Best soul food in NWA!
Great atmosphere, quick service, and delicious meals (and desserts). Â The chicken fried steak, ribs, and necks bones are my favorites, and the ice-box cakes and bread pudding are to die for. Â The sweet tea is a special recipe with a fruity flavor that tastes great. Â Reasonable prices and a visit from Wilma to check on the food makes it a great visit every time. Â You feel like family every time you go -- even if it's your first visit.
Momma Dean's is good soul food, but Wilma's is great soul food.
Also, the restaurant recently moved to a cozier location on College Avenue just North of Evelyn Hills Shopping Center. Â I'm not sure of the address, but it's on the East side of the street about a block North of the VA hospital, but before you get to Sycamore.
We went after church and I was hoping for brunch fare. They only have a lunch/dinner menu so we went for the burgers. Â It was a blast from my past as the hand-formed patties reminded me of homemade family burgers from my childhood. Â Ordered the mac and cheese as well to get a glimpse of the southern flavor and found myself trying to doctor it up with salt and pepper. Â We'd go back if we had a craving for burgers and to support local business.
Review Source:I went there on a Saturday night and it was basically empty. The restaurant was very basic. It almost looked like the owner bought 2nd hand furniture to decorate the restaurant.
My boyfriend and I were trying to catch a movie in an hour and half and we told the waiter that to make sure the meal didn't take too long. It turns out our food took over an hour to prepare. We didn't order anything special, just meatloaf and catfish, and there were only 2 tables ahead of us. I think Wilma was the only one cooking. The food was basic southern food, not bad but nothing special. The sweet tea, Â Wilma's own recipe, tasted like Tang.
I would not recommend this place to anyone. I think there are other southern restaurants in the area that would be worth your time.
Ms. Wilma comes out and checks how you want your food, and if you don't like it, she wants it back so she can find something else you might like better. Â We didn't send anything back for sure. Â I had chicken and dressing, black-eyed peas, and corn bread. Â I also had mac-n-cheese that came with my meal, but that ended up going to my youngest toddler. Â There is no way I could have stuffed that in too!
Nothing greasy. Â Cornbread was just sweet enough. Â Southern cookin' at it's best.
