to sit outside by the pool and she said fine, but there was no waitstaff, so we'd have to order from her and she'd bring it out when she had a chance. No problem. We ended up sitting on the back deck instead and Roseanne waited on us.

It feels like you're in another world back here - it's kind of reminiscent of The Bayou with Spanish moss hanging down from the trees, the creek running out back and the fishing hole. We got oysters - fresh, delicious, served with a perfect cocktail sauce. And then the three of us split a perfectly cooked charbroiled lobster tail as well as trout almondine, which was very fresh. The sauteed vegetables that were served with each dish were perfect too. I didn't eat any of the french fries, but my friends enjoyed them. The mashed potatoes were really good too - I like them lumpy and these fit the bill. The salads that we got were also really fresh. The dressing choices are limited, but it's so fresh that you really don't even care. The waitress came on duty about half way through our meal and her service was nowhere near as good as Roseanne's, but she was competent enough.

Sunday is the big day at the Trout Farm Inn, apparently. They have karaoke from 4-8. These people do not fuck around, I'll tell you that much for free. Some of the best renditions of Roberta Flack, Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline, Roy Orbison and Kenny Rogers songs can be heard at this bar's karaoke night. And the people in here are real characters - very welcoming, very helpful, and very interesting. My favorite was S.O.B. - Sweet Old Bob. Sweet Old Bob has the voice of an angel and I complimented him after he sang. He asked if I was going to sing and I said no, my singing sounds like cats dying in a blender. And the following conversation ensued:

SOB: Do you sing in the car?
    ME: Sure
SOB: Do you sing in the shower?
    ME: Yeah
SOB: So get up there and pretend you're in the shower and take your clothes off. I promise I'll clap.
ME: I bet you would, Bob!

I fucking love this place and all the people in there. You probably won't find many reasons to make your way out there, but if you do, you won't be sorry.
