The bartender, Travis, was really good. Suggested interesting shots. Funny.

We came to Denton for lunch, I brought my oldest to MacDaddy for Mac and Cheese and the middle child to The Abbey due to the reviews on the Internet for their French Onion Soup.

Let me tell you, both she and I were disappointed. The cup of soup was only filled halfway with what I guess was 1 or 2 ounces of liquid. To top it off, the broth was plain (seemed to be missing a spice) and the onion and "homemade" croutons really had no flavor.

I guess my search for French Onion Soup in Denton is over and a failure :(

My friends and I came here for dinner, and I thought it was pretty good.  I had a lamb tzatziki wrap with a side of peas and onions with mint.  I liked it, but the wrap was essentially a tortilla, and I'm used to eating something like this on pita bread.  Just a little preference.  It was still tasty, but not something I'd likely order again.  One friend had the gaelic steak and the other had the salmon, and both were really good.  We were all a fan of the brussel sprouts with cranberries, which they had as a side.  If I check it out again, I'll probably order that steak.  Yum!

I love the traditional British menu - cottage pie, bangers and mash, fish & chips, etc.  They have a good beer selection and, as previously noted, the beer is served very cold. They have a few UK themed cocktails that are worth trying - the English & Irish mojitos are particularly good.

Wesley was awful. I'm a server myself and I understand the business but seriously. Just write down the order. He gave my girlfriend a caesar salad wrap instead of a salmon wrap to a pescaterian. He did not even apologize to any of us. Food was okay but not worth the service. Will not be going back.

A don't miss on Denton Square.  The food was spot on and ohhhh soooo delicious!!  Everybody at the table had a different dish and all equally good. The beer was served cold and there was a good selection.  The wine list is OK.  The server was attentive, and  restaurant was clean.  The Abbey Inn has a lunch menu during the week, brunch on the weekends, and a dinner menu as well.  Never really been a big fan of the    restaurants on the square, but the Abbey Inn is a move in the right direction.

Sweet holy Lord, these are the best onion rings I've ever had in my life.

My wife ADORES the fish n' chips, the blue cheese burger is tasty and if you want a gastronomic explosion, get the monte cristo.  It is giant, fried and huge.  And also fried.  Oh my God, is it fried.  And massive.  And very wonderful, but please please please, don't eat it all by yourself.  SHARE.

Fresh, cold, good beer on tap and we've never had a problem with service or getting a seat, even on a Friday night.

Is it fancy? Nope.  But it's good quality pub fair and sometimes, that's exactly what you want.

Good to see that Denton restaurants and bars are getting savvier about serving beers other than bud light - and the Abbey Inn serves them up *cold*.    The food can be hit or miss, but when it's a hit it's pretty darn good.  I really enjoy the french onion soup and recently had a tasty lamb kabob style wrap.  My friend couldn't stop raving about the Fisherman's Stew.

This is a nice location right off the square, and a good place to come if you're strolling through the area on a nice day.  The Abbey manages to be charming and unique without screaming "college town."  (If you want college town flair, you can go downstairs to the Abbey Underground on a Saturday night for 80s and 90s dance music and bar scene.)

I always love the Abbey Inn for drinks because they serve their beer ice cold! So  so good. But this visit I went to brunch and oh my goodness -- I've been missing out! They have an amazing selection, and great mimosas to get you in the brunch mood. I had poached eggs and toast, but some friends had the full Scottish breakfast and it was divine. I really enjoyed myself!

Great British food, the most tender steak cooked perfectly. Amazing fish and chips too. Hustling and bustling place, can be a little loud at peak times. Our waiter was awesome!

Fantastic, good food, great beer selection, and such. Be sure to go on Wednesdays to see irish music masters County Rexford! My favorites are the Bangers and Mash & the Monte Cristo!

It's pub food, if you accept that, this place is great.  Fish and chips are solid.

So great! the booths are church pews just like in an Abbey! They have unbeatable menu selections. My boyfriend said the fish and chips were great! Also the beer is English style and served at 20 degrees Fahrenheit! It's so cold and delicious!

After a long absence from eating here, some friends talked me into going back.  I have to say that the new menu and changes that were made have turned this place around!  Great appetizers - Staff is super friendly, efficient, and service was spot on!

We just moved to the Dallas area about a year ago. The Abbey Inn is one of our favorites for sure! The decor makes you feel like you are actually in a British pub and the food is fantastic as well as the awesome staff! Located on the historical square in Denton, TX...you won't be disappointed with the Abbey Inn!

The Abbey Inn was one of the first places we hit up as soon as we got to Denton. After finding out we were from Austin, the bartender bro bs'ed with us for a good while.  It was happy hour and they have what's called the "Crown and Down" special.  Oh, it was special all right.  We sampled some Franconia Brewery beer here and he convinced us to go. Thanks Bro Dude!  We didn't try the food here, but heard many great things about it from several Dallas folks.

The Abbey is definitely a solid eating experience in the heart of Denton.  One of the best things going for it is the location.  Most of my experiences here have been positive, so that's what I'll build on.

The beer selection is excellent; in fact, it's one of the best in Denton while avoiding the crowd at Lou's or one of the smaller bars on the square.  I'd say that the beer is the best part of the bar.  Those wishing to have their beers served at more of a room temp only have to ask for a non-chilled glass.  While this does not completely match the experience of a good, warm beer, it helps.

The food here is pretty good too.  I wouldn't say it blows me away, but I don't leave feeling disappointed.  I generally stick to the Abbey Burger and pub chips.  Chips definitely feels like an understatement for what are more like potato wedges.  They are definitely delicious and if you feel like a starter, get the cheesy version.  While I've tried other dishes here from the Abbey Cottage Pie to the cheese ravioli, I definitely feel like the burger is the way to go.

Service here can be touch and go.  A few years ago, I had a waitress completely forget my meal.  Having said that, I do think that the service is a positive experience.  If you're looking for a drink and a good meal, The Abbey is a solid place to go.

Dentons culinary scene starts and ends with food trucks.  Dammit why
didnt we stop at the bacon truck with the $3 BLT?  No we had to try and look
for a real sit down restaurant in Denton's courthouse square.  Awkward.

Denton is a place for being stoned and for creative exploration at it's best for a twenty year old, so the restaurants come across with amateur, uninterested service,
and food that takes a backseat to cheap drinks.  Lets face it, going out to eat isn't a college kids priority, it's trumped by partying.

The Abbey has like a 30 foot ceiling, decor of a medieval castle, a fake British pub menu and for some reason is brightly lit and has bad acoustics.  Place was uncomfortably bright and loud on a Saturday night and it didn't help matters that
the Abbey started their first year on the 35 Denton music festival circuit; mid meal a band started playing in the basement.

The food was passable but kind of reminded me of a semi disappointing meal on a vacation that ends up somehow being comforting because you're just happy to eat in a Foreign town that has semi bad food and you feel victorious that you just happened to pick one of the best places thats offered.

My friend had fish and chips and I had the shepherds pie, both the waiters top picks,
which he seemed slow but careful to give.  The peas and onions seemed good if canned, the meat in my pie seemed like it was prepared by some college dude, a bad cut that he doctored well, the fried fish was rocking, the wine was bad, and the brussel sprouts side was good even though it looked unappetizingly monochromatically brown.

THE MUSIC WAS SO LOUD FROM THE BASEMENT THAT I COULDN'T HEAR MY FRIEND TALK! HUH?

Our tab was $50 for two with drinks which is a real splurge in a place like Denton,  but I have hope there is a well rounded restaurant in that county somewhere.

The service was really good.  Our waiter was not only helpful and nice but he was also easy on the eyes! ;)  The hostess though??  She needs to smile more.

The beer is cheap.  Why do I ever go down to Dallas??!  $3 for a pint y'all!!!!  My friend who lives in Deep Ellum was excited about the prices also.  If we were in drinking moods the night we came here, we'd be drunk for less than $10!!  Win win win!

I'm a new vegan and there was nothing on there for us except steamed veggies and their rosemary potatoes -- which I ordered.  For a vegetarian, there might have been 1 or 2 things that were friendly.  And that's if you're pro-cheese.  My friend had their steak and she gave it the thumbs up.

I don't think I'd come back here for the food but I'd definitely be back for a glass of beer.  You can't beat the alcohol prices in Denton.

It was a while back when I cam here so I don't remember much, but I do remember that I enjoyed my meal and my beer very much. The atmosphere was nice, a little hectic but that's to be expected at a popular place. I had the Gaelic steak, the one made with a full shot of whiskey. I would come back again, the prices are pretty decent as well.

Since someone from the restaurant responded to the review, I did go back briefly recently. The appeitizer I ordered was fine and the portion seemed right.  I didn't have any problem with the happy hour pricing being wrong and the woman who was there last time behind the bar was not there.  I did recognize the guy who was behind the bar from previous visits.  It seemed a lot better this time so I will try again some time.  It is a shame that the bar is not larger.  It is a marble top and nice but not many seats are available.

    It's OK.

It's a dark pub with somewhat slow service, decent pub grub and beer.

The only really bad thing is they have nice beers.

Why is that bad?  Because someone told them that these beers should be served COLD!  There is a large thermometer on the wall displaying the instantaneous temperature of the beer cooler.  It spends a lot of time in the upper 20's.  That's a great temperature for Bud, Miller or Coors.  If they get warmer than 32, you'll actually taste them, and that won't be good.

However, the point of good beers is to taste them, and I'd love it if they'd serve them at what the Brits call "cellar temperature".

I'm still looking for a great beer bar in Denton, and despite the good beer selection, this ain't it.

The Abbey Inn is a cute eatery on The Square. I ordered the calamari and it was really good and so was the sauce that came with it although the presentation was really pretty terrible. The prices are good and the service I received was incredible. It was great being able to trade info about upcoming shows each of us are in with each other and I hope to be able to catch our waitress' band soon. She was a real awesome chick.

The ambience is great, especially near the open windows facing the square on a summer's night.

I ordered the award winning fish and mussel soup. It was absolutely delicious in a tomato-based broth with 5 mussels, clams, and white fish. It was served with garlic-bread which could be made more garlicky and also be served on a separate plate to prevent sogginess. The soup truly tastes award winning.

I look forward to returning and trying other Brit favs including Bangers and Mash.

First time here and i was really happy with the selection of food.  I had the salmon which was pretty good.  The mash potatoes where awesome!!!  The only thing that i didn't really care for was the steamed veggies, they were bland and had almost no taste.  Fried pickles were pretty good!  Service was a little slow, but nothing really to complain about.  I'd say if your looking for something that is a bit different you should for sure check this place out.  Looks like they had a good selection of brews on tap as well.

The Abbey has come a long way and is a reliable staple on the Denton Square.  Having spent time abroad in actual Irish and Scottish pubs, this ain't it but is pretty darn good.  The Monte Cristo is phenomenal, as are the fish'n'chips and bangers and mash. The Scottish Eggs are a delight, even if the raspberry drizzle is counter-intuitive at first sight.  As others mention, the cold beer is divine BUT they do pour a room temp Guiness as the Lord intended.

Nice weather is especially great for lounging about the lovely square, and an Irish 3-piece sometimes entertain patrons with traditional songs. Good for kids, too, but gets pretty darn busy during peak hours these days.

We were on the hunt for a new place to get a burger (still pretty new in town so we're always trying new places) and when the place we going to go was closed we decided to try The Abbey Inn. I was a bit hesitant at first but am so glad I went inside.

The hostess situation isn't great as several employed had us wait for the hostess to show up but our waitress was great.

The set-up isn't amazing in the restaurant as a lamp post was blocking the TV and there were some cramped sections but the food made it all better.

The burgers we got were amazing and it was a hard decision since the menu had so many great options. I'd been told Sweetwater had the best burgers, or Rooster's etc and while they all had some good burgers this was by far the best cooked burgers we've had in town. I can't wait to go back and have some more of their great food.

My first experience at Abbey Inn I was like eh. Eh, except for one thing. This place has delicious, ice cold beer. They keep their tap at 27 degrees so there is little ice crystals floating on the top. O M G I love cold beer. They do $2 Ziegenbocks every day. Even though I wasn't that impressed with my first food order, I kept coming back for that damn beer. Over time, I've tried a good portion of the menu and I've become impressed with what they have to offer.

I like the nachos. They use good cheeses so its a little more gourmet and a little less bar food. I love the steak pasta and pub cheesy fries. The Monte Cristo is excellent and I love the sauce they serve it with. The desserts are amazing. Love the Guinness icecream.

Service here is always good. I love when it is nice weather and they open the windows. Try to get a seat by the windows so you can watch all the teenyboopers walk around the square. One thing about Abbey Inn is it seems to be an older crowd. I don't particularly mind this. I'm guessing the reason is because its a touch more gourmet and a touch more pricey than the $5 burger down the street.

I have been here several times by now and I will be back several times more. Overall the food isn't amazing but its better than the other bars in Denton. And now that I have been spoiled by the amazing 27 degree beer, I just can't settle for tepid beer stored in a cooler. I recommend going to Abbey Inn, having a draft beer and some pub cheesy fries!

    Yay!  Guinness on tap!
    Boo!  Learn to pour!

I had (from their website) The Aesthetic: Our Char-grilled Half pound Burger covered in bubbling Gorgonzola Cheese and crowned with
our Smoky Bacon. Plus a side of their beer battered onion rings.  Both were darn tasty.  No complaints.

The service was "ok" - nothing to really complain about and not worthy of high praise.

Having only been to this place once, I can honestly say that it was a really good experience.  The waitress basically asked if we needed anything every few minutes and was really friendly.  I ordered the English Dip, which is basically an au jou (how ever you spell it) sandwich that came with the beef dip.  The sandwich was filled with a ton of meat and it was as juicy as I've ever had.  I also had the english peas and onions and they compliments the meal really well.  All in all, I had this place at about 12 a night and the quality was definitely still there and I would definitely recommend this place.

Okay....don't try to fool me with wadded up tissue paper. It basically made an order of calamari turn into a half order with tissue paper at the bottom. No.
Why did I have to ask for the sauces it was supposed to come with. Don't give me a dumbass look when I ask for them, either.

My banger tasted like something from the meat department @ Kroger. Oh no.  Don't tell me you make that ish yourselves.

My companions had fish and chips and the cottage pie.  Both were pretty good but overpriced.  The fish and chips were supposed to come with peas but came with sauteed squash? what?

The decor was good, cheap lookin Irish pub but compared to other places I have been. It was okay.

I would go back for beer specials but not for the food.  Try a little harder, Abbeys.

After a particularly trying day dealing with complete and utter nonsense, my wonderful husband decided to take me on a sweet Sunday adventure to the Square in Denton to whisk me away from the unwanted pestering that had begun the day.

Unfortunately because it was Sunday, everywhere we wanted to go was closed.  So we trekked over to some place which name I cannot remember, but all they had was smoothies and some bagel sandwich type crap.  No thanks.

So we turn face and see the Abbey Inn, sparkling before our eyes.  Upon entry, the place was pretty sparse and I'm not sure why.  We sat in a lovely wooden booth amongst their meager yet perfectly decorated restaurant and I think I fell in love immediately.

Our waiter, Klinc (pronounced Link) asked what we would like to drink.  I made sure they make their own Bloody Marys and he asked me the correct question, "How spicy do you want it???"  I tell him I want it spicy enough that it doesn't burn my mouth... but spicy.  When he returned and I took a sip, it was perfect.

I kept with my theme of spicy for the day and ordered up the buffalo chicken sandwich with a side salad instead of fries.  My other option was a burger with gorgonzola smothered all over it, but I chose the latter, obviously.  My chicken was good, tasty and he gave me the perfect amount of bleu cheese (my fav!) and Andrew said his burger was good.

This Abbey is a pub, but more of a restaurant if you ask me.  They have pub appeal and décor, but it's not as cramped as you would expect a real pub to be.  The menu has the basics of what you would expect to find in England though, and that's good enough.

Klinc was super helpful and we had a good chat as well.  I found out he goes to Saints & Sinners as well, so I was excited to finally talk to someone that goes to my tattoo shop instead of people just asking me... where do you go???

All in all, the drinks, food, service and all around appeal of the place was just right for me.  And considering they were open on Sunday when no one else was, is a giant plus.

PS.  They serve food until midnight most nights, I believe.  Woo!!

As Denton bars go, the Abbey Inn is a good call for a relatively classy pint and some pub food. It's not the best I've ever had, but considering the other options in town, it's the best place I could think of to take my dad for a beer.

The tap selection is nice, and there are tons of bottled beers available. The fish and chips are tasty, though I think they're probably a dollar or two more expensive than they should be. Kudos are merited for having a very tasty vegetarian option (tofu curry with vegetables).

I ordered the scotch egg as my meal, and it wasn't the best I've had, but it was ok. The strange thing was that they drizzled raspberry sauce over the top of it. I noticed that a lot of the items on the menu had the same topping. It seemed kind of and odd mixture to me, and it didn't really add to the flavor of the scotch egg. Also this particular scotch egg is very deep fried and breaded, which I wasn't a fan of the breading.

Most of the other people we went with thought their food was decent (but pretty overpriced in my opinion). The waitress screwed up the order of a person I went with (brought him something completely different), and it just so happened to be his birthday. She put the correct order in, and he took it to go and ate the screwed up order anyway. So in the end, I suppose it all worked out. The service was pretty poor overall.

I haven't had any of the beer at the Abbey, but I've been told it's pretty much the standard imports for an American-English Pub. A co-worker of mine complains that they keep their Guinness ice cold, and that really bothers him, as it would many other Guinness drinkers.

Overall there are better places to eat/drink around the Square for the price you pay there. It tries to be a Pub with a lot of class, aesthetic dishes, quality food (not bar food), but ends up feeling overpriced for the flavor of the food.

If you like Ol' English Pubs that have the dingy, dank, old charm about them, this is not that pub.

I ordered the Mussels in some sort of beer sauce during one of my visits, the sauce was so salty that made my tongue became numb.

On top of not so great food experiences, i think some of their staff were definitely not trained properly. The first time we went, after we signed up for the "membership" the waiter totally forgot to return our driver licenses. We had to remind him right before we left. The second time we went, after we mentioned to the waitress that  the mussels dish were very salty, she went immediately on and changed the topic to tell us how great her mussels experiences were when she was in Europe. she had absolutely no basic manner to at least say  "sorry about the dish" before she left our table.

To be fare, this one STAR is for my appreciation of its good location and the Scottish Eggs, which actually is not bad.

I want so badly to like this place.  I live on the square and I was so excited to have a new resturant to frequent.  Unfortunately, I've given them four tries and have never had any luck.
The first time I went, they forgot to bring the sides with my dish.  To have a waitress serve you a plate with no sides on it is frustrating; how do you not notice that there's nothing on a plate before you take it out?
The second time was about the same.  Slow slow service and they weren't busy.  I got my dinner, then my sides, our appetizers, and then my dinner salad, in that order.
Another time, we were seated, waited 10 minutes to get a our drink order, I finally got up and wrangled a waiter who instead humoring me and taking a my drink order, told me flat out the he was not my server and that the guy in my section would be by soon to help us.  After another five minutes, we just left.  There were 2 other tables there that night, again, not like they were busy.
My last straw was when I called them to ask what the kitchen hours were as we were looking to have a late-night dinner.  I was told that they serve a full menu til 10p and then just burgers and sandwiches from 10p til 11p.  Though he sounded quite confident and competent on the phone, we walked up there and got in at 10 after 10 and they refused us service.  I explained the phone conversation and I was told I was wrong and that no one in the resturant would have told me that if I actually called.  Basically called me a liar.
I don't think it's anything but awful service.  No discrimination, my fiance and I are well-dressed people and I'd like to think we're both server-empathetic since we both worked in food service for so long.  Just idiots.  Like I say, I REALLY wanted to like the Abbey Inn because I like supporting local resturants on the square and we eat out in downtown about 4 times a week.  Their food, though good, is not good enough for me to pop a blood vessel for putting up with the treatment of ther staff.  Unfortunate.
