Difficult to Spot... But Good to Find...
Drinks were crappy, but the food is actually pretty decent.
While the interior is sketchy and needs to look less like a VFW Hall... the seats are okay, and the menu (while limited)... kicks the hec out of what comes out of the Schaumburg Improv's kitchen... for about 25% less in price.
BTW: Aisha Tyler was amazing... she did a full hour of naturally amazing and humorous comedy without seeming contrived or rehearsed at all. LOVE her!!!
This club gets a 4 star for the comedy. Â The lamest comedian I saw here was uncle lar, but because he doesn't appeal to my humor side. Â But, he does appeal to others and I wont knock a comedy club for having one lame duck.
I like the hosts of the Vernon Hills venue - they have always been quite funny. Â Zanies Vernon Hills sometimes raffles away tickets for free when they have extras for an upcoming show - only catch is you have to buy 2 menu items. Â That's free entertainment, and that is ok by me. Â Make no mistake, the decor is outdated but amusing. Â The facility is clean. Â They have a decent selection of food and drink and their staff is friendly.
Drinks are completely over priced. Â The beer special last time I was there was $8.50... that's for one 12oz draft beer. Â So with a two drink minimum, and average ticket price of $30, with tax and tip, you're out around $50 to $60 a person for a mediocre night of comedy and a slight buzz.
My suggestion, only go if its someone you really want to see. Â Everyone once and a while they'll get a decent comedian, not just some hack that was once on a sitcom or did a three minute stint on Leno. Â But that is rare, most of the local comedians here just plain suck and a lot of the bigger names are comedians that were edgy ten years ago, but are a little washed up these days. Â
By the way, the comedians enter from the back of the club, so if you want an autograph walk around to the back side of the building and you'll see the rear door :)
If you're looking for good edgy comedy, check out Chicago Underground Comedy, or the Lincoln Lodge.
We went to Zanies not long ago to see a comic that I can't remember her name but she was on Chelsea Lately so I wanted to see her. My husband and I got to the club at 9:00pm when the doors opened and got front row seating. The club slowly filled up and we ordered a round of drinks and waited. The drinks came out rather slowly but I didnt think anything of it till halfway through the show I wanted another but our waitress was no where...I saw other sections waitresses but not ours...FInally she appeared and at that point Ijust wanted a diet coke...20 mintues later I get it WTF!!! its just a coke! When it was time to leave you Have to pay and get this little stub that says you fufilled the two drink requirment...and that took forever. Bonus they gave everyone 4 free tickets when you left. I say the comedy was good the service not so much.
Review Source:It may not look like much but the Zanies in Vernon Hills is a pretty nice place. They have good comedians come in, a big room with a lot of seating, and the ticket prices are never too high. Last time I was there, I got to see my favorite comic, Jimmy Pardo. It was hilarious show. The opener and the middle were funny as well. We had perfect seats in the second row of chairs, not right on top of the stage but close enough to see everything. My only problem was with the waitstaff. There were like 4 or 5 of them and only 30 to 35 people in the club, yet they acted like they were swamped and it took forever for us get our bill, pay, and leave.
