We came here for breakfast after a big day of hiking. The food was amazing - cranberry walnut scone, French toast using their fresh baked bread, and yummy thick cut bacon. The downside for breakfast is the service. We didn't have to wait too long to be seated , but we were clearly lucky as the lines soon began to form, and the waitstaff became increasingly frazzled. They forgot 2 of my items (syrup and juice), which came very quickly upon reminder. There were several folks that just left as it was taking so long to seat them, and there were always open tables. I hope they read this review and consider reorganizing how they do service, because the food is certainly amazing.

    Bring your own maple syrup.

The place was pretty busy for brunch, and they did a decent job, giving us menus to look at while waiting, and getting us seated as quickly as they could (10 minutes).

The waiter was great, and the food was good; we both got the climber.

The only complaint I have is their ghetto maple syrup policy.  You have to pay $2 extra for a shot of "local maple syrup."  I thought that if you didn't specially order this expensive alternative, you'd be given generic "Aunt Jemima" style or something similar.  Nope!  You get dry pancakes sucker!  If I come back to this place in the future, it's BYOMS all the way!

Fluffy French Toast.  That says it all.  The burger, pancakes and egg salad had by the rest of the party was equally good.  We were there towards the end of the day so there wasn't much of the baked goods left but they looked delicious in pictures and I would LOVE to try some of them.  Will try to be back!

As the only restaurant in town they have command of the market. But they go fancy with fresh local ingredients and you pay for it. After hiking I want food in my mouth immediately so we had to try it. Generally the menu was small and wanting more than a $10 burger (without fries)we both went for the pulled pork special. We also ordered a bowl of fries for $5 which was actually far considering that would have been a dinner portion and it was combo of regular and potato fries with sea salt ooohhh. Pulled pork was yummy. Mind blowing or special? No. It came with cowboy beans, which are not my cup of tea, texas toast and cole slaw which was well done. I wish this had been an actual sandwich or I could have just eaten 10 pieces of bread for dinner.
Service was fantastic. Seated quickly and lots of water refills.
And so I give it 4 stars but the husband gave it 3. So to balance your great reviews I need to down grade it. We will give it one more shot but I just want a cheaper post hike dinner. And I will say that it is better than Noon Mark.

If you're looking for basic food, this is a good place to eat.  The grilled cheese sandwich was good.  The egg salad sandwich was eggs on a sandwich. Basic.

The problem is that neither the egg salad sandwich or the chips had any flavor.  Both were very bland, and the chips were barely salted.  A little spice goes a long way.

The only thing keeping this from one star was the price. $4 for the grilled cheese with chips, and $6 for the egg salad sandwich.

We didn't come here for lunch but we should have if we had left Lake Placid! But we stopped by to get some drinks - iced tea and an arnold palmer at the counter service section. The guy behind the counter was a little bit disoriented... When we told him we wanted an iced tea, and an arnold palmer, he had this blankest stare in his eyes like "huh?" And it also took awhile to charge us... We probably waited about 15 minutes since he was taking orders of the others that came after us. But again, if we ever come by here again, definitely would love to come and try the food. Oh, also, got a carrot walnut muffin, it was okay, bit dry. And also, that muffin was sitting in a glass dome and there were these other muffins sitting in the tins, and we asked what it was he had to ask the chef and the chef said they are carrot and walnut as well. Okay... we definitely DO NOT BELIEVE IT. I mean the walnut carrot muffin was dark while the other one was a light colored one and you don't even see any shredded pieces of carrots... And I asked the guy "are you sure?" and he's like "that's what the chef said." Okay buddy...

ADK Cafe is a favorite of ours for breakfast and dinner (it's open for lunch, too).  The food is made-from-scratch fantastic.  The best egg and cheese breakfast sandwich you've ever had is made here.  It's called The Hiker.  Breakfast options also include freshly baked muffins and scones, eggs, home fries, pancakes, french toast...a lot of standard breakfast fare that is anything but standard here.

I love the ambiance of the place as well.  The clientele is a real mixed crowd of locals, hardcore hikers and bikers, and other visitors.  From the tables and chairs to the beadboard walls in the bathrooms to the stone floor...the physical appearance of the this place is first-class, and consistent with the luxury of its related neighbor The Dartbrook Lodge.

I thought this place had a cozy quiet feel about it. But I think what baffles most people and they apparently don't read the chalk board when you walk in is the big sign. Credit or debit cards only as payment! Here cash is NO GOOD! Sorry folks I earn money for a living and I like to spend it on a trip, isn't that why we go on vacations? So they lose a point for that! Sure debit is close enough, but give me my bill and I'll leave the tip on the table and I'm outta here! Not here!

Food prices are on the high side, especially breakfast but that's a given for a touristy area! So at least give a fair portion! The exception I give them is there pancakes are enormous and they come with "real" maple syrup! Kudos for that!

In all the place is ok. Just remember leave your wallet and purse at home you won't need it here! Just bring that plastic thing with!

Pure serendipity landed us on the doorstep of the ADK when after a long day of travel we pledged  to patronize the next restaurant we encountered.  The place, and all of it's cheery and personable staff, had us at hello...or maybe even just before, when we pulled into the lot and saw a cozy, homey, welcoming establishment in front of us.

The bliss started with a bottle of the most local beer we could find - the reddish Ubu Ale from up the road in Lake Placid.  We sipped on our Ubu as we waited for everything to arrive, counting down the moments until the arrival of ADK's famous homemade bread.  Our server was quite the character, a temporary transplant from England with a big personality and a sly wit, as was the lovely chef/owner/manager extraordinaire, Fiona, who seemed fully in command of every detail inside the kitchen and out.

We split diametrically opposite meals - the plate of grains, vegetables, and spreads, and a roasted half chicken with macaroni and cheese and cole slaw.  The plate was a triumph of creativity and diversity, nothing like any vegetarian ensemble I've ever seen or heard of.  Corn and white beans topped with red pepper spread.  Quinoa with an Indian onion chutney.  Toast points with avocado and green onion.  Cucumber topped with pesto and white bean spread.  Sliced apples with peanut curry.  Kale with strawberries.  A homemade pickle slab.  A mound of kalamatas.  Hard to decide which of this colorful array of tantalizing creations was the best - all were fresh, fun and unique.

The roasted chicken had an ideally golden crisp skin concealing supremely tender meat.  We gorged on the beautiful bird on its own and scooped some up with torn portions of the fabulous homemade wheat bread.  The macaroni and cheese was just creamy enough to be dangerous and had a perfect overall flavor.  Even the unadvertised cole slaw, with a heavy dose of celery seed, was phenomenal.

We tossed several coins and consulted our waiter before making the toughest call of the night:  what kind of pie to get?  For uniqueness and to go with a house recommendation we chose plum and were not disappointed in the least.  Slices of real fruit, great spices including ginger, a thick, delicious pastry crust, and a bowl of ambrosial whipped cream to close it out.

The whole ADK experience just felt right.  It felt like home.  And, if we lived closer, it probably would be.

We really enjoyed a large family meal here.  It's a succinct menu, but everyone enjoyed their meal, from the 3 year old to the vegetarian to the traditional meat eater.  This is one of those special places that puts thought into each and every ingredient.  Great service.  Casual atmosphere.  Nice ambiance.  A gem!

Had a great tempeh reuben here -- it's such a relief that reliable vegetarian food has arrived in the Adirondacks. Their french fries are also super -- a nice mix of sweet potato and regular potato, fresh cut and perfectly fried. The apple pie was excellent and the coffee was top notch. Great friendly staff. The perfect beginning and/or end to a full day of hiking.

Absolutely fantastic. Fiona is a genius.
I had the veggie plate, which was a completely creative and rich plate of greens, quinoa, veggies and dips and sauces and....oh my!
Like I told the owners, it's hard to find a place that doesn't just throw some soy, tempeh or seitan replacement on some bread and call it a day...
It's harder still to find a place like that in the middle of the wilderness...but, I did.
Great Great breads and pies are made here fresh daily. I was lucky enough to sit down as a walnut rosemary bread was coming out. What?????
These guys have a heart for quality and that makes all the difference.
    Cheers!

We've been coming here for a few years whenever we visit the Lake Placid region. We love having breakfast here on our way out of town. Fresh, local ingredients, well prepared with friendly service.

It is credit or debit card ONLY, no cash :) that works great for us because we never have cash.

The bread here is really delicious. And the coffee hits the spot. Definitely worth the stop :)

Ate here twice over Memorial Day Weekend 2013 and loved both meals. The service was gracious and attentive and the kitchen was willing to work with some of my special dietary needs. Servings are more than you need - which is great because the food is so good you will want a lot. Had a sandwich that was a special of the day that you MUST have if you ever see it on the menu: grilled cheese with fresh roasted corn and cilantro pesto. Still dreaming about it! Please consider putting it on the menu!

Happened in on this place while staying nearby and ended up eating several meals there over the course of a couple of days. Everything was fresh and clearly made with care and expertise. Excellent bread, great sandwiches, substantial salads that were more than an afterthought. Really friendly service. A great place in its own right, but especially for the area, which doesn't have a ton of alternatives. I'd go out of my way to go back.

I have 2 words for this place - customer service. I went into this cafe with my other half and after glancing at the menu was a little worried. I asked the guy at the desk if they could arrange for something gluten-free and vegan and he seemed fairly certain it was possible, but just to be sure he went and got one of the chefs from their kitchen. He asked what we needed, recommended a few items and told us to make sure our waiter knew what we needed and it would be done. My other half had their TLT (tempeh, lettuce and tomato) and I had an earth plate that was covered in a delicious sampling of everything tasty, vegan and gluten-free from their kitchen - definitely not a boring salad by any stretch of the imagination. The portions were generous, well seasoned, attractive and interesting. The staff were patient and really nice. The restaurant itself was clean, quiet and great for catching up with friends or having a relaxed lunch. Gluten-free and vegan aren't their thing as far as I can tell, but this is a great example of how a restaurant that focuses on the customer can come out with a great product in a pinch and win business and a good recommendation for years to come. They've got mine for sure.

Awesome! There are lot's of sandwiches, dinners, and dessert options and the inside is cozy. Great food made from local ingredients. Staff and owners are super nice and helpful too. This is a MUST stop while on Route 73 if you're headed for Lake Placid. I know I'll be back! Oh debit and credit only, no cash. Delicious pies too!

An omelette stuffed with: Collard greens, black-eyed peas, slice of white chedder, and a slice of ham.  Oh baby was this good!  the black eyed peas were thoroughly cooked without being mushy, and the collard greens were nice and wilted and gave the omelette a touch of bitterness, cheese gave it the richness, and the ham in there was excellent.  The omelette was accompanied by a couple of generous slices of multi-grain toast with butter, and some small quartered yukon gold taters, nicely roasted. And good coffee.  excellent brekky.

Food is pretty good, though nothing I'd rave over.  However, it's a friendly and homey place, a good fit for its setting.  Friendly and gracious staff, though some professional lapses (There were two mistakes with my order -- sub-optimal).

Would probably have given it a 3.5 if 1/2 stars had been available.

The first place I've dined at that is CREDIT CARD ONLY.  The place is 20 minutes from the nearest bank!

If you are into the locavore food movement, this is the place for you! It's not vegan, the meat is not from some kid's family pet cow or turkey, it's not elitist, just fresh wholesome, flavorful meals, prepared by a passionate staff.  They bake everything on site.

The lunch menu is satisfying and the food is hearty, but it won't arouse your taste buds like the Eat N Meet in Saranac Lake.

Portions are generous, the ambience perfect!  A must stopping lace if you're getting on or off the Northway to the High Peaks or Lake Placid region.

After enjoying a second trip to The ADK Cafe this past weekend, I feel confident in giving this gem of a restaurant 5 stars.
My husband and I shared the Meatloaf & Mac special, which is their famous baked macaroni & cheese, topped with two slices of their homemade meatloaf (as good as any homemade meatloaf I've ever had, if not better!) and a sandwich special that day - Grilled Swiss + Bacon with a Leek Chutney. We also enjoyed the Maple Syrup Margaritas...I had a really hard time sticking with just one!

My kids enjoyed their Egg Salad and BLT sandwiches, made with thick cut, smoked bacon and served on their sandwich bread. The sandwiches came with homemade pickles and potato chips (crispy, delicious and overdone in a good way). Their menu is creative enough to satisfy a "foodie" but also basic enough to make everyone in the family happy. My son was especially pleased that the egg salad didn't have any 'weird' stuff in it.

I have to say - everything we ordered was outstanding! The food is made from scratch, using the freshest ingredients, and the portions are generous, so we had leftovers to eat the next day too!

Best of all, the homey and rustic menu couldn't meld any better with the restaurant's setting - which in one word equals cozy. In warmer weather, the deck is sunny and inviting with views of the adjacent Dartbrook Lodge's field of wildflowers, and the surrounding Adirondack Mountains. In the winter, the twinkling candles and tea lights will lure you in from the snow for a warm meal...this is precisely what drew us in the first time around, and I'm so glad it did!

A couple of notes - First, this is a credit card only restaurant (No cash), which shouldn't be a problem for most these days, but you never know!
Secondly, the service couldn't be more friendly, or knowledgeable about their product. Both visits left us impressed in those areas!
But if I had to find one critique, it would be that the wait was a tad long. On our most recent visit, we arrived smack dab in the middle of their lunch rush, so a longer than usual wait would be expected. But on our first visit last year, we arrived during a snow storm, and were the only people in the place. The service was on the slower side then as well.
I only mention this because if you're looking for a 'quick' meal, this might not be the spot for you. The wait didn't bother us at all because we weren't in any particular rush, but it might bother some. I also believe there is a significant difference between waiting too long at a restaurant because you've been neglected by the waitstaff, and waiting because the food you ordered is being made fresh. Good food takes time - and I definitely think it was worth it!

It just doesn't get any better. Prices are great. Food is out of this world. It's simple inside, true, so if you're looking for a 'dining experience' besides the food, chose somewhere more uppity. But it's very clean, nice wood, very cozy. The service is friendly, helpful, and timely. We have had the muffins in the morning--out of this world. Somewhat innovative flavors and perfectly moist and absolutely delicious.

The Vegetable plate: I was expecting a more or less bland and uninteresting dish. It was amazing. Every part of the dish was succulent and far surpassed any vegetarian specialty food I have had anywhere. Extremely tasty and delicious, and of course very healthy.

Spinach Artichoke dip: This has long been one of my personal favorites, in general, and I love trying this dip at different restaurants. Best I have ever had. Tons of spinach. Very green. Very flavorful. The bread that comes with it is amazingly flavorful. Perfect complement. And. Unlike most other dips, there is no layer of oil / fat floating at the top of the dip. Just lovely.

Haddock Soup: Wow. I tend to assume that fish soups will be fishy, and they typically are. Delicious, light, refreshing broth, lots of vegetables, refreshing and calming in the way a bowl of fantastic Pho would be (but *not* Pho flavor).

I hear the meatloaf is absolutely amazing; can't wait to try it. I'm going back as often as i can. Period.

Btw. Their bread is fantatsic, and the freshness of all of their foods is amazing. All fresh produce, and you can tell. Because there is actual taste.

Not exactly an adventure, I tried the Grilled Cheese Sandwich with mixed greens. I liked this place and would go back. Not including the tip, it was about thirteen clams for lunch with coffee. I'd like to try out more of the menu to find a favorite. I'm sure it's in here somewhere.

Like the simplicity of an Adirondack chair, there's a simple beauty to the food served here. If your diet has been deficient in hydrolyzed vegetable proteins, this place won't help. The kitchen staff came out, when time permitted, to tell patrons about their work. Items are made from scratch with care. I thought the bread was great. The server covering my table seemed to be training.

This location is accessible if you can pull the front door open. I'm guessing it was under a five-pound pull. It may be tougher in winter with the snow and all.

The food being really fresh stands out at the Adk Cafe.  While simple and definitely not pretentious, the freshness made it more delicious than some fancy Manhattan restaurants.  Their desserts are famous, so make sure to take something home.  They have a super-automatic espresso machine, so you are sure to get something drinkable and rather tasty if you are an espresso snob like me.  A professional and friendly staff round out the experience.

No cash - I like that!

I'm not as happy with this place as other people, maybe because I ordered take away both time I ate here, taking the nice staff out of the picture. I went there 3 times and took out each time. First, got a carrot walnut muffin, very good, very huge, and very fresh...all for 3 dollars, give that an A.
Second visit, went for the pizza and a mixed green salad with sunflower seeds. First, the salad. If you tell me the salad features sunflower seeds, not the most elite of the nuts and seed category, I'm expecting a good portion of seeds!!! Hardly any were on the salad. The greens were rugged and fresh, the lemon dressing was very lemon, almost Rogue lemony. I was ok with that, but this started a trend. I ask for dressing on the side, clearly, and they don't put it on the side! Pet peeve. And this salad was not cheap. SUch a bummer because I'm not the person who has the balls or energy to go back to the store for a new salad to my liking. The pizza was good but had a lot of flour still on the bottom of the crust. I thought it was a reasonable price when ordering but seeing how small the pizza was, just sharing it with One other person we were both kind of looking at each other at the end like, I really want that last piece of pizza....Plus like 2 more pieces we don't have. It was a bummer. 35 bucks for a pizza and a salad...kinda want more than that. Liked the thin crust but there was a lot of crust that wasn't that tasty wasting the pizza surface area.
Third and last visit, I was left to my own devices and decided for lunch I would order their Caesar salad with tempeh topping. This toppin, if I recall, cost like 6 dollars so I was expecting a meal portion of the topping, not a sprinkling. I'm pregnant and I wanted my protein. Kind of like with the sunflower seeds they gypped me! AND AGAIN I get home to see the salad dressing NOT on the side and this time it was worse because there was too much and it was Creamy. The parmesan was really good though. I ordered a piece of rye bread with it and I wasn't impressed. It was too fluffy, not what rye bread is. PLUS this salad with piece of bread was over 16 dollars. I was pretty miffed by the shortcomings.
I really love the idea of this restaurant and the inside is really homey. Why I am voting so low is that it's not delivering to my expectation. I would totally pay the piper the item they served were on point, but they miss the mark and really disappointed my excitement.

This is our favorite breakfast/lunch place when we come to Lake Placid. If its lunchtime as we head in/out we will stop for lunch and get one of several sandwiches on freshly baked bread (the chicken salad is so good!!). If it's morning, we will get muffins and coffee to go. The muffins are enough for four people and are so flavorful and moist. Everything is so good you just can't go wrong! It's worth traveling to this place for a good meal when staying in Lake Placid. If it's nice out you can sit outside too.

Me and a friend have been going to The ADK since it was cedar run bakery, Always good solid food. Got better when the new owners took over and brought farm to table fresh to the menu. I have to say this past time we went there, the menu hasn't change and the specials are always the same. I feel they have hit the small diner brick wall. I still rave about the place the owner always remembers us when we come and the service is good and food is great.  A must stop for breakfast.

Life often rewards those who take small risks.

Like stopping at an empty cafe located sortof in that middle-of-nowhere area between Lake Placid and I-87.

    The food was outstanding.

I had a ~1/3 lb cheeseburger made with local cattle and a homemade bun for $11.  It came with homemade potato chips, which I am a complete sucker for.   Both were extremely tasty.  The tablemate ordered a homemade grilled cheese sandwich with bacon and claimed it was "fantastic", with fresh made bread.

For dessert (and I almost NEVER order dessert, but everything else was SO tasty, I couldnt refuse), I ordered a $6 chocholate chip brownie bread pudding with cream sauce that was so phenomenal, I was guilty that I ordered it!   Apparently the apple pie ($5) was excellent as well.

So solid was our meal that we left with some cookies from their bakery counter, as well as a loaf of rye bread, which was rather pricey at $5/loaf, but I'm sure it will be worth it assuming it's as solid as everything else we ate.  On the way out we spoke to the owner a bit, who was very friendly, and I will 100% return to ADK Cafe on future Whiteface/Lake Placid visits.

Stopped here for lunch yesterday on the way out of the Adirondacks. This is a quaint little restaurant with the awesome smell of a bakery. The menu is limited, but the quality of the food was excellent. The grilled cheese sandwich on multigrain bread with swiss and bacon was the best I ever had. Kids liked theirs too; wife had burger which was also good. Some homemade cookies and a brownie topped things off nicely.

We stopped in here a couple of times to get beverages so I did not eat anything. But I did have a chance to look over their menu on their giant blackboard and see that they had several vegetarian/vegan dishes so I not only bookmarked it on yelp but also in my head for the next time I am up in the area.

The restaurant is lovely with furniture made by their neighbors at Dartbrook Rustic Goods and they have a lovely patio for some al fresco dining. I am sad that we did not have the chance to dine there as it looked very promising.

My coffee and iced tea I got there were good. I wish that had not been the extent of my experience but so be it.  I can always do an update... Must go back!

    Surprisingly amazing!

Visiting from California for the IM in Lake Placid we have not experienced great service or food yet...until...today. We drove out of town to view the bike coarse and stopped here for a snack/lunch.

Parking is a pain...but worth it I promise!

We decided to sit and eat although the place was packed. We figured it was must be good.

The waitresses are fast & friendly. I fell in love with their urgency. This place was packed and these girls wee hustling!!! I noticed they worked well together.

The basket o' fries is amazing! Grease poppin' hot like I like'm and with the skin! Very delicious!!!

    Things we ordered;
*Chicken Ceasar- amazing. Large, fresh and the right amount of dressing.
*Chicken salad sandwich- Yummy. Comes with chips
*Chicken Clun- Also yummy and comes with chips.
*ADK burger- Juicy! I did ask for well done and it came out medium rare so I sent it back and they fixed it in a joffy. No problem because the service was so good I don't mind things like this. They even insisted they take it off the bill. It wasn't nessesary, but they did it.
*Pecan Pie- wow & wow. Move over Gramma...

Hope this place is here the next time we visit. It's worth the drive out of town.

PS Bring a fly swatter...there was definitely a fly problem :(

We rented a cabin in Keene somewhat randomly as a stopover on a long car trip. The presence of this restaurant there means that we will be coming back to Keene for a longer stay. On top of being a beautiful area, having access to a restaurant that captures both the charm of the local region and the food quality of a top-rated NYC restaurant is almost too good to be true.

The baked goods are truly outstanding--the loaves of  bread are among the best I've had as are the muffins (which aren't too sweet).

The dinner menus is maybe 6 to 7 in-season items that change often, which is almost always a good sign. And the food did not disappoint. The small selection of wines and beers are excellent choices. They remember you when you come back (as we did twice more). The food could probably be described as New American. There are vegetarian options if you are so inclined.

If you're staying in the High Peaks region, do not miss this place.
