We stopped in around 3 o'clock on a quiet Sunday, exploring. Just a small late lunch to try it out. Â Salad and a sandwich, shared. Â What a pleasant surprise! Â Subtle, fresh. Â Tastes even better as you go along. Turns out they've been here for years. Â We will be back for certain. Â Thank you, Â Alex, for your skill and courtesy. Â Easy to get to, A train Dyckman St. stop. Â Just down the hill from spectacular Cloisters museum.
Review Source:If I could afford here I'd come for dinner and wine every night. That said, a great place for a fancy-ish meal in a cozy intimate space. The catfish tacos were out of control - that could be a whole meal in itself.
I haven't been here for coffee yet, but it feels like a good place to get iced coffee and have a Real Conversation With Another Human Being, not a place to hunker down staring at facebook for hours.
The guy who runs the place is really nice.
I had the fried yucca and the eggplant tapenade appetizers and the shrimp salad, plus one of the red wines (can't remember; sorry!). Everything was delicious. The place seems kind of like a two-person operation, so make sure you're not in a rush. It's a bit cramped in there, but the ambience is worth it. Definitely a great find.
Review Source:O Hot Dayuuuum!
Haven't been here in a long while! Came back for their delectable wine selection as mentioned in my previous review. I tasted both their Casanova (red) and Bella Dona (white) to refresh my memory. Bella Dona was the choice of the night.
After choosing out wine , we started our meal off with the Roasted Eggplant Tapenade, then gourmet steak chimi (double yum!), and finished off with their NY cheesecake.
Overall, the prices and the flavors you just cannot beat! However, the only thing that may be frustrating is if you come for dinner and there is only one (friendly!) waiter. Other than that, there are no complaints here!
Nice little gem hidden in Inwood. Â Very small place, but cozy and quaint. Â Seems like a place to go for some quiet time, maybe to get some reading done and enjoy a nice glass of wine or coffee. Â Not the best place to go on a Friday night though. Â Sooo if you're looking for some loud music and a younger crowd then you can take your talents down to Dyckman Bar, right down the block.
This place strikes me as a place for an older, more mature crowd. Â I had a glass of Moscato which was AMAZING. Â A little pricey for wine, but that seems to be their thing, and it's worth it. Â Enjoy!
Not much to add beyond what other people are saying...I found the food to be pretty decent, but not quite as mind-blowing as other people seem to be suggesting. Â I had the catfish tacos and the morrocan chicken sandwich, which were definitely tasty, but were a little heavier than I really like (a little heavy on the cream/mayo/something?) Â Wine was very good. Â
One thing to note, the portion sizes are quite generous..my fatty self thought I needed both of those dishes, and I really didn't, and ended up taking half of it for lunch the next day. Â Entree prices are a little high for this part of Manhattan but not outrageous; if you're trying to save some money, the sandwiches/paninis are a good deal. Â
Service was very polite and nice! Â The one guy who was handling the whole restaurant was very pleasant and personable; however, since he was the only guy there, we did have to wait a bit for the check, but it was nothing terrible. Â
I think I'll definitely come back to try some of the other dishes if I'm in the area.
This might be a go to restaurant for as long as it stays consistent. Went with my girlfriend, brother and his girlfriend and I have nothing negative to say other than its a bit tiny, but I love places like these.
Nice wine selection by the glass, good coffee, and a great waitress. The food was all around great. We tried the catfish tacos, the mozzarella platter, the Salmon, The Shrimp Scampi, the Shrimp pesto and the 16 oz Sirloin. Everything was seasoned well, including the veggies. We finished with the pecan pie. It was all amazing.
If you're not careful, you'll walk right by this unobtrusive gem in Inwood. Â It's small spot with attentive, friendly service in a laid-back ambiance. Â There is a choice selection of wines by the glass or bottle and an equally choice selection of eating options (from sandwiches and salads and tapas to entrees). Â It's moderately priced. I've enjoyed the broiled salmon, the tuna salad, and the sides of yucca fries. Â On a Saturday night, the place was moderately busy but not packed and the waiter encouraged our party of three to continue talking after our check had been paid. Â And it's not loud: you can have a conversation without shouting over other people or music.
Review Source:Seriously ~ it's really amazing!
I'm almost tempted to not tell anyone so I can keep this place myself but why deprive the rest of NYC?!?
It's very cozy (sitting max 18 people) but the atmosphere is HUGE!
The chef/Owner is super nice and the food is really, really, I mean really good!
I had the Gourmet Chimi (yum!), Yuca fries (yum!), Crab cakes (yum!) and the Flan(again, yum!). Yes, it was a lot of food for one day but my sister and I did split it!
Portions are just right and everything is super fresh and deli-sh.
You should just go there~ now.
On our way from the Dyckman Farmhouse to the Cloisters, we found this gem! Â Had exactly what we wanted--excellent cappucinos for me, wine selection for my mom and hearty, delicious salads. Â Our waiter (who may have been the owner) was so sweet and smiley that it made our experience even better. Â What a fantastic spot to stop and take a break from hoofing it everywhere!
Review Source:This is the only sort of upscale cafe/coffee bar near where I work. It was my go to place for iced coffee but only because I can be too lazy to walk farther afield to D&D. The coffee here needs alot of work, sometimes it tastes 3 days old, other times one can stumble upon a fresh batch. Â The sandwiches that I have tried are quite tasty, but the service can be a little rude and quite slow. Â The AC is always on bare minimum if at all, so I don't advise coming to this cramped space on a hot day.
Review Source:In the midst of a Manhattan winter, we were looking for a unassuming place to dine on a windy Friday night and ended up in this quaint little place in the northern part of Manhattan; my roommate had just returned from an audit in China and felt like having a quiet evening away from places like Laris, Shanghai -- perhaps China's top restaurant. We didn't expect much but were amazed at the quality of the food and also at its taste. The wines were reasonable and there are some rather good and well priced ones. The atmosphere is pleasant .
We found the egg plant Tapenade rather tasty; the shrimp Tostada was excellent and rather imaginative in its taste spectrum thanks to a play between avocados, fresh corn, and a hint of tartness. Also the shrimps were excellently prepared. We had a deeply colored Montepulciano d'Abruzzo with strong pepper notes that went rather well with what we ordered and It was served with understated etiquette fitting Paris' Eurl Bistrot Au Bougnat. We finished having a "The Chimi", a rather delicious chicken burger easy to recommend. The yuca fries that came with it were excellent and not oily.
I would suggest this place to anyone looking for good food. But don't expect a lavish setting; for starter, the place is so tiny that it barely fits 10 people. Their menu is partially available here at http://beansandvines.com
When you finish dining you might want to venture to the nearby PJ Wines Inc, perhaps one of the better wine stores in Manhattan and only a few paces from Beans and Vines.
By the way, I suggest that the owner of this restaurant gets a better exhaust system, as the many aromas coming from the kitchen can be a bit much. In passing let me add that before we were done, the owner and chef of the restaurant came out to meet us and we were very impressed with his demeanor, especially after having tasted his amazing concoctions.
This is my number one "chill" spot! The service is exceptional and the food is a feast for the senses. My favorite dishes are the deliciously lumpy crab cakes, the shrimp tostada salad, and the signature yuca fries. Pair any of these with a glass of their exclusive wine selection and have yourself a memorable night !!
Review Source:The place is small, but nice. Their goat cheese salad was great.
Their cappuccino was a bit too bitter though. Their cheese plate was not bad for the price. Although, all of it tasted like cheese that may have been bought at the grocery store down the street. Also, maybe they should give better bread and/or crackers instead of wheat toast.
I do recommend it as a good place to meet up with a friend in the area.
I'm really pleased to have a place like Beans and Vines in my neck of the woods. Â It seems unusually elegant but, believe me, I'll take it. Â It's one part wine bar, one part coffee house, one part tapas/restaurant and completely terrific! Â After a couple of stop-ins for coffee and a dinner here, I can confidently report this place is worth a strong 4 star rating. Â
As for dinner, consider the tapas to be generous serving sizes, small plates for those who enjoy a good, full feeling. Â Starting with the Eggplant Tapenade, we knew something was special about this place. Â There was subtlety in the flavor and it relied more on the natural flavors in the ingredients than on any seasoning. Â Thus there were notes of sweet and salty and savory all in that small ramekin. Â This is a lot to say about a tiny bowl of tapenade but, it really set the scene for some delicious food. Â The Chicken Satay arrived and we were surprised by the depth in the dipping sauce and were lapping it up with those scrumptious yuka fries (worth the calories). The Tostada was next and we were pleased at the presentation as well as the flavor. Â They're really making an effort here. Â Finally, they hit the ball out of the park with those Catfish Tacos. Â Wow! Â Just go and have them. Â
The wine selection was ample for such a small establishment. Â Their coffee is also very good. Â
I only have one note to offer. Â Beans and Vines has no doubt earned its following. Â Many folks came by to see how long it would take to get a table. Â Some, who seemed to know the chef, came back to hover over our table (which was nearest the kitchen) and shout into the kitchen. Â I don't go out to have someone hover over my table and shout. Â It's the only thing that detracted from an otherwise wonderful night.
I was NEVER expecting such a place all the way up in Inwood, but hey - here it is! Pleasant surprise on a totally random excursion uptown. Huge portions of Moroccan chicken salad (sooo original and yummy!) and cheese plate. Decent coffee and wine. Random combo but they manage to pull it off, one way or the other. Good service, too - very hoody place with no pretense and a great vibe, which is what I would go for up here.
Review Source:I am a BIG FAN of this place!! Â
My favorite dish is the Chicken Chimi with yucca fries...it is TO DIE FOR!!!!!!!!!!
The service is excellent, Alex the owner is warm and will make you feel like you're at home. Â So for me...great food + excellent service = I'm there pretty much every week!!
Enjoy....
There are some things Beans and Vines gets right, and other things that I sincerely hope they improve upon so I can bump this review up a star; it definitely could be a great addition to the neighborhood.
I've been here during brunch/lunch hours, so I haven't yet gotten to try the wines, but the regular coffee tended to underwhelm for a location with "Beans" as the first word in the name. The latté, however, was pretty good, and way more convenient than hiking all the way to Indian Road for those in the Dyckman area.
The last time we were there they had added pastries and cookies from http://thischickbakes.com, which looked delicious. We got an Earl Grey and Cream and a Chocolate Chunk cookie, but unfortunately they had been allowed to go stale and were hard. Perfect when dunked into a latté, though. I'm sure they're great when fresh.
As other reviewers have mentioned, the yucca fries are indeed amazing, but the chimi could be much better, especially if it weren't served on cheap-ass Pepperidge Farm Deli Flats® bread. I'm a huge fish taco fan and loved what they did with the catfish tacos.
Service was hit and miss. Very nice and friendly, but it took 30-40 minutes of waiting for a simple takeout order of a couple sandwiches.
I'm looking forward to having a cozy dinner for two here, and can't wait to try the dinner menu with wine.
Great addition to the neighborhood. Â
This is a great spot with good food, a quiet ambience and friendly staff in attractive surroundings. Â The room is really small but it isn't overwhelming even when it is full because things somehow remain calm.
The food is varied and always seems to be the best quality, and fresh - and delightfully well-prepared. Â Wines are very reasonably-priced.
And if you subscribe to the theory that the cleanliness of the bathroom is an indicator of the cleanliness of the kitchen, you're going to be happy here.
I'm not sure how Beans and Vines made it's way to Inwood...but thankfully it did...and thankfully it's right around the corner from my apartment. A wine bar, you say? In Inwood...above 96th Street? Yes...it's true. There's not much that excites me about the wine list but this place has some incredible eats...especially for the hood.
If you are going for a sandwich, you have to try the Balsamic Chicken and Avocado sandwich. It has great flavor and is very light...perfect for lunch. All sandwiches come with a small side salad that is lightly dressed. $9 may be a stretch for this small entree, but it is good...so there's not too much to complain about.
Tapas: plural of tapas
Noun: Small Spanish savory dishes, typically served with drinks at a bar.
There's not much "Spanish" or "small" about tapas at B&V. But this is NOT a bad thing. Their portions are quite large and could easily fill one person as an entree. I recommend going with a few people and splitting several tapas amongst the group.
To check out:
Grilled Chicken Sate with Coconut Sate Sauce:
Perfectly tender grilled chicken in a coconut/peanut sauce that I found myself eating with a spoon well after the chicken was done.
Grilled Shrimp Tostada:
Holy. Huge. Shrimp.
This yummy dish comes with Avocado, Corn and a Chipotle Cream Sauce. It really is divine.
Catfish Tacos:
Tender catfish, deep fried and served with a TON of coleslaw and mixed greens with the same Chipotle Cream Sauce from the Tostada. These were amazing...full of flavor and not too heavily breaded...perfectly fried catfish.
A bottle of wine may only set you back an average of $30...and while the list isn't incredible, it does offer enough to accompany the food. They do have far more reds on the list than their whites. Try getting their Chenin Blanc. I loved it.
Check it out...this place is quite a thing to have up here in Inwood.
Got the Chicken Avocado sandwich as takeout. Â A bit disappointed.
Pros: Â Chicken (what little there was) was moist, bread was good, and side salad greens were fresh and not rotting.
Cons: Â There was no sundried tomato on the sandwich, and romaine lettuce had been substituted for the arugula. Â Result? Â BLAND.
Haven't tried the coffee or the wine, but I'm real suspect about the food...
Had neither beans nor vines here. But the sandwiches and yucca fries deserve four stars.
Had the upscale chimi and we didn't know what to expect. When it came out we still didn't know what to expect. Sure didn't look like what comes out of the chimi trucks. Looked a lot like a burger. But damn is it a good burger. Wish it was on different bread, but it was still really really good. If there was such a thing as a gourmet Dominican burger, this would be it.
We also had the tuna salad sandwich. Had apples in it which really cut the richness of the dressing. Probably the best tuna salad sandwich I've ever had. Good choice of bread on this sandwich too. Lightly toasted but not pressed.
But no matter what you have to try the yucca fries. Worth the trip alone. Good addition to the neighborhood. Wish it was a little bit bigger though.
Friendship is waking up at your pal's place with a hangover and a uterus that is starting a rebellion, and having them say "I'm buying breakfast".
If four advils can't help your head pain and lady pain, this breakfast will. Spicy, incredible huevos rancheros, covered in cheese and tangy hot tomato-y sauce. ADORABLY phallic yuca fries. EXCELLENT iced coffee. I was in heaven. For an hour, I forgot my woes and instead appreciated my breakfast and the good (albeit hungover) company.
The service was BOMB, our server KNEW how I wanted my eggs. He even said, after I was finished "You like it a little more spicy. I know". I'm like, what are you, in my brain? Get outta there!!
On a Sunday night, we brought our friends here for dinner. The 4 of us enjoyed the food, atmosphere and menu options. We used our Groupon coupon without any hassle.
We all ordered dishes that had shrimp as the main ingredient. The shrimps were the big giant ones, not those small-looking puny ones. They were grilled perfectly. The plates here are HUGE.. I mean the actual square plates the food is served on are huge. They almost fall off the edge of the table if you sit across from someone. It may inhibit patrons from ordering more food which would be a shame.
Our waitress was sweet but unable to handle the job.
This place is a cozy diamond in the 'hood. I will definitely return here for more food, wines and beans.
Love it here.... Alex (owner/chef) is a glowing personality. Â The first time I went in was for a breakfast meeting, the coffee was amazing... latte-delicious.
The next time I was in was with H to see what dinner was like -
So good! Â The food is full and flavorful, varied but not overwhelming. Â There is a tapas flair... but the amount of food (and the size of the plates) are not tapas sized....
Its always cozy, and it's small...little tables - (part of the reason the huge plates look a little funny) -But even when it is crowded at Beans and Vines, it's not loud.... people come here to have a nice meal in good company, with a lovely host.... We have ended up in some pretty interesting conversations with people around us. Â One night there was a gentleman showing Alex magic tricks (I learned one and used it at a party the next night) - Â they are sweet, patient as we practice our Spanish, and feed us delicious things...
Oh, and if you are going in for tea or coffee, try the chamomile cookie... it will surprise you almost as much as the oasis of the place itself.
I saw this place for a while before I had the chance to go inside. Â The owner/workers are kind and friendly, and we had a nice chat when I was there. Â The place is small and narrow, and pleasingly quiet.
I haven't had any true food there, but I did have a strong and rich americano with not too much cream, thank you very much. Â They also have some brought-in baked goods, and I had a ridiculously good chocolate chip cookie. Â It's ironic that it's near my gym...
I'm glad to have this place in the 'hood. Â I will happily go back for a cup of coffee and to try something else sweet!
Beans and Vines is located in the rugged little neighborhood of Inwood, far uptown in Manhattan. The surrounding shops/restaurants wouldn't really suggest that a place like this could really survive here, but, gladly, it thrives.
This joint is really small. Not kind of small, REALLY small. But the food and service here are incredible. I believe we had Alex helping us, tall guy with a big smile on his face, very polite and quick to help.
I ordered what Alex called a 'Dominican version of a burger' and a Lemonade. Good choice, great taste. Fillet mignon mixed with Sirloin, on a pita with a very nice pinkish mayonnaise based sauce. The plate looked very fancy and nicely decorated with the fries on the side all prepped up and seasoned.
All in all, this place was great. Regardless of the small space, it's very nicely decorated, very quiet, and aids in escaping the loud busy life of the city.
I think I spent maybe $12 dollars here, so no complains there. I highly recommend this joint to anyone in the uptown area!
When a wine snob tells you "Oh, you've GOT TO come to this place" and it's a wine bar. Â You generally don't argue, however when you're in Inwood, you have to question "Really"? Â In this case, she was spot on and after going into this with another wine snob, I decided "why not take the plunge"?
Quite literally a hole in the wall, this place does have a good selection of wine, but their dessert, particularly the coconut flan. Â Holy Mary, mother of God, that flan is ridiculously good. Â Rich, dense, in a raspberry coolie with caramel sauce on the side. Â Oh my dear lord, that is good.
This is your standard small wine bar, very intimate, with a great staff. Â Definitely worthwhile to go into on occasion for a drink.
So deCafe went away and has been replaced by this place called Beans & Vines. It's a wine bar/restaurant that serves coffee and tea, but it's definitely not a cafe.
That's right. Gone is the free wi-fi and the cafe feel, but at least they added more seats and decent chairs. Not that it matters as it's no longer a place to bring your laptop.
Had some tea here which was decent and a nibble of food that smelled good but was dubious. I may return, but hardly tempted to do so.
