B2O is a good spot for group of friends who needs a late night drinking spot with some food to much on. But there are few downsides to this place. Here's my breakdown:
+Open til 2AM on Fri and Sat.
+Buy 1 pitcher get 1 pitcher free deal.
+Nice owner. If he thinks your group can't finish the pitcher that was placed in order or they're almost closing, he'll give you a card instead so you can redeem your pitcher of beer next time you visit.
+Parking available behind the restaurant.
-Old Chinese people hangout here. Sometimes they get so trashed and they start picking a fight with each other. Last time I was there, some dude got so pist he started yelling at his friend so loud and broke one of the beer glasses. So trashy.
-Food is okay. Spicy lamb rib's flavor was good but it barelyyyyyyyyy had any meat and was mostly bone. :( Fried tofu is hard to mess up and grilled mushroom was straight up grilled mushroom.. no seasoning. Ew.
Food 2/5
- Taiwanese sausage $3 - Sweet and tasty, but dry.
- Spicy Lamb Ribs $ 8.50 - Super salty and dry! I probably wouldn't be able to say how bad this was if I was drunk....too bad I wasn't. I think there were more chili in the plate than actual lamb ribs. This entree is pretty horrible.
Drinks: 4/5
- Choice for pitcher option included amber and Budweiser drafts. Its $13.50 for the 1st pitcher but BOGO so as long as you order pitchers in pairs, it comes out to be $6.75 each. Not bad at all.
- Corona - $3
- Ask for larger mugs if you feel dainty drinking from the small shot-like beer glasses.
Ambiance 3/5
Coming here on a weeknight I wasn't expecting too much. There were only about 3 other groups there, with one being a large birthday get together. If it wasn't for them, I don't think there would have been much life in the bar that night. I thought from the reviews that "plenty of TVs" meant that viewing the NBA playoffs would be easy. But the TVs seem to be more of an afterthought with drinking and eating being the focus of B2O. The TVs aren't very big. Some of them aren't even true HD and the front left TV has a fishbowl effect going for it. But I can see this place getting rowdy with the right company and playing drinking games.
Great alternative to Uncle Yu's Indian restaurant. They serve the same style food and draft beer. I usually go with co workers to watch a game and have some beers. They have beer pitcher specials (BOGO). The food is pretty decent. This place is more of a drinking lounge than restaurant as the general crowd usually plays drinking games, which I don't mind as I'm usually one of them. This place is generally easier on the wallet compared to Indian as well.
Review Source:No one can beat buy one and get another pitcher for free deal. I love their Taiwanese bar food. It goes so well with drinking. You have to deal with the fact that this place is dirty and divey. Some might say that just makes the place authentic enough to remind them of home (Taiwan). If you can look pass the dirtiness, then this place combines both drinking and eating well.
Review Source:To be brutally honest.... I do not like the food here whatsoever. Â
But what makes this place 2 stars in my book rather than a total complete 1 star fail is their pitchers of half tea and half beer. Â
Only times I'll drink beer are:
1. Â There is no other chaser Â
2. Soju bombs, sake bombs and Irish car bombs
3. Â B2O's half tea half beer. Â
Yum.
I've been dragged here on a few occasions and cannot stand it. Â Maybe it's 'cause I'm not Taiwanese, but I just can't stand the dice game... the noise from the slamming-dice-on-the-table irritates me. Â The only plus is the cheap beer, but in this case, I'd rather stay away!
And beware....Sheriff's station is directly across the street and trust me.. they are watching.
This place is a dive and it's rated C! Â I think that answers 95% of all your questions. Â Here's the remainder 5%... the place cranks loud music with it's generic system, people in there are all half drunk and screaming while they talk, the tables and chairs are all sticky, the sidewalk is dirty and filled with old sticky gum. and the food doesn't look appetizing.
The only good thing I agreed on is... beer is cheap! about $5 for a bottle of Taiwanese beer. Â Would I ever eat here? I'll keep it a mystery!
Until I see that red capital "C" getting an upgrade, then we'll see.
I think B20 is a great place. It's a Taiwanese restaurant that serve Amberbock beer, which is cool. They got all the cups to play dice games and you can never order just 1 pitcher... i'm not kidding... the pitchers are buy one get one free...
the cool part is if you can't drink your second pitcher, they give you a voucher to redeem it when you come back! That's awesome! and smart.
The food is pretty good but there maybe a wait at times... while nothing is spectacular, everything is great though.
The place was packed that particular evening. Music was blasting away through their small sound system. Why are all the places I've been to lately so loud? So hard to have a decent conversation. I'm hard of hearing as it is...
Service was slow. Took forever to put some menus on the table. Took forever to take the order. Took forever to get the check (they take credit card, but not AMEX).
Had the fried stinky tofu and the strawberry colada (virgin). The former only had a slight aroma to it. The texture on the outside wasn't very crispy, nor the flavor noticeable. The sauce was runny. On the other hand, the latter was decent though: good size glass mug, thick drink density, with a nice mix of strawberry and coconut, and a slight tingle in my mouth to boot.
Seems like there are a lot of regulars here; a place where everyone knows your name. Hopefully they won't remember mine, because I don't plan on coming back.
I've been wanting to try B2O Cafe for a while, primarily because they serve stinky tofu.
Service - 2/5
I don't expect service to be exceptional at a Taiwanese bar, but it took way too long to just get a menu and then to finally order.
Stinky Tofu - 2/5 ($6.95) http://www.yelp.com/biz_…
There was no stink, no stank, nothing that made this dish great. From the hard texture of the tofu to the watery sauce, I can honestly say that I've had better.
Atmosphere - 2/5
This place used to be a Thai food restaurant and I'm guessing they kept some of their nautical themed decorations. Their multi-colored Christmas lights made the theme even more random, now it's Christmas on a boat.
Oh and if it wasn't loud enough in this place, the owner kept the volume on the radio cranked up. At least the music (from a radio station) got better towards the end of my stay. I have never seen so many people get up so frequently to go outside and have a smoke. If you were one of the smokers, you weren't following the rules of smoking 20 feet away from an open-able door or window!!
Side note - If you've never been to a Taiwanese bar before, they serve pitchers with very small beer glasses, makes you think that you've had more glasses of beer ;)
Eat before you come here, just order beer!
My friends said this place is better so we came here give it a try. We were told it was buy one pitcher get one free by the owner & the waitress. Guess what... by the time we paid they said the deal was over and we end up had to paid for all of the pitchers. Food here is okay, had better from other similar places. Wouldn't come back here again...
What's the motif of this place kiddies?? No not the beer or 'bar-ish' atmosphere (if you can even claim it to be a bar, frankly it looks to be lost in translation). The motif of this place is SALT!! Yes, salt.
Why on earth would someone say something like that? Well take for example their fried calamari or fried oysters, you don't taste the calamari or the oysters, you taste breading and salt! MASSIVE amounts of salt! If I needed to take in extra sodium for a big race, I would still not come here.
Yes, I totally understand their position in adding ridiculous amounts of salt to the food; it's to get you to drink more cheap beer. I get that, but when you customers start to develop hypertension and die from sodium overload, you actually lose business eh? Short term gains, long term loss are their business model.
You can come in with good blood pressure, good cholesterol, non-hyper intensive and leave a whole eff-up person after. I mean, I'll be the first to admit I'll add salt to any dish; as a matter of fact I often carry salt with me everywhere I go, extra sodium for exercise is beneficial for hydration, but when a place puts more salt then I can tolerate, that's saying a whole lot.
Oh and I read the other reviews, and I humbly agree; the pitcher of beer here is horrible. Their regular beer tastes like watered down light beer, and the light beer (probably) taste like watered down water. If you still decide to come here, you're better off ordering bottles of Heinekens.
Cheers,
-Herbal Tea
Don't order the fried squid ($8). Â It's soggy and tasted undercooked. Â We ate a couple of pieces and left the entire plate alone after that. Â The owner saw that we were disgusted with the dish and didn't even bother to come over and asked if everything was fine. Â
Don't know why some postings states that the beer is cheap. Â It was $12.50 a pitcher. Â
The service was prompt, but they weren't too friendly. Â I said hi to the waitress and she responded by asking me if I'm ready to order. Â She kept a stoic face the entire time. Â Maybe she's not authorized to smile.
I actually left the Green Island to check this place out. Â What a mistake. Â Green Island down the street sells a pitcher for $10.50. Â And after 9:30 pm, it's buy one get one free.
I won't be coming back here again.
a taiwanese bar and grill, almost hidden on the little corner next to Yoshinoya. Â Decorated with snowboards, rackets and jerseys, this sport themed taiwanese pub is a a place frequented by many for their cheap beer and bomb asss beer foods. Â All their foods are made with a stronger taste which goes great with their Taiwan Beer and dice game.
Personal favorites include:
-Fish Fillet with Szechuan Sauce
-Spicy Beef Noodle
-Sauteed Yellow Fish
-beef/lamb/chicken heart sticks
would be coming back again and again and again.
check out my pictures :)
This place gets a four just because I had a blast with my friends the last time we went.
The bad (that I can remember of): You have to order a minimum number of dishes or something in order to drink. Limited choices of beer. A bit understaffed so service is slow when it gets crowded. The place is small.
The good: I don't believe I've met the owner (who seems to get a bad rep off of here).
The in-between: The sheriff is right across the street (could be a good and bad thing, I don't think they would bother people that close). The food is pretty standard, but we only ordered a few side dishes like fried squid.
It was my friend's birthday when I last came here, he wasn't going to do anything so I called up a couple of our friends and decided to come here because it was local. We did a bit of prepartying before we came so everything started in the right mood. The customers there bought us a few rounds and we all threw away our sobriety together. We got pretty loud and whatnot then the store waited for us to leave before they closed, the waitress was rather patient about it. Overall a a pretty good experience, but I could say its only because of the people that accompanied me.
B2O is another one of the "Taiwanese Pubs" in San Gabriel. If you've got a craving for Taiwanese beer and food and Indian Restaurant is too packed, then B2O is the best place to go. The best part about it is that B2O is no more than 5 minutes away from Indians. B2O is a smaller than Indians. However, it is just as lively and there are just as many people doing the Asian squat smoking outside as Indians.
I'm not sure what kind of beer B2O has on tap and bottled, but they have my hei pi (dark beer) and that's good enough for me. It is also usually buy 1 get 1 free too so that's even better! B2O also provides dice and poker cards so you can play whatever drinking game you want. Of course after you drink, you might want to get something to eat right?
The food at B2O is pretty good. They have Taiwanese favorites like Chou Dofu (Stinky Tofu) and Yang Ruo Chuan (Lamb Skewers), but my favorite items to get at B2O are the Bacon Wrapped Asparagus and Spicy Beef Noodle.
Remember: Don't drink and drive. Especially because there's a sheriff station across the street.
Fun Taiwanese eats and local bar, play dice game and drink bar. Small joint, street parking, and Taiwanese folks.
Parking: Street
Food: Taiwanese Eats, and Bar food. Â Tea Peanuts, tea and beer. Decent
Service: They come to you sometimes, but you can always wave them down.
Causal joint. Fun place. Â Play dice games provided by the place.
We had native Chinese speakers with us, and it was still pretty uncomfortable. Â Â I've never felt so uncomfortable while drinking a beer in my life. Â
We asked about the beer special - and was told to order food (3 items) - sure my friend responds in Chinese, how about appetizers, we just ate.
"UMM but i make SO little money, please help me fund this place. Â The beer is cheaper than ice tea!"
yeah dude, thats exactly what we asked. Â Â 5 minutes and 2 pitchers later, we left.
Good deal, six people drinking lots of alcohol and the bill came out $58. I think we got 8 pitchers and some appetizers. Cheap! I believe the deal is buy 1 get 1 free pitcher.
Downside: the crowd can be fairly ghetto and unpleasant. In fact, while we were there, the table across from us kept staring at us. Yeah, a bit uncomfortable. Don't surprised if a fight breaks out.
Conclusion: cheap drinks, but at a price.
This place is too small and the owner pisses me off. How can you force your customers to order food just because you aren't making much profit off them... And he acts like he's your pal when you obviously don't even know him. He seriously tries too hard to be a "people person". As for the food, it's alright.
The beer is pretty watered down too...
This place is nice to hang out and drink beer/eat food with friends. If you don't drink beer but don't mind watching people drink beer... then its good too. Cute little cups btw.
Their other drinks may not be their specialty. A papaya shake = weird tasting slush thing. I drank it because yes, the food was salty and I was thirsty. Â So stick with beer which I hear is delicious/awesome/cheap.
Food is like a small taiwanese place... popcorn chicken, squid balls, stinky tofu, fried rice, stir fry noodles... nothing special just average.
I like the atmosphere and listening to taiwanese music though. Waitresses are pretty attentive.
Parking looks a little difficult... but park in the plaza next door (with yoshinoya and wamu) and you're fine.
I don't know about drinking here since I came here for food.
Uh oh... BAD IDEA!
The food were alright, the Black Pepper Beef was good though but the Three Cup Chicken was definitely a disappointment. We didn't get beer and maybe that's why both of us (my friend and I) needed two small cups of B2O Iced tea and got charged twice per person.
The crowd was alright, not too busy but not too empty either. But the service, that was horrible. The waitresses were so dumb that they just looked at us many times and then finally get to us. They even let a table of people left WITHOUT paying. The guy that owned the place was nice though, he was nice enough to come to our table on his own for passing the menu and giving us the check! Overall, I think there are better competitors out there.
oook so I've been eyeing this place for (literally) years now and I 've never gone.. mainly because I'd always end up @ indian or jurassic, but my friend and I suddenly thought of this place last night and really wanted to try it out. Since indian is still @ the top of my list.. i'll be comparing this place to indian a lot.I got there @ about 12, and the place, being as small as it is (think 1/2 or 1/3 the size of indian), was packed. The wait was quick though since one group left shortly after we got there. The moment i got in.. I heard pretty much everyone playing dice games and 15 20 Â (i'm slooowly getting better) and it seemed like the crowd there was pretty rowdy. which is a good thing since that means they're having fun
Drinks:
Since I went with one friend, we didn't order much to drink. I got a large bottle of tw beer, and my friend got a glass of watermelon juice. Her watermelon juice was nice n sweet! so thats good. Their menu is pretty good for a small place like that. I'm not sure about the price of their pitchers of beer.. but the other tables didn't seem to stop ordering them, so i'm assuming is was relatively cheap.
Food:
I ordered a lot of food for 2 people, we ate/drank before we got there, so we were just kinda piggn out. We got the stinky tofu, house/combination fried rice, and grilled corn. All three items were pretty good i think. The fried rice was surprisingly good, and the stinky tofu was better than indian (imo) It was also apparently REALLY stinky because the guy from a few tables over started barking at us tell us that it smelled stinky and gave us a thumbs up. I'll try the other stuff next time i go with more ppl
Theme/environment:
their theme is much more ambient than indian.. as the restaurant was much darker. I wish it was a bit larger though so it could accommodate larger groups. Also like i said earlier everyone was playing drinking games.. I really wanted to go to the other tables and challenge them to 15 20.. but after hearing their pace.. i didn't even try
Overall I'll definitely come back. Next time hopefully i'll bring enough ppl so i can try everything and take over 1/2 the place (since its kinda small) It gets 5 stars for being such a great hang out place with good food and drinks @ reasonable prices (although i'll need to investigate the beer prices next time though)
Seems like a lot of people have a beef with B2O. Â I can understand why. Â Ironically, it's the same reason I love the place. Â First of all, fuck yes it's a dive. Â The B is not an upscale fusion nightspot. Â It's a place to grab eight or ten of your more entertaining friends, take over half the restaurant, gorge on better than average Taiwanese beer hall food, and get stupid drunk, without blowing a week's pay. Â If walk through the door with that mindset, you'll either leave happy or passed out, so either way you win.
There seems to be some confusion regarding the price of beer. Â Beer is eleven something a pitcher, but when a couple people order food, you get two pitchers for the price of one. Â This policy remains in effect for the rest of the night regardless of whether or not you order more food. Â Six dollar pitchers and a couple plates of fried oysters and you've got yourself a hell of a deal.
Atmosphere? Asians ranging from moderately buzzed to passed out in the bathroom, yelling at each other to be heard over the din of whatever's on the TV's, other loud tables, and the constant rattle of shaking dice cups. Â There's also a smattering of non asian folk as well. Â It's not a super fobby joint. Â Bonus points for the Los Angeles County Sherriff's Temple City station being directly across the street. Â Amazingly, I have never seen serious drama here, and I wonder if that might be partly why.
Be advised the kitchen closes around midnight. Â You gotta play bullshit if you have a big group, make sure to ask for dice. Come early on weekends if you want seating, and consider coming really early for a pregame spot if you want to head somewhere a little classier later in the evening.
After writing this review the first time around, one of my companion notified me that the pitcher of beer was really $11.50. It was not the bargain of $5 I originally led to believe.
$11.50 for a pitcher of beer??? Ahh gaz!
If I knew it was that crummy expensive, I would never bothered with another round of their watered down pissed water for beer. After going through the hassle of an ending (read my original review for that details), I am wondering what is so good about this place.
In the end, there is really nothing that would compel me in ever recommending people to come to this beer house. Go to Kan Pai in Rowland Heights or Indian Restaurant in SGV. This place is just a huge letdown and now an expensive place for a pitcher of beer.
$11.50 for a pitcher of watered down beer??.....eff'd this place!
I don't agree with those negative reviews given to this place. I think B2O is trying pretty hard to compete with Indian Beer House and besides the decoration, (which is not too bad considered their food price), the food was decent and the waitresses were nice.
If you intend to go to a restaurant to check out hot waitresses, then maybe this is not the best place. But if you just want a relaxing dinner/beer time with friends, then this is a very good choice!
Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, this is probably the 'UN-cool'est, worst place EVER!
I was surprised to see they're still around. I'd have write this minus review & put it on top of my minus scale long time ago if I knew their name is B2O cafe, their Chinese name is 'Cool Bar' which is really, somewhat ironic if you ask me.
Aside from the food, which I have to say are decent (I have to be fair). BUT, the problem is this is one of those places you know is just trying wayyyyyy too hard. Well, at least, the owner was.
Like other yelper said, you'd only see 1-2 waitress there (probably an attempt to save cost, really). The waitress would try their best on serving you if gets crowded. Â Again, another one of those Chinese restaurant thing-you take what you get. They do 'try to do' a good job on playing the latest Chinese pop on the LCD screen to entertain customers, make it cool, etc. but....
here's the story (year ago, when they first open up):
we have this friend who is known for finding discount/promotion when it comes to dining out, me & my other friend could careless & never would have come to this place if it wasn't the friend insisted we should give a try on this new pub in town & we would get some discount.
As we finish the meal, the friend who invited us pulls the invitation and
ask if we could get the promo. discount (which for 3 people comes to only few bucks, big deal~). Â The owner came in and spend about good 10 min. with my friend argue about the date of the promo. has been expired. Â Me & my other friend was more or less at the point right out the bat say okay, let's just pay and go. Â It got me & my other friend really annoyed when the owner & my cheap-ass friend getting 'technical' about the legitimacy of the flyer coupon when we already decided to just pay & leave.
er.... Â So, there you have it, you know when people is trying way too hard/set on their mind, it does get annoyed, really UNCOOL. Hopefully you don't have to go thru. what me & my other friend have to went thru. Â Find some 'COOLer' place. Seriously.
Although I prefer the food at the Indian, this place is a little quieter and more subtle. Note: I only come to either place during the week.
The clay pot squid and fried oysters are pretty good here and the sauteed vegetables are excellent. I also liked the kimchi that they serve you at the beginning of your meal. I am a fan of the do-it-yourself artwork on the walls. The location is pretty non-descript and hard to find but on the plus side I don't think parking is ever much of a problem in this area.
My friends LOVE this place. Some of them go too much. haha!! You can find them there and drink with them.
The only TWO things i like about this place is the cheap beer...you could definitely get drunk off of those! very good deal...AND some of the food there. I am addicted to the peanuts and spicy cabbage they serve.
If you go at night, esp. during the weekends, the place is SOOOO loud! i can barely hear myself scream! all the sounds of people yelling, screaming, talking bounces of the walls and the door is closed. I guess if you like yelling at the top of your lungs, then that is cool. OMG, my friend literally lost his voice the next day ! ahhaah so bring earplugs if you go
The staff is very friendly...hmmm
Oh, and i like drawing on the walls, just ask them for markers!
To sum it up, Â this is a place that is sort of like Indian, but has cheaper beer. That's probably why it is packed..
NOTE: if you are going to be drinking a lot, be sure to SOBER up before you drive! because the police station is right across the street! =)
Chicken butt, chicken tongue, chicken heart... Things you like to eat?
Dark Taiwan beer on tap: $9.95/pitcher + "Buy 1, get one free" special... Â maybe now?
Never really been to a "Taiwanese Beerhouse" until my friends introduced me to Indian Restaurant some time ago. Since then, I've made a couple trips back to Taiwan and gone to one (maybe two) where it all began.
If you're unfamiliar with the concept, I see Taiwanese beerhouses as a social (very casual) restaurant where friends gather to drink beer out of small "triple-shot" glasses, eat boiled peanuts and bbq skewers of various anatomical origins of various animals.
Though I'm not the biggest fan of the chicken butt and chicken tongue... I'd go into detail, but if you haven't tried these things before, I'd probably scare you from even coming here and trying the more "normal" food. They do have normal skewers meats, like chicken thigh, breast, as well as (I think) pork and beef.
We also ordered fried rice, a very-garlic-y stir-fried vegetable, as well as an "herbal" taiwanese soup. Everything was quite tasty...
Maybe it was because we arrived early (in beerhouse time) at around 630-7 -- on a rainy day, or maybe because I have significantly different tastes then other Yelpers... but the only eyecandy that was present was the one my friends sitting across the table had the pleasure of seeing.
You want to know what?
Chicken butt!
No, really! Tony C. made me eat chicken butt here. He lauded it as one of the best things there ever as you heard his future wifey say in the background, "Baby...gross..." He fervently swore by it and handed a skewer to me and Greg A. to try.
"...is this the rectum of a chicken or is it the muscles of the butt?" I asked with some unease. It's not like I'm shy to eat the gastrointestinal part of an animal since I'd usually eat chicharon na bituka (Filipino deep fried pork (or chicken) intestines ) with no problem. Tony C. assured me that it the tailbone part of a chicken...so all was well because if it was indeed the rectum where poop normally sits, I don't know if I would've ate it.
Tony C. proceeded to teach us the right way of eating it: start from the outside, work your way around to the inside, and don't eat the tailbone. Â Â I surprisingly liked it and I was still alive after that.
Everything else here was swell. It was a small Taiwanese place with a buy one, get one free pitcher of beer deal. I scarfed all the peanuts down and tasted the infamous stinky tofu, sausages with garlic, Chinese style kim chi, and more chicken. There's tons of parking by the plaza on the Rosemead / Las Tunas intersection. All and all, not too bad for the first Taiwanese food place I've been to...and I'll definitely order the chicken butt next time.
If this place is closer to me, and iwill come here often for food. It's a typical taiwanese cheap beer place. THey do have some authentic taiwanese food (spicy) and stinky tofu. lol!!! Their chicken is good, and the fried noodle is good.
it's not even half of stinky smell compare to the one from Asia. However, you need to come to this place super early they are cause they are kinda small. If you are more than 5. then you need reservation. You can keep drinking beer cuz it's buy 1 get 1 free. Everyone speaks mandarin here not english or i can get by with my cantonese.
5 people drinks like 4 pitchers and 6 dishes of food, and it's like $60 only. Good deal!!! you can only get it in SGV.
B20 is a dive-y hole-in-the-wall taiwanese beerhouse. Â The food here is better than the other local taiwanese beerhouses. Â Their crispy stinky tofu strips were excellent. Â And having lived in China I've seen (and smelled) my share of stinky tofu. Â Their basil chicken was tasty as well. Â Don't order the chicken tail.
It's a cool place to have a beer, catch up with buddies, and people-watch. Â Good eyecandy. The graffiti-friendly walls add a nice touch. Â The crowd ranges from 20s to early 30s.
On my last trip to LA, I wanted to go to Indian restaurant which is this good Taiwanese restaurant/pub where the waitresses all dress up like Native Americans. Â Definitely not PC, but hey, that's how we roll I guess....
So instead of that restaurant, my best friend suggested that we go to B2O where the food is similar but cheaper and buy one pitcher get one pitcher free of BEEEER. Â How can you go wrong with that?
Well, the food was all just average but left me craving for the food at Indian Restaurant bc the food there is just better and service not as awkward.
We had:
- three spices squid + chicken
- Taiwanese style chow mein (really good)
- eggs + shrimp (okay)
and some other dish I can't remember what it was. Â I did like the peanuts and kimchee they serve bc that went well with the beer, and their house special iced teas are quite tasty as well. Â I just don't remember it to be THAT great.
But it's good enough for what it is. Â The service although awkward, was friendly. Â You can tell this is a small business and they're trying to make do. Â I'd go back if I was in the neighborhood.
*The owner suggested if you like spicy to get their boiling stinky tofu....apparently it's their specialty. Â I didnt try it myself, but just relaying the message.
Randomly hidden on the streets of Temple City is the most awkward place I have ever been to. Â Feast your eyes on an authentic Taiwanese bar/pub where all you hear are screaming Chinese folks red off their asses speaking in Mandarin. Â It instantly brought me back memories of Taipei. Hesitant at first to try this joint, a friend recommended it saying the food was quite cheap.
The menu and dishes were extensive, lots to choose from. Â The waitresses straight from Taiwan greet you with water, Chinese style kim chi and some wet boiled peanuts that looked like testicles.
After the initial shock that it was so fobalicious in here, I settled down and looked at their beer selection. Your typical flavors of:
Taiwan Beer
Saporro
Tsingdao
Then you go to the section of "Korean Soju" where there is no brand, but comes $10 a bottle. Hey, I figured why not try it. Â It was some random brand that I have never seen in my life in a really heavy green bottle. Random. Tasted OK.
Then you have the section of Draft beer. They have Bud and "Black Stout"... we decided to try the black stout and caution here.. the cups they give you are about a triple shot glass. Clearly they are a strong advocate of the century club or something here. Â The draft black stout was actually really good. Light and tasty, not a bitter aftertaste at all. Great thing about it? It was buy one get one free pitcher... so a pitcher of beer worked out to be $5. WTH?!!! $5 pitchers?? EVERYTHING JUST GOT A LITTLE BETTER!!
After taking shots of soju and beer, we all got a little happy within 15 minutes. We ordered some quite delicious Taiwanese appetizers.
*Fried Tofu with a really delicious garlic dipping sauce. These were so good hot. Be careful, but they actually melt when eaten hot. Highly recommended.
*Chicken Wings. There were 4 pieces. I didn't try them but I heard they were pretty good.
*House Special Fried Rice- filled with Chinese Lop Chong Sausages, jalapenos, and frozen vegetables. It was just whatever.
*Salt and Pepper Calamari- for some reason, it was really tough and chewy. Didn't particularly like this dish that much
*Stewed Chicken with Basil Leaves. This was very very tasty. Â Great with beer. It was a bit salty and garlicy.
Come to think about it, everything was either really garlic-y or salty... but remember... $5 pitchers of beer! You can't go wrong!!!
Overall, I would say this place is really a 3 star joint. Loud red screaming fobs like immigration is coming would be my best description... but they did play NBA playoffs on the TV and the $5 pitchers were stellar... that bumped it up to a 4 star place. Â Would come here again... not for dinner, but more like a place to get piss drunk with friends close to home.
