We ate here tonight after my sister's graduation, and out of the eight people in our party, the majority had a good experience.
First off, our server was really sweet and was quite knowledgable about the food and wine. However, the service itself was hit and miss. We had some empty water glasses for a while. But on the other hand, when we had an issue with one of our cocktails, she gladly removed it from our bill.
As for the food, it was mostly good. My husband and I split the Shiitake Mushrooms 3 Ways, which was a custard, a pate and a ceviche. They were so different but went together perfectly. The pate was extremely savory with garlic and onion, and the custard and ceviche actually worked best when it was eaten together.
I ordered a couple of small plates for my meal - the beef tips in a sherry cream and the coconut curry scallops. Beef tips were great. The sauce was really great. Exactly what you'd want in a cream sauce. The scallops were cooked perfectly, but the sauce was overpowering. If you are on the fence about curry, I don't know if this would be the dish for you.
My husband had the duck, and he loved it.
Would have loved to try their dessert menu, but we brought in our own graduation cake. Maybe next time, since I'm sure we'll be back.
My second time at the Wine Cellar & Bistro didn't quite deliver - was expecting a repeat of an amazing visit about a year and a half ago and it was fine this time but not quite as unique/special the second time around. Â Great wine list but overpriced entrees. Â We only had two glasses of wine for the entire table and our bill was over $200 for a party of four. Â If the food would have been over the top wonderful or if our waiter would have paid attention to us AT ALL it wouldn't have bothered me at that price point but ..... meha - probably not going back soon. Â Oh, well, I sort of lied, our waiter DID pay a lot of attention to us (too much and somewhat intrusive into our table conversation) for the last five minutes before he brought us our check. Â Where in the "restaurant employee handbook" does it say to neglect your guests/patrons for 2 hours and then get all gushy friendly for the last 5 minutes to work up a good gratuity?
Anyway, good enough for a three star!
Visited during our weekly "date night". Â As a couple, spending more than $100 on dinner, I have much different expectations of service than we were given. Â The food was unusual but not all that tasty. Â Considering the prices, I was expecting something really, really good, but it was just OK. Â The wine selection is excellent and the waiter reluctantly helped us select a really good one, after we found that our first selection of wine was on the menu, but not available.
There were five occupied tables for most of our 2-hour dinner, with two wait-staff. Â Considering the fairly slow night, our waiter was amazingly inattentive. Â He would leave to get something (e.g. dessert menu, bread and butter, wine list) and be gone an amazingly long time. Â He dumped our food on the table and disappeared ... etc. Â We sat at our table for at least 15 minutes with nothing but water when we first got there.
Delicious but pricey food. Staff very friendly. Â Atmosphere is nice too.
Like most nice restaurants in college towns, I didn't feel uncomfortable showing up casual in jeans.
I've been twice and maybe they were normally slow nights, but I was surprised to find that the place was dead empty. Â Great for getting top notch service and quick food to the table, but not great for a business trying to make it. Hope those nights were just flukes.
Really like this place. Ive been twice, once on a date and then brought a group for my birthday dinner. Both times the food was fantastic, I love the low lighting and setup they have. Great wine as well. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is our server could have been more friendly and helpful, she didn't seem very dedicated to the menu or our needs.
Review Source:This place is very good. Â I would give it 5 stars if it were a little more affordable. Â
The atmosphere is cozy and romantic. Â The lighting is low. Â I've never seen this place busy, which can be a plus if you want some privacy.
My wife and I had dinner here. Â Very fancy stuff. Â Jasmine duck and whatnot. Â I can't remember exactly what we had, but it was exotic and delicious. Â The plating and presentation are excellent too. Â They also have a nice variety of wine (of course) and beer. Â Service is very good.
Take your sweety on a date here.
I stopped by the Wine Cellar, a cool, little spot in the heart of downtown Columbia, to meet a friend of mine. For lunch, I settled on a  meatloaf sandwich, portabello mushroom soup, and a green salad. Unfortunately, since I had a depo in St. Louis at 4, I didn't get a chance to try out any of the wines here.  The meatloaf sandwich was pretty good, the mushroom soup was decent, and the green salad was forgettable.  All in all, an average meal.
