I'm very sad to give this review because of the great experiences I have had in the past.
It was Friday night, and crowded, and as soon as my family walked in to tell the hostesses our reservation, they all seemed to have a frown on. So we get led to our table, and while we were looking at the wine list that was given to me by a miserable waitress, we noticed the table was ready to fall apart, like the top was spinning and loose. So, we told the miserable waitress, and she told us we had to move from our table near the fireplace to next to the salad bar. My parents and us didn't want to move right next to the bar. When the hostess came over and led us to the new table, I asked her if we could sit at another location, not near the bar, and she looked up at me with a nasty look and snapped "your sitting right there!" and pointed to another area. Okay lady.
So we order our food with a different waiter, who was a zombie. My dad got clams casino, and they were literally made with bad clams. Disgusting. We were finally able to find the guy who brought them to us and told him to take them back. No apology or anything and gave us a look like "yah right people". We got our main courses and I ordered steak Au Poivre, and I ordered it medium rare and got it well done and leathery. I was so sick of the place and attitudes, I didn't even bother to send it back.
So desert time, I ordered a chocolate cake special, and they bring it, and my wife notices right away, right on top, a rotten strawberry. How the hell do you let that slip by?
This was the worst visit I have had there, and don't think I'll be going back any time soon. If you are too busy, turn away the people. Obviously the staff was burned out from the wait staff to the chefs. It was only 6:00 too. I haven't been treated that bad by a staff (about 5 different people in this case) in a long time. The Depot better address these issues real soon, because I know I'm never going back.
Haven't been to he Depot since I mode to Beverly 8 years ago. Â Stopped in last night after I got off the train from the Bs game.
Sat at the bar and had an absolute perfect blue cheese burger and fries with a few glasses of wine.
Honestly, one of the most delicious burgers I've had in some time and, certainly, the best in the area.
Will be back for sure!
Recently went out for an all-girls 40th b-day dinner; waited over half-hour for our reservations (one would think a place like this would offer a little compensation, nothing doing),,,very loud and crowded on the Restaurant side,, Found the food to be very pricey for what we got, grilled salmon not very seasoned, medallions in a demi-glaze was ok, average food all around, and we had a little of everything, good mashed potatoes, unable to get some items that are available on the Tavern side (French fries, burgers) not a big deal; nice salad bar and bread; several wait staff taking care of the table, a little confusing, but friendly enough,,,
Not likely to return,,,bill totaled over $180 with only one glass of wine, two sodas, no dessert or appetizers,,,(to some, it might not seem too pricey for five gals with healthy appetites, but when you factor in very little "wow" factor, too pricey)
I've come here off and on for a few years now. Â Been in the dining room for family dinners and the bar for trivia and just hanging out. Â The food is always OK - the steaks are probably the only thing to come here for, but they are expensive! Â Anyways, I came here about a week ago on a Sunday night to grab a quick beer and bite before heading into town. Â Long story short, the bar tender ignored us as we sat at the empty bar and then was rude after we placed our orders. Â She either wanted us to miss our train or not get our food in time. Â Thank goodness for another server that was in the bar area who brought out our food himself and alerted us that our train was here. Â I hate giving a restaurant a poor rating just because of one incident, but it seriously bothered me and completely turned me off from this place.
Review Source:I used to love hanging out on the bar side of this restaurant, but I'm not going back. Â
I dropped by to watch the Pats on Monday Night Football, and I thought I'd have a hard time getting a seat, but nope...the place was almost deserted. Â There was no waitress on, so the bartender kept having to run out and wait on people herself. Â
The food quality has gone way downhill...I guess the steaks there are OK, but I usually go for a burger, and this burger was way over spiced, way overcooked and it had that oily, burnt taste you get when you have too much flame from the grill. Â I kept belching that bad boy up all night long...the missus was not happy with me.
The worst thing is that their tap beers are now $5.30. Â No s%^t. Â A guy cant even afford to get ripped in this join anymore.
So...there were just two of us and we each had a burger and a (few) frosties. Â The bill was $100. Â No s%^t. Â I'm done with this place...back to dive bars for me.
AND...not one single biker chick in the place.
AND...my personal pet peeve...you yupster parents bringing your wee-ones into the bar and taking up good adult seating is just ignorant. Â Nobody wants to listen to your little darlin's scream and holler while you and Mrs Yupster keep your nose buried in your iPhone. Â Stay on the restaurant side or stay home. Â That goes pretty much across the board for me.
Ride safe.
Atmosphere was nice only because of the old building with high ceilings. Â Bit too noisy, though. Â Salad bar which I was told was exceptional was a bit skimpy. Â The wheat bread was a bit on the burned side. Â Blue cheese dressing was watery, though pleased with the good amount of blue cheese chunks in it.
The main course: we both ordered a 16 ounce prime rib. Â So, why when they come out does mine look abundantly larger and more like a roast than a prime rib? Â My wife;'s smaller 16 ounce looked and tasted more like it should, mine was too thick and tasted more like a pot roast than a prime rib.
Wait staff was fine, though they should explain the original waiter is for seating, taking drink and food orders and then they hand off to another. Â Service, though, was okay and steady.
In short, for $29 that prime rib should have been stupendous, it was just average at best. Â Most of the selections on the menu are way overpriced. Â We get a $10.99 prime rib in Haverhill on Tuesdays that is bigger and better!
Not going to be a return customer.

Went here last weekend for a friends birthday dinner. They were able to accomadate a party of 18 unlike the original place he had in mind. They had a nice room in the basement that had four or five table set up for about 6-8 people per table. We ended up doing some re-arranging and put three of the tables together so we could sit family style. The waitress we had was very good. She had help with the initial drink orders and bringing the food down but was otherwise on her own. She earned her tip :-) Salad bar came with pretty much every entree ordered. It was decent. Not great like another salem place mentioned by another reviewer but it did the job. I like that they had bread and cheese there for helpings as well.
I got the crab cakes to start and then the scallops and 7 oz sirloin for dinner which came with the salad bar and another side- I got the rice pilaf. I was obviously more hungry than my tummy actually was. I didn't even touch the steak or 4 of the 5 scallops becuase by that time I was stuffed. At the rice because I don't like left over rice. It didn't seem like it was cooked enough- almost but not quite enough for my tasting. I liked it. Kind of pricey and parking can be tricky depending on when you go. I may go back but won't seek it out.
A really unique atmosphere. I was really impressed with how cozy they were able to make such a random place. It is just a very warm place to hang out and grab a drink.
The food was good, though I felt a little overpriced. I got a salad bar and it was $12; a little much since the salad bar wasn't anything special. The service was also a little slow, but they had one waitress for a bar full of people. Not really her fault, but a little speedier would of been kind of nice.
Overall, I really did like this place. I have every intention of going back here.
If I ever doubted Yelp, I shall no more.
These reviews are so very true when it comes to the Beverly Depot.
Ambiance- 5 Star. Â High ceilings, brick walls, candlelit tables, train occasionally coming through. Â It feels warm and friendly, but sophisticated with a hint of soft classical music .
Salad bar- 4 Star. Â Its nice, normal, fresh, and basic.
Food-5 star. Â We were testing the place for a big party we are throwing.
FRIED CALAMARI--crispy with a hint of spice. Â fresh. Very good.
BEEF WELLINGTON---perfect. like something from "Hell's Kitchen" that chef wouldn't throw down. Â Cooked perfectly. presented very well.
PRIME RIB (10 oz)---more than enough for anyone. Â No fat, cooked perfect and was surprisingly hot.
CHICKEN OVER PASTA--cooked perfect al dente. Mushroom sauce that was rich, but light. Â Very good dish.
CREME BRULEE- Was good, but do to the slow service, arrived cold and lifeless. Â Which brings me too...
Service- 2 Star. Â We all enjoyed an amazing experience, constantly dampened by confusing wait staff changes, slow service, and distractions of other tables desperately looking for their wait staff. Â We tried and tried to like everything--hey we were paying 20+ an entree, 8 dollars for Merlot...come on we worked hard for our money.
In the end it ruined our experience. Â Couldn't figure who really was our waiter, and a group consensus that SERVICE IS EVERYTHING.
We shouldn't have to work so hard to spend our money. Â Can I cook Beef Wellington? Â Nope, but its not worth another trip back because I want to feel the seamless experience of dining out. Â Not a friend, or love, just seamless service that allows me to enjoy my evening out with good company.
Terrible service! I've been staring at my empty water glass for over 15 minutes. Took me an hour to get a second martini. For the prices they charge, someone should be stationed at the table. We have 3 different people waiting on us, you would think service would be faster. Not coming back here. Just got my glass filled with water and a dose of attitude. 1 star for the fresh bread.
Review Source:First of all!The worst margarita I had in my life!!!I mean HOW DO YOU SCREW UP A MARGARITA???I didn't even think it's possible! It had this disgusting artificial taste, very sweet, that I have NO IDEA what ingredient it came from. And it wasn't even served in the right glass, it was served in a water glass!!What a disgrace!
So anyway, I was there for a big family dinner (anniversary), there were 11 of us. The food was BLAH! baked stuffed shrimp is just shrimp with some sauce on it (smth like cream cheese) and bread crumbs on top (that I accidentally inhaled and almost suffocated). I still don't get why it's called STUFFED shrimp.
The prime rip wasn't special either. The rice was good. Every dinner comes with a salad bar, which is ok, had delicious Parmesan cheese.
The worst thing - they charge A LOT for all this mess.
The only thing I liked is the interior - it's pretty cool.
But I won't be back!I can have a way better meal ( and an excellent margarita!!!)at Grassfields for half the price!!
I am writing this review fresh from a very disappointing dinner there this past Saturday February 12th. In short- the service is deplorable and the food not edible.
My husband and I went in for dinner with another couple, we arrived at 7pm (without reservations- 1st mistake) we were told the wait would be about an hour, and we were directed toward the bar- which was fine with us.
We were lucky enough to grab a high top, and settled in for a few beverages and ordered an appetizer- the wine & the mozzarella and tomato salad was the only positive from the entire evening. Our waitress in the bar was wonderful as well- I am sorry I cannot remember her name- but she was fantastic, attentive, and friendly. In fact it was our waitress that pointed out that we had still not been called for a table at 8:30, so she went to check and was informed that the hostess had "forgot about us" although our name was clearly written on the list in front of her.
So around 8:45 we finally get seated in the basement, which reminded me of The Crypt in the US Capitol Building! We were seated in the corner, against the freezing, drafty stone walls, right beneath an A/C unit that was blowing a draft right on our table. Then we sat there for ten minutes before our waitress, Liz, finally decided to show up, with the attitude that we were inconveniencing her somehow? Seriously, she did not look one of us in the eye and couldn't be bothered to ask us if we needed drinks, just "are we ready to order". She did not offer up any specials, or anything.
My husband decided to just order the chowder as he was leery. I ordered the shrimp scampi appetizer with a side of asparagus & mashed potatoes.  Our friends both ordered entrees, one the Prime Rib rare, and the other a stuffed fish entrée. Their meals came with the salad bar, which was ok, but looked a bit messy and very low on a number of vegetables. The cheese looked scary so we passed on that altogether. The dressing section was just plain disgusting.
So around 9:45 we start getting pissed that we have not received our meals yet- WTF? Our waitress is nowhere to be found, so we flag over this other waiter and he says he will try to find out where our food and waitress are. A few minutes later he appears with our food- still no Liz. Then we all discover that ALL of our meals are cold. Not warm, not hot- but COLD. Now we are beyond pissed. My shrimp scampi looks like someone took a flame torch to the top of it and burned all of the garlic to a very bad black color. Seriously- they served it that way and it was COLD. The Asparagus was cold and limp, and the hollandaise tasted like yellow goo without any flavor. No mashed potatoes- they forgot those- but upon request they showed up and they were actually warm, but unfortunately had no flavor. Since we had no bread/butte offered to us I was unable to even improve them with butter. The chowder- cold- husband did not eat it. The Prime Rib was cold, as was the fish entrée. Did our waitress return to check on us or if we were happy with our meals? No, of course not, she never returned to the table at all in fact.
We flagged down the waiter again and advised him of our dissatisfaction and he stood there blankly, so my friend basically told him to take the Prime Rib and shove it, thereby ending our dinner. The waiter took the Prime Rib off the bill after much debate, as he tried telling my friend his Prime Rib was not supposed to be warm since it was rare- seriously how ridiculous is that? So the waiter never even bothered to apologize and the manager never bothered to take the time to approach us either. Very bad business practice.
At any rate, the best part of our night was in the bar having wine and appetizers, everything else hence forth was just plain horrible. I was very disappointed and will not be returning, and so far I have told every single solitary person I can about our bad experience there, and they will tell their friends, and their friends will tell theirs and so on.
Don't waste your time, energy or money on the Beverly Depot; they obviously do not understand the meaning of customer service or the value of a customer.
I first went here a few months ago with my brother and sister-in-law. Â I was very impressed with the food and service.
I went back on Thanksgiving Day. Â I was able to get a reservation in the early afternoon. Â I again chose the pork chops. Â The portions are HUGE! Â 2 GIANT, and I do mean giant being at least 6-inch thick pork chops in a wonderful maple honey mustard sauce, garlic mashed potatoes were also great, with the garlic not overwhelming. Â Again, the portions are huge! Â I had enough for an entire meal the next day!
The REAL reason I keep coming back? Â *drools* Oh.My.Gawd, the desserts! Â I had been craving fried ice cream for quite awhile. Â When I went with my bro and SIL? Â I finally satisfied that craving. Â Me and SIL decided to order 2 things we both were drooling over to share with each other: the fried ice cream and something entirely new for me: white chocolate creme brulee. Â Our men were positively giggling their butts off at us both as we practically orgasmed in our seats while sharing both.
For thanksgiving? Â I again had the white chocolate creme brulee there...and I was an oinker and brought home for later the chocolate mousse layer cake. Â Once again? Â Simply devine.
HIGHLY recommend this place. Â The ambience is also nice. Â Try to get a seat near the roaring fireplace.
Interesting location: it is located inside the former B&M passenger station on the still-active MBTA Commuter Rail line from North Station (thus, The Depot is easily accessible). Â Dinner only establishment! Â Curious and unique ambiance. Â Still, it is pretentious and a bit pricey for what one gets. Â Salad bar is appealing, but not super special [the one at Victoria Station has far better/wider variety].
The wait staff is uneven it its abilities/professionalism. Â After placing one's order, the wait time can be too long. Â Main restaurant can b e quite noisy; room can be drafty or too hot--depending upon where one is seated. Â
Food is uneven in its quality; well-done ends to be medium+.  Do  not order baked potatoes: often they are rubbery/cool.  Portions are average-sized.  Fish items vary in the quality of preparation.  Indeed, most desserts are good but expensive (considering the cost of the ingredients and what one receives).  Â
Attached bar [also serving pub grub] is a nice asset. Â One used to get a free meal at The Depot on one's birthday; even this tradition has faded.
Disappointing dining experience overall; not good value when quantity and cost of food is considered.
I always looked at The Beverly Depot with my nose in the air....the type of place my mom would adore and have 4 bags of oyster crackers in her purse at the end of the night to prove it. Â Well I was wrong. Â This is actually a place worth trying.
Now, let's remember....this is not The French Laundry, and makes no claims. Â Just good old fashion standards done well and good for the whole family....picky eaters and all. Â
The salad bar is simple. Â Nothing over the top....but I love a salad bar in a restaurant. Â While I am normally not a steak eater, I had to go for it at the depot and went with the Baked Stuffed Shrimp/Steak combo which came with buttery perfect mashed potatoes. Â The shrimp was perfect. Â Not too greasy. Â Not too fancy. Â Just good old fashion baked stuff shrimp, the way I remember it as a kid and before my taste buds emptied my pocketbook. Â The steak was cooked perfectly, but I had to take most of it home as I was STUFFED. Â It made for a great lunch.
The service was great and the atmosphere cozy. Â It is in this amazing space with high ceilings, yet the wood and the fireplace gives it character.
Had an amazing coconut fried ice cream dessert, and learned they give 1/2 off on your birthday!
I have not been since they remodeled but I hear the place looks great.
Upon my last visit, I had a nice experience. The place doesn't look like much on the outside, the inside is very grand in appearance.
There is a huge salad bar which I very much loved! Our waitress was incredibly friendly and we enjoyed good food by the fireplace. I ordered the chicken florentine which was fantastic. All of those who I ate with enjoyed their food. The dessert menu is extensive and offers a lot of selection to make any guest happy!
I'm looking forward to going back to see the latest renovations!
We were visiting our friend Matt in Salem and were looking for a "pub" type of place for dinner. We pulled up Yelp on the iPhone and the Droid and Beverly Depot was pretty highly rated in this category.
The atmosphere was really good, I loved the building, but who lights a fire when it is 100 degrees outside?
Also, very much not a pub.
The food was good (I just finished my leftovers) and plentiful. I had chicken with crab, asparagus, and hollandaise and of course the salad bar.
The other boys had steaks (Matt's came with scallops). They had no complaints, except that the scallops were clearly bay scallops and not sea scallops as advertised.
In my opinion, it would be a good venue for a business dinner.
While it may not have "steakhouse" in its name, the Beverly Depot is one of the best steakhouses on the North Shore. High quality, aged beef cooked excellently. Take your sweatpants off, put on some slacks, and have a steak you'll remember.
As always, food comes first. The steaks are at the forefront here. Great cuts of meat dry aged and cooked to perfection. Whether you're like my wife and want it blue, or you're a weirdo who wants your steak medium well, you will get a nicely seared, moist steak cooked just the way you'd draw it up in your head. I'm a fan of steak au proive and no one does it better than the Depot.
The rest of the menu is all solid. Any sides you get with your meal and all of the apps are good. The mini-Wellingtons are even better than they sound. I forced myself to deny the steaks and try the seafood selections just for Yelpers and they are all great. Perhaps the only flaw in their food is that the lobster pie tends to be dry. I feel guilty saying that since it is loaded with big chunks of fresh lobster, but there is usually a chunk of bread crumbs that the butter didn't sink in to.
Also, all diners get the salad bar included with their dinner. The salad bar isn't outstanding, but nice. I'm not a huge fan of salad bars and I'd rather they be left to buffet restaurant, but this one is decent. Most people love the bread and the parmesan at the end of the bar, but it's self serve and I'm weirded out by bread and cheese that all of the other diners have handled.
The good news is that the Depot's food deserves five stars. The bad news is that the other stuff drags it down a notch. When you walk into the restaurant, you'll see a big desk with a computer monitor and some papers. Think this is the hostess? Nope. This is someone who apparently answers the phone and doesn't budge from her station. If you wait there for her to acknowledge you, she'll ignore you for 30 seconds and then tell you to walk around the corner to be seated. The seating is all 2 and 4 top tables in rickety chairs and tables that should have been ignored at a yard sale in 1998. Neither comfortable nor elegant. Also, the wait service is unusual. I have to note that the staff themselves are awesome. Polite, friendly, and super-professional. What's weird is that you're apt to have 3+ servers in one dinner. You check in with one person, then someone else seats you, then Waiter 1 comes over and takes your drink order, Waiter 1 then takes your dinner order, Waiter 2 brings your dinner and checks on you, Waiter 3 then takes over and fills drinks and checks you out. I don't know if their shifts are staggered or if it's their system or what, but it always makes me feel like I'm driving away the staff.
Don't let my whining about the secondary features worry you. I cannot imagine having a bad experience at the Beverly Depot. I might complain about their seating, but I'd stand in an iron maiden to taste their food.
I was really excited about trying this place because it sounded pretty unique. Â it was a huge let down. Â The service was really slow, for no seemingly good reason (it was a weeknight and not terribly busy); the food was only mediocre and for the high prices I expected better; and while some areas of the restaurant were nice (i.e. by the windows where you can watch the commuter rail), other areas were totally run down and could use a renovation (the bar, bathroom, and downstairs rooms come to mind).
Review Source:Boy, does the chef at Beverly Depot love butter. Â "Chef Butter" drenches almost every edible food item at this restaurant in the stuff. Â I ordered a seafood casserole with a side of vegetables. Â I would expect the casserole to be on the buttery side, but was turned off by sad, minimal chunks of crabmeat swimming in yellow liquid. Â
Meanwhile, my poor veggies were mamed when "Chef Butter" steamed every nutritional property out of them and then administered a hefty Paula Deen sized amount of his favorite ingredient all over them. Â Maybe I'm crazy, but I like the taste of vegetables. Â These didn't taste like vegetables.
And, to top it all off, I practically had to take out a second mortgage on my home to pay for the meal. Â Seriously, money not well spent. Â What a bummer! Â
However, something can be said for the friendly wait staff --We ended up adding an extra member to our party at the last minute and asked to switch tables. Â Our waitress was very accomodating and had no problem with our request. Â The wine list/ cocktail and beer menu were pretty decent as well.
All in all, not the best dining experience, but certainly not the worst. Â Maybe Chef Butter will take his sweet-cream butt somewhere else.
I'll admit that a big part of the appeal of this place for me is the fact that it is located within an old train station. Â You literally feel like you've stepped back in time when you enter this building, and it's hard not to feel like a part of history.
I have only eaten upstairs in the pub style restaurant, since the downstairs seemed a little formal for myself and my friend at the time.
My burger was really good and we received very prompt service by a friendly server.
Again, I do admit the location of this place was a huge plus for me. Â I love historic buildings, and this was one of the nicer restoration jobs that I have seen. Â It was also cool have the people and the trains coming and going. Â While it may be standard pub fare, the atmosphere is what makes it really cool.
Save your money and eat BEFORE or AFTER you come here for drinks. Â The food is pretty pricey, and not inspired in any way. Â The steaks were simply okay. Â We have much better luck cooking them ourselves. Â The baked fish was dry, and the famous "salad bar" has about 5 things available. Â How is that a salad bar???
As for drinks - the bar side is beautiful inside with old brick walls and wood. Â I would suggest it over the dining room any day. Â Go in for a drink or two - the atmosphere is simply divine in the bar.
Can't believe I have been living on the North Shore this long and have not tried this establishment before this weekend. Â I am really glad I finally got here. Â The waitstaff were very nice and attentive, plus they helped me choose my meal. Â But got to tell ya, the portions are scrumptiously huge! Â
I had the Chicken Florentine w/garlic mashed and wow do they know how to make it right! Â the pastry shell was buttery good, the chicken was moist and the spinach & mushroom inside was wonderfully mixed and flavorful. Â And the garlic mashed was divine- nicely mashed, seasoned w/nice bits of garlic inside. Â Yummmm!!! Â
The food was a bit on the spendy side ($20 - $30 a plate), but it's good food and as I mentioned the portions are big.
The salad bar was quite the nice surprise- At first I didn't think there was much to it (lettuce, cukes, tomatoes, onions, pepperocini's, etc) but there was also a huge hunk of cheese and bread to be sliced and enjoyed w/the salad. Â It was a nice surprise.
It's an old train station, so the room is big, cavernous and brick. Â It's pretty cool and would be great to hear music in. Â Surprisingly, the trains did not disturb our conversations.
Overall, I was very pleased w/it and will be going back.
Great food, great service but not really worth the wait. Â Too many tables make for a hazardous trip to the salad bar. Â The fairly unfriendly host staff is REALLY off-putting. Â If you get a smile, the host is likely experiencing a gas pain. Â If they're not miserable, they're power mad (we have NO tables upstairs and it will be LONG wait for one). Â Get over yourselves, Â you're a steakhouse on the commuter rail.
Review Source:I've been going here for ages, spent many birthdays getting a special birthday dinner here. Â This isn't my favorite place, not by a longshot, but the Beverly Depot never disappoints. Â It is one of those places that remains the same year after year. Â Never have bad service, never slow, the food is always good, and while it is pricey, you deal with it. Â If you want a cheap steak go to a 99 Restaurant.
This place is all about the steak. Â Prime rib is the best around, but my favorite is the Steak Au Poive. Â This is just to die for. Â
Salad bar is pretty basic, but they rotate the stuff often, so it is fresh. Â The cheese and bread at the end kicks ass.
They have all sorts of cool drink concoctions to choose from and the desserts are sinful. Â It is almost unfair to have such desserts after a gutbusting meal.
This is one of those once in a while places for me. Â I generally reserve it for something like a birthday (eat for half price too, I think) or when a group wants a decent meal out.
From what I hear on the pub side of things, the place is ok, the service lacks unless you're a regular. Â I don't go over there on the rare occasions that I do go to the Depot, but I figured I'd throw that in there.
As far as Beverly goes, this is as good as it gets.
My husband & I love this place. Great place to go when you are looking for a good salad & steak. I also love the chicken wrapped in puff pastry.
Good salad bar - skip the appetizers or you'll fill up too fast.
Love the surroundings of the main room upstairs. Sometimes we eat in the bar when there is a wait for a dining room table.
This is a place we always come back to.
I have been eating here since I was a kid. This is hands down my favorite restaurant ever. I have never ever ever gotten a bad meal here. I love everything about it.
The unlimited salad bar with bread and cheese.
The entrees - everything is always cooked exactly how I like it. Everything, and this is even during my "i only eat chicken" phase during elementary school.
The Staff - always friendly and fun. They sing to you if they know its your birthday!
The desserts - never a disappointment.
The space itself is HUGE and they cater. Parking is never a problem either.
You should eat here.
Love this place. Â We always forget about it until we are driving through Beverly looking for a place to eat. Â We usually stay in Salem or go in to Boston but Beverly has some good choices including the Depot. Â I've never had a bad meal here. Â Not sure I would go for only their food... we love the building and the atmosphere...it's an old train station and its beautiful. Tonight we sat next to the fireplace and had a great meal. Â I had the stuffed shrimp...4 large shrimp stuffed with a creamy clam and breadcrumb stuffing. It's very rich and is a great flavor. Â We started with the beef wellington appetizer. Â I've never seen wellington offered as an app....love it! Â It's bacon wrapped tenderloin in a puff pastry cooked perfectly with a red-wine demi. Â My husband said it was the best app he's ever had...I think he says that about every app but it was pretty good nonetheless. Â He had the chicken florentine which was very good as well. Â The sun-dried tomato sauce got cold very quickly but it was tasty and the chicken was juicy and not overcooked at all. The salad bar is great...no peas on it though! Â And I don't know what people are talking about when they say this place is pricey! Â In-house aged sirloin for under $25? Our dinner for two tonight included apps, drinks, meal and dessert for $75...quite a deal.
They are known for their great house-aged beef and also their coffee drinks. Â The coffee is served in a baked sugar coated glass and a scoop of thick real whipped cream. Â It's the best dessert on the menu. Â
The place is always busy on the weekends so we like to blue-hair it at 5:00 and we always get a seat. Â Wear a sweater... no insulation in the old building so it gets cold unless you are near the fire.
I've been to the Depot several times now and each time they have failed to disappoint. Â The food and service have always been consistently good each time I've gone whether out for a nice dinner in the dining room or something more casual in the bar area. Â Cocktails are generous and very reasonably priced. Â I think the martinis are all under $9. Â Try the blueberry martini, it's BERRY good. Â In fact, it's so good it BLUE my mind. Â Ha ha! Â Oh wait, you're not laughing. Â (Stop trying so hard, Tom.)
Last time I went I ate in the bar and had the Iowa Hawkeye, which was sliced sirloin served on top of French bread with garlic butter and choice of side. Â Sumptuous and a good value at something like $10.95. Â Why go to a place like Crapplebee's when you can much better food in a much better atmosphere for the same money? Â I've had steak here in the dining room as well, which was wonderful. Â I have a lot of confidence in a a restaurant that's willing to serve their steaks Pittsburgh style, that is, black on the outside and raw inside. Â The only entree I wasn't completely thrilled with was the crab stuffed scrod. Â Not a bad dish, just lacking in flavor somehow for me. Â Oh yes, and I love the salad bar! Â There just aren't enough of these around anymore. Â
The atmosphere is classy but casual. Â There's no need to get dressed up, but if you did, you wouldn't feel out of place. Â It's a good place for a date, although it can get rather noisy. Â It is a working train station, afterall. Â Being so easily accessible via commuter rail, some of you die-hard "I never leave Boston because Boston is the center of the universe and everything that's not in Boston sucks" types might even find a reason to leave town for an evening out.
I grew up near here and this was always our go-to celebratory place. Birthdays, anniversaries, even Thanksgiving. I don't know what to say about this except.... it's amazing. Last year I went to Europe for 6 weeks and all I wanted when I returned to the US through Boston was Beverly Depot. This place may not be the fanciest or nicest, but for reasonably-priced food that is exceptional quality in a really classy atmosphere, you can't beat Beverly Depot. Though I live in LA now, this place will always hold a very special place in my heart.
In my opinion, don't bother getting anything except the prime rib. Yeah, other stuff is good there, but this place is known for their prime rib, and it is really darn special. Prime rib is my favorite food, and I've had it all over this country and even as far away as Italy, and that at the Beverly Depot (and its sister establishments) is far and away the best. I mean, they age their own beef. It's actually affordable, and in my 20+ years of going to this place at least once a year, their prices haven't even gone up that much.
There is no need to pay for the extra fancy sides. Grab some bacon and cheese from the AMAZING salad bar and kick up your own baked potato if you want. The "lighter side" entrees are nice because you still get the salad bar but also the great meat.
Go here, and get prime rib. It's literally to die for. I'm 3000 miles away writing this review and I'd give anything for a slab of the Beverly Depot prime rib right about now.
Great steak and at a reasonable enough price.  They give you huge portions of steak from about 21$-30$ for most of the steaks.  I had a 12oz. filet mignon  (28$) and it was HUGE as well as very good.  My girlfriend has the baked stuffed shrimp (outstanding) with a 7oz sirloin which i thought was better than the filet mignon.  You can order just the top sirloin steak for 21$ which I think I would do if i came here again. All the entrees come with their salad bar which is good, but they need a honey mustard dressing!  The fresh baked breads are very good and i was munching on them and dipping them in the ever so soft butter that was at our table when we sat down.  Service is good but could be better for how much people spend at this restaurant.  I recommend staying away from the substituting sides if you are budget conscious since we both subbed it was an extra 8$ to the check and while mashed potatoes were good, the baked stuffed potato wasn't and they were costly additions. Bonus: The train scaring my girlfriend during dinner added entertainment for me.  Also they do birthday 1/2 price entrees now with valid ID, it was my girlfriends birthday so she got her 24$ entree for 12$, but we made up for that with sides and dessert.
Review Source:I was taken here last night on a date, she was introducing me to the wonders of the north shore, as stated in my richardson review. Â Maybe its the little things in life but I was excited walking over the commuter rail tracks to get into the restaurant, sometimes I get excited to push the button for a stop on the good ol 73. Â We were seated right away after my lady friend got nervous that they wouldnt take reservations when she had called earlier in the day. Â The waiters were very good at coming over and checking to make sure everything was alright but not enough that it annoyed me. Â The salad bar had very fresh vegetables and I dug the ice cold plates. Â The food was pretty good, I later realized its basically the same menu as dandelion green which is ok in my book. Â I thought it would be alot more money but I didnt think it broke the bank for dinner for two.
Review Source:This is a great restaurant for a romantic dinner. I love the ambiance of this place! I love steak, so even though this place is on the pricey side, it is definitely WELL WORTH the extra money!
Not a seafood eater, so the only thing I have really had here is beef. The tenderloin medallions are my favorite, and the french onion soup is absolutely amazing. They have a wonderful salad bar with fresh cheese and baked breads.
This has always been a great date place for my fiance and I. The Dandelion Green in Burlington and the Hardcover on Route 1 in Danvers are owned by the same company. Even though they have different names, the menus are exactly the same.
Based on the entrees, I would give the Depot 2.5-3 stars, but their salad bar and desserts are great. Â The Depot in downtown Beverly is located in an old train depot building. Â They are part of the Barnsider group of restaurants, which includes the Hardcover, Dandelion Green, and another one in CT, I believe. Â I have eaten here on several occassions and find the entrees mediocre. Â There is nothing that wows you about the dishes. Â Of course, they are known for steak and I don't eat steak. Â The salad bar & bread are good though, as are most of the desserts (don't do the strawberry shortcake). Â It can get loud in there and it's still a train station, so the trains are loud too. Â Service can vary. Â The other night we first had an unfriendly waiter, but he maybe had a break or something because then a new waiter, who was great, appeared. Â Entrees are about $20 and up. Â It's pretty basic food; steaks, chicken, fish, veal, with sides of potatoes or rice and vegetables. Â Also, they do free birthday entrees. Â However, the bar is a nice place to grab an afterwork drink.
