Is it the best food in town... No... Is it a damn good grub joint with an excellent beer selection... YES.
Maybe it's because I'm a sucker for good fresh local seafood no matter where I am, but this place was very good. Â My fish was only slightly overdone, but it was still flake and delicious. Â The menu was bigger than I expected, but when I'm out, I rarely get much past the nightly specials anyway. Â I did try the baked oysters, and even though they not not as good as peg-leg pete's in P-Cola, they are very good (and HUUGE). Â
The staff was extremely friendly, and being a beer snob, I enjoyed the fact that Mother Earth Brewing (local establishment) actually brews a pilsner specifically for Mosquito's. Â
Topped the evening off with a Key Lime pie that is made form scratch, butter and graham cracker crust, that complemented the tartness. Â
Oddly enough I thought enough of this place to head back a second time before bolting out of town... yeah... it was just as good and fun the second time around.
We went on a recent trip to Atlantic Beach. It was for two of our family member's birthdays. We heard that it was an incredible restaurant from a taxi driver so we decided to give it a try. We got there at around 8:15 and waited close to an hour to be seated. We walked from our rental house (close to a mile) so we really didn't want to walk all the way back empty handed. The place is really cool inside, with spanish moss hanging from the ceiling. One thing that did surprise me was how involved management is in the restaurant. A manager was dealing with the waiting list while we were waiting. For the birthdays, they brought out complimentary s'mores, which was pretty cool. Never seen that before.
However, wasn't too impressed with a few aspects. First, the wait was painful. We had a 15 month old with us and he started getting very ornery after the first 30 minutes and I really can't blame him. They do not have call ahead seating or reservations, which really surprised me. I do believe they could control their wait times with the reservations. I went to the bar to get a drink but was pretty much ignored by the two bar tenders. I couldn't even get a bar menu. So, I went back out to the waiting area. Â When we got to table, finally, the waitress came and introduced herself with an obviously fake name. Turns out that the management wants customers to get a "southern" feel of things so the staff goes by stupid "southern" nicknames. Not exactly what you expect from a restaurant where the food is around $20 a plate. The meal was good. I don't eat fish so I got their vegetarian alfredo and garden salad. It wasn't worth the $21 total I paid ($16 for the entree and $5 for the side salad). The rest of the party enjoyed their meals. No complaints about the food itself. Just the price for the food. We went to bars in the area with better seafood, much better prices, and little to no crowds.
All in all, probably won't go back there again to eat. They did have cute tourist shirts...might go back and get one of those.
We went with the recommendations of other users and had the lobster dip and shrimp and grits. We didn't regret that for a second!! Everything we had was delicious and the staff was wonderful. We were told it would be a 45 minute wait and we were sitting at a table within 25 minutes. Highly recommended for everyone including those with kids. Â Fun kids menu selection.
Review Source:Hello good people of Yelp! If you are reading this, then I suppose you care about your dining experience and are seeking the advice of total strangers to aid in tonight's diner choice. Before I lay into AM, I will be forthright: I am a native Eastern North Carolinian, having grown up very close to the crystal coast and have discerning tastes in matters of the seafood palate. What's more, I live in one of America's culinary epicenter's: Portland, OR and work at one of Portland's finest fine dining establishments. Therefore, as you have already deduced, I am one TOUGH F-ING COSTUMER.
So I will cut to the chase, we haven't got all night: Amos Mosquitoes deals in the currency of mediocrity, shelling out mountains of indifference from a management hierarchy with little regard toward quality, creativity or preparation. On my most recent trip (I go twice a year or so, the fam insists) the fried pickles were soggy, house salad was from yesterday (or the day before), and the shrimp and scallop alfredo tasted like is was dumped right out of the back of the Sysco truck. The sushi is a token gesture, reserved for folks who don't really eat sushi that much. Mediocrity! I'm telling you! This place is all image. You'll notice how rich the menu is, but does fresh, local seafood need all that much to be delicious? Fresh, quality ingredients and simple preparation go a long way.
On some nights, FOH is fine, but I tried it on July 5, 2013, obviously one of the busiest nights of the year for this establishment, and I waited 10 minutes to talk with someone about how long the wait would be. That is truly ridicules from a management prospective. There's money to be made, don't keep me waiting! Servers often seem confused and there is a noticeable lack of support staff. Several times I have had to flag our server to get the second round ordered. If you go toward the end of service, be prepared to struggle for attention.
OMG I've been meaning to write this review for years. Thanks for letting me get this off my chest!
Went  to Mosquoto's our first night in Atlantic Beach and it ended up being sushi night. Our family shared their namesake roll as an appetizer and then each got our own entrées. One person I was with said it was the best yellowfin tuna he had ever eaten. Our server Sunshine made our experience even more enjoyable. Definitely worth the 30 minute wait to sit down, and set the bar high for the rest of our meals while here.
Review Source:A must do in Atlantic beach. Â I always come here when visiting for family reunion. We usually have to wait awhile, but us girls pass time in the bar drinking their delicious Amos Mojitos and whooping it up. We had a party of 16 and could not believe they sat us at one table. Had the lobster appetizer which is to die for. I always get the fresh catch and again it was wonderful. The desserts are not to pass up!
Review Source:Had a pork chop special with a jalapeno crust/sauce that was just delicious. Service was great. Our server was really wonderful with the kids -- super friendly. We knew to get there pretty early (5:30) and we only had about a 5 minute wait for a table. The decor is very fun. The beer was cold, the view outside was nice. I think this may be the best spot to eat in Atlantic Beach.
Review Source:Amos Mosquito's is a favorite in Atlantic Beach. Â It is casual, but has very good quality food and a good selection. They don't take reservations, so sometimes the wait can be 30 minutes or more and parking is limited when they are busy. Â Sandy, the owner, is on top of everything and is usually on site. Â We were very impressed when we recently ate there with our 16 month old granddaughter. Â They not only had highchairs, but placed a paper mat under it to catch anything she dropped. We noticed that the staff cleaned table tops and carpet after each customer was finished. Â The variety and quality of food served at Amos Mosquito's is excellent. Â They have a full bar, dining room, and outside patio options for seating.
Review Source:Went here this past weekend. The food is really good! Had the shrimp and scallop alfredo while my boyfriend had the fresh catch bluefin tuna. Both were excellent. The drinks were also great; we had the Amos Mojitos. Be prepared to wait at least 45 mins. Also be prepared to park away and walk because the lot is not that large and fills up quickly. A must try in Atlantic Beach!
Review Source:The only things preventing this from being a five star review is (1) the mixed drinks were mediocre and (2) the restaurant was noisy. Otherwise, the food was great (the best clam chowder we've had here, the local yellowfin tuna perfectly cooked and delicious, the cheese and lobster dip very tasty, and excellent key lime pie) and the server was attentive and friendly. Â It being the Friday of Memorial Day weekend you would expect a long wait for a table, but we only waited the predicted 20 minutes before being seated. Â Definitely some place that we'll go to again!
Review Source:OK my wife has a special allergy and so we called the restaurant to ask them if we could eat there. The woman who answered the phone was very nice and went to check with the chef who said don't come they could not and would not accomodate her allergy. While on one hand we appreciated his honesty we also wonder why a chef with any experience could not and would not cook a special request on a non busy week day night. So if you have any type of food allergy or special request please do not try this restaurant.
Review Source:This is my family's favorite place to eat when we go to Atlantic Beach. Â I have four children ranging from 13 to 2 and to find a place that we all love is quite amazing! Â Try and get here early in the evening (and earlier in the week) to avoid a long wait for a table. Â The house made potatoe chips and bleu cheese dip make the wait worth it! Â
I usually get one of the fish specials yet have also sample the shrimp and grits (outstanding) as well as the meatloaf and pork chops (we have a few non seafood people in our group). Â Everything is well prepared and plated.
Service is always super friendly and attentive. They are one of those few places that make you feel it is ok to have a two year old there - they even put a large sheet of paper under the child's chair to catch any spills. Â It is not my first choice to dine out with a toddler, but when at the beach it is nice to be able to dine at a good place that makes you feel welcome.Gummy worms on the plates of the kid's plates make theolder children love it - even before they get to cook their own smores at the table.
Definitely a must stop while on Bogue Banks.
I had high hopes for this place based on other reviews (27/30 on 25 Google reviews???). Â I don't get it.
My girlfriend and I split the cheesy lobster dip to start. Â Other than that, we each had some broiled seafood. Â We agreed that it was all just mediocre at best.
I did very much like that they had Highland Gaelic Ale on tap, which is a fine brew.
Well, sadly we must say this may be our last visit to Amos Mosquitos... we own a home in Emerald Isle and almost always eat there when we visit, about 5-6 times a year - my wife almost always gets the shrimp and grits and raves about it - but this time was different - not sure, maybe they have a new chef who has different recipes - but I can tell  you this - BROWN GRAVY is not the sauce of choice for shrimp and grits.  Seriously, it was brown gravy - and not good at all - brown gravy has no place near seafood much less with shrimp swimming in it.  She ate it but she should have sent it back; however not wanting to make a scene (they were, as always, extremely busy).
I, on the other hand, got the large fried seafood platter and it was, as always, very good - ample portions. Â BUT I changed from french fries to sweet potato fries and they were coated in cinnamon, which may sound delicious but trust me, was not. Â They were also very limp - which is probably due to them being sweet potato's, but cooked at a higher temp and forget the cinnamon - doesn't work with seafood IMO.
The staff was exceptionally attentive and the owner greets you when you arrive and if you get there around 5PM there is little if any wait time... but if you go after 6PM or when it's raining, you will wait and wait and wait. Â There is a bar so that can ease the wait. Â I recall the owner coming by our table in the past to see if all was well, but for some odd reason he didn't do that this time or we would have let him know our feelings about the S&G issue - we may go back, not sure... but they need to get back to the basic S&G recipe they had for years - which was incredibly delicious. Â This one sucks and is an awful thing to do to jumbo shrimp.
Wonderful atmosphere, great staff, fun place to eat - prices are reasonable but tend to the high end - then again, it's a nice place and the food is good, other than the shrimp and grits.
This was our favorite on Atlantic beach! Â Great atmosphere. Friendly and helpful staff. Nice rocking chairs to sit out with the kids. They were very accommodating to our three children under the age of 8. My husband had the shrimp and grits which was awesome, and I had two smaller plates. The she crab soup and appetizer crab cakes which were perfect amounts for a meal
Can't say enough. Great atmosphere, and the campfire dessert for the kids was a huge hit!
Can't wait to go again!
What a great place!! Excellent food and cocktails. I had this penned pasta with seafood that was AMAZING! Everything is fresh... almost everything is locally sourced. And, the service is great!!
One of our little tykes dining with us ordered chocolate milk. He found some weird glob in the bottom... Â nothing dirty... just maybe like an ingredient coagulated weird. He wouldn't drink it, so the OWNER brought him a new drink, apologized in person, and promised to reach out to the supplier.
A few days later, his mom received a hand written note and giftcard apologizing again. He said that he was looking to find HFCS free alternatives and thanking us for coming! Wow.
Will definitely be back next time we are in the OBX.
Amos Mosquito's is a great place to eat. While you will wait a while during the summertime, the food is worth the wait! We had the Yellowfin Tuna with a side of sweet potato fries. The tuna was cooked perfectly, and the fries were crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, just like you would want!
Be prepared to wait, but be excited!
I was super impressed with this place. Â I have traveled down from Cleveland, OH to this area several times over the years and this is (by far) one of my favorites. Â The wait time was long (90 min.) but well worth it. Â We had a group of seven and not one person had a bad thing to say. Â I don't understand the few negative reviews. Â I guess you cannot please everyone. Â Our meals were portioned perfectly, the flavors superseded satisfaction, and the prices coincided with the quality of service and food. Â We ordered the fried green tomatoes, lobster dip, and pot stickers as apps. Â For entrees we ordered the meatloaf, macadamia encrusted grouper, the scalloped scallops, crab cakes, and a flat iron steak with a bleu cheese cream sauce. Â We shared eachother's dishes and were in heaven with every bite.
For what it is worth, I currently help operate my father's restaurant (30 years in business) and  I have worked in the service industry for 20 years.  I will definitely be back the next time around.  I absolutely loved this place.
We wandered in to Amos Mosqito's just by dumb luck as we drove by. What a treat! He owner and young ladies at the host desk were extremely charming and helpful, and thought the place was very crowded, eh made every effort to accommodate us. Our waitress was named Sunshine, and it truly fit. She had us and my kids laughing, and was very sharp and accommodating. All of our meals were creative and delicious. The atmosphere is fun and lively. This place was an absolute hit in our book.
Review Source:Really good, they don't take reservations so we had to wait for about an hour/hour and a half. The manager and staff were really polite and kept thanking everyone for waiting. It was super crowded, so we just grabbed some drinks at the bar and went outside. Now, if we would have had our son with us there is no way I would have waited but since it was just my husband and I we were okay with the long wait.
We had lobster dip for an app, and broiled shrimp and friend soft shell crab for dinner. It was all really good! Our server was really sweet and helpful and the food came out pretty quick.
We will be back!
Ummmmmm...yeah. Â I lurved this place.
The place was a little crowded, however we just grabbed a drink and took it outside while we waited for our table...which was only about 15 minutes. Â
The food was just devine. Â I had crabcakes for an appetizer that just melted in my mouth. Â I didn't want my cabcake moment to end, it was that yummy. Â Waitress was EXTREMLY nice and engaging and even caught on to our humor and bantered back at us a bit. Â Fun fun fun! I ordered Shrimp and trout and it was A-MAZE-ING. So good. Â I didn't want that moment to end either. Â The autmosphere was comfortable. Â Lots of families, or couples on dates so lots of different types of groups enjoying meals at the Mosquito. Â
Highly recommend if you are in the area!!
Those skeeters serve it up well at Amos Mosquito's! Â I was taken to Amos Mosquito's for a lovely dinner Saturday, March 17th and I was in heaven. Â We were greeted warmly and though they were quite full, we didn't have to wait long. Â The man at the door, who turned out to be the owner, was quite friendly. Â This family-friendly coastal restaurant sits overlooking the Bogue Sound with even a covered patio that you can eat on to enjoy the view of the water. Â It's quite silly too because the grass and pine needles surrounding the patio are "fenced in" with old plates. Â
We started off with the Lump Crab cakes for an appetizer. Â They were made with some really generous lumps of crabmeat as well as with Roasted Corn and Scallion. Â Topped with a delicious chipotle aioli, I was gobbling up my share. Â
In addition to our glasses of water, which were never neglected enough to need refilling, we shared a bottle of wine. Â Since I recently did some research on wine, the Shelton Riesling from Yadkin Valley in NC seemed to be the perfect pick and at $23 it was a great price too. Â Now, I'm a wine girl, but I'm not usually a Riesling girl since they're sweeter. Â However, this one got my seal of approval because not only was it locally made, but it just had a touch of sweetness. Â
For my entree, I had the The Big Skeeter which is a combination of 2 fried seafoods. Â I chose the Oysters and Fried Flounder. Â Yumm. Â My date had the Steamed Crablegs. Â The food was so delicious and fresh that there wasn't too much room to talk since we were so excited about our food. Â All we could do was rave about it! Â Their menu may be focus on seafood since they are right on the water, after all, but they also features chicken, pork and Sterling Silver beef. Â
They are on the main road in Atlantic Beach and a must for anyone visiting, especially if you're looking for a nice dinner with good quality. Â Something else that's kind of silly and fun is that all the servers wear uniforms that are kind of like janitor shirts. Â They wear name patches with funny names like Peaches and Sugar Plum. Â With a name like Sugar Plum, we didn't know how to respond to our server, but she was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and overall provided great service. Â I also loved how, when we were leaving, the owner thanked us for coming in and asked us to come back.
I had always been on the fence about going to Amos' simply because the name made it seem like a place that paid more attention to a theme than the food. I was definitely proven wrong, as it was great!
After being seated quickly considering the crowd they had, our table had a great view on their outdoor patio (heated and enclosed for that night as it was as it was a little cold). The featured app of fried green tomatoes and country ham pimento cheese was great, and the crab cake pasta I got was also very good.
I don't know how you can downgrade a rating for a place based on wait times, unless they are way off in their estimates. Â It's like the old Yogi Berra quote about nobody going to a place because it's always too crowded. Â If they took reservations the complaint would probably be that you need to make them too far in advance.
Amos' seems to be the about only place of its kind in the Atlantic Beach corridor - a full-price, full-service, full-menu, full-bar restaurant of the kind that is a staple in most beach communities. Â Perhaps this only-game-in-town aspect does put a table here in high demand but it seems that it has not had a negative effect on food or service quality. Â
In our case, arriving on an on-season week night at around 8PM, I was indeed a bit surprised to find a 30-minute wait for our party of 6, but the estimate was right on (we were seated in ~20 minutes). Â The place is relatively small for a restaurant of this type, with most of the seating for large parties outside in their covered but not air-conditioned patio-- this can make for a sweaty experience on a hot summer evening but in our case the late hour worked to our advantage and we enjoyed the outdoor setting.
Everyone ordered seafood and everyone was very satisfied with the quality and quantity of the food. Â Of special note was the mixed seafood grill, consisting of a half-portion of the catch of the day, plus a skewer of shrimp plus a generous portion of scallops, along with a side dish. Â This proved to be a fantastic choice as the shellfish was cooked and seasoned perfectly. Â The catch of the day was yellowfin tuna; several of us asked to have the grouper from the other daily special substituted onto the mixed grill platter which they did happily -- both the tuna and grouper were fresh and excellent. Â
The service was also friendly and thoughtful -- servers are assigned a southern-fried pet name which is a little hokey but not overly played up - we asked for and used our server's real name and she seemed to appreciate it. Â
The only thing holding these guys back from the fifth star is value -- I guess with people waiting hours to get in there's little incentive to keep the prices down, and of course beach restaurants carry a premium. Â At $20-30 per plate it would be nice if a salad were included but even so we will continue to make Amos' our special night out restaurant on our Atlantic Beach weeks.
We went on a Thursday night which was pretty busy for a weeknight. Our wait time was 15-20mins for a deck seat for 2 people. Our wait for indoor seating would have been 30-40mins.
We got the house fried potato chips, the mixed seafood grill, Lump Crab Cakes with Roasted Corn and Scallion. The potato chips were good! They were soft on the inside, and crispy on the outside, not burnt, or over cooked, and the sea salt was just enough. The mixed seafood grill was delicious as well. The tuna steak was cooked to perfection. We had asked for it med-rare, and med-rare it was! The lump crab cakes with roasted corn were tasty, but the corn added a weird texture. I didn't read the description that well, so when I took a bite, it was an unwelcome and unfamiliar experience, but that's more my fault than theirs. The -1 star is because of the biggest let down: the penne that the crab cakes are served over. It was overcooked! It was like cafeteria mushy.
Minus the penne, everything was delicious. I would recommend going, just don't get the lump crab cakes dish. Â :)
The only thing stopping me from giving this place 5 stars is the fact that I didn't make it on 1/2 price Wednesdays!
Our server was pumpkin, seriously... She was great!
Frog legs were on special so I decided to torcher my daughter and her friend by ordering them as an appetizer. Â Massive backfire.
They gave us what actually looked like 4 frog legs on a plate, before anyone could scream I dished each one of us a leg, nobody wanted to, but slowly we each took a bite and the only screaming was for who gets the last frog leg, we ended up cutting up the meat from the last leg and getting in evenly distributed in 3 little piles one for each of us. Â It was delicious!
The main courses were good, not great, the atmosphere was perfect.
My daughter and her friend ordered smores for desert, they actually bring a fire pit to your table, marshmellows, sticks, and chocholate, I have never seen anything like this, kinda dangerous, but awesome!
Kids loved it, I loved it, I'm sure I will be back, ON A WEDNESDAY!
Good but pricey
We tried Amos Mosquito based on the recommendation from another family that visits Atlantic Beach every year and said that Amos Mosquito is the one place they always make sure to visit. Based on my visit I wouldn't rate it that highly but I don't regret going either. I should point out that I am very value-conscious so that does play into my review.
I had the crab cakes which cost about $22. Very tasty and the dish was very well prepared with a heaping plate of pasta in a nice sauce. But the crab cakes themselves though well prepared were rather "thin" and not made with the lump crabmeat described in the menu.
My wife had the shrimp and grits. It was excellent and not as greasy as that dish can sometimes be. It was also around $22.
The entrees did not include a soup or salad but the huge amount of carbs on each plate (pasta in the case of the crab cakes and grits in the case of shrimp and grits) assured that the portions were more than adequate. Actually they were too big for my taste.
The kids meals (burger and fries for one kid, chicken nuggets and fries for the other) looked good, but $8 each not including a drink or dessert is a little steep in my book, even for a beach town.
For dessert we all split the brownie ice cream sandwich. Very good but not exceptional. I understand the Creme Brulee is their specialty, but we weren't in the mood.
Two entrees, one cup of soup, no drinks except for one kids' cocktail and one dessert, plus two kids meals came to $75 plus tip.
As I said up front, it was good but not a "can't miss" destination in my book based on value. One last note, we arrived pretty early (5:30PM on a Tuesday) ... by the time we left at 6:45 it had quite a wait.
Love the name, seriously hate the insect. The décor is super cool - swamp woods meets Pottery Barn chic plus moss. The wait staff is super friendly and we waited only 5 minutes on a Friday night for a table.
I had the jerk chicken - if you are a jerk chicken fan (which I am, sort of) I'd say this dish is more like a jerk barbeque - still super good though. The flavor from the black beans and the mango chutney didn't meld together well with the chicken, or each other for that matter which was disappointing. Â
He had the catch of the day - it was good, but not super....
