Mediocre Beer, Apathetic Service

Maybe I'm spoiled by the breweries in Montana in general and in Missoula specifically but was pretty disappointed in our experience at Bayern Brewing.  

There were several of us and we stopped in on a week-day mid-afternoon to do some tasting and possibly have a beer or two.  There were only a couple of other customers so not busy at all.

We waited patiently at the bar while the server (I just hope he wasn't one of the owners) finished filling a customer's growler.  Once finished he turned to talk to another employee who had just walked behind the bar.  When he finally acknowledged us I was kind of expecting a "welcome to Bayern" or "have you been here before?" but instead we got a "are you guys going to have a beer?".

We said we wanted to taste a couple of the beers and were left to try sort out types and styles for ourselves from the signs while he went off to find some tasting glasses during which he resumed his conversation with the other employee behind the bar.  When he returned with a couple of taster glasses we each gave our choice, a taste was poured and set on the bar.  No explanation of the type/style, just kind of a here-you-go and then returned to his conversation with the other employee.  

Not impressed with any of the first beers we tasted we waited for him to take a break in his conversation with the other employee and check to see what we thought and if we'd like to try a different beer.  After a few minutes he did return to us but there was no "what did you think?" or "you might like to try xyz".  One of our group did ask a question about one of the beer styles he was thinking of tasting and got the reply "no, actually, it's totally the opposite of that" making the person look a bit foolish for not knowing this and asking such a dumb question.

We each selected another beer to taste and again nothing impressed us.  We tipped the employee, said thanks and quickly made our exit.

With so many other great beer choices in town, with welcoming, engaged staff I'd say put this one on the bottom of your to-visit list or skip it completely.

Descent atmosphere but wonderful customer service! Beer can sometimes be good and sometimes be off. Place is small and clean with a large window that shows off the production line.  Worthy of being checked out at least once !
