This place has an artsy-hipster vibe to it, and is pretty dark and cramped on the inside, but for some reason it really works for the velvet lounge. Good music, and cheap drinks complete the scene. It's a chill, low key spot to hang.

Big, big fan. Some days they have free food (sun and monday i think). Live music.

I go to this bar, its not a lounge, whenever its nice out and I'm in a good mood to pay $5 for a cover. $5 for a bar in the middle of nowhere that's the size of my hallway in my house?? That's another story, but I do enjoy coming here for the outside and socializing with my friends. The beer selection is great and reasonable price. The bartenders are helpful when trying to decided the right beer. The acoustics for a live band suck in this place since its so small. The crowd is mixed, but you usually get people in the high 20's. Good place, but unnecessary cover brings it down to a 3 star

    Live music!

A friend of a friend was playing at the Velvet Lounge and we trooped over there to see what it was all about.

The place is located in front part of the building that houses the Curry Club restaurant - and that is where all similarity ends.  This is a semi-sorta hipster place but since they are LI hipsters, they are kind of tame and smell less offensive than their NY brethren...

The place is small on the inside- long and narrow is the best way to explain the layout.  Bartenders are decent and as mentioned elsewhere, the prices are sweet.  Good beer selection to choose from and we didn't get  clubbed over the head for drinks.

The night we were there had three bands playing.  The first guys up were a awesome rockabilly group with our friends following up with a lot of 80's and up tunes.  The third group was a bit more speed metal so we headed outside and grabbed a table.

The outside seating is casual- apparently there used to be a tiki set-up out there but it looked like it was no longer in use.

Cool group of people all around and yes, there is a $5 cover for whatever reason but $5 / 3 bands = cheap.

    Parking all around the place.

This place in comfortable and serves a great drink.  Small and cozy, crowded sometimes, but has an outdoor patio that is much larger than the bar itself.  There are outdoor heaters to extend the season, tables and benches.  Live music is eclectic, the last time I was there the band was playing some very nice jazz fusion. Usually a $5 cover. The crowd is mixed - locals, college students, hipsters of all ages, and generally friendly.  Bartenders are attentive and don't skimp.

Great laid back atmosphere.  My favorite place to go when I just want to chill out, especially in warm weather.   Plus there's karaoke on Thursday nights.

So my friends and I have a love-hate relationship with the Velvet Lounge.  We used to be ALL about this place a few years ago.  We never missed a Thursday night - the place was always packed, people were surprisingly friendly, and the karayoke selection was great.  The crowd was mostly made up of Stonybrook students, locals and a collection of hipsters.  Bartenders and bouncers were nice - never had a problem.  These days we don't go to the Lounge much, it's become "our last resort".  The scene has become more hipster and I feel like there's always the same reggae band performing whenever I make an appearance.  Michael P.'s review is right on:  It's a nice place to go in the warm weather because the patio is much more spacious than the bar itself.  Even though it's a very small place, the decor inside is awesome - retro, alternative, artsy.  Alot of the artwork is actually done by local artist in the area.  I don't recommend  going there solo; people aren't there to socialize outside their group.  But if you're down for a low key evening with a small group of friends - Lounge is for you.  Definitely NOT a stereotypical Long Island bar. Yes, the $5 cover totally sucks but the drinks prices are great.  And they have a large assortment of beers available.

Good during the summer and brisk nights when there is a fire outside, but not good when it is raining or absolutely freezing.  The bar area is very small so if the outside is not open, it is not very good.  Think about the crowd here as "starbucks at night"  Pretty much hipsters or wanna be hipsters, but distinct from the typical guidos with blowout haircuts on LI.  The beer selection is fantastic, and they are very reasonably priced ($4 for any beer pretty much with interesting choices on tap and in bottles)  $5 cover which is wack, but overall not bad.  Much better than the restaurant that shares space with it.  If you are not into the artsy/hipster crowd like me, you may not like it here, but overall pretty good place, and not like other places where fights are breaking out and meatheads rein supreme.

I can't pinpoint this place. It has live music and comfortable "velvet" couches but attracts a mixed crowd. Some young kids who don't care about the atmosphere and some people who are there FOR the live music. There is a cover which is also kind of annoying. I like to go to this place to sit and hang out with friends on nights when it isn't too crowded.
