We went here for dinner, and the food was pretty disappointing. We ordered soups and one of the Danish specialties called Biksemad, which is chopped steak with a German sauce, mashed potatoes, and some kind of pickled red cabbage.
The pea soup was pretty good. The soup of the day was so salty as to be nearly unpalatable. The plate overall was very bland, with the exception being the pickled red cabbage, which I thought was delicious. It was also the only thing not listed as part of the dish though, and was just a side.
Service was fine, but I would definitely avoid this place. There are a lot of better options all around town.
yikes.. Â kind of open all hours... drink our beer, and order one of the various foods we offer...we are not selling you anything that tastes good because we are trying to be English, Mexican, German and who knows what else kind of a place. Â Â Give it up.. its a place to beer and sausages... Â don't do Mexican food, even if you have a Mexican chef...he can't prepare anything really that great..
bring the kids.. they will love it..
if you do go..drink the beer...  bahhhh  ...  honestly..its a 2 star place..that extra clean, hence the 3rd star.
We accidentally found this place when my kids were playing inside the red the phone booth. The place is ok. I don't remember my order but it was pretty good. The sirloin, potato, onion, mashed potato and gravy. My daughter ordered meatball and mashed potato, the meatball wasn't hot, the inside were cool, not even warm. Beer was good too. One thing that I don't like, the bathroom was dirty.
Review Source:I've been to the Viking Garden a few times when visiting Solvang during the annual Greyhound reunion. They are very dog friendly, allowing dogs on the outdoor patio, or if it is chilly or rainy, inside at the other enclosed patio area.
The staff has been friendly and even bring water for our dogs. I like their fish and chips special and usually pair it with a nice specialty draft root beer.
The Aebleskivers are a little darker and heavier than others I've had but they are still very good. They give a side of apple sauce with them which I had not seen at other places.
All in all a nice place to eat.
This restaurant has been our favorite for several years now and not because we havent enjoyed other restaurants in the area.  Jose and the other two waiters that we always seem to get....are so sweet and professional. We bring our little dog who bothers no one and the food is remarkably good. Even their hamburgers rival places we frequent for their quality back home.  Flavorful, fresh and homemade- all of it.  Nice portions and the service is unobtrusive but always there if and when you need them.  You feel cared for.  They also have their own menu for large groups---which I noticed that day sounded delicious and looked yummy.  It is in a garden near the wine shop and even if it rains, you are covered nicely.  I loved their Sauvignon Blanc b(Gainey Winery) and I usually dont care for white wines but it went with my menu.  Patio dining  (and indoor) casual but if you want good service, really good homemade food (even Mexican) its here you can get replenished and feel like the food was made by your favorite aunt and all is fresh.  Love this place - and come every time we stop in Solvang.
Review Source:We were there on Chridtmas Day 2012 and this was the ONLY place open in town. The place was packed with Japanese tourists. My wife's burger was good but my schnitzel was dry as shoe leather. The house dark beer was good, Overall I would pass on this place and try one of the other higher rated places.
Review Source:Came with a <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Frestaurant.com&s=c5fe485af4df376130bee54f875814d79c4d7913e1258123b1206d2bdbf4873b" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://restaurant.com</a> certificate and ordered the double bacon burger (no bun, no cheese). Â The hub had a chef salad and pea soup. Â Everything was just ok. Â The service was a bit slow given we were one of maybe three tables in the whole restaurant. Â Ok if you want a solid meal that won't break the bank while wine tasting in Solvang.
Review Source:Good Nordic style food, but not too pricey either. Nice selection of meat/seafood/sausage/meatball based entries. The fish was fresh and tasty, the mashed potato was yummy, too. We had a outdoor seating and really enjoyed a warm, beautiful noon with great food. I'd probably go back here again if I'm in Solvang ever again.
Review Source:i agree with the 3 starts given by the majority of the other reviewers. Â the food was ok; not the best food i've ever had, but not terrible either. Â hubby got the sausage sampler ( i forget what the dish was called), my 10 year-old got the little viking's swedish meatballs and mashed potatoes, and i got the schnitzel. we saw the mexican and american food options on the menu, but wanted to try something we've never had before. the mashed potato was heavy, but not bad. Â i did think the food was a bit overpriced, but there's a 10% off coupon, which is what made us try it out in the first place. Â the service was great. the server was prompt, attentive and very nice. overall, i think we'll probably return if we find another coupon.
Review Source:I liked the Viking Garden. Â It is a tiny little place tucked behind a shopping center in Solvang. Â And yes, it may be a little unusual to have a Mexican/Scandinavian combination restaurant, but I bet Vikings would have loved burritos and tequila if they were offered to them.
What this restaurant does have to offer is outdoor seating and great prices. Â They have a coupon on <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2FRestaurant.com&s=0aab4cbd731f3d3b0d1453050d3abc56a8c80bd214e25469c7555b750dca8a51" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://Restaurant.com</a> and the prices are cheap anyway. Â Solvang is not great for fine dining anyway, so eat here and spend more money on wine.
If they are still are couponing I Â will definitely be back.
Other than the sauerkraut beig extremely salty to the point of where I couldn't eat it anymore, the food was ok. Â
I think their lemonade should be called Lime-ade as it was way sour than just lemons..n it tasted like Lime anyway...still tasked ok.
The service was ok...not the best that a server could offer. Â He told me no one has complained about the saltiness of the sauerkraut when he even knew how salty it was. Â I've been to Columbus, OH's German Village (Sausage Haus) and their sauerkraut was "normal".
The good part of the place is that there is a nice outside area with umbrellas where patrons can enjoy the outside weather while eating some food.
Overall, I gave 3 stars because of the sauerkraut and the fact that they said that is how it tastes and they don't plan on changing it. Â And the server telling me that other places that I've had sauerkraut at, make it wrong or different.
I probably won't stop by again as I don't know when I'll be back in the area and if I am in the area, I will try something else this time.
After Yelping and finally landing on an Italian restaurant (Cecco Ristorante) on 1st St, my aunts tell me they didn't feel like Italian -___- We walked for a few minutes and finally settled on this restaurant. I didn't have a chance to Yelp because my peeps were starving. I didn't see the reviews until I finally checked in.
I had my dog with me and I knew I wasn't going to be able to eat inside, but the waiter said there was an indoor patio on the other side of the restaurant :) We walked over and it sheltered us from the fierce winds and the cold breeze. And best thing, my dog could eat with us!
Regardless, I still didn't let the reviews bias my lunch. I ordered a tuna melt (I know it had nothing to do with the restaurant, but It was what I was craving for at the time) with french fries. Eh, it was nothing to rave about. It was kind of dry. My mom had the Danish lunch that included a Danish sausage, which tasted okay. My aunt had a German sausage and I was not impressed. Costco hot dogs tastes much better. My cousin ordered a double open faced burger topped with bacon strips--YUM!! She's a stick figure, but she somehow fit it in her stomach.
Service was great: she was friendly, cheery even for the gloomy weather, and attentive :)
We wandered around looking for a bar on a Sunday afternoon in Solvang and came across this low-key divey place. Â They offer a BEER SAMPLER for less than $6! Â Check out the wooden carrier. Â They only have one though (it's really just for presentation). Â You can ask to swap out any of the selections for some other beer on draft.
Review Source:We went here for lunch on a recent trip to Solvang and and needed a place with some outdoor seating so we could eat with the dogs. Â Viking Garden fit the bill pretty nicely and we were seated outside. Â They have a pretty good beer selection and there are quite a few food choices on their menu. Â I got the skewered sausage combo, which was pretty good and had an unusual variation of sausages on it. Â I Â got the platter that had a potato pancake and some sauerkraut. Â The sausages were OK, but none of them were overly flavorful and it was kind of hard to tell some of them apart. Â The platter was also kind of expensive, but I guess on par for Solvang. Â Next time I'm in town I may have to try one of the other restaurants.
Review Source:Stopped by Solvang heading down from SF to LA.
Read about Vikings dining, so headed on over to first restaurant I spotted in midst of Solvang. It was fairly empty upon entrance but within next hour, the restaurant filled up quickly.
Ordered the meatballs, but didn't get red cabbage :-/ so I stole off from other plate. Hahahar works for me. Food was O-K not great, but it wasn't bad. Some of the meatballs were still abit cold, but the gravy was warm so I didn't complain.
If you are in the mood to feel arrgghhhhh- (impersonation for a viking?)
head on over to vikings for some meatballs and beer!
I will redeem you Viking Garden! Â My friends and I stopped by after a starvation-filled afternoon of Ostrichland and Miniature Ponies. Â Collectively we ordered the Swedish Meatballs (better than Ikea), the Polish Sausage (nice and snappy), and the Reuben. Â We demolished all of it. Â It could've been cuter seeing as how it was in Solvang, but judging by the barflies and the Last Supper-esque Viking mural on the wall... it's just not that kind of place.
Review Source:It was alright.
Pros:
* Â Open past 6pm
* Â Decent food - I liked the bratwurst & knockwurst
* Â Decent service - there were only a few people at the bar watching the Laker game
* Â Fantastic viking decor - it's a bit over the top, but I thought it was funny.
Cons:
* Â Price - way too high for food that's only 'decent'
* Â Location - it's sort of hidden, so it's no surprise they had to hike up their prices
* Â The name of the place is a bit deceiving - I don't think vikings ate quesadillas or spaghetti. Â The menu is broad, which is fine I guess, just unexpected. Â I actually like German sausage better than Danish so that worked out.
I never realized this place was here, it's kind of behind some storefronts. I got the knock wurst and bratwurst plate and my girlfriend got a fish sandwich. The service was acceptable. The food was really good. My girlfriends fish sandwich was fresh and looked really tasty. My sausage plate was good. The potato pancake left something to be desired but, the sauerkraut and the sausages were very tasty. My only complaint is about the prices. I paid 14 dollars for 2 sausages, some sauerkraut, and a potato pancake. The atmosphere was more greasy spoon than gourmet, which also did not reflect the price. It is also worth mentioning that we did not get drink refills until the end of our meal due to a bus of tourists storming the building.
Review Source:Went to Viking Garden Restaurant on Christmas Day and it was one of only 6 or 7 restaurants that were open and only 1 or 3 with a decent review. Â The reviews were pretty accurate. Â The service was decent. Exceptional for Christmas Day though. I ordered the hot turkey and swiss on Pumpernickel. It wasn't really anything special but just ok. It was kind of bland and very dry. It was simply meat, cheese and bread. I had to add mustard to moisten it up and I had to request onions for extra flavor. But not the worst place I've ever eaten at. So I would recommend this establishment when not much else is open or if only the Mustard Seed is open.
Review Source:The bottom line is that this place just not that great. It's not bad, but it's nothing to get excited about either. If you are looking for traditional Danish cuisine, go somewhere else. The majority of the appetizer menu is made up of quesedillas and there are more "American" choices on the menu than European fare. The final nail in the coffin for The Viking Garden is that the prices are WAY too high for the quality of the food. Save some money and go somewhere else.
Review Source:This place was perfect for a no frills breakfast. Â My stomach was paying the price for my sins from the day before, so I didn't want to overdo it with Danish delights. Â It was close to our timeshare, and we didn't feel like waiting at Paula's again, so this was perfect for our group.
It's a little off the main strip, and the only reason I found it was because we had woken up early and decided to take an early morning walk, and I heard the folk music playing in the beer garden.
We had great service, and I noticed the draft beer selection to be impressive, although my liver was still on strike from the day before, so I didn't partake. Â That, and it was 9:30am. Â
I definitely recommend for anyone looking for a good quick breakfast. Â The food was fresh and tasty. Â I will be back when I'm in town, since it's so convenient to where we stay when we are in town.
One of the only few places to go to that is open of dinner. I'm glad we went here since the food prices were reasonable. I got the sausage kabobs that consisted of brats and store kielbasas. They were ok.
Potato pancake was good with a side of applesauce. It was just ok...what was I really expecting From the Danish anyways but meat and potatoes. I'm glad we didn't waste our money on bit of Denmark or angelica's cafe.
We should have just ate at subways or dominos.
This restaurant is hidden. Â You can't see it from the street. Â We found it wandering around. Â We sat outside on a small, wooden park-bench style table. Â We shared a plate of 2 sausages (Sicilian and Polish). Â The Sicilian sausage was not spicy at all (per menu description). Â The Polish sausage was good. Â Service was okay. Nothing special.
Review Source:I won't even lie: I came here the night before the Solvang century ride and our options were pretty slim.
You really can't complain about $9 all you can eat spaghetti and meatballs.
It was very average but very affordable.
I'd go back if I was hungry, which I was. I went through 4 rounds of spaghetti.
Our original dinner plan was to eat at Bit o' Denmark (<a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz/bit-o-denmark-solvang">http://www.yelp.com/biz/…</a>), but one thing after another went wrong; between their lack of draft beer, the items we wanted to order not being available, the family next to us complaining loudly about their dinner, and the generally poor service for the brief time we were there, we decided to leave and go elsewhere. We came across the Viking Garden and the menu looked OK, so we decided to go for it. There was both indoor and outdoor seating, but we decided to sit outside and enjoy the pleasant evening air. Being a tavern, it had a very good draft beer selection relative to some of the other places in town. We got a pitcher of Carlsberg so that Erik could get his lager fix. The menu includes Danish, German, American, and Mexican food. Laina got a German pork chop, I got a Danish pork tenderloin plate, and Erik got a sausage plate. Everything was pretty good, and service was decent as well.
