This place is rad. Â Easily the best bar in the suburbs for the following reasons:
- friendly, knowledgeable staff
- board games
- outstanding beer selection
- cool atmosphere
I've even convinced some of my "I'm too cool for the suburbs" friends from Chicago to like this place. Â Wish there were more places like this.
I love going here and I go whenever I have a guest in town, or someone local who has never been! The beer selection is amazing and I LOVE their chocolate bacon pizza. The best part is the bookcase of games that can really start a party in your group. The only downsides are that it opens late in the day and sometimes plays the music too loud on the weekends.
Review Source:It's the little things that make me happy...like, like reviewing a restaurant that Candice G has NOT yet reviewed. In most cases, I have to leave the country to do that.
Imagine my surprise when I went to Bigby's and realized Candice G had NOT YET reviewed the place! Oh joy! Until I found out she had actually worked there. Darn...once again, I am the bride's maid rather than the bride.
So be it.
Feel like you are in a universe filled with Bud, Bud Light, and Miller? Sick of the mass produced, watered down, shy little beers that seem to be multiplying like tribbles?
Come to Bigby's. Wear jeans, wear a flannel shirt. Wear a t-shirt, whatever. Come thirsty, curious, and hungry and leave full of good beer, great knowledge imparted by a terrific staff, and a full tummy from the good eats they have. Also, if you can catch some live music there, even better.
Gene-splice your favorite independent coffee shop with your favorite micro-brew tasting room with a college apartment living room and you have Bigby's. Come hungry and thirsty and leave your "I only have a few minutes and then I have to go" outside in the parking lot. Sit, relax, drink, and experience some great beer.
This place is awesome. It looks like trash on the outside, but it's so cozy with a whole lot of personality on the inside.
It brings back memories of the cafes I used to go to as a kid and the ones I went to in Vietnam. I wish America had more places like this. I didn't eat there, but this is my new favorite bar.
My friend took me here randomly and it wasn't anything I expected.
Found this place on Yelp and knew it was right up my alley. They have a huge selection of beers and wine. I mean if you can't find one you like you have a problem!! The place is super small, we were lucky to get there right when a couple were leaving so we got thier table. otherwise no other table opened up until we left ours. I was super excited to see they had Brooklyn Blast, I had not been able to find a beer that served this since I was in New York last year. I would come back for this reason alone!! My friend is new in the whole beer drinking thing so he ordered a Angry Orchard and was happy with it. We got a little hungry so we asked to see a menu. The food selection is small, they really only have appitizers and desserts. We ordered the goat cheese dip with pitas. The was really good and you got just the right amount of pitas for the dip....I hate when you run out and still have dip!! They did have this smore skillet I wanted to try but was so full from the dip I just couldn't do it. It's on my list for next time!!
If you like craft beer Bigby's will be your little slice of heaven, and if your new to craft beers this is the perfect place to start!!
I usually dislike bars. I am almost 22... Ewwww.... Growing older.... I hate Beer! Bigsby's changed my mentality with the first bottle lol. I love Bigby's! Tonight was my first visit too!
Service:
From the get go we were greeted by a cute Asian lady. She happened to be our Hostess and Waitress for the evening. As soon as we were greeted, she proceeded to tell us about all the different beers available. I don't know a damn thing about beer lol! I have always been a Vodka and fruity drinks fellow, but she was really informative! I felt like my hand was held the whole way till we were finally seated. She explained a few terms and explained what "Craft" beer was! I really appreciated that she wasn't pretentious at all. I always feel awkward and looked down upon at bars for not knowing a lot of slang or terminology. It meant a lot being taken care of... To me a bar was a place where manly men and pretentious Guidos liked to hang out. I was more of a rave and music festival person than a club or bar socialite during my wild child years. I still go wild in the summer though lol. But yeah, she was really attentive and friendly which I appreciated a lot! I always had crap expectations for bar and club service until now. Thank You hostess! I asked for her name, but I don't want to horribly misspell it on Yelp lol.
Atmosphere:
It does not look like much from the outside. My stomach kinda sank because I don't like disappointing friends when I take them to new places. BAAAAMMM!!!!! My perception and definition of what a bar environment was completely changed as soon as we walked in. It was neither too upscale or too trashy. It didn't feel like it catered to a specific crowd. It felt as though... If you wanted to try beer or consume beer... You were welcome. The entrance is decorated with unique bottles that help you discover what you came for. The hostess will explain how everything works if you say your new, and it really is very educational and welcoming at the same time having all those decorative bottles there. What's past the entrance? Well besides the standard bar, there are many things that catch the eye. There is a nifty wall of bottlecaps, board games, comfy couches, uniquely shaped beer taps, alluring pictures on the wall, and some things that I haven't even taken the time to observe! But point is, it is a great environment to drink, and it won't scare the ladies away. The place has a special charm and is very inviting. I also love that the music isn't too loud, and there is good variety. I loved hearing the Beatles and Stairway to Heaven. I got hype!
Food:
Now I have the lowest expectations for bar and club food after many stupid times that have gotten me sick. However I was pleasantly surprised. Food was pretty good, and I didn't get sick! It all went down pretty easy and it didn't destroy me later. My favorite was the Goat cheese dip with Pita Bread. It was warm with $1 refills on Pita bread! The Pita bread was damn good too! It wasn't stale or too chewy, and the dip was rather tasty. It felt like a smooth and zesty Saxophone player was dancing in my mouth. I also tried the apple dessert and the Muddy Pig. I felt the Muddy pig was overrated... Or my tongue might not be manly enough for all that Bacon and Chocolate lol. I really wanna try the pizzas next visit!
Beer:
Man... I hate Beer... And I don't even know how to describe beer sadly... But I will try my best! I had two beers that I thoroughly enjoyed! Which is a feat already! Considering I always hated beer! I first had the Dragon's Milk which I have Sarah S. to thank for! It tasted milky with a dash of caramel and was an opaque black color. It went down smooth with a little carbonation. I hate coffee, but it kinda tasted like coffee lol. I don't know how, but I enjoyed Dragon's Milk! It went well with my food as well. The last beer I tried out was the Three Philosophers. It didn't feel carbonated at all, and it reminded me more of Red wine than beer! It kinda had a hint of cherries and had an amber color. This one went down even smoother that the Dragon's Milk, and tasted sweeter and fruitier. Anyway, that is my n00b reviews of the beers I had. I am no beer expert, always hated beer, but I really enjoyed these drinks. If you hate beer, maybe Bigsby's will change your mind too. Maybe I have never had good beer?
I will definitely come here again! I wish I could have gone here for my 21st Birthday... I feel that me and my bros are definitely going to enjoy coming here from time to time. I think.... I am going to go ahead and recommend taking a girl here as well... If she is into that sorta stuff. Even if she isn't a bar person, this place won't dampen her mood like most bars will. It is also quiet enough to have audible bro talk or one on one talks. I mean this place changed my opinion of beer and bars all in the same day. Created a new standard for me too. Not to mention the awesome Hostess that took care of us? Gee Gee!
Stopped by with my brother after dinner. It's a tradition of ours. He takes me out for a birthday dinner and we go to Bigby's afterword for some brotherly bonding and / or commiserating.
Bigby's has a friendly neighborhood bar feel to it. The beer selection is huge. They have ton's of stuff on tap and even more bottled. A pair of blackboards list whats on the rotating tap menu. You can also go to http://Beermenus.com for a list of what they currently carry. I heard the appetizers are good but haven't tried any yet. Seating is limited and it fills up quick on weekends so we sat at the piano. The noise level wasn't too bad. We could hear each other and the ladies behind us.
All in all Bigby's is a great place to relax with friends and have a few beers. It's a fantastic place for a first date too. Too bad it's a half hour away for me.
Go for the BEER and WINE. Go for the friendly warm space and the friendly hands on owner. Go not for the food...
Food was ok, mid-range and could definitely been better but the beers were cold and tasty and the whole concept is amazing. You can vote for what bottles of beer are available in the bar the next month. One of the coolest spots I've seen in a long time. Let the regulars make an impact on the place.
Board games everywhere, large tables and friendly peeps. No pretentiousness here.
This is a mini Cheers mixed with a Central Perk. Â It is a GREAT neighborhood bar, very very small. Â They have an absolutely fantastic beer selection that changes constantly. Â Tonight I had a Meantime Smoked Bock $6 (5/5 stars smoky, literally, and sort of light for a heavy beer) and a Tommyknocker Porter Winter Warmer $5 (4/5 stars - very chocolatey, heavy beer, dessert -like.) Â My husband had an O'Fallon Rager Red $6 (4/5 stars) and a Flying Dog St. Eadman's $7 (3/5). Â We also had a Spicy Bacon Pizza (4.5/5 stars), this is big, because I am NOT a pizza person. This pizza was delicious! Siracha and tomato sauce with smoked bacon (and pepperoni) - $12. YUM! Â Service was a little slow (4/5) but this very small place was very busy. Â Total bill before tip was $37 ... not too bad for 4 beers and a delicious pizza! We'll definitely go back again! I've got my eye on the apple, honey dessert!
Review Source:The beer selection is legendary even amongst city-dwellers and it blows away anything else the burbs have to offer. Plus, the staff has an abundance of knowledge about the brews poured here. I sampled quite a bit and therefore had many occasions to test the bartenders' knowledge. Also, I'm pleased to say they were always around when you needed them (aka, your glass was empty). My singular complaint is that table and bar real estate is hard to come by. I was standing around like a chump for hours before I could partake. To end on a positive note, the bartenders ended the night by hosting an impromptu Street Fighter tournament right there at the bar. Awesome.
Review Source:Thank god Bigby's is so close to me. Bigby's is such a great place to just relax with friends because it's a bar with an at home feel. Check the chalk board for what's on tap or the bottles on the shelf when you first walk in and pick your beer. Find a spot to sit back and relax. Whether you enjoy sitting at the bar or lounging on the couch or even taking a table to play a board game they have the full spectrum.
Their taps are always rotating and they even host special events like dinners with beer pairings or tap take overs! Throw a bean in the bottle if you'd like for them to carry it as you leave.
I've heard nothing but good things about their limited menu of food. I have only tried the goat cheese dip so far and it was delicious.
The one problem with Bigby's though is It's small. Get here early or risk being that awkward person (group) standing in a bad spot waiting, wanting, needing someone to leave and they won't.
Bigby, I'm sorry it took me so long to finally visit you. I don't even know how it happened considering I lived about 5 minutes away for the last year. No matter, as I have finally made it to the motherland and it's everything I've ever wanted in my life.
It's a pretty small space which is definitely noticeable on a Friday night. You probably have to come somewhat early to get a table or a couch but if you don't mind standing, then you'll be fine. At the entrance are shelves of beer bottles on one side and wine bottles on the other. One side of the shelf has all the beers they have available at the moment. The other shelf has a bunch of beers that they could get. All you have to do is put a pebble in a beer bottle and depending on how full it gets means that will be the next beer they feature. It's pretty neat getting to vote for a beer because if enough people want it, you'll get it. That's customer service right there.
They also have a bunch of stuff on tap, all of which are written on a giant chalkboard across the room. The decor is neat. The walls are plastered with bottle caps, beer cases, and taps hanging over the bar. The first time I came here was on a Thursday night. One of the bartenders came over to us and explained how everything works and showed us around a little bit. I thought that was really helpful and I appreciated getting the lowdown. The beers, of course, are amazing. If you don't know what something will taste like, just ask and they'll describe it to you and compare it to something else, or bring you a sample.
Bigby's is totally chill and void of bros and pretentious snobs. My friends and I played the board game Life while drinking beer and another time, my boyfriend and I had an intense game of Chess. What's better than drinking and playing some board games? Nothing. It's everything I want to do on a weeknight/weekend.
They don't offer much food but what they do have is great. The pizza smells delicious but I went for the muddy pig which is flatbread with chocolate and bacon. Hells yes! Just the right amount of salty and sweet. It was perfect. They also tell you which menu items go best with wine or beer, which is helpful.
I hope to make trips to Bigby's weekly because it's absolutely the perfect setting for me. Oh and it's a bar that you can actually talk to your friends in and hear them! Wins all around.
This is a craft brew lover's dream home. Everything is craft. EVERYTHING!
None of that generic, watered down, BS "Murican'" crap people swill back. Yeah, I'm a beer snot, but if I'm gonna pay money for beer, it's gonna be damn good beer!
PLUS, their food is awesome! Great pizzas. But the best part, since I'm a fatty and love sweets, is they have Nutella-smore pizza like thing. Whatever they call it, it is amazing, and makes you love it, and hate yourself at the same time!
yummm....
OH! One more thing(yeah right, just one more I'm going to tell you, the rest you go find out for yourself), they make ahhhhhhhhmazing BEER FLOATS! Can you talk about a True fat kid, craft brew lovin' girls DREAM DESSERT?!?! Root beer float? No thank you. They will never be good enough again!
I am sad that I missed Bill Murray night this year, but you can bet I'm working my schedule around it for next year!
Wow, this is a really cool place.
I was meeting someone here (HE had suggested F+H or Shiraz, but thanks to my Yelp fam, saw Bigby's was a much better choice and I made the call.) Â Before he arrived I planted myself at the bar and sort of tried to figure out what I was supposed to do. Â Thankfully the bartender (who I later learned is the owner) explained the Bigby's Way to me. Â I chose their house rye for starters. Â A few other patrons nearby also made some suggestions (very top of the shelf all the way to the right) which came in handy as the night progressed. Â It was nice to be in a place where people are friendly and don't make you feel less for being a n00b.
Later in the night, the owner came by again and illustrated the beer-rating system (beer bottles + marbles) to us. Â Horray for interactive fun! Â Now, I'm not a beer connoisseur by any means, so I only recognized maybe 2 beers. Â Everything I tried was delish. Â My companion and I probably had 8 beers between us. Â He ordered some Belgium beer which ended up being $10 of our total tab of $48.
The atmosphere is low-key and feels like your friend's house/basement bar (complete with ugly couches with ill-fitting/sliding slip-covers). Â They had some live music (a guy playing the piano/singing). Â The idea is good, but it was LOUD and made it really difficult to have a conversation without being 6" away from whomever you're talking with.
I'm looking forward to going back, though! Â Score!
Ok seriously...this place is fantastic! Â The food, the beers, the atmosphere...amazing! Â We were there on Wednesday, which it turns out is trivia night - bonus!
We had the Spicy Bacon flatbread, the Melted Goat Cheese (goat cheese in a delicious marinara that you stir together).... Make sure to dip everything in that goat cheese dip!
We also had a cheese plate AND the chocolate bacon flatbread for dessert.
Tis is my new "go to" place when I am in town ...if I lived here, it would be my new "Cheers"!!
Why did I go to Bigby's? Â I'm not a craft beer snob or even a regular beer fan. Â And I live an hour away. Â But my beer snob friend kept insisting I go here.
I'll admit, I didn't try anything on tap because I don't know what to try. Â I had a pear cider, and damn it was good. Â I also tried the spicy bacon pizza and the muddy pig (chocolate and bacon flatbread). Â Both items were delicious, I would definitely order them again. Â Food costs about $10-12 here, and while the menu is limited, the options available are more than sufficient.
I was impressed by the beer list though. Â I may have only been able to identify names like "Emmet's" and "Goose Island," but with 10+ available, and a wall of bottled beers, you're just inconsolable if you can't find something to suit your tastes.
This is a small and unassuming bar on the west side of Lake Street. Â I don't know why I was expecting something big and classy looking. Â I love the interior of this place - it's a little bit "Cheers" and a little bit "Central Perk." Â There are plenty of tables, many of which were occupied on a Tuesday night, as well as a bar with seating and a few sofas. Â Sofas?! Â Hell yes! Â The decor is fun without being trite and cheesy, there's an aquarium alongside one table if you want to mellow out and watch the fish. Â There are also two TVs if you want to catch a game.
I wouldn't go with more than a group of 4-6 if you expect to get a table on a Friday or Saturday night. Â Table seating IS limited, and I'm guessing even more so on the weekends.
Cool variety of board games too, and there's a Wii. Â If your friends can't keep you occupied, then something else here certainly can.
Addison is lucky to have Bigby's as a neighborhood bar. Â But it's also well worth the trek from the southwest suburbs.
We met some friends here because it had good reviews, good craft beer, and sounded casual and fun (board games) - and we weren't disappointed.
It's in a very suburban area. The building is nondescript. There's an annoying open sign flashing in the window. I would have never seen it or stopped here if we hadn't already found it online. But once you enter the front door, it's actually a charming, quirky spot with shelves full of beer bottles, a piano man playing in the corner, board games filling shelves, and lots of little tables scattered around.
The staff was very nice and the beer selection was great, with lots of good craft beer including a good selection of midwestern and local beers. They also have a neat system where you can use little tokens to vote on which beers you want them to stock in the future. They also allow you to create your own beer flight if you aren't sure what you'd like.
I didn't order any food, but several people in my group did. One ordered a chorizo flatbread which he said was good but it looked like they had sprinkled 5 small bits of chorizo on it. I wouldn't have ordered it after seeing his. (more chorizo please!) Â I also tried a chocolate bacon flatbread, which I didn't think I'd like - but it was actually really tasty. The bacon was thin and crispy, adding a nice salty flavor to the chocolate.
This is a gem in the burbs for sure. Great beer selection, good wine selection, many small plates - they also do a tasting/flight menu of their beer and wine as well! The bar itself was cozy and nice - with eclectic tables and sofas. They even had live entertainment the night we were there - a piano man! Last, but not least, they also have lots of board games that you can play with your friends.
We will definitely be back. Check it out with your friends. It gets busy on the weekends, so go early.
At first glance, this place appears to be very unassuming. Â The front door is almost impossible to see from the road, and aside from the writing on the back of the building, you would never know it's there.
We met some college friends there for drinks and small plates a few days before Thanksgiving. Â It was busy from the time we got there around 8:30 until midnight when we left. Â Our group of 7 was able to snag a table, and it didn't look like too many people were left standing, but there also weren't many empty spots either. Â
We all ordered a number of beers and had a blast trying all of the varieties. Â Of course we had our favorites but with a rotating selection, I'd say choose your own adventure. Â We didn't sample any of the wine but the list was long and appeared promising. Â
We also had a few plates. Â My husband ordered a panini flatbread with chorizo. Â He said it was flavorful, but we did wish the panini had a little more chorizo. Â Overall though, the beer list is the highlight of this place and frankly, is all that it really needs to stay cute, comfortable, and warm. Â However, the chocolate bacon flatbread dessert was pretty sinful and yummy if you're feeling a little bit decadent. Â
At the end of the day, though, a place with a wall full of board games and beer to vote on ends up being a nice place to grab a drink with some friends!
Small suburban gem that has an amazing selection of craft beers and wine. Â The bar is actually a little hard to see off the main street (no big illuminated sign indicating the awesomeness that lies inside the bar). Â Once you get in, there are shelves with beer bottles showing what is on tap and available by the bottle - all craft beers.
The food is also awesome - I split two different flat breads with a dining mate and my biggest piece of advice is this: GET THE MUDDY PIG. Flatbread, nutella, crispy bacon, chocolate sauce, powdered sugar - need I say more?
The bartenders are friendly without being annoying, and have good beer suggestions. Â The atmosphere of the entire bar is relaxed and welcoming, and a bit quirky.
Definitely a great place to check out if you are in the area - and remember, GET THE MUDDY PIG. Â You'll thank me afterwards.
A tiny little bar that you'd easily miss on the side of the road unless you were looking for it, this was definitely a great Yelp find...
Ambience: Â The moment you walk in, you see a wall of beers on the left, and wall of wines on the right. Â These are for you, the customer! Â How it works is that you take the pebbles in front of you and drop them in the bottles to help them determine what to bring onto their menu... so whether it's something you want to try, or something you know you love... Bigby is trying to make it a place you would love to hang out in more. Â The decor is very laid back, and a perfect place for a 3rd date on, or to catch the game on one of their many TV's. Â Board games galore, some with "extra" instructions (have you ever played drinking Candyland?) , a cool place to hang out!
Drinks: Â Lots of choices in terms of beer and wine. Â Seriously, the selection is HUGE for such a small bar. Â Very cool.
Food: Â We focused on flatbreads and different pizzas, and they were all pretty tasty! Â The key ones that I would suggest are:
1. Â Spicy bacon pizza. Â Bacon of course, but the sriracha played nicely with the ingredients and surprisingly served as a great base! Â My wife doesn't like sriracha, and still loved this pizza. Â Worth trying!
2. Â Prosciutto asiago flat bread. Â It was quite tasty.
3. Â SAVE ROOM FOR DESSERT! Â The Muddy Pig is spectacular and worth saving room for... a flat bread with crisped bacon and chocolate sounds strange, but the sweet and salty combination is exquisite. Â I would go back, just for this dish. Â Seriously.
4. Â Hawaiian pizza: Â Strangely enough, they do something with the hawaiian pizza here that really makes it work... was it the beers I was drinking? Â I don't think so, but it may have been. Â
Verdict: Â Great atmosphere, great food, and more drinks than you can shake a stick at... I'm definitely a fan! Â Two things that will keep me coming back are the Muddy Pig and the Spicy Bacon Pizza.
Bar none, the best craft beer spot in the 'burbs. Â These people aren't pouring craft beer because it's the next big thing, or because it makes them money, or because craft beer drinkers are infinitely cooler than winos (which we are). Â It's because they love craft beer, and anyone else who does should go here.
It has an awesome, casual, vintage feel without feeling like an antique store. Â Lots of comfortable couches and chairs, plenty of tables (large and small), and plenty of barside seating. Â The beer selection is totally top notch, both on draft and in bottles. Â They have exclusive beer from Two Bros. as well as almost any Midwest brew you're looking for.
The staff is super knowledgeable and just as friendly, keeping the brews coming even when it's packed. Â The food is perfect bar fare, small plates and flatbreads that are delicious. Â If I were to open a craft beer bar, it would look, feel, and taste just like Bigby's.
What to say about Bigby's...
Amazing Service
Amazing Selection
and
Amazing Crowd
The main reason I went out that far is because "Yelp's on Tap!" had it listed. Normally I don't take a long drive 40+ miles to grab a beer or 3 but, this place got so many rave reviews that I had to check it out.
The place has a nice "Home Bar" feel, and you can immediately spot the lucky people that are considered Regulars. Everyone is very friendly and quick to chat you up. The bartenders are knowledgeable on each local brew which changes weekly. I must say, I'm a fan of the IPA selections.
I ordered the Hawaiian Pizza - it was amazing! The ham to pineapple ratio was perfect. The crust was very flavorful and had a phenomenal crunch and texture. I asked for a to-go box, barely used it though. It was THAT good. I really should have gotten a second pizza to-go.
The patio area is where we smokers have refuge, it's well lit, has nice clean outdoor tables. If you let the bar tender know you plan on sitting outside they WILL come out and check on you, you're not forgotten or ignored.
In the corner I spied board games like Jenga and what I thought was Pictionary. I'm sure if it wasn't Trivia Night (Wednesday) those would have been used to their full potential and fun would be had by all!
I had 3 beers, and a pizza total bill was just over $25 - not bad at all!
I will definitely be going back to Bigby's
How have I not reviewed Bigby's yet!? Bigby's is a favorite of many of us Yelpers. A coworker was looking for somewhere with craft beers to go so I suggested she go to the tried and true favorite.
Before going solo, she decided to invite a couple of us for drinks after work on Friday. Upon arrival, I was happy to see a mixed crowd age-wise because I didn't want my coworkers to feel out of place or uncomfortable. I was surprised it was completely packed to the brim on a Friday at 5! I couldn't snag a spot in the parking lot and had to park across the street. We were able to get the last table in the place. My coworkers were a bit confused by the no menu concept but they quickly got the hang of things. You select your drink from either the chalkboards on the walls or by looking at what is offered in the front.
They had Dragon's Milk which is a Sarah favorite...I love my beer served in a goblet, it makes me feel classy and regal. I was sad that they ran out of 5 Rabbit right as I was ordering it. Curse you, whoever took that last bottle!
The Muddy Pig is the bomb dot com. I've had it before and surprised my friends by ordering it on Friday. They were confused by the whole concept of bacon on your chocolatey yum, but they each gobbled up a couple of pieces so I think they were pleasantly surprised.
It was so busy on this last visit that I couldn't even get to the board games! But they do have some fun games to play. Good company + Bacon, Chocolate and Craft beers + a chill relaxed environment = a great Friday night.
Without question among the best bars I've been to. I always appreciate a place that makes its focus on craft beers, because there's a wealth of amazing beer out there, and it's nice to see more and more places offering these beers on tap.
With that, of course, you need a bartender who is knowledgeable, and at Bigby's that's absolutely the case, he knows his stuff.
So don't let the outside fool you, because it's deceptively plain, and make sure to stop in for some drinks. I wish I lived a little closer to Addison, because I'd be at Bigby's much more often.
A very nice place. Â A comfortable bar and clubhouse type place located in the suburbs of Chicago. Â It is nice to see that the craft beer scene is spreading all over the country, or shall I say, has spread around the country.
I sat with a buddy and played backgammon for a couple of hours. Â I drank a few really nice beers I have yet to try. Â They carried a Stone Please Enjoy before 9-21-12 or something like that..
I was kind of surprised at how they give small pours on the stronger percentage beers. I guess since it is the suburbs, there has to be some consideration for drunk drivers. Â I think it was an 8 ounce pour. Â
My only complaint about this place is there lack of selection for people who do not drink craft beers. Â Not even selection but, consideration. Â I came with my friend who does not like craft beers. Â I understand, it's like a vegetarian complaining about a steakhouse.. But, there should at least be some knowledge on the staffs end on how to deal with these customers.
My friend was there for me, he specifically said, I only like lite beers, what do you have that is similar to a Bud Lite or Miller Lite. Our waitress was like, oh yeh, i have the perfect beer. She then came over with this dark warm stout beer. I am thinking, this is perhaps the exact opposite of a Bud Lite. Â
It was strange. Â I am sure this is not the first time someone said, "what is similar to bud lite." Â Just train your staff to have a response ready for someone who is asking a question. Â Who knows, perhaps that may have been a baby step towards having another fan of craft beer.. Though, after that crappy experience, i doubt they will ever deviate from their Bud Lite now.
Since moving to Austin, I've been back to Chicago twice in 8 months and both visits have included a 25-mile trek to Bigby's.
I don't like driving long distances when there's bars aplenty near my crash pad in the city (thank you, Brett D). But, I like Bigby's so much - no, love - that I'm willing to plunk down tolls, deal with neverending interstate traffic and trade my usual three beers for just one in the name of drinking responsibly.
Love, right? YES.
And now I have even more reason to love Bigby's - though craft beer vs. craft food has always been their deliberate focus, they now offer Belgian-style mussels (replete with an Allagash White broth and shallots) and a chili kissed by Young's Double Chocolate Stout on Sundays.
See you next time, boys! You have a friend for life.
I really need to come here more often.
Bigby's is not quite as close as it used to be, but it's completely worth the longer drive (just make sure your driver is sober, please!).
I came back recently for an unofficial yelp gathering and was pleasantly astonished when Ed, the awesomesauce owner, knew my name. It was my third visit. In two-plus years. Apparently, saying nice things about a fantastic bar is a good way to be remembered.
On this particular visit, I quaffed two beers I had never tried before (the super-light Two Brothers Pahoehoe* and the super-dark Three Floyds Moloko), noshed on some pizzas (thanks for sharing, ladies!) and had great conversation and a great time. Ed and his staff are all over the service, remembering what you're drinking, bringing water and tasty food to keep you from falling on the floor in a craft-beer-induced blissful coma.
*Pronounced pa-hoy-hoy, not pa-ho-ho. A delightful, mildly coconutty beer named after a type of lava found at Kilauea.
I am so glad that I finally got to try Bigby's. They have a bazillion glowing reviews and I'm always hearing fellow yelpers talk about Bigby's. I live fairly close so it's a mystery why I haven't been here sooner.
We arrived before any crowds on a Saturday night and we were promptly asked (by the owner I'm guessing) if we've ever been. Once he found out we were newbies, he explained the craft beer voting process and their current selections. He also pointed out the beers on tap and wine menu. There are TONS of drinks to choose from. They also have a small selection of flat breads, pizza, cheese platters and desserts as well. We were with a group so we ended up ordering a few pizzas, mainly the Bigby's Hawaiian which did not disappoint. For dessert, we tried the Smores Pizza since I heard so much about it on here. It didn't disappoint either, definitely would order again. The prices are pretty reasonable and they also offer a beer or wine flight for a pretty good bargain.
The place overall has a really cool, cozy vibe. The area itself isn't that large but it never got overly crowded. There is an outdoor seating area as well, weather permitting. They have tons of board games to choose from and I also spied an original Nintendo remote control hanging from the projection screen which leads me to believe you can play a mean game of Mario sometime....maybe only during the week?
I've heard that they also host trivia nights and I definitely would be interested in that...just need to find out when.
We had a great time at Bigby's. The drinks were flowing, the prices were right, service was great and the atmosphere was inviting.
I've been putting off my review of Bigby's Pour House simply because "outstanding" and "delicious" only have so many synonyms. Gushing aside, I came here based on the stellar reviews of my fellow Yelpers, who never lead me astray. Needless to say, they nailed it.
Bigby's, in my opinion, is the quintessential "beer-lovers" bar. The staff of four is extremely knowledgeable and make outstanding recommendations. Functioning as "beer sommeliers," the staff has introduced me to a number of great breweries that I likely would not have found on my own. Their tap selection changes almost daily with an impressive variety of craft beers, and they also maintain a vast array of bottled beer to supplement their daily drafts.
Their tapas menu is somewhat limited, but the food is delicious! I am a man of simple tastes; beer and pizza being one of them. The spicy bacon pizza paired with a cold Oberon or Prairie Path is outstanding and makes for a perfect, lazy summer afternoon with friends. The pizzas themselves are thin crust and a good size for 2-3 individuals.
I will definitely be returning to Bigby's in the future.
Dearest Bigby's,
I must sincerely apologize for taking so long to find you. Where have you been all my life? You have that something special that makes my husband happy (friggin' amazing beer) and that je ne sais quoi that makes my heart go thump, thump, thump (i.e. wine - and that occasional Belgium beer). Please save me a seat next week.
Love your newest fan,
Little ol' wine drinker me
P.S. The bacon pizza sealed the deal with my husband.
This write-up marks my 500'th review on Yelp.
After many long and unintentional delays, I finally made it to Bibgy's, a Yelp institution for a reason! Thanks Jelena for the invite and excuse to break away from work.
Upon Ed's recommendation, I had both the Redbird and Sapient Trip. Both were excellent and if you haven't become a fan of craft beer yet, those are two fine examples of why you might be shortly after visiting this outpost of brewed goodness.
Our conversation lasted a while, such that I forgot to try anything from the kitchen, but there's always next time. Thanks Ed, Mike and company for such an enjoyable evening. When I'm back in the area and need refreshment, I'll be happy to help you tap the next keg.
Bottoms up!
Beer snobbery without the snobbery. If I had to sum Bigby's up in a sentence, that would be it.
It was a Saturday night and there were only 2 people serving the busy bar and floor but they were quick and efficient and very friendly. Both gave great suggestions and I ended up ordering a beer flight while my wife chose the wine flight. The list of beers are staggering and I simply told the bartender I was overwhelmed and would like him to choose for me after telling him my preferences. Same for my wife. We were both happy with the variety we received as well as portion.
They only have craft beer and wine so if you're looking for cheap PBR beer specials then don't bother. If you didn't know so many beers existed outside of the MIller/Anheuser Busch world and are willing to try beer that actually tastes like something then this is the spot to get your taste on. The bartender is extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Just give him a vague idea of what you like and he can whip up a sample that is sure to please you with variety within your preferences.
After 15 minutes of sipping, we worked up the munchies so they suggested we try the melted goat cheese as a tasty nibbler that is easily shared. Melted goat cheese in marinara sauce served with bite sized wedges of toasted, seasoned pita bread sent us both to taste bud heaven. It really was the perfect combination with our drinks. I knew it was good when we finished the dish and I wanted to order another one.
Don't you hate places that play obnoxiously loud music so that you have to scream at people just to be heard? Me too and Bigby's does a fine job of keeping the volume to the perfect level so that you can still hear it above the din but it's not intrusive. Lighting is slightly dim and comfortable seating, such as couches, are available for a perfect evening of kicking back and enjoying life without some straight billed hat and Affliction shirt wearing d-bag screaming jager bombs next to you. People here are mature but not necessarily old. Just plain comfortable is the best way to explain the ambiance here.
Thanks to Cristie B. and Jelena Z. for the reviews that led me to this great find! I'll be making a trip back here as often as possible.
