This review might make me show my liberal progressive hippieish uppity roots. I couldn't find a decent bar or think of one at least so yelp provides this place as around the corner. Why not?
I may as well give up because two places in our area have spoiled me. One is the Black Star co-op which is my favorite all around pub for food and drink. The Westside Alehouse is second due to friendly staff, decent food and a great beer selection in Round Rock.
Big Shotz is a clean, hole in the wall with a pool table in back. I don't like sports, don't watch sports and I also don't care for flavored vodka. That might skew my review. Drink prices are cheap but I usually just have a beer. The pool table in back is fine. It's a bar, what else do you say?
Here's where I turn irritable. I noticed people smoking. I didn't mind the smoke at first. The fans seem to be pulling the air up so not so bad. When I left, I wreaked of it. I haven't had that happen in so long I forgot what it's like when someone smokes inside a building.
I'd consider going here again but it's only if other places I enjoy more aren't open.
Ive been here at least 2x. Once we came in and were playing pool when we noticed there was a tiny tv outside that had the spurs game on. b/c my fiancee loves me despite my love for the SPURS he asked the bartender to put that game on to the bigscreen in the pool table area. Love love loved that.
2nd time we came in here was a few weekends ago. We had the shot of the day. whatever thatwas on saturday. They were having their 1 year anniversary party and they were having an 80's party. They were cutting cake or something but I guess that was just for the regulars b/c we were never offered any which is fine, it was a liquid kinda diet that day.
We had a few drinks, great waitress/bartender girl, very sweet. Too bad she was leaving for Chicago b/c she was very nice without being too "so what are you ordering next kinda vibe" Loved her!. And she didnt charge me for a drink I ordered that was gross. . not her fault a vodka tonic with lime tasted like an air freshner sitting in my car mixed with pine sol .. .but the fact that she didnt charge me for it without even asking will have me returning for sure.
DIdnt like that the only guy in the bar smoking decided to sit next to me after I just straighted my hair that morning. . I hate smelling like an ash tray. My only wish is that this place not allow smoking indoors and it would be absolute chill. Â
Love the music too: 80s music and sounds like they just plugged in my ipod.
Wasn't a good experience this time!! Not many people here...boring....too smoky, even though the ceiling fans were on....boring...mainly guys hanging out, hardly any women to chat with...boring...and did I say it was too smoky, where it seemed as if I smoked and I don't!! Hopefully if I go back it'll be much better!!
Review Source:Hubby and I have dropped by this place about 3 times. Â It's a great place to grab a beer and catch a game. Â There isn't food though which is always a bummer in a drinking establishment. Â We went back more then once because beer wasn't bad but they had great new country music playing on the radio which I loved. Â It was a nice relaxed environment...reason we won't go back again.... the smoking. Â If you are a smoker, you'll love the bar but as a non-smoker, I'd rather go across the street and not smell afterwards. Â Service was always great with the bartender waiting tables as well. Â Overall ok place but like other raters have said, won't go back due to the smoking.
Review Source:Only a few taps to chose from and the happy hour prices are high. Â This is a place that is close to work and is fun but I need better prices. Â We had high hopes but it appears they have some regulars. Â If you like shots this is your place. Â My friend tried to order something with OJ and they were out, so one of the workers went to get some and 20 minutes later hadn't returned so we left. Â
I am right there with Gary K. and his review. We felt the same way and went to a chain across the street.
I have tried this place three times. first time I went it was a good little bar. Bartenders are really friendly. A noticed a drunk patron at the end of the bar. Turned out it was the owner. Thought it a little weird for the owner to be drunk. He comped a couple of regulars tab. Which was generous of him. But I noticed that the regulars didn't tip the bartender. I own a bar so whenever I comp the tab of my friends I make sure they tip the bartender at least 40% of the tab, because they would have had to pay 100% of the tab plus 20% tip.
I came in a second time and it seemed like they were having some kind of birthday party. This couple was arguing and yelling at each other, Â and at the bartender. Both were obviously drunk. I thought I recognized the guy when I saw him. I asked one of the regulars if that was the owner. Turned out it was and the lady was his wife. Second time I've been there and the owners were drunk again. I asked the regular if it happened often. He said they get drunk about every other day at the bar.
When the owners start drinking away their profits the bar just goes down hill. I don't know why people think they make great decisions when they are drunk, especially business decisions. Really unprofessional.
My friend convinced me to go a third time even though I didn't want to. This time the bartender was drunk. I guess I'm not surprised, if the owners are drunk all the time, I don't see why the bartenders wouldn't be.
The good things about this place are that the regulars seem pretty cool and most of the bartenders are really friendly. Place seems pretty clean and they have a wide selection of liquor and beers. Which is the reason I gave it two stars instead of one.
I really wish I could give Big Shotz a higher rating, but I'd be lying if i did. Â I stopped by last weekend because it was one of the very few bars showing the UT-Rice football game (thanks a lot, Longhorn Network...). Â
It has a lot of positives actually: pretty close to my house, beer prices were good, the bar and restrooms were really clean, cool sports decor, and the owners were nice enough to order a bunch of pizza for the patrons that night.
Now for the bad stuff: the cloud of cigarette smoke that hit me as soon as I walked in, it took me about 3 minutes to get the bartender's attention because she was too busy flirting with some dude at the bar (the other bartender was actually pretty good), and it was pretty small so the drunken idiots next to me kept bumping into me.
Honestly, I would give it an extra two stars if smoking was banned, but I guess that's the clientele that they're going for. Â Too bad, because it was a pretty cool little spot other than that.
Me: Â Â Â I don't want to!
Friend: Let's give it a try anyway, it can't be that bad.
Me: Â Â Â But Matt B. warned me about it.
Friend: Let's give it a shot anyway!
Me: Â Â Â Â regrettably frowning: OK!
So we slid into Big Shotz in Round Rock next to Chuck E Cheese. Â We entered and my friend ordered a bottle of beer and I ordered a drink. Â My friend took 2 drinks of his beer and then:
Friend: Â I can't stand it let's go!
Me: Â Â Â Â Yeah!
We left.
So this is a great small local bar for those that smoke and like to drink as they smoke or play a little pool. The prices are right. Â So if you are a smoker this is the place for you. So if you do not like being in a high smoking environment then you have been warned. Â I hope they are successful because I think that smokers should have a place they can go and not worry about having to go outside and smoke. Â So if you smoke I think you will love this bar.
However, I will exorcize my right to not go here since it is a smoking environment.
As a side note I raise my one star to a three star because of the sexy, beautiful bartender on Sundays and Tuesdays after 7:30pm.
Would I go back? Â Â Mostly likely no!
Nice but very SMALL sports bar for a Friday happy hour when we went. Place is in the same parking lot with Chuck E Cheese along the eastbound Hwy 45 access road. Haven't been there during a sports Saturday but there are mid-sized flatscreens all around and a tiny stage up front apparently for a karaoke or solo artist night.
Draft beer selection is limited to just the main domestics plus Dos XX. Bottle selection is mostly domestic, too. They could really use a couple local TX brews, but they DO have their full liqour license. Oh and just forewarning for the anti-smoking nazis - yes, this is Austin ETJ so there are ashtrays on the back tables! Jim and Kelli (owners) usually bartend and are friendly. Apparently their first bar venture so I hope RR treats them well despite all the past failures around the neighborhood.
