Great home cooked food and well priced. Â We too were weary about giving this place a try even though seemed to get a good deal of business. Â My son asked to go there every time we passed, so one time I gave in and we gave it a try. Â We really enjoyed the home cooked food. Â I returned a week later with the whole family. Â We also ordered a tray of their cobbler for a family event and our guests raved. Â
If you're looking for ambiance this is not your place, but if you looking for good food at a good price this is your place. Â Give the cobbler a try...heated with ice cream on top. Â Be prepared. Â The last time we were there they did not take credit/debit cards.
The Good: Cheap Cheap Cheap prices. Almost everything is made from scratch.
The Bad: Small portion size. Some items a little bland.
I have to come clean... I've lived about a mile from this restaurant for almost 4 years and was always a little scared to venture into the joint, but at the same time always intrigued that it stayed open and there were often cars in the parking lot. From the outside it looks like a hole with flecked paint, random debris, and all kinds of other oddities adjacent to the building, but inside is a small clean friendly establishment.
After entering around lunch time we met Tom (the owner/owners' son) and he was quick to great us and chat about the history of the place and their recent 25th year in business milestone. A very full menu was offered with many home cooked type favorites at rather affordable prices.
I ordered meatloaf with gravy, mashed potatoes, and mac & cheese. My friend ordered the lunch special (just $5.00) of pan fried flounder and sides of green beans and mac & cheese. We were both pleasantly surprised with the quality of flavor of the meal. My meatloaf was a tad over cooked and a bit bland but smothered in a tasty gravy so I quickly wolfed it down. The mac & cheese was especially flavorful. My friend enjoyed his mac & cheese as well and was very pleased with the quality and flavor of the flounder.
The only complaint that either of us really had at this point was that we were both still hungry. We thought of ordering another meal and splitting it, but instead decided to try some of the homemade pies. He went for a slice of pumpkin with some whipped cream on top while I choose the hot cherry pie. I'm not a big dessert eater, but the cherry pie was tasty and delicious and the pumpkin was average.
Overall a good meal and a place I intend to visit again and try some of their breakfast food. If possible I would give this 3.5 stars, but it was good enough to get rounded up to 4. Don't let the rough exterior fool you, stop by and I think you will be as pleasantly surprised as I was.
David D's review is spot on. Â I myself, took pause to trying Ward's also, but now am regretting several years worth of missed meals.
Ward's menu offers a nice breakfast, lunch and dinner selection.
I was torn between breakfast or lunch when we arrived, and went for the Fried Flounder Special. Â I was braced for my flounder to hit a deep fryer, but when I got my plate, I was pleasantly surprised to see a pefectly skillet fried fillet, from someone who has obviously done it many times before.
One of the true winners for me today was an option to get a biscuit with my lunch, thinking I could only have one with breakfast. Â Oh man, what a perfectly flaky and tasty biscuit Ward's has to offer. Â I now want a couple of those with their homemade sausage gravy on my next visit.
The owner visited our table at the end of our meal, and reminded us that his Mother, the founder of the restaurant taught them three things to offer people, "Friendly service, great home cooking, and prices that will bring them back."
Yeah, they have all three of those for sure.
