My daughter, grandson and I wanted to have dinner at a nice place. So, as usual I went to Yelp to look for places to go since we are not from this area. Well, Yelp did not steer us wrong - dinner was fantastic. We arrived without a reservation, and my grandson is three. They could have just said "oops, too bad", but they didn't. They went out of their way to make us feel welcome. I had the trout, my daughter had the chicken and waffles, and my grandson had the mac and cheese. Starters were onion rings and bibb salads. Everything was tasty, perfectly cooked, generously portioned. Our server was very friendly and professional. And just when you couldn't think it could get any better, we decided to order the ice cream sampler. Yummo!! The ice cream was creamy rich, fresh - wonderful! This was the best dining experience I have had in a long while.
Review Source:We were very pleased with our dinner here a couple evenings ago.The chef is creative & all of our dishes were quite tasty; there's hardcore use of fresh local ingredients. We weren't blown away, and didn't expect to be; but there certainly is talented thinking & execution in the kitchen.
The place was packed & the service was slow. Our waitress (a co-owner, with her husband) compensated for this (without us issuing any complaints) by dropping our drinks from the tab. The bathroom facilities could withstand an upgrade.
If we lived in the area, we'd be regular visitors.
My girlfriend and I stopped in Boone after a day driving the Blue Ridge Pkwy. Â We had no reservation, but a couple of spots were available at the bar, which really does look straight into the kitchen area. Â We got to watch people slicing strawberries for salads and such right in front of us. Â The chef was a bit of a character, with his jammy bottoms and apron.
We ordered a Blind Squirrel beer that they recommended - a quad, I think (my GF is the beer connoisseur/snob). Â It was OK, but not head-turning. Â And we got the onion rings as an appetizer, which were very good and more than we could finish. Â I ordered a rabbit special, and she had the meatloaf. Â So far so good. Â And then eventually the food arrived...
It was OK. Â And *just* OK. Â The rabbit was a bit dry and tough. Â It came with a couple of dumplings that we agreed had lots of flavors rolling around, but was missing something - sort of like music with lots of treble notes that needs some bass to hold it down. Â (If I knew what it needed I would probably be a chef, or at least a decent cook...) Â The sauces for both dishes were very sweet, to the point of being overwhelming. Â This was particularly true of the meatloaf, which I thought was a bit bland, but more than a tiny touch of the dried bing cherry "catsup" completely covered what flavor there was. Â The Mac&cheese that came with the meatloaf was very tasty.
Overall: meh. Â We'd give it about 2.5-3 stars based on lack of "wow" in the entrees. Â The next time we're in town we'll try something else.
This is a lovely restaurant with great food. Although it looks fancy and the food they serve is top notch, they are not snobby.
We had the fried okra, the strawberry salad, a burger and the ice cream sampler. Everything was wonderful. The fried okra was perfect, and not at all greasy. It had a good amount of flavoring so it had a bit of a kick but not too much. The strawberry salad was tasty. The strawberries had a ton of flavor, the dressing was wonderful, and it had just enough cheese. The burger came with two huge onion rings on top and the waitress was nice enough to bring out two extra napkins. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the burger and was thankful for the extra napkins. The french fries that came with the burger were great, and came with a good dusting of pepper and sea salt. YUM!!
The ice cream sampler was delicious. It came with cinnamon, chocolate chip, and olive oil blood orange ice creams. The olive oil blood orange ice cream was shockingly good. The portions of the ice cream were very generous.
Unfortunately, they only have one veggie entree on the menu, raviolis. However, they have lots of veggie sides, appetizers and salads, and you can make a good veggie meal out of these if you are not in the mood for pasta.
I have traveled a lot (US, Europe) and make a point to eat at the best restaurants I can find when I'm traveling. Â I gave Vidalia a try on 6/1/13. Â I can honestly say their porcini and truffle ravioli with pecans and fresh greens is one of the 5 best dishes I have ever had the pleasure of eating. Â Hands down, in my opinion it was perfect in every way. Â My girlfriend had their meatloaf and mac and cheese which was absolutely delicious, the meatloaf was so good! Â I also loved the Caesar salad and that they will add anchovies to it upon request! Â Their onion rings are really good as well, loved the spicy dipping sauce! Â They had deep fried oreo's with vanilla ice cream for dessert. AMAZING! I thought it would be like state fair food, I was wrong. Â They made fried oreo's a high end dessert and they were excellent. Good wine selection! Overall one of the best places I have been to in a long time. I would recommend reservations, the dining room is small, but very relaxing. Their prices are extremely reasonable for the quality of food. Â Most entrees are under 20 bucks.
Review Source:Fantastic restaurant right in downtown Boone! Â We were here this past weekend and sat right at the bar. Â Our Innkeeper at the Mast Farm Inn had recommended this place (since we were staying at the Inn and were eating there the next night). Â
It is a small space but was completely booked the night we went. Â If you sit at the bar you can see straight into the open kitchen. Â It is so interesting to watch the chefs work. Â
I had the chicken and waffles and it was a gourmet take on the dish. Â Two quarters of Belgian waffles, one large piece of very light and crispy chicken and greens. Â Simply fantastic!!!! Â The boyfriend had seared tuna - also fantastic. Â We chatted with the friendly chefs and the friendly patrons. Â
Great evening - can't wait to be back every time we are in Boone!!!
Vidalia is nothing to cry about (corny onion joke reference)! Â Girlfriend and I were recommended to come here to grab dinner while in Boone and what a great recommendation it was. Â You know when you walk in and they are full with reservations that says a lot about the place.
We agreed to a spot at the bar facing the kitchen and took our seats. Â The waitress was very pleasant and recommended a few dishes. Â One, the chicken and waffles and the other the seared tuna on a bed of cole slaw. Â Sounds simple right? Â Well it was anything but, it was the most delictable peice of fried chicken I've tasted in quite some time. Â And the waffle was light and fluffy. Â The tuna was no joke as well, it was presented beautifully on a square plate with scattered drizzle on a colorful bed of cole slaw.
The interior was pretty small but that fed into the coziness of the place. Â They have a solid beer/wine selection too.
Quaint setting, well-thought menu. Beef Short Ribs with slaw and home-made mac-n-cheese was the perfect combination of gourmet and down home. Understaffed but friendliness made up for it and after all, it isn't usually the staff's fault.
Sit at the bar and watch the line chefs do their thing. These guys moved like clockwork and were a fun to witness while waiting for my food.
Wine list left a little to be desired but at least they had some local NC Cab Franc for people that are looking for something a little more unique. I'd go again next time I'm in town.
We go here all the time, and have never had a bad experience. I'm really surprised at the negative reviews, as I think this is one of the best restaurants in the region. Lack of flavor? Wow. Not in my opinion.
The real star at Vidalia is the Sunday brunch. Amazing.
Don't let the negative reviews put you off. It sounds like a couple of bad nights. Vidalia is well worth the money (and it's not very expensive for a nice meal out - $15-22 entrees).
Not a great experience for the cost. The wait staff was incredibly rude, arguing about tables and gossiping about customers just feet from the other tables. They did not have a separate hostess and the waitresses were visibly stressed trying to keep up their tables and seat guests. One waitress was irritated with a customer calling to inquire about their availability and stood next to our table arguing with the customer, throwing the phone down in anger on a desk when she hung up. The food was simply okay, with a lack of seasoning and overcooked meat. We were disappointed in both the service and meal.
Review Source:Vidalia's is a true gem in downtown Boone, NC. Excellent wine selection, and although I didn't have dinner, just reading the menu was enough to convince me to come back. The wait staff is that rare combination - gracious, friendly, efficient and a pleasure to interact with. Cannot go wrong for a nice dinner or a glass of fine wine choosing Vidalia's...
Review Source:My husband is a rock climber and therefore likes the Boone area. After spending a day watching him on the boulders, we wandered to the downtown Boone area in hopes of finding a halfway decent restaurant.
Don't you just love it when you think a restaurant experience is just going to be an okay experience and then it turns out to be totally awesome? That's what happened the other night at Vidalia.
Vidalia offered a cozy, intimate, and well designed atmosphere. The wine list was decent (and the wine list prices were outstanding). The food was both delicious and interesting. Service was outstanding. They were busy and it was obvious that our server was the only one on the floor, doing just about everything (but I think she was the owner and I'm pretty sure her husband was the chef - which is awesome because it's great to support a local family business with serious skill).
We started with crab cakes (fresh, delicious, perfect portion) and a house salad. (We were going to just order a salad from the menu, but our server let us know that they are gigantic and that they have a more appropriate appetizer sized salad - I LOVE when servers do this because they're really looking out for the guest's dining experience and not trying to gauge anyone).
My husband had the butternut squash ravioli with fried sage on top. I took our server's recommendation for a daily special and got their take on chicken and dumplings (gnocchi - my favorite). It was incredible - flavorful, perfect texture, and not too heavy despite a somewhat creamy sauce.
Although we were too full for dessert, we ordered the grilled bread pudding (topped with smoked bacon) anyway and loved it. The only thing I would change about it would be to add a little bit of ice cream or fresh whipped cream (which I could have asked for and they most likely would have had it, but like I mentioned - we were super full and satisfied).
Vidalia is overall awesome and we both highly recommend dining there.
BEST FRIED CHICKEN EVER!!!!! Â My family and I were vacationing in Boone and read the reviews for Vidalia (which were excellent). Â I ordered the chicken and waffles and my husband had the pork shanks. Â Words cannot describe how absolutely amazing their fried chicken was. Â It was the best I'd ever had. Â My husband loved his pork as well. Â The place is quaint and the staff is very friendly. Â I highly recommend this restaurant. Â The quality of the food is outstanding and the prices are very reasonable. Â You won 't be disappointed.
Review Source:My girlfriend and I were in Boone just for a few days of sight seeing the weekend after Thanksgiving. Â We found Vidalia as we browsed around downtown and decided to setup a reservation for the next evening. Â It's a good thing we did because this restaurant was very popular. Â
Overall this is a five star review for me because the food, wine and service were all very good. Â We started with a nice medium priced bottle of wine from Chile and followed that with an order of the Chicken and Waffles and a Filet Mignon. Â We ended the meal with and incredible pumpkin cake. Â Also, the server was very knowledgeable of the dishes, made some good recommendations and provided us with just the right amount of attention. Â Highly recommend Vidalia !
We just love this place! After driving through Boone looking for a place to enjoy dinner, we found Vidalia's. We were seated overlooking the food prep area which was very interesting to watch. The chef cooked the food to perfection while the sous chefs knew exactly what to do. The food was spectacular. The hostess and wait staff hustled to deliver the food and drinks promptly and with charming courtesy. Â This restaurant is truely a diamond in the rough in downtown Boone. We highly recommend this restaurant. You will not be disappointed!
Review Source:One of my favorite restaurants in the area. Â They have a great Sunday brunch, great coffee and wonderful service!! Â The restaurant is small so reservations are important especially in the high season. Â Try the pancakes for breakfast, the pimento dip for a dinner appetizer and then I usually go for one of the fresh specials. I have never had a anything but a fabulous meal. Â A true hidden Gem in beautiful Boone, NC
Review Source:Vidalia is not my cup of tea. Â The mac 'n gouda cheese is delicious, but beyond that, I have struggled to enjoy it.
The green beans lack seasoning, the smashed sweet potatoes lack flavor (which is so hard to lack with sweet potatoes). Â
I've had both the fish (which also lacked seasoning) and fried shrimp (which was decent). Â
The service never seems to be up to speed either, but that usually doesn't bother me too much. Â All I am saying is, don't expect prompt service.
On the whole, I can go back if the group wants to go, but I never expect much, especially given the price.
Wow, what a meal. Â We had early reservations, and were the first to be seated this evening. Â We were the first to experience the wow. Â I'm not normally one to go for a "fancy" or "froo-froo" menu and specials, but boy did they show me wrong tonight.
We had one of their special appetizers of fresh organic tomatoes, fresh mozzarella cheese, a vinaigrette dressing, garnished with blue basil. Â Wow, just divine.
We had their tenderloin of beef in a rich wine sauce, served over smashed potatoes done just right, and a side of steamed, organic broccolini like I have never had before. Â They topped it off with thick vidalia onion rings, fried super crispy in a great breading. Â Wow, just amazing.
For dessert, we decided to split the dark chocolate torte, which was served with fresh blueberries and strawberries, and all drizzled with chocolate ganauche. Â Wow, quite rich. Â However, they mentioned a 2nd dessert of chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwich drizzled with caramel and chocolate sauces. Â Yes, I didn't want the Wow to end, so I ordered a second dessert and ate it too. Â I didn't share the second one with my husband, but instead just loved the thick, fresh, homemade chocolate chip cookies. Â
The restaurant is small, quaint, elegant, and superb. Â The service was excellent. Â We felt very taken care of from start to finish.
