How do I love thee? Let me count the beers -- which are listed in painstaking detail on clipboard menus. But  forget the poetical crap. For the beer aficionado, or the wannabe, or just the curious beer lover like me, I know of  no better place in New Orleans for craft beers and  foreign gems than the Avenue Pub -- especially if you like Belgian styles. (And that's not to knock The Bulldog, which I seldom walk past without stopping in.)  The Ave Pub has a great selection upstairs and down.  They satisfy the most incorrigible hop fiend (you sorry buggers), but they go well beyond that  with  sours, wheats, stouts, and a bit of malty stuff. They offer the best of the local beers and some stuff that's just weird.  I often wish they had a nice simple Scottish ale or some old-school  English "bitter," but they always have something that works for the non-hophead like me.  Every Friday evening  there's a special cask upstairs. Sometimes it's awesome, sometimes not so much, but it's always fresh and well-worth a try.  And they get beer that few other saloons in North America can get.  I have not tried their bottled beers, but they have an intimidating selection.  They also have a lot of bourbons,  though I don't go there for that.
The staff know their beer and they're very friendly.  They will  tell you whatever you need to know.  The owner is as close to the Beer Queen of the Universe as you'll ever want to get.
I'd call the food creative yet reliable  pub food, and not pricey.  I don't eat there often, but I've been reasonably happy with the burger, calamari, crab cakes, dump-truck fries, and a really nice grilled-cheese club (or whatever they call it.)  If they have something experimental, try it.  But the beer is the star of the show. Â
The place is divey in an unconsciously hip sort of way, but the clientele is eclectic - anyone who fancies beer is there, and nobody cares whether you're wearing a bow-tie or a nose ring, young or old.  If you are in New Orleans and love beer, you owe it to yourself to come here.  It's an easy streetcar ride from the CBD or Uptown, or you can stroll  from the CDB or  Warehouse District, in 30 minutes or much less.  Yo. ride your bike!
I have to say I like this bar, the beer selection the balcony, and of course the bourbon ambassador program, but I have to give it 2 stars the other night for the raw hamburger that my wife vomited in the middle of last night and I've been regretting all day. Â She hadn't even been drinking. Â I'm just glad we noticed before we had more than one bite. Â The staff was great, we even asked for it to be warmed up and they essentially went out of their way made a new burger with the same meat put in the over for a while. Â But, it was still red/raw and we didn't eat anymore. Â Hamburger in a bar should be cooked, no taking chances.
I'll stick to the drink selection, the upstairs and the balcony from now on.
Being a beer snob, this place has what I need. Â Always something new to try everytime I come here. Â
also something else I like is that I see something new on every visit. This place is so cluttered, in a good way, makes for a interesting joint especially when conversation runs out.
The food smells awesome but I haven't eaten there yet. Â
Upstairs is cool too, well actually kinda hot during the summer months. The balcony is nice in the fall. Â
Don't forget to go upstairs too, different beers up there. You might miss out. You might fall down the stairs too if you enjoy the upstairs too much. Â Im not sure how I know this...
My favorite place to go when I am in the mood for beer. They have one of the best selections in town with reasonable prices to boot! The draft list is rotating so there is always new exciting items to try. My favorite hang out area is the balcony which is great for St. Charles voyeurism. Also, the upstairs is non smoking which agrees with me.
With the two different levels they have two separate bars. The downstairs has the larger beer selection, but the upstairs has a fair amount as well. Also, if you open a tab at either location the value can run at the downstairs and upstairs bars which is helpful.
Overall a great neighborhood bar!
When you walk into Avenue Pub, you think "oh, another typical Nola bar/pub"... but you HAVE to go upstairs to really "get" this place. Walk up the stairs past the vast crazy art murals painted on the walls and enter another level of Nola bar/pub existence.
Avenue Pub has an incredible beer selection- although some beers you can only get at the upstairs bar and some only at the downstairs bar (you can go grab a seat upstairs and go downstairs to get a beer, though- so it's not that big of a deal)
If you have visitors who are beer aficionados, take them here. There are beers on offer that are rare and hard to get elsewhere.
The balcony is a nice place to hang out once you've got your beer. Strike up a conversation with some of the other people hanging out up there and make it a night.
Awash in day light, the suns bounty that blasts through the tall colonial era windows of the Avenue makes this place is a fabulous day drinking bar with an all star beer selection.
The musty sweetness of New Orleans evenings make this a nighttime "go to " as well . Saunter yo self to the outside upper deck and enjoy the Garden District's charm.
Consider yourself to be a beer-centric traveler? .....well then, this pub is not to be missed.
The Avenue is a great beer bar on a World Wide Scale.
The Avenue Pub is such a great Pub, it's simply a shame I've only been here once.  I love the atmosphere here, especially upstairs with its Grandma style living room and awesome balcony.  They have some interesting imports in their beer selection as well; they often have beers that are only available in the US at Avenue Pub.  Their bar food is easily some of the best in the city too.  I tried the Grilled cheese club which has drunken goat cheese, sharp cheddar and feta melted with sage, herb pesto, bacon and tomato on sourdough bread and served with fries.  This was by far the best grilled cheese sandwich I've ever had lol  Of course, I've never eaten another grilled cheese that was even close to being as ambitious.  I can't wait to try some more of the menu, both food and drink.
Review Source:Amazing beer selection! Definitely a great place to go after a long night working in the service industry. The bartenders are really knowledgeable about what they have on tap and can describe all the beers which is great.
The atmosphere is really laid back and welcoming.
I've only had their chips and salsa to eat but they have other enticing snack food on the menu that I would love to try!
Best bar in New Orleans?
Fantastic beer selection, both local and non-.
Tasty pub food (though not exactly healthy).
Kind, friendly staff with great service.
Friendly, non-Bourbon St.-type clientele.
Easily accessible via St. Charles streetcar.
Every city has its bars that do it right. Perhaps more than any other, Avenue Pub sets the bar for New Orleans.
Celebrate life and love the feast. Thanks to the recommendation of fellow Yelper and beer lover Bill T., we were able to do just that. Really awesome place with the most perfect hours: 6a-6a, yup!
Upstairs is definitely the place to hang here as the upper balcony, overlooking St. Charles, provides a clear view to the stars and is perfect for cooling off during a hot NO night. The colorful murals heading up the stairs are pretty cool too.
Beers, ales, and lagers seem to differ from night to night (whole line-up changed during a few different visits here). Some of the brews I enjoyed here were Au Fin Du Monde, Southern Tier Spice and the Pumkinator! - which goes like lightening, so grab it quick if you like it.
Will certainly be making this a regular stop off as The Avenue Pub's relaxed and laidback staff makes for an environment which is beyond inviting.
I'm going to have to split my reviews on this one because the bar and food service were worlds apart. Â
I can't argue with the "great beer bar" reviews; the selection was well chosen with lots of variety and a good showing of local craft brews.  The bar service was great with friendly, beer-loving  barkeeps. Â
The back kitchen was the opposite; aside from the delicious smothered waffle fries, the medium burger was served burnt by a surly waitress with enough attitude to convince me to write a review. Â I understand hangovers, and I don't like them either, but don't complain about it to your customers after getting orders wrong. Â The appropriate response when you serve a vegetarian the wrong, meaty order is not "we'll that's what I wrung up" and rolling your bloodshot eyes. Â A simple "we'll fix that works a lot better". Â
I could keep going with the examples of poor service I saw from the dining staff, but I'll just stick with the bar-side next time and eat elsewhere.
I've got to go back here. Â I've got to bring my friends here. Â This is a reason for some of my friends to get to New Orleans disregarding the entire rest of the city! Â
I've only been in once, on a rainy afternoon last week, but I'm already a huge fan. Â Avenue has a great attitude, and one of the top beer selections in the country. Â I was impressed by their draft list. Â Really really impressed. Â Then, when I took a gander at the bottle list, I was overwhelmed. Â The entire basement must be a giant beer cooler. Â (Wait, are you allowed to have basements in New Orleans?? Â Maybe they have a separate beer warehouse out back, I'll have to check sometime)
If you're that person who's always searching for a specialty pour that's hard to find, chances are, you're gonna be checking more than a couple off of your list after visiting the Avenue. Â I had beers I hadn't seen in years, from breweries I'd only ever had access to in either PA or CA. Â Maybe that's the secret - you need to have an "A" as the second letter of your state's abbreviation! Â Oh, crap, no. Â nono. Â Virginia doesn't do it. Â Oh, and Georgia. Â Ok, nope. Â Throw that theory out. Â
The building is great.  A New Orleans relic, easy to find on a corner of St. Charles, it has the same shabby chic feel of my favorite NOLA haunts.  But it has class.  And did I mention the attitude?  They know what they plan to do and not do, and they'll let you know.  No table service.  No samples.  But you *can* get a four ounce pour of any draft.  And ordering from the walk-up  counter is perfectly convenient. Â
The upstairs has a great atmosphere, with an even greater selection of beverages than available below. Â It's got a charming, cozy living room in a (fashionable) shared apartment feel. Â Add on a very nice balcony porch, and I bet this is a great place to hang out in the extended Louisiana Fall-Spring season. Â Alas, it was raining last Friday afternoon, but that just meant I had more of the place to myself. Â
Take your friends here if they like a good, comfy pub atmosphere, and especially if they're huge beer nerds. Â If you're coming from out of town and haven't heard about it, you should have. Â Word will spread. Â The Avenue should be a destination for beer lovers across the country. Â And remember, you're in New Orleans - the place is proudly open 24/7/365. Â Hallelujah.
Went on a weekday around 5, had most of the upstairs bar to just my friend & I. If you like trying different beers, this place will more than quench your thirst. Not into beer? No prob, they have more variety on their liquor shelf than you could hope for. Great burgers too. Downstairs a bit smoky, but didn't have any to deal with upstairs. Will definitely be back to the Avenue.
Review Source:Awesome experience here. Went with two friends wanting to sit on the balcony upstairs. We found the stairs up after a few minutes, but unfortunately there were no open seats. We decided to get beers and stand at an empty table, and eventually found some chairs.
Why five stars?
-The decorations inside and the murals on the walls were pretty cool.
-The upstairs bartender was really friendly and knew his beers. On a few of my trips inside we bonded over Game of Thrones, and on another watched the "Con Te Partiro" scene in Step Brothers, which was playing on the TV. Easy yelp points from me.
-Green Flash IPA on tap. Yeah buddy!
-The guy who took my order downstairs (my group split some of the jalapeno fries) was also very friendly. He was about to throw some older fries in a basket while I waited downstairs, then said "Let me throw some fresh ones in the fryer. You're upstairs, right? I'll bring 'em up when they're ready." Not a huge gesture at all, but it was greatly appreciated, and made the fries worth the price. That said...
-The fries were hot, crispy, and waffle cut (almost always a plus).
One of the highlights to my already fantastic trip to the NO. When I return, I will definitely set some time and streetcar fare aside for a trip back to the Avenue Pub. I will need to check out the downstairs beer selection too!
Honestly, I come here just for the dump truck fries! They have the most gorgeous, cheesy, creamy garlic bechamel sauce on them, plus I get them topped with bacon and jalapenos. They are really to die for! The ones topped with the meat, gravy and onions are not bad either. I am not really a beer connoisseur, so can't give you any tips in that department. Like I said, I just come for the fries! The upstairs area is really nice and cozy and it's a nice place to sit and talk with friends.
I am deleting one star because of the weird ordering process of having to order and pay for the food separate from your drink. And if you are upstairs, you have to go back downstairs to order food. They do bring it up to you, though.
Simply one of the best beer bars I've ever visited, anywhere. Â For all that NYC has to offer, there is not one establishment here that can match the complete package that is The Avenue Pub in NOLA.
On St. Charles in the Lower Garden District, not far from the warehouse district, its located in a low-key corner white building with blue window shutters. Â Its two levels are related but distinct. Â The lower level is by all appearances a classic, casual neighborhood beer pub, a dark wood-paneled space with bar tables, but its hard to miss the awesome display of 48 taps, sitting front and center at their long bar. Â Those four dozen drafts feature an outstanding selection that is sure to please even a seasoned beer connoisseur. Â The taps predominantly feature draft brews from around the US, with good showing of better Louisiana beers, and international choices veer Belgian; one cask on rotation.
Then there's the mind-boggling bottled list. Â There's probably no beer style not represented in this well-curated, eclectic selection with some rare stuff. Â Here's where the two levels of The Avenue matters. Â Parts of the bottled list, especially the large bottles, are only served upstairs. Â Unlike the downstairs, which is actually open 24/7 and 365 days a year, the upstairs bar has somewhat soft hours of 5 PM to midnight.
The two levels have different vibes, suiting different moods. Â While the downstairs is perfect for a casual, communal pub experience, the upstairs has a quieter ambience, the better in which to taste the big bottles. Â It also has a lovely wrap-around balcony; enjoying a beer here while the sun set was one of my favorite memories in NOLA.
The staff are down-to-earth and straightforward, friendly but don't expect to be coddled. Â We received the short end of one bartender's temper on one visit by heading upstairs at 5 PM when she wasn't ready; but once open, she seemed to have shrugged that off and was fine. Â On another visit, we were surprised with a free order of hush puppies when the staff heard we were New Yorkers (temporarily stranded on account of Hurricane Sandy), done without fanfare. Â The bartenders know the changing beer list reasonably well, so soliciting advice is a good idea if the list proves intimidating. Â The Avenue has a short but comprehensive food list perfectly matched for pub dining. Â I visited in between meals so can't say much about the food, although the hush puppies were freshly fried, a good bar snack.
I'd easily be a regular at The Avenue but alas, our distance is too great. Â No future visit to NOLA will be complete without spending some time at this wonderful beer pub.
Fits every need for a bar in the city:
-great cocktails and unique beer selection
-downstairs with pool and TVs, upstairs with lounge space and a balcony
-yummy yummy yummy bar food
-strategically placed between the Lower Garden District (LGD) and Central Business District (CBD)/ French Quarter
-Just off of the streetcar line
-wonderful
I'm not a big beer drinker so this review is more along the lines of judging Avenue Pub as a venue for large groups. I went there for a party and it was a place I would pick if I were planning an event. The upstairs was spacious, a little limited on the seating, but there is balcony access. Â The bartenders are friendly, but you can't order food upstairs which is a hassle. Their bar offerings are limited but delicious. Have the calamari. Â It comes with a sweet (!!!) aioli that shouldn't be missed.
The restroom upstairs is huge too. Â It's a single, but there's plenty of room for more than one person. Â You know, if you want... I don't know anything about that.
This is THE Craft Beer bar in New Orleans. Open 24/7. Crafty Hour 4 -6 $2 off American Pints.
Rotating taps with things such as Cantillon, Stone Brewing, Green Flash, NOLA, and many more. They always seem to keep things coming and going.
Balcony is a nice spot after 5pm to enjoy a fresh pint.
Pro tip: don't ask for a Bud or Miller-Coors product, you might get a funny look.
This is a beer drinkers paradise destination. (although the J'Anita's food is sorely missed). You will not find a better selection of beer in New Orleans, or many other cities. The owner Polly scours the world for rare kegs coming into the U.S. and does her best to make sure the Pub gets some. If you are visiting and looking for the best taps and bottles in town, get thee to the Pub.
Review Source:Rolling into this pub, I had little idea of what to expect, except maybe the pool table and slot machines here haha. The friend I was staying with and I walked up to the bar and I was surprised to be immediately handed a big menu, with pages upon pages of different beers, bourbon and whiskey, and even some good looking sandwiches!
I was a bit overwhelmed with the choices and just asked the bartender for something hoppy, anything like an IPA, and make it local. The man delivered, handing me back a NOLA Mecha Hopzilla. The hops didn't overwhelm the taste and the IPA had a great finish. Check one.
Realizing our friends were upstairs, I asked if I had to close out my tab downstairs before heading up. "Nope, you don't" was the surprising answer I got back! Check two! I love when I don't have to switch tabs when I'm not even leaving the same place. Heading up, I decided to also order a Grilled Cheese Club with some yummy waffle fries. Getting up there we joined up with good company and it was time for the scotch - I don't try enough Islays so tonight I grabbed a Laphroaig 10 year (not made of money okay!) and drank the night away. The sandwich came soon after and was a gooey, juicy (tomato-filled) delight.
Avenue Pub - giant beer list (lots of drafts), wondrous bourbon, scotch, and whiskey menu, and good food all accompanied by helpful, polite, and sometimes even funny staff.
OH! I almost forgot to mention - for a place this clean and great, I was completely thrown aback by the fact that they're open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Whaaaaaa
Favorite place to drink great beers in nola. I don't leave this place without trying something that I've never heard of. The owner strives to bring in a constantly changing progression of draft beers and the bartenders are mostly well versed in the selection. The atmosphere and service can be an acquired tasted, especially if you're used to suburban life or you have a tourist sign on your forehead. That said, it has a neighborhood feel and once you've talked to a bartender or two about the beers, the real reason to be there shines through
Review Source:Wow. This is probably the best bar I have ever been to. There is nothing about this place I do not like. The staff is extremely friendly, the food is good, the beer list is exceptional, and the atmosphere is wonderful.
The selection is incredible. Good selection of american crafts, geuzes, lambics, stouts, etc. We had lots of Cantillon when we were here. I love the fact that it's quiet enough to have a conversation at a normal volume.
The bar is extremely comfortable and sitting on the balcony with a good beer is absolutely perfect. The bartenders and the clientele were excellent. I talked with them about our shared passion for beer and met some really nice interesting people. They have a beer on cask on Fridays, which is awesome. It also seems like they have lots of nights were they pull out really special brews or have release parties and things of the sort. Also the fact that you can come here on Christmas Day at 6:00 am since it is 24/7 365 is really cool.
The food also impressed. I had an oyster sandwich that had spinach dip and cocktail sauce on it(i forgot what it was called) and it was awesome.
Honestly, this place was so great that it almost makes me want to move back to New Orleans, something I vowed to never do again. I Â can't recommend this place enough.
Beautiful spot for beer lovers... posers should go somewhere else!
The beautiful barmaid working there on the afternoon we arrived not only knew which beers to recommend but also how to property pour and server them
The bar maintains the correct glassware and lighting (bright enough) to appreciate beer...
Thankfully they do not have amstel or heineken...
Visited January 2012
I had a friend visiting from out of town who is really into beer so I suggested this place because I'd heard so much about it.
I was not impressed, but I'm not a beer person. Yes, the beer selection is impressive and so was the crab bisque and the cheese plate. That's about it.
I walked in and was very turned off by how smokey it was at 6:45 pm on a Monday. My friend had just made a comment last week about smokey bars so I knew this wasn't gonna go over well. Â Then I saw the sign that said the upstairs was non-smoking and went up there. No, you can't smoke upstairs, but until you change the laws of physics or the ventilation of the building, you might as well be able to.
The service was really bad. My friend and I sat at the table looking at the menu (that we got ourselves) for a good 15 minutes with no one asking if we needed anything. The bartenders chould have easily asked without even having to leave the bar. We had to go downstairs to order food and the type of beer that my friend wanted. The lady working the food portion of the bar had one earphone in her ear while she was taking our order and we had to repeat ourselves a few times because by this time the bar had gotten more crowded. It always seemed like the people working were annoyed when we'd order something or ask a question.
Then they ran out of the beer my friend had been drinking. I know this happens, but on top of everything else it was frustrating.
I'd go here again if a group wants to go or I'm entertaining another "beer" person but for me this place just didn't live up to the hype. The vibe was weird and I never felt comfortable.
One of the best bars I have been to anywhere.. An ultra chill place that I can relax and enjoy the great sounds in the Garden District. Â Always one of my first stops in New Orleans. Order food from the right bar, only certain beers are served at the balcony, Sometimes they have BBQ from a neighboring spot, but their food is always great pub grub. Â Two main areas, a downstairs that allows smoking, and upstairs/balcony that is smoke free. I cannot get enough of the old world French/Cajun look and feel of the place. Just perfect for a laid back and enjoyable session. I can people watch and sip on great beer all day on the balcony.
The service is great, everyone is very Knowledgeable and enthusiastic about what they have to offer. They know beer and how to serve it to a T. The food I had was very good. Smoked sausage, pulled pork, and pasta salad. Everything was great, along with their already great menu.
The selection is awesome. A handful of LA locals, but none of those are any good outside of NOLA. They do a cask Friday which is great. Happened to be Saint Arnold from Houston. The rest of the tap list ranges from Green Flash, Saint Somewhere, Dieu du Ciel, and Prof Fritz 1809. All are in good to great condition. Believe it or not the bottle list is even more impressive. Cantillon, JW Lees, Drie Fonteinen, Evil Twin, etc, etc.
One of the best places to have a beer in the Country, period. Just awesome, and I can't recommend this place enough.
I've only been to Avenue Pub a handful of times-- mainly because I end up spending way too much money here to be a regular. But watch out if I win the Powerball.
Every trip has been nothing short of fantastic. I've never ordered any of their food, just enjoyed a small sampling of their gigantic beer offering. (I have, however, picked up BBQ from the NOLA Smokehouse Pop Up on Sundays. Yum, but that's another review.)
Did I mention the ginormous, ridiculous variety of beer? I'm talking about a multi-page menu of beer the likes of which I've never seen before. And, this is not the usual corporate-approved beer menu found at places like The Bulldog, this is a hand-picked, ever-changing selection of beer cultivated with love by someone who knows what they're doing. Many of the choices are limited and when they're gone, they're gone.
I love beer. All beer, I don't discriminate. I'm not above a High Life, in fact it's often my first choice. It's kind of like how I love a good burger, but every once in a while, I like to splurge and enjoy a big, fat ribeye. I feel the same way about beer and Avenue Pub is my go-to spot when it's time to splurge on beer.
Final bar stop to our whirlwind of eateries and drunkaries.
Came in after our race and decided to have a cool brewski and an appy. The menu consisted of various beers and appys. The kitchen is separate from the bar so you have to order your food on the other side of the establishment. We opted for the beer battered onion rings to curb the hunger. BLAND!
Our bartender was nice and I opted for the Unibroue Ephemere Cassis. Although she wasn't able to give me a sample (sip), she indicated that she was able to give me a 4oz taster. I was good since I was on detox mode from a weekend full of drinking and running!
You get your own water from a jug and, if you need condiments, you have to walk back to the kitchen area to ask the staff over there.
Good beer selection, but wasn't impressed with the appy and how the kitchen was separate from the bar.
The Avenue Pub is a cool place.
I had only been here once before during Mardi Gras, and that was to use the restroom. Ever since I read many of the Yelp reviews, I knew I wanted to come back.
Located on world famous St. Charles Ave, the Avenue Pub is aptly named. This pub has a large beer selection, is in a cool old building, and has a great view from the upstairs balcony.
When a friend and I entered, I knew I would like this place. While not a true dive (The beer selection is too good), I would classify it as an upscale dive. The bar is not pretentious despite its prime location on the uptown parade route.
We ordered some beers and went upstairs. This was my favorite area. I love bars with a view, and the view of the avenue is excellent. Sure you're looking at a speedy oil change, but you can also watch joggers, cars, and the streetcar roll by. If you like bars with couches (I do), there is a wooden couch on the balcony.
The beer selection is very good. Jefferson Stout was on tap so I was a happy camper. My drinking companion ordered a pumpkin beer which was awful. That was easily corrected when the next round was a Stella, but use caution when ordering some unknown beer. They don't all taste great.
I am a fan of this bar. I look forward to many more drinks here.
I like it. I really, *really* like it!! Watch out, yelpers, I may just start gushing...
Avenue Pub has a whole bunch of elements that are unique to New Orleans' bar/eateries, but it's definitely in a league of its own and defies *all* expectations.
First, the beer list is just mind boggling. I can't go into specifics here, as I don't drink beer, but our very friendly and knowledgeable bartender informed us that there are a variety of imports that are only available at The Avenue Pub-often only while supplies last- and you can't likely get these anywhere else in the US. That's pretty cool, especially when you consider there's no elitist attitude to be found. You don't expect to get some rare Belgian ale in a chill place like this. Yes, that's a good thing. I'm going to just put this out there: a couple more wine choices would be awesome! Though I also appreciate a place that does one thing and does it well. But... Avenue Pub does more than one thing well, so there ya go. Wine! For us winos!
Then there's the food. You expect it to be greasy spoon fare, but then you see the menu has a nice mix of drunky food (nachos) and stuff like a cheese plate from St. James. Niiiice. This is extremely appealing and allowed for me to not succumb to a platter of fried food. Oh, it's there, believe me, but then you see the hummus and think that would be a better idea. Which is was. Holy gods of hummus. It's homemade and better than I've had in some Mediterranean eateries. Again, you don't expect that. You expect them to throw a few tablespoons of Sabra and dress it with olives and paprika, if they are feeling fancy, but not at The Avenue Pub. Just be prepared for the garlic. Seriously... And I dare you to not scarf down the huge bowl of it. Luckily I had no plans with Eric Northman later on. That would have been tragic.
This place is huge (seems like it was once an apartment house) and the surroundings are modest, but clean and comfy, despite its faux-seedy intentions. I mean, it's downright adorable upstairs (opens at 5pm), which has a more chill vibe than the lively downstairs area. As in, you may feel like you're drinking in someone's secret clubhouse. I *LOVE* the murals on the winding old stairway leading up. And the balcony!! It overlooks St. Charles Avenue and is just insanely idyllic. The rest of the country can weep through the snow and cold while we sit on a balcony in January in 70 degree weather. That's right. Weep, motherfuckers (you know I love you, my friends to the North :)
They have plenty of specials ($1 off on Sundays/Mondays), events (Wednesday tastings, anyone?) so keep an eye on their calendar.
To paraphrase Bette Davis' epic line from "Dark Victory", Â I think I'll have a large order of....prognosis negative , er.... make that Unibroue Trois Pistoles, Nola Blonde and Tin Roof Amber!
Came here at the recommendation of the awesome NO Yelpers and was so glad we did. Â Went upstairs where we met some very friendly people, had a great bartender and got a terrific seat on the rooftop porch outside.
Didn't try the food because had dinner plans but what I saw looked good. Beer selection was stunning. Â I liked that they had plenty of local brews by Nola and Lazy Magnolia.
Great beer selection, great vibe, cool people. Â Avenue Pub is a place for people who appreciate good beer to come and enjoy beer and fellowship.
If I lived in town, I'd be here every week. I didn't try the food, but the people around me were eating some stuff that was making my mouth water. The bartender guided us through the massively impressive beer menu with grace and ease, pointing us in the tastiest of directions.
The best part is the priced-to-sell beer flights/samples. If your 10 oz beer is $4.00, your 4 oz. mini-beer is $1.60. We took advantage of that and tried nearly 10 beers (include two full-sized) for just $12. Considering we'd paid almost twice that for two drinks the night before at a different bar, we were definitely pleased.
