Mediocre Beer, Apathetic Service
Maybe I'm spoiled by the breweries in Montana in general and in Missoula specifically but was pretty disappointed in our experience at Bayern Brewing. Â
There were several of us and we stopped in on a week-day mid-afternoon to do some tasting and possibly have a beer or two. Â There were only a couple of other customers so not busy at all.
We waited patiently at the bar while the server (I just hope he wasn't one of the owners) finished filling a customer's growler. Â Once finished he turned to talk to another employee who had just walked behind the bar. Â When he finally acknowledged us I was kind of expecting a "welcome to Bayern" or "have you been here before?" but instead we got a "are you guys going to have a beer?".
We said we wanted to taste a couple of the beers and were left to try sort out types and styles for ourselves from the signs while he went off to find some tasting glasses during which he resumed his conversation with the other employee behind the bar. Â When he returned with a couple of taster glasses we each gave our choice, a taste was poured and set on the bar. Â No explanation of the type/style, just kind of a here-you-go and then returned to his conversation with the other employee. Â
Not impressed with any of the first beers we tasted we waited for him to take a break in his conversation with the other employee and check to see what we thought and if we'd like to try a different beer. Â After a few minutes he did return to us but there was no "what did you think?" or "you might like to try xyz". Â One of our group did ask a question about one of the beer styles he was thinking of tasting and got the reply "no, actually, it's totally the opposite of that" making the person look a bit foolish for not knowing this and asking such a dumb question.
We each selected another beer to taste and again nothing impressed us. Â We tipped the employee, said thanks and quickly made our exit.
With so many other great beer choices in town, with welcoming, engaged staff I'd say put this one on the bottom of your to-visit list or skip it completely.
In short? Great staff, great setting. Disappointing beer.
In long? This is clearly a brewery on the go, and they have a few offerings that have solid local followings. Their beers are available throughout the NW, and maybe even farther afield for all I know. They're making money, and they have a shiny new taproom to show for it. It's really nice, with big windows looking in on the bottling line, a cool upstairs that has a clubhouse feel (and faux old-world-castle decorations).
Outside on the patio, there's a giant chessboard inlaid into the cement, about 6' by 6'. 3' high plastic chess pieces await the warriors of the table, of whom Missoula can evidently boast a fair few, including a local legend said to once have given Bobby Fischer all he could handle and then some in a friendly game.
We didn't check out the food, but we did try a couple beers. Like a lot of Bayern's offerings, they seemed a little flawed, though the recipes show a lot of character and imagination. If I could get my hands on a batch that didn't taste like artichokes, I'd be a lot more excited about their lineup.
I can't believe there is only one other review. Â What?
Let's begin: Owner and Brewmaster, Jürgen Knöller, is a German Diploma Master Brewer.  That means he has a degree.  From the culture that sorta kinda invented the Western concept of BEER.
Their doppelback is so good you'll stand up and cheer. Â And then you'll order another pint. Â And their brew room is always warm, and comfy, and complete with two cute cats.
I've had a ho-hum beer or two here, but who cares?
