No judgement here on the late night festivities...haven't been there for that. Â But they do make a terrific and unique very thin crust pizza that is always terrific! Â Not a ton of toppings, but always very good and the basic salad they serve is also unique and fresh and tasty.
So, go for the food...a good place to start a night in Old Roseville!
So...I've been here a few times now and feel like I've given this place enough tries to be able to write an accurate review. Â Most of the time I've come here, the place is pretty dead...some people may be see this is a negative thing, I, however, kind of like it. Â The pizza is absolutely delish!! Thin crust pizza is my favorite and the pizza at Basic does not disappoint. Â The service isn't that great, if you want food or a drink, you usually have to go up to the bar and order it. Â There's been some inconsistencies with drinks, sometimes I'm served a large margarita and sometimes it comes in a smaller glass- but I'm always charged the same price. Â The crowd is usually pretty diverse here, just depending on which night you go. Â I will probably go back...just because I like the pizza so much.
Review Source:It was the night before New Years Eve as well as my friends birhday. We started at Basic. Walking to the door you would think it was located in a ghost town. The only people around, were the staff. The bouncers checked our ID's and told us that they were not going to be charging a cover all night. I would soon find out why.
Walking in, the place was seriously empty. As in, its 10:00pm and we were the only group that was there. I dont think that has ever happened to me before. Where was everyone?
I never saw a menu, so Im assuming that they close down the kitchen after a certain time to make way for the crowds of dancers. Or not.
My friends ordered shots, which were the normal price, took a couple pictures and left.
Im guessing the reason for the ghost-town-esq club, had something to do with the recent opening of another nightclub with a bit more of a vibe right around the corner. Or maybe it was the fact it was a Thursday night before NYE? Whatever it was, it was nice to not have to pay a cover. However that was the only benefit to being here.
I am writing this review based on their happy hour only. I called ahead of time and they assured me that they did have a happy hour and gave me some details. We drove over and the place was DEAD - literally two people were in there. The worst part was like they weren't even trying - there was a ladder in the entry way - looked like they were doing some repair or wiring rework of some sort. Â Not at all conducive to welcoming people in.
I think a majority of people come here for the night club thing, which I have not done. Perhaps someday...
Basic reminds me of that "hole in the wall" bar that is just a fun place to socialize and have fun at. I went on a Friday night with some girlfriends and we just had a great time. They had a dj playing a mix of 80's & current music,a small dance floor that towards 11pm EVERYONE seem to be dancing on, 2 bars that had very friendly bartenders, flat screens hanging from exposed brick walls, & the crowd was pretty much a mix of 21-35 year olds. The drinks were good & not over priced like many downtown bars seem to be now. Over all we had a great time at Basic and will be back.
Review Source:Came here on a Friday night with a friend, never heard of it before and for a split second I wondered if I had experienced narcolepsy for the first time in my life. Â I was wrong, I really was in Roseville, and really paying a $2 cover and asked if I was on the guest list...guest list?! This is Roseville right? Â They actually had VIP, I'm guessing if you're getting VIP at a bar in Roseville, you have never really ventured outside Placer County lines. Â
The crowd was young and not dressed to impressed. Â The girls were tacky - girls who should be wearing a large were squeezing themselves into shmedium dresses. Â
The music was alright, the bartenders were ok, but in general Basic and the people that frequent it need a reality check.
I like the funky old building and the pizza is very good. You select and build your own and get a more traditional thin crust. The Salads have been good at time and other time to much dressing. Service can be a touch slow as employees do double duty at the bar and tables sometimes. Certainly a great place to get a pizza.
Review Source:Chris and I go here often for the pizza (however, we would go more often if we didn't somehow always feel like having pizza on Mondays, or if they happened to be open on Mondays!)...but that is beside the point. Â The pizza there is sooo delish! It is really thin, crispy crust, and the red sauce is so yummy! We like to get pepperoni, mushroom, olive, sundried tomatoes and fresh basil-it is perfect! We usually go in before the "club" part starts, just to eat and have a couple beers. The bartenders are really nice and willing to chat it up a bit :)
We recently had our rehearsal dinner there, and it went great. Â The (manager?) Mollee coordinated it with us, and it was super low key! Â Lots of pizza, salad, and open bar, and we still ended up right on budget. Â Couldn't have asked for a better experience (well, except that we couldn't get music playing on that side of the bar). Â Other than that though, super fun night!
I'm not a fan because:
-I don't like rude bartenders
-I'm not a big fan of being shoved against the bar when I'm trying to order a drink
-If I pay for a drink, I'd like a drink-- not water that looks somewhat like a drink
-I don't dig the 'I may or may not be into MMA' look of the crowd
I was here Friday past with some friends from out of town, in a good mood and ready to dance. We hit the Rose Room for some jaegerbombs, then ended up on the edge of Old Roseville for BUK, known as "Basic" for short.
6 providers of a total of 15 bummed cigarettes later, we were let in, free of cover charge due to a friend in tow knowing the bouncer (a chap David who is a teacher in his day job, how sad is this country when your teachers have to moonlight?).
Inside you have your typical townie-scene---men in Fubu or less casual, and girls in barely-there dresses and prostitute-wear on the dance floor, the differences further demarcated by the sedentary, standing, leering, arms crossed men who probably think it's gay to dance, and then girls who've lined up a very reliable babysitter for their kids, and as a result, have gotten very drunk, very early and are acting very juvenile (see my review of Modesto's Speakeasy Bar for my details on the townie-club experience).
My buddy Mikey summed it up perfectly: "The problem with a place like this for people like us (educated, non-Affliction shirt associated) is that it's way too obvious that townies going all out on a Friday night are in massive denial of how their life is going nowhere. Their desire to get completely loaded then get in a fight so as to have something to snort about later is actually disheartening". Indeed, Basic's cup is overfloweth with Roseville's future-less youth, and if you're a reveler like myself and my friends, who act insane and ridiculous while on the dancefloor and who are comfortable with our heterosexualness at the same time, you will thoroughly confuse the leering males who just don't get why their A game isn't attracting any hoes.
Haven't tried the pizza, but if you just want to get lost in drunken abandon with people who still relive their high school glories, Basic will give you a nice-sized dance floor to carry out this mission.
went here for the first time on Friday night. This place, while at 8:30 was an absolute dead zone (uhhh Friday night, downtown Roseville...really??), the ambiance is pretty legit! kind of a warehouse feel with the concrete floors and old school brick interior. Plus a gaggle of washed up Cougars showed up at the bar, which made for good entertainment for my date and I. We ordered a basic (pun) pepperoni and black olive pizza, and let me tell you, this pizza was out of this world! Thin-style crust, and the seasoning was absolute perfection! Just the right amount of cheese and toppings, plus the "small" could have easily fed two more people. My vodka/soda wasn't too watered down either, which is always a plus. Aside from the tumbleweeds rolling through the joint, I'd say this is a great place for the bar hoppers of Old Town Roseville. Plus the Boxing Donkey and Onyx are in walking distance of Basic, so no need to worry about driving around all night.
While I will forever be a midtown night owl at heart, this place definitely gets my vote for some tasty waves.
Went into Basic with a couple girlfriends. Â Sat down at a table right next to the bar......we chatted for at least 30 minutes and not one server or bartendar approached our table. Â I went to one of the employees and he said that we need to order our own pizza and drinks at the bar...(we saw waiters waiting on other guests?) Â the bar was crowded..and they want us to try and squeeze in and order our dinner? Â I have been there before and had no trouble getting waited on at a table.....the other employee even addressed the situation to a manager and she walked right by our table without even acknowledging us? Â I have NEVER been treated so poorly at a restaurant as a customer. Â They could have a good thing going ....(their pizza is very good, but as you see from other reviews they obviously do not care and do not want the business.)
We walked out and enjoyed a very nice dinner at the irish pub right around the corner.
Very disappointed last night at basic...I always enjoy their pizza and friendly staff but last night was a complete upset. First... how can a bar NOT have a single bottle of red wine available ? (I would have been ok bringing my own if they had told me they didn't have any RED) Not to mention they were out of RUM too! It's a bar. Go to Safeway and pick some up to get you through the next order...
Second...for them to go to their sister bar and bring over a bottle for another couple and not allow others to purchase a glass who had already requested one is even worse.
We have hosted several group events there the past few months. A real disappointment this week.
Came in with a coupon good for $30 worth of food and drinks on a Sunday night. Kinda creeped out by the surroundings, (deserted old town Roseville area) and wasn't sure if we were at the right place. There are no hostess at this joint, you walk right in and seat yourself and the bartender doubled as the waiter.
Food: we weren't sure what to order, they have 3 different specialty pizzas and of course you can build your own pizza. We opted for their specialties, small mashed potatoe pizza and the large BLT pizza. I originally had the intend to use the coupon for drinks and food but since my bf and i both had to drive, we opted for just food. and WOW, it was enough pizza for both of us for the week! They give you paper plates for your food and the pizza is served right on the pan- definitely not a fancy place to take a date to. However, the pizza was absolutely delicious- the BLT pizza was full of toppings and the crust was thin and chewy, even crunchy around the edges.
Service: Awesome, the bartender was nice enough to tell us about their specials and never failed to check up on us and refill our waters.
Overall: Great hang out place to watch a game or to catch up with friends over some beers. Pizzas were cheap and tasty. Highly recommended!
I've been to Basic on two occassions. Â One was for dancing. Â On this experience we encountered a fairly busy experience at Basic. Â Food was still being served on one side of the restaurant for a birthday party. Â The crowd was of mixed ages, mostly 25-35, and everyone seemed to be fairly well dressed, semi-casual people who most likely are working professionals. Â The bartenders weren't extremely attentive, however, the bar was completely packed so I assume that was due to the amount of business.
The second time I went for a date on a Wednesday night and there weren't a lot of people in there. Â The staff was friendly and very attentive and gave good pizza recommendations. Â Their pizza is fresh and delicious and seems to not be overpowered with unhealthy ingredients (it was relatively thin crust, but a HUGE pizza for the price). Â Great pizza, great atmosphere, and the decor is superb.
Great place to go dancing in old town Roseville on Friday and Saturday nights. Can be hit or miss, sometimes really crowded, other times fairly dead. Mostly a younger crowd, 21-25. Drinks are moderately priced. Pizza is good. Simple, cold and plain decor.
Overall: Fun place to drink and dance on the weekends in Roseville.
Loved the Mashed Potato & Bacon Pizza. Went on a Sunday about 6:30pm, ordered a small pizza which is huge, and a salad that 2 of us couldn't finish...very tasty & refreshing. The bartender was nice & recommended the pizza which we agreed, was delicious! We learned upon leaving they don't charge a corkage fee.... Â Nice!
Review Source:Basic Pizza was having their two year anniversary yesterday and the pizza's were only $2. What a great time to check this place out, right? Took the whole family and it was complete chaos. They were not prepared for the onslaught of people. Â There was no line or sign ups for tables - it was just rush in a grab whatever you could. There were no employees greeting customers, just mobs of people walking around looking for tables. While we stood there waiting for something, three other parties just walked right past us and went looking for a table on their own.
I still gave the place a positive review, because I am sure the food is good, just wish I would have experienced it first hand. Â Will have to come back when it's not their anniversary.
Took my family here for pizza after learning about there $5 happy hour pizza and beer special. Â
We ordered the basic salad and it was far from basic. Â Actually very good. Â The pizza was made to order, and it is thin crust, that too was very good. Â
I can't complain about this place like other have been able to. Â Probably because we just went for the food!
They had live entertainment and the staff was good and prompt.
We will be back!
Driving around Roseville, waiting for it to be dinner time, looking for a place to grab a drink.
I peered into Basic as we drove by & it looked about right. Original brick, minimalist furniture.
We ventured in and had a couple of beverages at the bar, it was happy hour - $3 pints & $5 wine by the glass. Bartender was surly.
Turns out Basic is on the artisan pizza trend, the pies looked good, we may have to venture back. You know, next time we're in Roseville (which seems to happen more often than one might think).
Cougar central.
I came here with a pal and we were later joined by another friend. Â Both the gals remarked on the phenomenon of older ladies hunting for young men. Â My conception of Roseville is a town full of recently divorced women who kept the house. Â Perhaps their former husbands now live in midtown Sacramento and go to The Mix every night while these divorced ladies go to Basic.
The hotness of cougars aside, Basic seems to be an interesting and cool place. Â Since buildings in California are no longer allowed to be built with brick I always appreciate what constitutes older buildings in California because of their use of bricks. Â This is such a place. Â The building housing Basic seems like it was a warehouse for the railroads which run across the street. Â This gives the place a decidedly urban feel to it, something you would come across in a real city. Â There are exposed brick walls, some brick walls covered with plaster, and/or paint so that you can see the different layers of use. Â Pretty cool. Â Although from another perspective the walls would look like a messy, unfinished warehouse. Â To each their own, I suppose.
As for the music, they have juke box and they do a lot of live bands. Â When I was at this place they had a blues band play starting around 7pm and continuing past 9pm. Â It was pretty neat.
The food here is a pretty decent fare. Â The cheese wasn't the best. Â It was a greasy New York style of cheese for pizza. Â For many that is the best. Â I prefer the California/Italian cheese clean of grease. Â No matter. Â The crust was fantastic with its thin crusty-ness. Â And a small pizza was around $8 or $9 and seemed larger than most large pizzas, although the thin crust probably accounted for the large area taken up by the pizza.
Why was I here? Â A friend and some other folks are planning on doing an art show here and some live painting. Â They had a meeting here to plan it out. Â I'll probably go that when it happens. Â Too bad though that I missed the Yelp event for welcoming Olivia as the new community manager. Â My friend and I didn't leave until around 9pm. Â Another time, perhaps.
I went to Basic this past Saturday night for my boyfriends 30th birthday. There was a group of 7 of us and we got there around 11. There was a good crowd, it was easy to get drinks (that were not crazy expensive) and the music was awesome! They have an area for dancing which was not overly crowded like most places. They have flat screen TVs all over playing music videos and sports. If your looking for a good place to go out locally Basic is your place.
I haven't tried the food yet but I'm looking forward to the next time we go back.
Bacon and Mashed Potato Pizza? Â Are you kidding me? Â Seriously, that just sounds weird. Â It was delicious!
Found out about this place from a couple I was talking to at Mary's Pizza Shack. Â They were hoping the pizza there was as good as Basic's.
The atmosphere is cool and modern. Â We asked if they had a high chair and they did. Â So we sat in the back (plenty of room for our son to run around) and the waiter suggested the most popular pizza. Â Bacon and Mashed Potato with white sauce. Â The white sauce is pretty much just olive oil. Â It came out on this huge cookie sheet. Â We ordered half meatball and sausage which was also scrumptious. Â The pear salad was huge! Â Could have served seven. Â I ordered their own beer IPA, very nice. Â This could be our new favorite place. Â They also have happy hour deals. Â Give them a call!
Pizza and salad was very delicious! You get to choose your own toppings and the pizza crust is not too filling so you can enjoy the toppings a lot more :) in addition the staff is very hospitable and they make sure u enjoyed your visit by keeping your beverage glass full :)
I went with my entire family which included two young children so this is very family friendly. =) will visit again! and I would totally recommend this to people inquiring about some good eats =)
Damn you Roseville.
Going to high school in the area, we pretty much had to drive a good 45 minutes to the hood to get a drink let alone take a date to go see The Bodyguard. Â
Anyways, my exploits as that of a wingman this weekend were second to none. Â Just a snippet of what I had to deal with...
Girl: So how long you in town for?
Archie: Just a night. Â Going home tomorrow.
Girl: I live in the area.
Archie: Great (checks on friend, damn, not progressing).
Girl: My friend seems to like your friend.
Archie: Yup, sure does.
Girl: I am going to go talk to her.
Archie: Wait, so, tell me more about your place.
Girl: Well, it's nice, and the kind of place that I want to take you back to and do dirty things to you.
Archie: You're right, go talk to your friend.
Wingman etiquette calls for a maximum of 30 minutes of distraction time. Â Unfortunately for my friend, I could only stand 12 minutes.
Basic is pretty cool and way better after midnight. Â
Just avoid the aggressive cougars. Â And cover your ass, because you WILL get goosed by one of them.
Parachute.
Have any of the other reviewers actually eaten here?
I guess the atmosphere was quaint and deliberately bohemian (which just seems wrong in and of itself). The food on the other hand...
I just don't care enough to detail everything that was bad about this place, suffice to say if you hate pizza and wish to see it tortured and mutilated while sipping on nothing-special drinks in a somewhat interesting environment, this is the place for you!
Talk about a place that could benefit from some advertising. Â The myspace bulletins just aren't cutting it guys...
The pizza is fantastic, especially when it's free during happy hour. Â Good beers, good atmosphere, and great building. Â The only downside is the hit-or-miss crowd...just running some local ads could fix this problem and could make this place THE happening spot in Roseville...
so, i reallllllllllllllllllllllllllllllly wanted to love basic.
i love the atmosphere... read chris b's review to hear a little more about it...
i know, they're pretty new, but here's a couple reasons it got a three:
my margarita was terrible, barely drinkable.
i asked for LIGHT on the cheese, WITH mushrooms...but i got back EXTRA cheese, NO mushrooms. when i tried to peel off the cheese, the crust was so thin, there wasn't anything left. bummer.
our waitress was OK... while she was nice and somewhat helpful, our glasses remained empty for quite a while-- and it wasn't very busy.
i'll probably be back, since it's around the corner from my house... but my expectations will definitely be lower. sad... :(
Brand new funky warehouse space converted into a high-end bar and pizza place. Â The exposed ductwork, industrial theme, and rustic brick walls make this place look urban yet refined. Â Pizza is the only item on the menu but they look (and smell) delicious.
I was directed here by a Roseville resident who treated me to a couple of glasses of Zinfandel and great conversation. Â We shared a table with her neighbors near the front of the bar that had a fantastic view of passing trains. Â Hot pizza and cool breezes (the front garage doors are left wide open) made for a great summer night.
