I hate to give them such a low grade after I had a nice lunch there a few months back but they opened a stall at the Bayview Farmer's market and so I tried a Bon Minh (?) Vietnamese style sandwich and it was very dissappointing: very dry Gai's like French bread, vegies not sliced or shredded thin enough and wafer thin slices of BBQ pork with little or no sauce or spread. I took one bite, then took it back to their stand.
I didn't want to embarrass the owner in front of others so I left it on the back table. A $7.00 lesson - for me and I hope for her.
A good sandwich has shredded vegies, plenty of sauce or spread, noticeable meat and a soft bread interior with a crusty outside. I'll stick to Pickle's version at Ken's Corner even though the best are still found in Seattle.
Sigh...
Wish I could rate Whidbey Rice higher, since I love to support small, locally-owned business, but I find their prices very high for both the quality and quantity of food provided, as well as for the atmosphere. Â $8.25 for a banh mi sandwich??? Â Come on, the food is being served in a little shack on the side of the highway on Whidbey here, not in the lobby of some fancy hotel. Â Curries and noodle dishes all clock in around the $9-$10 range too - again too high considering what you get. Â
Food is on the bland side and sadly, nothing special. Â Weird hours, too - lately they've been open Tues - Fri 11-3. Â Yep, that's it. Â
I don't think we'll be back.
