Was there last nite. Food was great, wine was awful and our server was not interested in taking care of us. First it took about 20 minutes to get the glass of wine, entrees before salad and not evened offered dessert! She was quick on getting the check to us so she could get rid of us. Will not be going back for a long time.

Nice atmosphere, pretty room. Smiling servers.
We ordered a couple of sandwiches and waited.
So, I decided to go into the other room, since we knew we'd wait a while to get our food. They have a bakery case for take-out items. I eyed a certain pie. It was called something like "Creamy Vanilla Walnut Pie." It simply looked to die for! I had that pie in the back of my mind the entire time I ate my food...
I had a half pound mushroom, onion and swiss burger, which was probably one of the best burgers I had had in a long time. The mushrooms and purple onions were sliced paper-thin and sautéed. They also put fresh butter pickles on it. YUM. Hubby's cajun chicken sandwich was okay. He said it was a bit dry. The fries were very good.
So, now, it's time for dessert and I can't wait to order that pie.
Our server came around with a tray of about 6 different things.... No vanilla walnut pie (apparently, the one in the case was to be sold as a whole pie)...a huge disappointment, but oh well. There were a few cakes, and some stuff I hadn't never heard of before. There is obviously a crafty sweet-lover/baker in their midst. Since a few people on here suggested the strawberry pizza (our server did also), that's what I ordered. I didn't love it. It was a cookie crust with a layer of whipped cream in the middle and then sliced strawberries on top. It could've been excellent (the concept is great), but the whipped cream tasted just a notch above something that the grocery store could produce. I know I sound like a snob, but, if you're going to make a dessert that is 1/3 whipped cream, one should use the real thing. Just saying. The cookie part on the bottom tasted flat as well....
Would I come here again? Absolutely. It was still pretty good and I'll try a different dessert next time--maybe they'll even have that vanilla walnut thing.

This place has great food, great staff, wonderful dinning rooms, and a wonderful personable bar. Not many small towns can boost about having this kind of quality

What a place to bring your date, your parents, or just someone you enjoy chatting with in the quiet and sophisticated atmosphere.

The specials are their crown jewel. I have always enjoyed each and every entree I have ordered. Their beer selection is good, and their teas are simply amazing!

I love their Atlantic Salmon, it is decadent. Their Barbecue Baby Back Ribs are divine, and go well with an Anchor Steam Porter!

The staff here is nice, friendly, and very professional.

The desserts go above and beyond any place I have been to in Indiana. Complete and utter dessert decadence. You cannot go wrong with dessert here. You will just be mad you cannot try it all. All the more reason to come back!

They no longer take the http://restaurant.com gift cards, even if you have already purchased them. I find that to be bad for business, and that is what keeps them from getting 5 stars. All things considered, they are an amazing dining establishment with many fine points. A little pricey, but indulge yourself for a truly wonderful experience.

Will wonders never cease?! I dread going to Greencastle for family visits because the food selection is so limited there. I was thrilled to find a place that had more than deep fried frittery (i.e. typical Indiana) food. They keep this 'down home' yet make it palatable for someone who doesn't need to drop a container of salt or sugar into everything. The homemade beef vegetable stew was delish. I'd say this is a particularly great venue for dessert. Though I typically try to avoid this course, I have to say, the dessert was the highlight. I'm guessing that after the new Dillinger movie comes out, a few people may swing through Greencastle to visit the site of one of the infamous robberies (as a side note, I believe said bank is on the next side of the town square from this place). I would say a dessert stop in here would be totally in order. They are "known" for the "Strawberry Pizza" which everyone in my family loved. The coconut/ pineapple (?) cake that was also made with rum was pretty good too. Especially if you like the Rum part. They also feature Indy's Best Chocolate (on Mass Ave in Indpls) which is awesome stuff as well. Get some of that to go and go gawk at that bank, maybe??

Wow, Almost Home, I'm impressed! You've gone from a small, super frilly, Victorian flower explosion tea room to an expanded, more modern, less oppressive restaurant! What's that? You don't close at 3:30pm anymore? You're open til NINE? That means DePauw students could actually go on a date someplace other than Great China Buffet or Snappy Tomato Pizza! Wonderful! And wait a minute--you serve alcohol now, too? Will wonders never cease?

Almost Home is truly something special in Greencastle, Indiana, where it's pretty typical for restaurants and coffee shops to bomb out after a couple years of business. Like I said, there have been some major changes at Almost Home since I graduated from DePauw in 2002. The space is larger and bears little to no resemblance to the overflowing chintz of its earlier years--the exposed brick makes this a much less fussy environment and gives the place a nice ambiance that appeals to most everyone, not just 60 year old ladies.

I stopped by for lunch with Justin after we made a quick detour to visit our alma mater. The broccoli cheese soup has been on the menu forever and it IS tasty, so I was glad to see it's still on the menu. The chicken salad sandwich was very good, as was Justin's sandwich (something with ham, turkey, cheese and veggies) and the bread was especially tasty and substantial. I would have loved to sample some of their desserts or a treat from the bakery case out front, but we needed to get back on the road. Apparently, Almost Home has won awards recently for Best Dessert in the area (which includes Indianapolis)--definitely a great honor for a restaurant in little Greencastle. I look forward to heading back for dinner, cocktails and dessert the next time we're in town.

There aren't very many Greencastle restaurants of this caliber open for breakfast, lunch and dinner--it's nice to finally have more options than the Walden and to see a restaurant survive (and thrive, really) in the area. The folks there are sweet, the setting is comfortable and the food is good. Definitely stop by if you're in the area!

This is pretty much the only place in town you could have a nice date at... consequently, the hosts develop a liking for you when you visit them twice a week for four weeks in a row... it's a pleasant setting, and the food is good. The only drawback is that the menu is on the shorter side. Oh, and if you forgot to buy a present for your date, you can buy candles or cards at the entrance!
