I'll never step foot in here again! I will also do whatever I can to make sure this place doesn't get frequented by anyone I know!
1. Bartender/Owner complete bitch!
2. Promotion girls were there doing here job, one of them gets her chest and ass grabbed by some loser, Â the weak ass "bouncer" does nothing!
Tall, bald, muscle bound, tattooed asshole grabbed one of the girls, and his fat, idiot friend grabbed her ass!
I'll see you around boys! Watch yourselves...
I'm guessing this is the only dive bar in town since we always go here when I come to visit. Â But my friend hasn't suggested anywhere else in MV to go to for drinks. Â
But anyways it's an okay dive bar with pool tables and video games. Â Wish they had a dart board then I'd give them the 4 stars. Â
Each time I come there is one really cute brunette bartender and then another older cute brunette bartender. Â Both are really nice and are attentive even if there is a big crowd there. Â
Watch out though seems like the Mill Valley police just sit out in front of this bar waiting to get the locals. Â There were like 4 parked near the place this past friday night.
I am very conflicted with this review, on the one hand I have the majority of my first visit with many positive bullet points. Staff was friendly, patrons were lively and pleasant and prices were reasonable. The  three star rating begins after my intention to leave. I visited the men's room and my god, I hope my nose can forget the scent. It was, without a shadow of a doubt, the worst smelling men's room I have ever been in.  This is no exaggeration, that smell was wrong on so many levels. So after I stepped out, after feeling my nose and brain were brutally assaulted I met back up with my buddy whom was there with. He proceeded to introduce me to the  owner who was standing next to him. After the required pleasantries I informed her, " you have to do something about that bathroom" ...maybe not the the best thing to say but give me a break, my nose just got raped. So she just walks away an her friend proceeds to berate me for being some sort of stuck up, pretentious person. My whole argument is based solely on cleanliness. If you own a business that serves people drinks or food , your space needs to be clean, every place...kitchen, bar, dining area, bathrooms...etc. I know that bathroom has not seen a good cleaning in far too long.  At this point, if I was the owner, I would rip up the floor and re- tile, sand the walls and put a new coat of paint on and replace the urinal and toilet. This work needs to be done. I hate writing negative reviews but this experience demanded it! Again, drinks were good, atmosphere was enjoyable and the staff and prices were great. That bathroom...seriously...so freaking bad.
Review Source:It's a dive bar...It has a great selection of beer. Â Excellent drinks. Great Happy Hour. Great and knowledgeable bartenders and the prices are the most reasonable in Mill Valley.
There are flat screens all over the bar where you can catch most sporting events. Â Overall theres no real downside to the place at all and it's a great place to just come hang out.
This place ROCKS I lost my wallet and called the next morning they had it at the bar cash and EVERYTHING untouched! Great crowd, unpretentious, the lemon drop shots are awesome, roller ball bowling was sooo much fun as well as the hunting game all BTW hidden from the noise of the main part of the bar so you can concentrate on your shot... the guy who I played pool with was such a gentleman and kept the game very even at great lengths (I suck) GREAT time had by all a must if in Mill Valley.
Review Source:When I go to the 2am, I go to have fun. The first staff I run into is Mike, who is always professional and has security on lock. The bartenders are friendly and ID everyone in the younger looking crowds. The pool tables are in good condition and there are always full chalk cones and plenty of chalk lying around.
My favorite bar... ever.
After growing up in Mill Valley and hearing about the 2am club for years, I finally checked it out on a return trip home after graduating from college. Â
The 2am club is everything I had hoped for. Â I didn't go to school in Marin, but I still ran into people I knew. Â My buddies and I made friends with the bar tender who was awesome and took care of our drink needs all night. Â It was a very eclectic group in the bar with all ages, sizes, styles, etc. Â I had such a good time that I returned a few nights later with my girlfriend and was greeted warmly by the bartender who I had made friends with the last time. Â It made me feel like I was in an episode of Cheers.
This is a great home-town bar. Â Plus it has the cache of being a bar where music legends used to hang out. Â Definitely worth checking out.
I have been passing by the 2am club since I was young so I knew I had to go here once I was 21. I came here on a Wednesday night with a friend since we didn't have anything better to do but hang out with some locals at a bar. It was an interesting experience and definitely what I expected from a local bar.
I feel like this bar is a lot more fun for people watching than to come here for a few drinks. There are a lot of interesting characters - Â for instance a couple in their mid-30s who couldn't resist from pinching each others' butts to a guy in his late 20s who kept waving at us like he was doing a magic trick. But other than them, most of the crowd was a bunch of laidback middle aged people who seemed to be regulars.
The bar itself is pretty cool. Everything is set up really nicely and there's a menu with all their selections. Each day serves a special drink. Also, everything is decently priced and a lot cheaper than bars in SF or elsewhere. On the downside, one of the bartenders was really rude to my friend and I. I guess we seemed young so she rechecked to see if we had been stamped, then proceeded to linger around us. She literally stayed near us the whole time while other customers were elsewhere.
I feel like this would be a fun hangout with a group of friends who just wanted to chill and play pool. Maybe I will be going back to the Deuce...
We have driven by here many times and finally decided to try it this last vacation the week before July 4. While this is a dive bar, it offers much. What I like is that the locals hang here, and this means mostly over 30s. Yay! Â
My bf and I were both happy with the tap selection. I ordered Lagunitas IPA which was fresh and delicious. BF was ecstatic when he saw they had Widmer Heffeweisen on tap. The only real drawback was that everytime he ordered a "Widmer" the bartender corrected him and said, "One Widmere," turning it into a long "e." Â Now then, I have always heard it pronounced "Widmer" and my English degree tells me it is NOT a long "e" but no biggy. My bf loved the place more than I did. I thought a lot of the men were rude and loud, but they were playing pool and I was watching. I could have moved.
We met a couple of lifelong Mill Valley residents, and they were great, especially Bruce! Â We will most definitely return next time we are in Marin. Truly something you should try at least once to say you did.
Love the Deuce! Â (As referred to by regular patrons.) Best local dive bar in Mill Valley.
Here's why:
- Low key when the Giants aren't playing Or during the week which I love
- If you want to watch a game, they have several big screen TVs scattered throughout the bar
- Cool bartenders
- Pool tables if you get bored watching the game
- A "fancy" jukebox
- Joe's Tacos is right next door so if you get hungry, you can quickly order food to take back and return to your game watching and boozing without wasting time. Â How convenient and efficient!
I used to like this place, it kinda went downhill..it used to be a guys' guy type of bar complete with a "Dirty Harry" pinball machine and everything. Now it's kind of set up like a nightclub or something. The people are younger and stupider and I'm older and crankier and this place just isn't as cool as it used to be..
Review Source:There's something about the inviting smell of stale beer and disinfectant and the familiar lights of the pinball machine in the back that can make me uniquely joyful.
The 2am club is stumbling distance from my parents' home and that is just how I like it. Â I'd say I make it down here maybe once a month and every time I come, I end up having a fantastic random time.
Sometimes I'll run into some kid I haven't seen since I transfered out of MV public schools in 5th grade.
Another times an old man will buy me and my friends drinks and say, "You don't have to talk to me or anything, I just want to encourage pretty girls to come here."
Then once we met the MV fire chief and fire department and an evening of fire related puns ensued.
Another time bestie and I asked the cute blonde girl bartender for something tasty with Malibu (I know, I know, but it was just that kind of night.) Â "Like surfers on acid?" She asked us. Â "Uhhh ok..." we eloquently replied. Â And 2 delicious $7 jager filled booze-laden cocktails later we were 2/3 of the way to a blackout and couldn't have been happier about it.
Good times. Â Every time.
Also, the last time I was there (and I don't come in that often,) the bartender recognized me, said "You come in here often, don't you! Â Great to see you again." Â And then when the $15 credit card maximum had the best of me that night, he only charged me for what I drank even though I told him he could charge me off the maximum.
Another time I left my credit card (I know, I know, irresponsible...) This was the night where I ended up with numbers in my phone with such colorful descriptions as "cute, perhaps retarded," Â and "ok to hang out with on a week night," and when I came in to pick it up, I found out they hadn't tipped the staff 20% automatically when they closed my tab. Â (Which I think it would be totally reasonable to do,) and so I left a cash tip and the bartender actually thanked me the next time I came in instead of being mad that I had been too belig to close my tab.
(Caveat: Â This ringing endorsement does not apply to Thanksgiving or Christmas week, when my former classmates take it over and you might as well be at Bus Stop in the Marina. Â But that isn't the 2am Club's fault and it probably keeps them in business so 5 stars anyway.)
when visiting a friend in mill valley i had an amazing time drinking here with her. this place is your typical bar with pool tables, tv's, and a significant number of regulars (can i call them townies, or is mill valley too big and too close to san fran for this?) Â =). Â the place is moderately priced and just has an overall good energy. if i ever find myself in mill valley again i will make it a point to stop by to this place where nobody knows my name but treats me like they do. i should note that i tried anchor steam here for the first time and it's delicious.
on a side note my friend and i went with her parents and we had left to get something to eat next door when we came back there were two guys siting in our seats were talking to her parents. when they saw my friend they made a comment that was not appropriate to make to a girl's father. the situation was like something out of a movie.
A local favorite! The Duece is Mill Valley's version of a dive bar - it's really hard to leave here sober - the Blow Jobs are good. Â During the holidays, this becomes somewhat of a high school reunion - it can get pretty hilarious. Â
Tip: if you park your car over night, get it early the next morning, before you're ticketed or towed!
ok, Nathan, you win. sometimes.
It has been brought to my attention that my review is out-of-date.
This is a fact that herein will be remedied.
The Deuce now has Dirty Hairy pinball, which as far as we could tell, works just fine (though it does have an awfully sensitive tilt).
dirty. hairy. balls.
do you feel lucky, punk?
well, do ya?
"Do you like Huey Lewis and the News?"
"Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercial and artistically." ~ Patrick Bateman. The cover for "Sports" was shot here.
Do you like to play pinball? Â They have a pretty cool "Dirty Harry" pinball machine... I sucked ass, but it was fun to play.
Do you like jukeboxes? Â Yes, they have one.
Do you like pool tables? Yes, they have a few of those too.
Do you like TV? Â Yes, they have lots of those too. Flatscreens, in fact.
Do you like dogs wandering about a bar? Yes? Too bad. They have lots of signs around the joint which read "NO Dogs or Bikes allowed".
Me... I like dogs and hate bikers - you know the kind that think they own the road AND sidewalk too. Â
Anyway, I was ever so pleased that the nice bartender let a pooch come in. Â I fell in love that day, and I think the dog liked me too.
Oh, and the old man procured a 2 am shirt for me... Yes, I do like Huey Lewis and the News.
While we were neither in da club, nor was it 2 in da morn, we did have an ok time at the 2am Club. +1 for the poo table, +1 for not being crowded and minus a few for skunky beer. We had some beer the old tap and it was almost questionable. We had a few drinks here whilst or cohorts played pool. I think this place would be much more fun on a weekend. I will have to try it out!
Review Source:I think being listed as a dive bar is inaccurate - this place has far more in common with a sports bar. For one thing, it's entirely too clean, nicely-lit, and well-maintained for a dive. In fact, the only nod to "dive" that I saw was the fact that the bathroom doors don't lock.
The bar selection is broad, with several taps, and a helpful sign above listing offerings and very reasonable prices. The bartender was very friendly and we all had a great time chatting, shooting coin-op pool, playing a couple pinball games, and watching football on the wall-mounted TVs.
3.5-star-worthy in my book. They have photo hunt (yay!), a pool table, and cheap ($5?) wine. Also, it's nice to have at least one bar option in Mill Valley.
However, the crowd is VERY random because, after all, who really goes out in Mill Valley?... I don't think a name like 2 AM Club would really work anywhere else. It's an accomplishment to not get bored/sleepy here before 2 AM...
When I first moved to MV I thought the 2AM was really out of place, but its really not and thank goodness there's ONE BAR in Mill Valley that's not also an Italian restaurant.  There are a handful of regulars I always see smoking right outside the door  - I love seeing them there, its such a familliar comforting sight.  The bar adds some flavor to our otherwise boring yuppie neighborhood.  There's darts, pool, a digital (internet?) jukebox, and daily drink specials.  Its a great place to watch the game on Sunday mornings, but it smells kind of gross in there so I wouldn't advise that if you're hung over at all.  No food for sale aside from bags of chips, but you can bring food in from Joe's next door.
Review Source:Update: Â The 2AM is closed for the next 2 months while liquor licenses are sorted out, as it is changing ownership. Â The very good news is that Amanda, one of the bartenders, is now a partner. She's got some good ideas to keep it in the spirit of the old club, but it's gonna get cleaned up big time. It'd be great to see the fireplace in use, and expose more of the coolness of the building itself. I think it's gonna be an improvement, without being a totally new spot. The following is the old review-
The 2AM club holds the distinction of being the last bar (other than restaurant bar) to survive in mill valley. Â Previously, it had been considered the most divey of the other bars, and maybe it is that toughness that has kept it alive. Â
The bartenders are a really good lot. Â They pour a strong drink, so be careful on that count, if that's not what you're looking for. Â The beer selection is typical, and not very inspiring. Â The prices of the beers are comparable to many places in the city, meaning you'll find drinks for a lot less at a comparable dive bar, and a lot more at a more swanky place.
The Juke Box use to be fun before it was an internet one, but this one seems to be set on the mediocre setting, meaning, if your a big fan of eighties hair bands, you'll probably find stuff you like. Â You can find cool stuff, but it seldom changes and as far as new releases, you better be the type that get's excited when Britney Spears has a new c.d. out, or you'll mostly be sh** out of luck. It also cost a lot to hear the songs...
The atmosphere must have been cool when the likes of Jack Kerouac hung out here. Another couple more years of peeling paint, and you might actually be able to see how it looked then. Â It has what looked like a very cool fireplace, but it got painted, then covered over, and then a big t.v. was put on it....so much for coolness....A sand blaster would go a long way to improving the decor.
That said, I go fairly often, as there are a lot of nice people who'll show up there, Â and the staff are the salt of the earth. If there was another cool spot, I'd probably go there, and take the staff with me.
This place is an enigma, wrapped in a connundrum, dipped in a shot of Jack Daniels. Â If it were'nt for the fact that my wife grew up in MV & spent a good portion of her misspent youth here I probably would have never known about it. Â Wait, yeah I would have.
This place is a B A R. Â Order a blended drink & prepare to have the jukebox stop playing mid-song, beer taps will freeze in mid-pour & you might have time to throw yourself out before someone else does. Â Ambiance?? Â Who the fuck cares! Â Just make sure you park on a side street for your depart home or do like the locals do & cab or walk your ass home.
My biggest gripe, every time I go to piss in the men's room I get to stare at pictures of my father in law in their murals from the 70's. Â Hint, he's the big, scary looking guy with long hair, beard & crazy eyes. Â No that OTHER guy with the long hair, beard...
Sorry Merritt!
The 2am club is an old school sports dive bar in the middle of Mill Valley. Â The crowd isn't your typical downtown Mill Valley establishment, but it's a good change of pace if you're in the mooed to get back to your college pub roots.
Get place for a beer and watching the game. Â The staff is friendly and the crowd usually is pretty laid back. Â I'm a Dallas Cowboys fan, but the 49er and Raiders crowds didn't give me a hard time. Â Good fun ribbing, it's all good. Â
Darts and pool tables are available. Â They have a good assortment of beers. Â Good spot to throw back a few suds.
There are not many choices for bars in Mill Valley. The deuce is it. Especially since the sweetwater closed. It's a bar... it has normal priced drinks, tv's for watching sport games, a pool table (which is always in use), a few tables, and of course no dive bar would be complete without the jukebox in the corner (so you can pick your music).
Review Source:Dive bars in Mill Valley? I hear that they can't even play live music after 9pm due to the neighbors complaints. But then Rockridge actually shut down a bar for playing live music and no bar can play music live anywhere on College Avenue. I just happened to stop in here on my way home from the Fall Arts Festival and I was not impressed by the bar locals either. One person deigned to speak to me and everyone else just ignored that I sat in the same place for over an hour. No worries because I have no time for dive bar snobs anyway and the band was good enough to sit through and drinks were relatively cheap.
Review Source:Poor Deuce. Â It gets a pretty bad rap here. Â I know that the Bay area has a plethora of delightful venues where you can meet-and-greet, and be entertained and delighted in various ways, but that doesn't mean that the Duece doesn't serve its purpose. Â This is definitely a bar, a opposed to an amusement park or a social club. Â Call me old school, but I tend to judge a bar on the level of safety, the prices, and the drink options, and in all categories, this place delivers. Â No one tried to rob me or feel me up, and that's pretty much all I look for in a bar crowd. Â As an added bonus, they have televisions, pool tables and a juke box, and are open late. Â Go there, take your friends, watch some sports; it'll be fun.
Review Source:The 2am Club's clientele really sucks. I mean, by and large they are really horrible, loathsome people... And I can say that because I am a smug snob that grew up in Marin.
All of that aside, the Bar really isn't that bad. Drinks aren't overpriced, they have some good beer on tap, and the bartenders are generally friendly and polite. Good central location in Mill Valley.
I probably won't find myself here ever again, considering I don't live in Marin, nor do would I intentionally go here when there are better options elsewhere. It's a dive, try it out if you find yourself needing a drink in Mill Valley, but don't expect more than that.
If your 'peak' was when you went to high school in Marin and never escaped that same high school mindset or moved on, you'll probably love your like minded company at the 2am Club.
Go elsewhere in Mill Valley to be seen, come to the Deuce to get drunk and play pool. The only dive bar in Mill Valley is the most fun to hang out because they have seen it all and so has my cat.
Yes my cat has been inside the bar, twice (what can I say he followed me and they did not card him either.)
They had a makeover about a year ago due to the floods and it was about time, the carpets were really bad, but now it is nice and a bit sporty with a few TVs and sports always on. They have Karaoke occasionally which can be a blast and once a year they have a pig roast and live music.
Drinks are good, beer selection is good and no attitude. It is right on the main street of town, so take a cab or walk here. Look for my cat!
I just returned from my first weekend in Mill Valley, land of wonder and amazement.
My first trip 'out' in Mill Valley was to 'the duce'. I was warned that this was one of the dive bars in town and not to expect much... Well, I got what I expected.
Let's see, first off, the coolest part of the bar is that this is where the photo on the cover of the Huey Lewis record 'sports' was taken... If that is the coolest part you can imagine what must have not met the paltry 'cool' expression.
First off the lights were very bright. It was night outside and felt like I could get a sunburn in this place. Â The drinks were over priced for the atmosphere, I guess in Main county I can expect this. The drunks and locals were ok and the bartender left us alone. Â My only other gripe would be the taste in music that the other patrons had, pretty terrible.
Would I come back?
Sure.
Am I aching to come back?
No.
The deuce.
sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name...
and if that's the case (and you went to Tam), head here, STAT.
Otherwise it can be awkward seeing all those home-for-thanksgiving-never-wanted-to-see-you-Âagain kids from high school.
Its always interesting to see who is hanging out.
Say you're stuck in Marin and there is a televised sporting event you absolutely need to watch. Â To be more specific, say your significant other and crew are camping in Marin the night before the World Cup final, and they tell you a couple hours before game time to come to Mill Valley to watch the game there. Â An odd request, it strikes you, esp as you drive through the Inner Richmond and think of all the places there one could enjoyably watch a soccer match.
So you rendezvous in MV's ever so quaint town square, where you might reasonably expect that there would be a bar with some TVs on. Â But the only option you would find there is a much too fancy italian restaurant which is SRO, with the kind of people you expect to be hanging out around Mill Valley's town square.
After 15 minutes of standing near the entrance to the kitchen, although the food does look good, the crew decides that this is not going to work for viewing the most important soccer match. Â Somehow information filters through that there is real bar down the road a mile or two--2AM Club to the rescue. Â Many televisions, many bar stools and table, many Budweisers and Bloodys...
In sum: I wouldn't go there for a night out on the town, but if you do find yourself in such a situation...
I used to think that Mill Valley was entirely populated by the newly wed or nearly dead, but a recent trip to the 2AM club showed me that I was mistaken. Â
Evidently there is a significant population of Frat boys and the women who associate with them in MV.
Â
Yes, college party culture seems to be flourishing at the 2AM club, they even serve all of the drinks in a plastic cups just like you would get at a kegger - oh, not all the drinks, thats right, they serve shots in paper dixie cups. Â
No, I am not kidding. Â They serve shots in paper dixie cups.
You know the cover of that Huey Lewis and the News record with the band hanging out in a bar? The album with " I want a new Drug" on it? That bar is the 2 AM Club! Â If there is classic rock on the jukebox, Â Liz behind the bar, who accepts joints as tips (wink wink), will do shots with you.
Review Source:If you find yourself in Mill Valley itching for a game of pool or just a cold beer, head to "the deuce" as my wife, who was raised there (in Mill Valley, not the bar), informs me it is called by locals. Â The 2 AM is a classic divey roadhouse bar with a couple of nice pool tables, a dartboard, and a few TVs playing sports. Â It's an island of Old Mill Valley (which my wife informs me was "funky") afloat in a swelling sea of New Mill Valley (boutiques selling designer candles and soap). Â Patrons are a mix of young, Marin outdoorsy types and old-timers clutching their drinks at the bar.
