Third Saturday Swing at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio is one of my favorite places to get my Lindy on! Â The dance floor isn't quite as crowded compared to other places I've danced at. Â I went on a hot summer night and there were plenty of fans to help cool myself off. Â
You can park on the street, provided that you turn your wheels or else you will get ticketed. Â You can also park in the parking lot by Food 4 Less, where there is plenty of space and lighting at night. Â The cover charges are inexpensive: $8 (before 11 p.m.) and $3 (after 11 p.m.). Â Refreshments are free; at the time I went to the dance, they had pizza, chips, veggies and ranch dip, chocolate M&Ms, cookies, mini Snickers, and other snacks to recoop those calories you lost in that intense Lindy session. Â :-) Â The dance runs until the wee hours of 1 a.m. and raffle/door prizes are given, such as a free pass to a Third Saturday Swing Dance, a free pass to LindyGroove (a Thursday night Swing Dance also in Pasadena), and a free dance lesson (such as a lesson at Something Blue, which is a Blues evening dance).
If you are new to Swing Dancing/Lindy Hop, take the free Beginner Class, which starts at 8 p.m. (30 minutes before the Evening Dance). Â You don't need to bring a partner because you will rotate with different people.
What I really like about Third Saturday Swing is that I get the opportunity to dance with fun and friendly Lindy Hoppers of all different dance skill levels: from newbies to dancers who are more advanced than myself (I call them "Lindy Vets"). Â I enjoy helping the newbies as well as challenge myself with the advanced Lindy Vets.
I would highly recommend checking out Third Saturday Swing for Swing aficionados across all skill level! Â :-)
Third Saturday Swing's venue has changed quite a bit and it is always hard to find a good home with all the right stuff to offer its dancers. I have been going to TSS for a couple of years now and I love the new place! The high ceilings make the room feel spacious, big, and (somewhat) airy. The rotating speakers allow the music to play in all parts of the floor which spreads the dancers out  instead of cramming into one section of the floor. There's an extra room where people can just chat, sit, rest, put there stuff down, etc. It's super fun and there's always a beginner's lesson right before the dance starts. No partner needed.
The only minor down side is the parking. There's two ample parking lots across the street, but it is in a somewhat seemingly shady place. I like to park in the lot diagonally from the venue next to the bank. I think it's a Ralph's or Von's grocery store and it's super well lit and at the bank are security cameras. I liked TSS's first venue which had the parking lot right next to it for easy access (that's what she said).
It's a great venue, great dance, and most important, the people are FUNTASTIC!
P.S. - what time is it?!?!?!?!?!? Â (^_^)/
I always have such a fantastic time dancing here! The venue is very large and spacious with a really nice wooden floor that has give (yay for the knees), the music is always great, and the people are always so nice. There are occasionally live bands or contests which make the night even more fun and enjoyable. I am very grateful for the company and the atmosphere every time I get a chance to dance here.
