I drove from Chicago to Buffalo, NY for a Quake 2 Capture the Flag LAN.  I had never met the guys in real life.  We went to Ulrich's the first night for birch beers, sausages, sweet potato pancakes, and my request, beefs on weck.  Ulrich's is buffalo's oldest continuously operated restaurant, since 1868.  I tried Weber's horseradish mustard, popular in NY state since 1922.  The food was excellent, but the service really put it over the top.  The woman who served us is married to a man who games, and she related to us on that level.  She related to us as human beings.

Very disappointed, I have been wanting to go here for years, finally I made it and wish I had never went. I went on a friday for a German fish fry. The inside is cool, very old but clean for the most part, the chairs are the worst but i'm not picky. We sat down waited forever to see our waitress, after about 10 mins, she comes, takes our drinks and it took her about the same amount of time to retrive 2 drinks, but there were only 2 servers so I understood she may have been busy. After this were all set to order, she drops our drinks off then leaves for another 10MINS! There was only 2 of us, we both orded the german fish fry. THIS is were the story gets good, I seen that the fish comes with kraut, which I personaly think is disgusting, especially on a fish fry, so I asked nicely if they could just hold the kraut, she rolls her eyes at me and replies, i'll see what I can do the chef is busy and walked away. I almost got up and left. Next the fish comes out, the fish was under cooked, the batter was horrible and it was luke warm. The potato panckaes were great, but the fries were so over seasoned I couldent eat them. I was trying to catch a flight and after waiting so long for the service we were in a bit of a rush so I asked her for the check and of course she had a smart ass remark. Then get this, 2 fish frys and 1 pepsi(they dont have refills so I got charged for 2) it cost 40$ wich is un herd of for a fish fry in buffalo. I found this out after she threw the check book on the table. I will never return to this place, no wonder this place is going down, it needs to be on restaurant impossible. So so food and horrible service makes for a horid experience, save your money and try a true buffalo gem. OH and if you go on a night they have music bring ear plugs ITS SO LOUD when your trying to eat you cant hear the people your sitting with, and its right in the dining room, shouldent it be in thr bar?

I'm in heaven when I have Ulrich's German Fish Fry. Heavy, hearty, comfort food at its finest! The fish is crisp and fresh, The German Potato Pancake is like lead and makes you feel like you are in your grandmother latke heaven, with sour cream and applesauce, the sauerkraut is not that harsh awful stuff from a can. It must be cooked for hours to get that harsh vinegar taste out and the coleslaw is good. A Flying Bison or Saranac beer completes the meal. Just perfect for a cold winter night with some good German or Irish music! The place is much fancier than it used to be, but the help is terrific and the atmosphere is too.
