We went in with a party of 8. The restaurant was not crowded when we arrived, but became busy by the time we left. Upon seating, the waiter asked us if we would like to order drinks and ignored the over 21 children we had with us. We had to flag him down to have drink orders for the rest of our party. When the waitress finally came over, she obviously was new, but did not seem to understand how to describe a dish and to have an order with dressing on the side.

Half of our party ordered the bison burger..It was fantastic. Of the rest of our party three had to send the meals back, due to poor quality. No manager even came over to ask what the problem was...I would give a 4 star for the burgers and the setting, but a 1 star for service and managements interest in the patrons.

Went for a late afternoon meal at Tweeds after visiting the Parrish Art Museum and Channing Daughter's winery (both recommended). Bartender came from behind the bar to serve us and what a pleasure! Food and service were excellent - ceasar salad, which in my view any salad is a benchmark for a restaurant, was classic and exceptional. Oysters were local and awesome and bison burgers, reuben, and hanger steak were all cooked well and presented well. Only complaint - not enough local wines on the menu.

I recently became aware that Long Island has a thriving buffalo ranch out in Riverhead called North Quarter Farm. When I started digging around online about it, I came across a few articles written over the last 10 or 15 years that championed the effort. See the NY Times Article and the Long Island Press Article. I learned that the farm owners also have a steakhouse-type restaurant called Tweeds, run by the husband of the bison ranch team, where they proudly feature many items that derive from bison (buffalo mozz, buffalo hanger steak, buffalo rib eye, buffalo reuben sandwich, etc). There's even a second restaurant, right next door and run by the wife in the farm team, called Dark Horse. This place is more of a casual bar type of place, with a modern decor and music selection, featuring items like buffalo pate and buffalo pastrami sandwiches. I inquired about whether they use the actual buffalo from the farm in the restaurants. The answer was no. Unfortunately their bison must go out to PA to be USDA certified before they can be slaughtered and cooked up into delicious food. But I thought it was cool that they put as much buffalo meat onto the menu as possible to pay tribute to their ranch business. They even offer buffalo meat cuts (steaks of all kinds, pate, chopped meat, etc) to buy and take home for your own cooking adventures.

So my wife and I decided to take a drive out there to try the food and to see the farm. We settled on eating at Tweeds, since we liked the interior better and it was a little more quiet. Since we ordered from the lunch menu I couldn't realistically give the place a full review here, but I thought it was worth mentioning in a commentary with some photos. The place was beautiful inside, rich with local history and an old timey atmosphere. Apparently the giant bison head on the wall beside the bar is the actual last bison that Teddy Roosevelt ever hunted. Pretty cool. The service was excellent; our waitress Janine was really nice, helpful, and sweet. They had a great selection of German beers on tap and in bottles, and the food was fucking delicious. We started with a bison skewer and a couple of beers. The meat was juicy and tender; cooked just right. For my entree I had a bison hanger steak. It too was perfectly cooked, juicy, and delicious. It came with a peppercorn cognac cream sauce that I could drink by the gallon. So good. My wife had the corned bison Reuben sandwich. Just like a regular corned beef Reuben, but with corned bison. It was incredible, and served with some big sliced pickles. Both of our meals came with potato wedges, deep fried with the skin still on for a really delicious, crispy, homemade pile of steak fries. Needless to say we will definitely be going back here for a proper dinner, where I can sink my teeth into a buffalo rib eye (it wasn't on the lunch menu).

i have to tell you i always liked this place , love the décor and the bartenders have always been nice ,but we went the other day and sat at the bar and had some oysters ,they were very good but you have to loose the short older women waitress with the red hair who kept telling her friend at the bar how manyidiots she has had to train there and calling one of the people she works there a lesbian term that was anything but acceptable and kept repeating it while standing at the bar ,are you kidding ?????i guess she was perfect i will never go back if this sort of behavior is accepted

Went to Tweeds on Saturday and ordered the cowboy ribeye which was filled with gristle, and the fluke catch of the day--the portion was quite small. Had the $16 buffalo mozzarella with unripe tomato appetizer. Also had a bottle of wine, which was the highlight of the meal. When it came time to pay our $160 bill, we presented our $50 http://Restaurant.com coupon which we were told would not be honored, regardless to the fact that we had paid for the coupon and upgraded our meal as we thought we'd be getting a reduced fee . Further, THE OWNER stated that if we did not pay in full, he would call the cops which was odd, as we never threatened to not pay the bill. He left in a huff and returned to his table never to return leaving his waitress to negotiate on his behalf. Seems odd that the owner would go that far out of his way to irritate his customers.

Tweeds is a real treasure. The food is absolutely amazing, with a classic historic feel, and even a lovely back patio. All of the food is incredible but I recommend getting bison, which features heavily on the menu. Tweed's owner Edwin owns a buffalo farm less than 3 miles from Tweed's location. We actually stopped by the farm, at which the buffalo were roaming free in grassy meadows.

Tweeds is one of my favorite steakhouses in Long Island. Or should I say one of my favorite Bisonhouses in Long Island. The outside is so cool looking. An old fashioned hotel from the 1800's. the inside is dimly lit with all the buffalo you can eat. I ordered a bison filet on the rare side with potatoe and veggies. The food is awesome ,unique, and oh so good. After you eat drive a mile down the road and check out what your eating. They have a Bison farm there. Park your car on the side of the road and check out the buffalo. Tweeds. You are the best

What a sucker I am. I've been eating beef all this time when I could have enjoyed Bison!!

Enjoyed a nice meal at Tweeds last night. We started with the Bison kebab. These are seven or eight kabobs on a skewer with their own barbque sauce. They were cooked rare, and even though me and my wife usually prefer medium meats, these were wonderful. The BBQ sauce is a little sweet with a deep tomato taste.

For dinner my wife had the bison T-Bone. Nicely cooked and a decent piece of meat. I had the cowboy bison steak. Another nice cut, smaller than what you would expect at a classic steakhouse but man is it flavorful. They also manage to get a good sear on the outside. It was a little overdone for medium but it was still moist and very tasty. They have a standard mashed potato and vegetable medley, but there is nothing to see here. It was cooked well but that's about all I would say about it. The butter blend they serve is an absolute dream and goes well with the meat, making it all the more tasty.

As a rare treat we had dessert as well. My wife had the vanilla ice cream with fudge (I think) and I went for the key lime pie. We enjoyed both and it was the perfect finish to the meal.

While I wouldn't go five stars for ambiance, Tweeds does have a certain closeness that's hard to match. Maybe Cliff's Elbow Room come close. Everything is close, not so close that chairs have to moved as you walk by, but you definitely feel that if everyone moved their chairs back six inches there would be no way to get out of the place.

As for price, this is steakhouse priced all in expect to go $60 per person plus tip, more if you need a bottle to go with dinner. Not complaining, it was money well spent. I'll be back in the summer for some bison steaks for the grill.

I'd describe Tweed's restaurant as costly, delicious and quant. I only really go there for the bison burgers which are delicious. The burgers are huge and are pretty expensive as far as burgers and fries go but are worth it if you have a big appetite and ever feel like treating yourself at a restaurant in Riverhead. Also if your a tourist in Riverhead it's definitely something to experience since there are so many farms and ranches in the area. It's a way to get a sense of the town. The restaurant is very nice in terms of it's layout and decor. I'd recommend it.

I've always been hesitant to try this restaurant because I assumed it was costlier than it is. For lunch, it's probably only slightly more expensive than other restaurants on the street. And so far, it far exceeds them in quality. I was infinitely impressed with the quality and size of the Bison Reuben which came with a whole wedge of potatoes and a whole sliced full pickle ($14). I only have one rather bizarre suggestion for the management. While the pickle was excellent, it would really add a unique flavor to the menu if they used more exotic, more flavorful artisanal pickles, which are widely available these days. I realize that is a very small thing, but it's just another interesting way to set themselves apart from its other admirable competitors on the block. Plus it helps out local farmers and small businesses who specialize in such things. Either way, excellent restaurant for lunch.

I never had Bison before and I'm not a big meat eater, but my dad insisted that we should go here so I can try it. My dad has been here before and likes this place.
My burger was definitely huge and it was good. But like I said, I'm not a big meat eater. This is one of the better burgers I've had in my life, but it wasn't anything special. I would only come here again if I'm out by the outlets and my dad wants to go.

Old school favorite in our area. Known for their bison meats which is raised locally in their own farms, my husband and kid LOVES their bison burgher -- honestly one is enough for the two of them, but they insistent on having their own. The burgher is bigger than their faces LOL!! I don't eat meat, but no matter -- they have a KILLING lobster ravioli (homemade, with CHUNKS of lobster meat both in the ravioli and in their sauce), one of the best crab cakes around, raw bar with local clams and oysters with their own horseradish, great steamers, etc. I hear their steak is also fantastic (one of my "city" friends swear by the "cowboy steak",) and they make a killing martini that my Russian husband puts his stamp of approval on (hard to please them Russians on anything vodka related!). I won't lie, this place is not cheap, but they do accept http://restaurant.com coupons, which help, and it's definitely one of our better restaurants in this area. Highly recommended!

Went here for lunch with my dad one day and it was really good. Decor is cool, kinda of a little western-ish. We were seating right away and there was no one else in there but I heard for dinners it can get busy and it's better to have a reservation. Tried the Buffalo hanger steak and it was amazing, it comes with a cream sauce, some fried potato slices and a salad. It cost $27, a little pricey but for the portion size (there was more than enough to take home) and taste it was well worth it, would def come back here.

We were with friends who raved about bison being on the menu. Bison certainly takes top billing here. I decided to try the Bison burger for $20 plus $2 for each topping. It was huge and I couldn't finish it. In my opinion, however, no burger is worth that much money.

The service was good and attentive. Would probably try another restaurant before returning.

I'd been wanting to try Tweeds for some time, so when my friend and I realized we were equidistant to it, we jumped at the opportunity to try it for lunch.

Were it not for one colossal spoiler, I would have given Tweeds five stars, more if possible. The décor is exactly what you would hope for, in a town and building of this vintage and purpose. The seating is very comfortable, and the tables are well spaced without being remote.

We had planned to have bison burgers, as bison was a new experience for my friend, but, recalling a phenomenal bison fillet mignon at Denver's Buckhorn Exchange, I asked if they served it here as well. Sure enough, it was on their dinner menu, and they were happy to prepare it for our lunch. It was superb -- incredibly in rich flavor and having that wonderful velvety texture -- cooked to perfection, and served with a lovely salad and crispy leek strips. Our desserts (a tart key lime pie and a heavenly mound of chocolate) did not disappoint.

Our waitress was friendly, attentive, informative, and she never pushed us, even though we lingered over our lunch and wine for four hours!

However, I cannot give Tweeds five stars because there was an infuriating piano player, who banged away relentlessly and inaccurately. Both my friend and I are in the music business, and it was torture to have this noise invading our conversation. Worse: it also seemed that the piano was amplified, sounding bright in an acoustically soft room. WHAT IS THIS TREND OF INTRUSIVE LIVE MUSIC? AND WHEN WILL RESTAURANTS LEARN THAT PEOPLE ARE THERE TO ENJOY GOOD FOOD WITH GOOD COMPANY, NOT TO HEAR A (bad) CONCERT? If Tweeds must have music at lunch, quiet, canned BACKGROUND would be an improvement. Also, as we were there for hours, we had ample time to hear complaints about him from at least three other tables as well.

We will return to Tweeds for the excellent fare and the friendly ambiance, but I will call in advance to book a time when there is no live music.

First off I have never had Bison to begin with so to try and compare the food here to somewhere else would be next to impossible. But I'll give you the run down of my opinion:

Make a reservation if you want to go. If you do not make a reservation for a Friday or Saturday night (which is when I went) you may not get a table. We arrived an hour early and were told to wait as our reservation wasn't until an hour later. We were seated 20 minutes later. I might add that the maitre'd brought my wineglass from the bar to our table which I was impressed by.

The decor was pleasant. Not too bright but not too dim either. We were able to read our menus which counts. Online prices are not accurate. More expensive in reality. There was a live piano player somewhere in the restaurant. Waitress was attentive. She came over right away, first asking if we wanted anything to drink besides what we brought from the bar.

For the appetizer we had the special: Bison Carpaccio; thinly sliced bison tenderloin seared and peppered on the outside served with spinach greens drizzled with a dressing. Their version was not raw as standard carpaccio is supposed to be. It was delicious regardless. Bison has an interesting texture and flavor that can hardly be described easily. It has a sweet taste that you will not find in beef. It melts in your mouth.

My boyfriend ordered the Grilled Bison Cowboy Steak (a bone-in rib eye with roasted garlic puree). It came with smashed potatoes and vegetables (cauliflower, broccoli and baby carrots). He asked for it rare and that is exactly how it came. I tried his and thought it was yummy as rare. I ordered the Tweeds Bison Hanger Steak (served with wild mushroom cognac cream sauce) cooked medium rare. It literally melted in my mouth. The vegetables were just the way I like mine to be: cooked with crunch. We both expected a large plate of food which is not how it came. It was portioned appropriately. We also ordered dessert; pecan pie. Delicious!

Overall weighing the cost against the food I think the 2 hour drive out to Long Island was worth it and I would go back again bringing other diners with me.

Tweeds is a decent restaurant (steakhouse) in Riverhead. Our most recent visit this past weekend proved quite interesting. Upon entering the premesis from the back door we were greeted by the host. The restaurant was empty at this time with the exception of one group of diners at the front of the building. He asked us if we were there for the wine party. We said sorry, we were not. He then glanced around the restaurant and after a bit of hesitation said well, I suppose you can sit here. We were seated at a very nice table adjacent to the fireplace. After declining to order a cocktail, we waited to place our order with our waitress. We ordered salads, a filet mignon and bison filet dinners. We found the food to be quite good with decent size portions. And although they sounded quite delicious, we declined dessert, as we were quite full. As we were preparing to leave our waitress and the bartender bid us good night, but the grouchy host refused to turn around and acknowledge us. In addition, with the exception of that wine party in the front, we were the only patrons there that evening. To sum it up Tweeds is a decent restaurant , but it suffers terribly in customer relations. You can expect a very good burger or steak, but no smiles from your host.

Food, outstanding. Had the Duck for an appetizer. First time eating duck. Bison hanger was cooked to perfection. Potatoes, a little dry. Service, could be quicker; but with the live piano player and the overall ambiance of the place, we really didn't mind the wait. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Old world charm since 1896, in the oldest running establishment in Riverhead, Tweeds Buffalo Bar has a small, intimate setting nice for lunch and dinner with leather tufted seating and historical pictures and newspaper articles throughout. The bison burger is excellent as I've had it a few times here and also the Aquebogue Duck cooked 2 ways, duck leg confit and breast in a blackberry reduction is fantastic!

BISON. It's what's for dinner folks. Bison is also known as the American Buffalo and I'm not quite sure how I've missed a restaurant solely focusing on bison meat for the 20+years I've been on Longuyland. It's sweeter, leaner (less fattier) and much healthier (less cholesterol and fat) than BEEF. Time to start upping my bison intake and decreasing my beef intake; here's how it went down:

MEAT / BISON aka the American Buffalo:
+ Buffalo Cowboy Steak / Bone-in Ribeye with roasted garlic puree. $42. I had it done rare at 120 degrees as how I order all of my steaks and it was damn good. I really should start eating more BISON and less BEEF since it's what's for dinner in a healthier way. It was slightly sweet, juicy, not-salty, soft, succulent, flavorful and melted in your mouth. It wasn't chewy or gamey at ALL and these guys obviously know what they're doing with BISON. However, the roasted garlic puree was nowhere to be found!??!?!
+ Tweeds Bison Hangar Steak with Wild Mushroom Cognac Cream Sauce. $32. This too was $25 on the website menu and it still is as I write this. DO NOT guy by what the website tells you as the prices are wrong. Anyhow, the steak was done perfectly to my friend's liking and the cognac cream sauce was DAMN good. I guess if you take mushrooms, cognac, heavy cream, enough butter and flour to thicken it with some salt and pepper, you can't screw it up and it can be nothing but YUMMY.

Appetizers:
+ Calamari. The calamari was one of the specials for the evening and it was "good". It wasn't fabulous, wasn't horrible but was just "good". The breading was crisp, a littler darker than I'm used to but the calamari itself was cooked perfectly. The dipping sauce they gave us however was some thickened vodka sauce variant that didn't do anything for the calamari except add extra calories. Perhaps they should do a classic marinara or do something Thai/peanut based as my friend mentioned.
- Long Island Cheese Board. None of the cheeses on this board were from Longuyland, the waiter didn't explain to us what the cheeses were, we had to guess on our own and fortunately both of us were knowledgeable in the cheese category so were were able to figure out what they were. We brought it to the waiter's attention that he hadn't explained to us what the cheeses were at which point he proceeded to tell us that the cheeses were LEFOTVER from a champagne dinner the night before at the restaurant. SO WHY THE HELL SERVE THIS TO US!? None were Longuyland cheeses...though it's cheese and I'll still eat it but...for $17? COME ON. At least TELL US what you're serving us...he mentioned that one of them was a "spicy jack" which one slice was, and then the other 3 slices in that pile were black truffle. Ummm black truffle and pepper jack are 2 different things.

Parking:
+ There's plenty of parking in the back and it's right in the heart of the aging downtown district of Riverhead.

Other:
- Your cell phones will have poor service due to the thick walls in the building. The restaurant is in an old hotel, the J.J. Sulllivan hotel which dates back to 1896. Awesome!
- There are a TON of fruit flies flying around...the bartender and others have confirmed the fact that they have a "fly" problem. After a while, you'll get used to it
- It's a long and narrow restaurant, and if sit on the long booth side which spans the restaurant, you'll have a constant cold breeze/draft on you from the AC vents up top. For me, it was too cold...and I LOVE IT cold!
- The website is OLD AND OUTDATED. The prices for items in the restaurant are quite a bit more than the website states. For example, I was set on getting the BISON cowboy steak/bone-in ribeye and it was $36 on the website; I learn while looking at the menu at the restaurant that it's actually $42. $6 increase!!!

Overall? I'll definitely go back for my BISON fixings. The reason why it gets 4 Yelps which I'm rounding up from 3.5 because of the fact that these guys KNOW their BISON. However, if it was just another restaurant, it would be getting 3 from me at the maximum and that's IF I was in a good mood; mainly because of the nice waiter though not efficient, the cheese shenanigans, the fruit flies and didn't do a few things that he should've as I've described in the cheese section.

Delicious, good, wonderful, fantastic... I love Tweeds. The service is great and everything I've ever tried was delicious. I'm a vegetarian and it's a great place I can go to with my foodie father (who's super into burgers and steaks) and not feel limited.

This is a real restaurant. Impeccable service... amazing and surprising food. In the middle of beat down Riverhead..... a journey to another time and place....it was started back in the 1800s, and like they remember how a business and food establishment is supposed to be run.

You cannot go wrong ordering anything here.

I was very disappointed by this restaurant since it came highly recommended. Not only was the service poor but the food was nothing special either. I ordered the New England Clam chowder which was completely over salted. For my entree I had the filet mignon which was under salted with no flavor. It came with a side sauce but that was too spicey for me. Also my glass of wine was never offered to be refilled, and in my book thats no good.

The only thing I liked about this restaurant was how quiet and intimate it was. But I won't be back for that.

One last thing, there was live music there. I wasn't a fan to say the least!

Stumbled upon this place on the way out to the li vineyards. Although there were no other patrons on a Monday afternoon we were incredibly surprised. The bison Reuben was quite possibly the best sandwich I have had in ages. Would love to return here for dinner sometime.

We went to Tweeds for lunch. Their shtick is buffalo meat, although you can get other things like tuna salad and duck, etc...

The place is small and the tables are pushed together is rows. Which gives the impression that you may be bumping elbows with some one other than your dinner party, however they do seat guests apart as best they can.

The service was a little slow, but it was also busy while we were there. The waitress was pleasant and knew the menu well.

I ordered the French Onion soup which was probably the best I've ever had. The broth was thicker and sweeter than you would normally get elsewhere. In contrast, my wife just thought it was "ok", for the same reasons that I liked it.

I also had a bison reuben. The portion was fairly large and the accompanying fries where large and perfectly cooked.

In my opinion Tweeds is a bit expensive at lunchtime. For two people you expect to pay at least $50 not including tip.

Would I go back? Absolutely.

Just moved to LI and wanted a good meal. After a visit to the discount mall, my wife suggested we stop here for dinner. Neither had been there before. What a nice place. The appointments are very well done and cozy. Dark wood everywhere. Super good looking bar. Service was "Goldilocks. Not too fast, not too slow, just right. The food was beyond great. Started off with duck pate. Great app but could have used a few more crostini. Had bison cowboy steak (bone-in rib eye) and elk hanger steak. Both cooked to perfection and served with starch and fresh vegetables. Don't get alarmed that there only crazy meats here. They have excellent selection of beef, fish and pasta. This place is a keeper and we will return.

Tweed's has been on my list of places to dine with my meetup group. When my son came from NYC to work on a case at the court house, I suggest lunch at Tweed's. You enter the historic bld. that has loads of charm...you know big ole bar, white table cloths with sparkling interior. It was better than anticipated. Once seated my son ordered a coffee. Two files circled as we spoken and than a gnat came to check in. I watched as my son was fishing in his coffee for a blk dot. He said, "Fly, don't worry abt. it", and laid the carcass on his saucer as he tilted the cup to his lips. The service was extremely slow. The salads I would rate highly. The Mediterranean my son had was brim full of feta, red onion...the works, plus two stuffed grape leaves. Mine was Caesar, as I like it, but my son's stole the show. Bison dishes fill the menu, but I decided that duck was for me. My son had bison. Having just eaten a lge plate of salad I was surprised to discover that one third of my duck order was salad. We should have been told. My duck wrap was huge and arrived sliced in half. I stuck a fork in the middle to wedge out a piece of meat for my son to taste. The second I pulled out the fork of meat from the wrap a fly flew out! I thought, do I believe my eyes. It was shocking...a real show stopper. My son roared in laughter. I told him that if he could drink coffee laced with fly I could down the wrap and did so. Mom be no wimp. The duck was perfect, crispy parts interspersed with melt in your mouth soft parts with an Asian sauce that had a kick you would not forget. I didn't ck the desserts. I did ask to speak to the mgr but no one was there. The incident was related to the woman behind the bar, and she said, Yeah, we have a fly prob. You should have told me and we would have made another wrap." The svc being so slow I was not ab. to wait longer. However, knowing there was a prob. something should have been done. With two at my table how many were raiding the kitchen?? I thought the place was great otherwise. The food was wonderful, and I will take my gp to Tweeds...now, do I divulge the fly story bef. or aft. the meal? (wink, wink) Ck out Tweeds but wait until fall when the fly population dwindles. Wonder what fly tastes like? I am still surprised at the occurrence. It was both awful and awfully funny.

What a find of a little place.. the main floor of what was an old town hotel from the turn of the century... in the middle of the aging Riverhead town.. On the wall a buffalo head that is cuddly and should never have been shot -

If your not vegetarian.. and we all probably should be.. this place has organic buffalo.

They cook buffalo rare so its not tough.. with a delectable sauce on the side.

I also tried a fresh fish with rice.. which was unbelievable with fresh ginger.. a light cream sauce.. and perfectly sauted vegs.

They served a local Lenz 2004 Chardonnay which was perfect and chilled more than I would usually chill a wine.. and had an effervescence about it... It was 2008 and held up well as a chard is usually reccomended 1-2 years.. but can go longer.

Yes, they have a $19 burger ($21 + with cheese) and yes it is too big to finish and more than rare in the center, and yes people love it. That's never my pick but it is good. They have a smaller lunch burger.. but the big one is somehow better, so better off sharing or saving a piece for you hounds if you have any.

The word for this place is FLAVOR. Everything is super fresh.. and has a variety of subtle and distincly seductive flavors.

They are real restaurateurs.

I recommended Tweeds to an associate of mine who can be tougher than me on a place.. Dining with the former NYT's critic of the 80s for years in NYC & the Hampton's...she is hard to please.. and she loves it and has returned with friends.. I am sure each person I recommend will feel the same way.

Tweeds is worth a trip - but conveniently located between the North Fork & South Fork at near the end of the LIE.
