First of all, our waitress was rude right off the bat when my friend ordered a drink and tried to show her his ID because it was a temporary paper one. She immediately stated "I can't take that!" in a pretty rude tone. I was surprised though that she then brought it to the back to show someone else. But she came out stating it was unacceptable. I understand it's a temporary piece of paper and not a laminated ID card, but it is issued by the state, and you have no choice but to use that when they take away your old license! Aside from all that, we've been legal to drink for oh, um, 10 years. And we haven't had that problem in any other place. The food was not good anyway. He ordered a burger, medium, and it came out tasting like charcoal, despite being slightly pink inside. My soup was gross. And the soda we were told was "coke" was clearly just a generic cola, and flat on top of that. Awful awful awful.
Review Source:We've been coming here during trips to the mountains for more than ten years, so I'm disappointed to have to downgrade my rating. The service is still good -- at least when it's not overcrowded -- and the atmosphere is pleasant, particularly the patio seating during the summer. Unfortunately, the food has been mediocre the last two times. I've had salmon and baked haddock, my wife a vegetable stir fry. It's been ok, but at this point there are simply better options around.
Review Source:Ok, I am from Massachusetts and was recently vacationing in NH and we decided to give Truant's a try based on some recommendations from friends. Â I am glad that we did! Â We arrived earlier in the evening, so we were fortunate enough to be seated right away.
We had some steamers as an app and they were excellent, then I had a full rack of ribs and they were falling off the bone and very meaty.
This definitely a pub style restaurant and great for the whole family, we will be visiting again when we are back in NH.
The best thing about Truants was the warm, homey atmosphere. This coupled with our very pleasant waitress made us feel very welcome, almost like we were dining at a friends home. The place has a very eclectic layout but it works.
The food was passable, nothing to go crazy about. We ordered the sampler appetizer of wings, fried mozzarella, onion rings and potato skins. Sadly none was homemade, I would have hoped that they could made something fresh rather than just dropping it frozen into a deep fryer.
My wife ordered the panko crusted haddock, which she wasn't crazy about but again it wasn't terrible either, just nothing to get excited about. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger medium rare which showed up closer to medium. Still it was passable but didn't knock my socks off. My son ordered the kids ziti marinara with a meatball and he liked it. It seemed ok to me.
They had a wonderful selection of craft beers, two of which I tried; a blueberry that was good and a banana which was quite nice. I was shocked as this was the first time I had heard of a banana flavored beer. Then again I'm not as knowledgable about craft beers so maybe this is more common than I'm aware.
All in all not too bad, but apart from the ambience nothing struck me as exceptional, perhaps I would try it again if I were in the area, but would have something other than the burger and app sampler.
I'd give this place 3.5 stars if it were possible. Â We stopped here right when they opened for lunch on our way home from our vacation. Â Woodstock is an adorable little town with a big parking area behind the restaurant. Â We went inside but ultimately sat outside on their patio which overlooks the parking lot. I was glad about this as the interior of the bar, which was in the basement area, had a strange mildewey smell that didn't exactly make me hungry. Â When we first arrived, it took a few minutes to be noticed but our waitress was very friendly and helpful once she saw us. Â She sat us outside where they were blaring classic rock songs on speakers that were well past their prime, resulting in distorted sounds more than music eminating from them while we ate. Â Fortunately, she turned it down without us having to ask.
Their menu has a cute academia theme. Â We ordered garden salads to start, which were pretty standard fare. Â For my meal, I ordered a black bean veggie burger and fries. Â My burger was decent, although nothing to write home about in terms of flavor or inventiveness. Â It was satisfying though and came with a delicious chipotle mayo that I dunked my french fries into like a disgusting person. Â The hubby ordered an open faced turkey and bacon sandwich that was topped with ranch dressing and cheese and baked until it was melty. Â He absolutely raved about it, saying it might possibly be his death row meal. Â They also had cider available, something the hubby loves and gets wherever it is served.
Prices were average for the area and type of food. Â I think if I was in the area again I would come back here for a bite to eat (as long as there was outdoor seating).
I'm from Rhode Island and I've been going to Truants since the early 90's. Â The place hasn't changed and that's a good thing. Â Whether I'm heading to Canada or vacationing in the White Mountains, I always stop in here for some good pub food and beer on draft. Â The service has always been good as well as the food. Â I love the low light setting and "nook" feel of the back room. Â I now bring my kids there and they love it also. Â Here's to another 20 years of a great spot to eat in NH....!
On a side note, the nice lady who manages the place also sells artwork. Â I bought a great picture of the Old Man (on the mountain) that she made which is hanging in my office. Â You should check out the gallery to the right when you walk in to Truants.
I came here this weekend with my husband and some friends after spending the afternoon at Lost River Gorge. My dad has raved about this place to me for a while now so I thought since we were in the area we mine as well stop in. We walked in to a dim lit pub like restaurant and I loved the feel I got! We were seated by our hostess and took a look at the menu. My husband and our friend instantly found what they wanted - the chili cheese burger, which sounded delicious. Me and our other friend also ordered some yummy food and the wait wasn't long at all. They have lots of beer on tap which is nice. The food came and we all dug in, I think we all finished every bite. I live a good 2 hours away but if I were closer, this would be a regular spot for me!
Review Source:My girlfriend stopped here for a drink before going out for dinner. Â Very cozy bar downstairs with that local feel. Â There was live music which was a nice touch. Â The nachos were huge and put a big dent in our appetite for dinner. Â Didn't spend anytime upstairs but it looks like a cool place to hang out for some pool. Â We liked it. Â Just a relaxing place for a quick drink and an app. Â Again, sort of off the main street of Lincoln so it felt less crowded.
Review Source:There was a 20-30 min wait on a Sunday evening. The hostess informed us that there is a bar upstairs for drinks and also some pool tables to entertain our wait. To no surprise, these pool table are not regulation size. We decided to chill at the counter till we realized that there are isn't really a way for us to know when our table is ready. Yup, we ended up stand by the hostess stand to wait for our table.
Perhaps because we are from the city that we thought the service was ultra slow. I never experienced pub food to be at the speed of fine dining till here.
Among the 5 of us, we shared the appetizer sampler and buffalo wings. Maybe cuz we were starving so we pretty much devoured the apps. For my dinner, I ordered Baked Stuffed Haddock. Looks like they used oyster crackers for this dish. This is awefully dry that I asked for butter to smother some juice into this dried out fish. Moreover, the side of mashed was also dry; and the steamed veggies was bland. I basically butterized everything.
First question, why with such a large building to they decide that all dining occurs in the basement? And if you are thinking your not in a basement because you can go out the back door to the patio (first choice seating if you ask me) just check out the bathrooms. Mildew is VERY prevalent throughout. Now I would probably get over the run down state of the building over all, the mold smell through out the basement floor if the food was up to the cost (or the cost was down to the food) but a 10.00 sandwich is a bit pricey when your eating in a basement. There are some good items on the menu: turkey club on homemade bread, yum. Great bread by the way. Waitress service excellent. Don't get the Reuben. They really should check dates on the meat. Lunch for four including childrens menu order over 70.00.... Meanwhile I have to get back to the building issue. They have an entire first floor walk out to main street. Set up for bar? reception? with great views out the back of the river? Is the building condemned? No one allowed up stairs? Can't be the case looks like rooms for rent on the second floor. All these questions and the run down look with over prices really does take away from the historical or campy aspects. Hey same price you can go up the street to the Inn.... and I would recommend doing just that, or grab a sub at the sub shop and sit out on the rocks by the river.... now that's the way to eat lunch.
Review Source:This spot was just sorta alright for me. They had a ton of good beer on tap, which is always awesome.
We ordered a bunch of appetizers to snack on. We got the potato skins, mozzarella sticks, onion rings and chicken fingers. They were all pretty decent I would say, nothing terrible but also nothing that stuck out as excellent.
Our waiter was your typical "Boston prick type" heavy on the accent, quick and to the point and rough around the edges, I have grown up around this type of person so I take no notice, but for you out of New Englanders, this may just come off as prickish and not endearing at all.
Check this spot out if you are taking the Kancamangus Hwy to White Mountains National Forest or Mt. Washington. If you don't there won't be much on the other side waiting for you, beer wise that is!
I've been to Truants many times in my life. Â From ski vacations as a kid with my family... to White Mountain excursions with my wife and kids. Â We always make it a point to stop at Truants anytime we are passing through the area. Â The rustic schoolhouse decor and ambiance is very comfortable. Â The food is always great! Â We are typically there for lunch, and the sandwich list is perfect. Â I highly recommend "The Salutatorian" (reuben) or the Tuna melt. Â Decent beer menu, including a couple of Woodstock Brewery selections (brewed right down the street). Â If you are in the area... definitely stop in!
Review Source:Truants was great. I had the spaghetti Pie. where else have you heard of a Spaghetti Pie? it was like a Keish pie with spaghetti inside. It was incredibly yummy. They even will give you sauce to pour over it if you want and ithere are 3 meatballs with it and 2 pieces of garlic bread. After the soda...bill came to like $14. Not bad for  agreat meal . they have a variety of food from american food to mexican....food served till 9....bar open later. A great stop after a long day of hiking! Pleasant and prompt staff. Lucas is an amazing waiter. He single handedly handled half the dining room, with a large group there and the outside dining patio too. which is great in summer. - Truly a wonderful find close to franconia Notch State park and the campgrounds. A family friendly atmosphere despite the fact it is a tavern. there's even an ice cream place across the street for dessert!
Check this place out. Just off exit 32 on route 3 in No. Woodstock, on your way to Clark's Trading post. (3North)
Enjoy! Truants is a True Gem!
