I drove from Chicago to Buffalo, NY for a Quake 2 Capture the Flag LAN. Â I had never met the guys in real life. Â We went to Ulrich's the first night for birch beers, sausages, sweet potato pancakes, and my request, beefs on weck. Â Ulrich's is buffalo's oldest continuously operated restaurant, since 1868. Â I tried Weber's horseradish mustard, popular in NY state since 1922. Â The food was excellent, but the service really put it over the top. Â The woman who served us is married to a man who games, and she related to us on that level. Â She related to us as human beings.
Review Source:Very disappointed, I have been wanting to go here for years, finally I made it and wish I had never went. I went on a friday for a German fish fry. The inside is cool, very old but clean for the most part, the chairs are the worst but i'm not picky. We sat down waited forever to see our waitress, after about 10 mins, she comes, takes our drinks and it took her about the same amount of time to retrive 2 drinks, but there were only 2 servers so I understood she may have been busy. After this were all set to order, she drops our drinks off then leaves for another 10MINS! There was only 2 of us, we both orded the german fish fry. THIS is were the story gets good, I seen that the fish comes with kraut, which I personaly think is disgusting, especially on a fish fry, so I asked nicely if they could just hold the kraut, she rolls her eyes at me and replies, i'll see what I can do the chef is busy and walked away. I almost got up and left. Next the fish comes out, the fish was under cooked, the batter was horrible and it was luke warm. The potato panckaes were great, but the fries were so over seasoned I couldent eat them. I was trying to catch a flight and after waiting so long for the service we were in a bit of a rush so I asked her for the check and of course she had a smart ass remark. Then get this, 2 fish frys and 1 pepsi(they dont have refills so I got charged for 2) it cost 40$ wich is un herd of for a fish fry in buffalo. I found this out after she threw the check book on the table. I will never return to this place, no wonder this place is going down, it needs to be on restaurant impossible. So so food and horrible service makes for a horid experience, save your money and try a true buffalo gem. OH and if you go on a night they have music bring ear plugs ITS SO LOUD when your trying to eat you cant hear the people your sitting with, and its right in the dining room, shouldent it be in thr bar?
Review Source:I'm in heaven when I have Ulrich's German Fish Fry. Heavy, hearty, comfort food at its finest! The fish is crisp and fresh, The German Potato Pancake is like lead and makes you feel like you are in your grandmother latke heaven, with sour cream and applesauce, the sauerkraut is not that harsh awful stuff from a can. It must be cooked for hours to get that harsh vinegar taste out and the coleslaw is good. A Flying Bison or Saranac beer completes the meal. Just perfect for a cold winter night with some good German or Irish music! The place is much fancier than it used to be, but the help is terrific and the atmosphere is too.
Review Source:Full disclosure- this is my neighborhood beer joint and I have been going in for years.
The friendly and civil tone of the place is my first and strongest rave. Â You never know who will be there. Â It could be the Goo Goo Dolls people, working folks, scientists, second generation regulars, politicals- who knows? Â It is consistently friendly with a wide range of ages, incomes etc. Â My pals and I have had a number of people jump into the group and join the conversation. Â The dominant sound on a busy night is people talking with each other, unless they have music. Â The Irish and German live music used to be more frequent and pull in the crowd to sing, stomp and cheer. Â Ein prosit!
This is a draft beer place, with enough taps for variety, but not too many. Â I have never tasted a tired nor oxidized beer, never a greasy glass here. Â Guinness, Spaten and Blue are standards and Flying Bison is prominently featured. Â Right now their English Pub Bitter is quenching me. Â Now and then you will see a small-batch specialty keg here. Â Drink up while it's there- I still regret missing the end of Poor Richard's Ale on Ben Franklins birthday. Â They have a full bar to meet everyone's needs. Â June makes a mean Manhattan.
The kitchen has gone through three staffs in my tenure. Â I have had great meals from each one. Â Since the September 4 2012 re-opening I have eaten once so far. Â It was STELLAR. Â Cornmeal crusted catfish with Creole sauce, fresh mashed potatoes, French onion soup and potato pancakes. Â The soup was even better than before. Â Carmelized onion, crusty cheese, rich broth- I slobber thinking about it. Â Biting the crisp crust yielded juicy catfish cooked to perfection with just enough sauce to compliment, not overpower. Â Home made mashed potatoes with butter and rosemary- 'nuff said. Â The potato pancakes are now thinner and more crispy, which is an improvement on the older style.
Service is friendly and can vary. Â If you need to get to a show on time tell them and they will get you in and out. Â I think they get a little overwhelmed at times when the place is packed. Â All servers have been as attentive as they could be. Â Even when things have gone a little awry the staff is friendly. Â After a long wait for dinner on a busy Saturday night our party of eight was given a round of very pricey whiskey on the house, which pretty much sums up the tone of the place.
My dog was hugged by a rock star at Ulrich's, when he was wet (the dog, that is). Â Words can not express my satisfaction. Â Go to Ulrich's to eat, drink and be merry.
Ugh! I decided to eat here once because I heard good things about it. It's one of the oldest bars in Buffalo, with tons of history, yaddy yaddy yadda. That history does nothing for its food because it was awful. I ordered the Kaiser's Platter, one of the plates that has everything, sauerkraut, German potato salad, red pickled cabbage, bratwurst, weisswurst, and potato pancakes. The sausage was so bland and dry and the pickled cabbage was gross. I had to soak the sausages in mustard because they literally had no flavor. The sauerkraut was okay, but the potato pancakes were the worst potato pancakes I've ever had. Usually I love potato pancakes and can't stop eating them -- I'm from Wisconsin which has phenomenal potato pancakes and coleslaw :) -- but these pancakes were tasteless and greasy. They basically tasted like really bad hashbrowns in a pancake shape...Never again will I eat here. Boycotting Ulrich's for life!
P.S. They closed recently for not paying their taxes. There were signs all over the window proclaiming it. What that means is they think they're too good to support their city. Even more reason to not to go here. What a bunch of jerks!
Since re-opening their menu has shrunk and the quality of food has gone bad. How can you screw up Bologna and onions? It was soggy and cold with the skin still on the bologna. My friends Ruben sandwich was cold in the center. It was lunch time and not as crowded as has been in the past
Review Source:Ulrichs is a must visit in Buffalo. Â It is the best place in the city to make bar buddies. Â The friendliest bartenders, especially when the owner is there pouring beer. Â The mix of Irish and German is perfect and throw in some good buffalo wings and its a mix made for parties. We had the best time with our hockey team after playing at the arena. Â I will always return to this jewel.
Review Source:I'd never, ever been before but when my pal Chris Smith organized an official CashMob-slash-Cocktail Party on Sarturday 3/24/12, I had to make a trip down from the 14094.
I had a blast. Shoot, I had so much fun that I slapped down my credit card and bought drinks for everyone. EVERYONE! Old friends, new friends, the bartender, people I'll never see again, etc. Â THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS LATER, I was done.
The one thing I didn't do is eat. Pretty Michelle came and had a glass of white wine (what?) and ordered the sauerbraten and potato pancakes and I think I had a few bites but certainly not enough.
Anyway, when I rolled in the next morning, my husband was not amused.
SUCCESS!!!
This is a usual haunt for my friends. Â Everyone knows this is the oldest bar in Buffalo (and one of the oldest in the entire country) but that's not the only reason I like it. Â I like it because you can go there and hear unique music, both Irish and German. Â The kind of music that leads to making friends with the people sitting at the table next to you ... the kind that has everyone in the bar lifting their pints and saying "oy oy oy!" ... the kind that results in a conga line of strangers-soon-to-be-friends parading through the small dining area while singing along to the accordion, banjo, guitar ...
I have yet to find a bar that has ANY of the above, other than Ulrichs. Â
The service is generally very good, although I can picture at least one server who I dread waiting on me. Â The owner is great and you will always find him slinging drinks behind the bar, up for good, friendly conversation.
The only reason Ulrichs does not get 5 stars from me is because the food is not great. Â I've eaten there twice and am reminded why I only go there to drink. Â They need to hire a new head chef, that will solve the issue very quickly.
Otherwise, this is a great place where I love to bring my out of town guests. Â It is a perfect representation of Buffalo and Buffalo's great residents.
It is Buffalo's oldest documented continuously operating tavern/restaurant, established in 1868! Located near the Roswell Park and the Buffalo-Niagara Medical Campus. It has changed hands many times thus giving it an interesting history. From German to Irish and back again. These are the types of places that have the same menu every time you go in. Not much changes other then the people in the seats.
The walls are slapped with some amazing pieces of history, collected over the many years they have been open. On this particular evening (Thursday night) two tables were occupied and there was a full bar. We took over their front room to give our group some separation from the bar.
Everything here is consistent. The food is always good, the beer is always cold and the service is always friendly. While they may be out of some items on both their menu and beer list at times. There is always another option that is equally as good.
One of the worst service ever rendered. I went because of history. I was visiting my nephew who attends college in Buffalo. So I had him meet me here. The waitress was one of the worst I ever had. The food over priced for its cold delivery. Fries are made fresh so they sit and wait for a customer- Do you like luke warm to cold fries? Well I do not and the food was nothing to cheer about I ordered burgers and their signature potato pancake dish which was well over rated and not worth it- But I could have lived with all that and gave it a 2 1/2 star rating but the service was just that bad- This waitress during lunch over maybe only two other tables in the whole joint and she argued with me about why I wanted hot food amongst other things.. 2 THUMBS DOWN! I was super upset because my nephew and I could not enjoy things to best because of my pick here. Oh and the homemade chips I read the other reviews they must have been either drunk when they got them or they lucked up and ordered them with a good server who happened upon them with fresh serving out of the grease. I ordered all kinds of stuff so we could try..Wish I had not spent a dime here!
Review Source:I am happy to hear that I am not the only one who finds this place to be overpriced and crappy. I can use other terminology however I was not raised that way.
German??? Maybe by name but this place caterred to and most likely caused the break up of many a Trico employees marriage. They always had a Xmas in July Nudie review with what ever else was going on. Ask Erika ..the bitch..
Could never figure out why they had Bagpipes for St. Paddy's day ..bags are Scottish. St. Patrick is Irish. Two different cultures.. HELLO!!!
Food...well if you are experiencing bad now..imagine what it was like when cheap Erica manned the till after Jimmy passed on. Â
I have a perfectly good restaurant for German food...Scharfs. A thousand times better than what Ulrichs hopes to become
I went in excited but ended up super bummed on this place. They were out of the first two things I ordered (didn't tell me until after I asked for them), the servers just seemed generally vacant. It's really cold in there. Bad experience overall.
One of the kinds of sausage I got was pretty good everything else was mediocre to bad.
Come here if you have something to prove, otherwise go somewhere that has their act together.
Ulrich's is by far my favorite place in Buffalo. I make sure to stop by every time I'm in town. Amazing food, great beer, and the owner is absolutely hilarious. Two thumbs waaaaaaay up!
The tavern also has an amazing history. Ask about their days as a speakeasy during Prohibition.
...oh yeah, their home-made chips are delicious, too.
Ya! Das ist gut! Ya! Yaaaa! Nein! Nein! Nein! Nicht Gut! Neinnnnnnnnn!
I wanted to love this place and give it a high rating but I just didn't like the food as much as I liked other German places I've eaten.
I gave it a 4/5 because of its adorable location, its history, the friendliness of the people that go there, the legend surrounding the place, how authentic it is (old folks from the Old World with German roots often come here to reminisce that they are back in the Schwarzwald or something.
But having said all that, I haven't been back since the first time I came here, and I quite like German food, but with all of the good Polish eateries in the Buffalo area, the fare on offer here is not only perhaps substandard by comparison, but is also a lot more expensive than most of the local Polish places.
There is another German place (Rose Garden?) out towards Clarence and Lancaster, but I don't think the food or prices were any more impressive there either.
I've been there for many drinks, but never got around to eating the food. Â I decided to take my friend who was from out of town to this classic establishment for some quality beer. Â Their beer selection is perfect, not too many niche beers, but more then a handfull. Â A lot of times you go to bars who have tons of different beers and it ends up just sitting in the lines. Â I decided it was time to try the beef on weck and German Potato Salad. Â The roll was the first thing I noticed, it wasn't the standard run of the mill bulk roll you get at Tops, it was either home made or specially made for this place, because I've never seen a roll like this. Â Not too much salt, tons of seeds, light and airy. Â The roast beef itself was amazing, realy juicy and perfectly cooked. The flavor of the German Potato Salad was great, my only nitpick would be that they we're slightly undercooked. Â I'm actually not really into sauerkraut and most German type food, but I think I may grow a set and give some of the other dishes a try. Â Prices were very reasonable, and the service was funny and engaging. Â I plan on going back very soon for food.
Review Source:I was in Rochester for business and had a few days off so drove to buffalo. Â Ulrich's was on my list of places I must go...a List that included: Anchor, Duff's and Niagara Falls. Â What a disappointment. Â The crowd was very local which was great but the bartender was a little too wrapped up with his local friends to pay attention to his job. Â Eventually got my first beer and opened a tab. Â Finished beer one, watched the bartender go out and smoke a few times and eventually got my second beer (it took so long that he realized it had taken way too long to even acknowledge me that the second beer was on the house.) Â Now, I realize that some places have limited glassware so you don;t get a fresh glass everytime you order a beer and I'm fine with that when you order the same beer. Â However, when you order one thing (and there's still some left in the glass) and then order something different and they use the same glass? Â Cmon... Then when I got my bill, he did comp me my second beer but charged more for the first than he originally told me. Â Would have stuck around for more drinks but after it took so long for the 2, I was finished with this place.
It's really unfortunate because this doesn't seem to be the typical experience and I had really high hopes for this place because of it's history, I was really intrigued and that's why it was on my list. Â I would love to say I will try this place again, but I will most likely never be back in Buffalo and if I am, I probably won't bother based on this experience.
On the upside, it sounds like the food here is great and it is def a cozy little bar and I would love to have had that experience but it was what it was :(
Easy to overlook, in fact it took me over a year to make my first visit despite living only 3 blocks away.  The best bet for lunch is to order the 3 cakes and sausage order for $10.95.  Whether you pick applesauce or sour cream on your potato cakes, you can't go wrong and sausage is the perfect complement.  As one would expect from a German restaurant, the  draft beer selection is solid with both local and German choices available.
Review Source:Ulrich's is a Buffalo legend. It's the oldest or longest something and it's somehow both German and Irish. But more importantly, the food is delicious. There are a lot of items ending in "Schnitzel" on the menu. I sampled the potato pancakes, which were yummy, but not quite as good as Scharf's. I had heard that the French onion soup was not to be missed. It was picture-perfect with bubbling, warm cheese (Swiss), but I found the soup itself to be rather bland. I'm glad I tried it, but will skip it next time.
For my entree I had the Rouladen special (beef rolls with pickle, bacon and onion inside) and a side of spaetzle. It was mouth-wateringly good, and I wish I had a plate of it in front of me right now.
The atmosphere was cozy, the wait staff attentive and knowledgeable. Overall, a great meal!
I'll admit, I don't know a whole lot about German food. Â The more I learn, however, the more I like it. Â That being said, my first and best experience with German food has been at Ulrich's Tavern.
As far as I know (and I didn't pay a lot of attention in History class), not a lot of places in the U.S. can claim to have been open for over 140 years. Â Ulrich's can. Â It survived the entirety of The Prohibition as well as all the fiscal and political upheaval through the years in Buffalo. Â When I went there today, they actually even had a little paper about the history of the place. Â So I won't bore you with all of it. Â Just make sure you read it when you go there.
Ulrich's itself isn't much to look at from the outside. Â Situated a block from Buffalo's downtown medical campus, it's pretty easy to overlook if you don't know it's there. Â As soon as you step in, however, you can just feel that you're in a place with History (yes, with a capital 'H').
The food is good, across the board. Â Everything from their soups, salads, appetizers, German, and American fare is worth trying. Â Not everyone eats meat or sausages (even I'm not sure if they wholly qualify sometimes), but even the non-German food is good. Â Mind you, they do sausages and they do them well, but I'm just saying you can go there and enjoy a very good soup/salad/desert. Â That being said, get their sausage sandwich. Â Or, if it's on the special's board that day, their pastrami/reuben. Â That with their german potato salad is a lunch made in heaven.
Oh, and then there's the beer. Â The Germans know their beer. Â The first time I had a doppelbock, it was here. Â They are now my most beloved of beers. Â They always have something good and new on draft and the bartender and most of the servers can suggest something to fit your tastes. Â If you order a Bud or a Miller here, you're just missing the point.
The only thing that kind of irks me about the place is that the kitchen can be REALLY slow sometimes. Â Now, this isn't a problem if, like me, you go there with a book, grab a beer, and are content to wait for your food (especially because it's worth it). Â And it's understandable that it takes some time, as their kitchen is about the size of a generous bathroom. Â Just go there expecting a little bit of a wait for the food, especially around lunch time.
