My wife and some friends decided to have dinner together with the hubbies. We all live somewhat spread around the bay area and Black Angus in Vallejo was a central point for all of us so we met there. Â I had never been to a BA before but I figured it would be similar to Outback, which is one of the few chain restaurants that I actually enjoy going to. Boy, was I wrong. First of all, it was 98 degrees outside and the A/C was broken in the bar area which is where they tried to seat us. When we told them that we wanted to sit in the regular dining room (with working A/C) we were told that they were going be too full with folks with reservations (we did not have one). So, we said thanks but we were going over to the Olive Garden and the waitress said she would double check and guess what? They found a table for us in the main dining room. We were there for two hours and the five tables nearest us were never seated. The room was half empty the whole time! Â So much for all the folks coming that had reservations.
I brought my own wine and their corkage fee of $8 is fair so that was alright. Â I ordered the Filet Mignon and Lobster tail. Â Now, I know that the "sea food" in a steak house is often times so-so. Â I knew it was going to be a frozen lobster tail, but that would be OK. Frozen lobster tails, properly prepared can be delicious.
My 6 ounce filet was cooked properly (rare) but was severely under seasoned. Â It was not a tasty piece of meat at all. Â The lobster tail was WAY overcooked. The top surface was dried out like it had been under a heat lamp for hours if not days. Â The interior of the lobster was also pretty dry. Â Dipping in the clarified butter was a must to get enough moisture to chew and swallow without having to wash it down with water.
The garlic mashed potatoes were OK but drier than I would normally prepare. Â The fresh green beans with bacon were actually pretty good and well prepared.
All four items were kind of scattered on the plate somewhat haphazardly. I give them a C- for  presentation.
The price for this mediocre meal?  $31.  There are a number of fine dining restaurants in my home town of Santa Rosa where $31 would buy me a VERY fine entrée.  As far as I am concerned, the BA offering was abysmal for that price.
I was not alone. Â One of the other husbands ordered the Prime Rib and what arrived on his plate was the most pathetic slice of Prime Rib I have ever seen.
If you want a good steak and need to pick from the chains, go for Outback. Â I see no reason for me to ever visit a Black Angus again.
Well I haven't been here in years so I was looking forward to a great dinner. Well the dinner was okay but my appetizer was horrible! Â I order the fire grilled artichokes and once I got two the second leaf I noticed a green worm on the leaf! So of course I lost my appetite and dinner was a wrap! The manager apologized blaming his produce company but still I was done with the Black Angus experience.
Review Source:The greeter was very pleasant. Â We were seated immediately, but the service ended at that point. Â At first it seemed as though there was only one server for the entire restaurant . Â Eventually she mentioned that one of two other servers would come to assist us. Â Our server seemed to be more interested in her conversations than with providing good service. Â My husband ordered a salad but did not receive his salad dressing. After receiving his steak and asking for steak sauce, I finally went to the server's stand to get it myself. Â The food was not bad, but not particularly Â
good either. Â All in all, there was nothing about this experience warrants a return trip
My grandparents love this place. I have been to Black Angus for every single birthday for every single member of my family for over 6 years. That's a lot of the same food, but I've seen the food get better over the years and the customer service going from nonexistent to considerate to shaky to moderately decent.
The food is relatively decent. I've been to better steakhouses, but by no means is this not good food. It all depends on what you get. My family and I love their cheddar potato soup and we always get appetizers. Everything is cooked to perfection.
I've never had a problem with ordering meat there because I stick to the gigantic plate of Cobb Salad and it's like the king of all Cobb salads. My grandma has had issues with them cooking her steaks correctly, she prefers extremely well done and they usually give her medium rare. That's the only problem we've ever encountered in the six years we've been blowing up this location.
I think my favorite part is when they bring you a gigantic skillet-baked cookie with french vanilla ice cream on top and everyone comes around and sings Happy Birthday. Granted, they're not like professional singers, but it really brings something to the birthday celebration. Usually it's an element of surprise and "Oh shit, this is so embarrassing."
We tend to go during non-peaks hours and because my grandparents eat dinner at 3pm, that's what time we venture over here.
One thing that struck a chord with me in terms of their customer service was how thoughtful, friendly and accommodating they were to my grandpa who has Alzheimer's. It's obvious when you talk with him that something is off, but they graciously showed him the bathroom and waited for him when he came out to show him back to his seat. It was such a kind gesture and you genuinely don't see that anywhere else.
Here goes...
My boyfriend and I wanted to get out of the house for the night so we decided to head to Black Angus to watch Monday night football and have dinner and drinks. This isn't the first time we've eaten here, and even then the service was eh, not so great..This time I have had enough. Â We sit in our usual seat at the high table in the bar area and order beer and dinner. The food takes forever to come out, and the waitress certainly doesn't know how to balance her tables. She rarely checked on us, we had to reach over to a separate table for steak sauce because she'd been gone for 15 minutes.. This isn't even the half of it. My aunt and her fiance' walk in and sit next to us in a separate table. Â They sat there with no one to greet them, take their order or even ask if they want something to drink. Finally after 15 minutes, (and no I'm not exaggerating) 15 MIN! her fiance gets up and walks to the bar. He shouldn't have to do that!! I call a random server over and say, "this is absolutely ridiculous! They've been sitting here for 15 min with no one helping them! Once that problem was resolved things seemed to calm down.
Back at my table, I got a little full off beer and decide to order something else. As I look to my left on my neighbors table, I see cute yellow sparkles on the rim of this martini glass. Yep, Lemon drop is what I want :)
However, a Lemon Drop is NOT what I got. Hands down thee most disgusting Lemon Drop I have ever had is what was brought to my table!! I'm pretty sure lemon drops dont have TEQUILA!!! Grossed out, I decide not to say anything about the awful drink because I feel bad sending things back. Â The waitress notices I've barely touched the drink and asks if there is a problem.. I say well whoever made the drink put tequila in it. She says "Impossible, I made that drink and I did NOT use tequila." I said ok but im telling you everyone around me has tasted this drink and it most definitely tastes like tequila. It should be vodka.
You can see where this is going.. to end this on a decent note, she attempted to fix the nasty drink, brought it back and it tasted 10x's worse. This time it tasted like I was on a girls trip to cabo trying to get wasted with tequila shots. Â She said she wouldnt leave until I said it tasted better. I said no, its worse. She said its her "freshly squeezed lime juice and lemons" Give me a break. You took the 1800 bottle of tequila and poured it into my drink. Maybe you got that mixed up with vodka..l. But I've had enough with this place. I choked down the drink and got the bill and left.
Pretty sure I wont return until the service is better and the bartender is actually a bartender. Not a waitress.
The place is nice and clean but thats as far as I go..We ordered a beer and both drafts we got were not that cold (two different drafts) so we asked them to check and they said it was fine, 42 degrees then the food came and the chicken was way over cooked and my buddies was as well. Â Overall it was a miserable experience due to our expecatations from past experiences but this time was pathetic! Â The ghetto Black Angus! Â I will say the waitress and manager went overboard to be nice and helpful and we appreciated that and didn't pay for the food (which we didn't eat) but the place needs some serious overhauling of the staff that cook etc..The Olive Garden next door was standing room only..This place is just not the same..
Review Source:This was my first time visiting a Black Angus in years (mostly because I am not a huge meat eater).
We had close to no wait - always a plus. Our waitress Sheryl was great. She was personable, friendly, our drinks were always kept full and she continuously brought us fresh bread. She is a definite asset to Black Angus.
Our food arrived to us hot and promptly. I split the "Cobb Salad" which was huge, delicious and fresh and indulged in a "Loaded baked potato". The potato was good - not great. I was pleased that it was cooked thoroughly as I have received partially cooked baked potatoes in the past (from other restaurants) but I didn't feel like the potato really lived up to the name of being "loaded". In fact it was sort of dry, which was a little disappointing.
My brother had the prime 3/4 lb prime steak (med-well). He said that his steak was good but not great. His primary complaint was that it "wasn't the best cut of meat" and that it was very fatty and chewy. Â Coincidentally he had a steak the other night at the Black Bear Diner which he said was exceptionally good. I didn't try the steak myself but thought I would mention his responses.
We also split the warm cookie and ice cream dessert which was very rich and super yummy.
I have not been here for a loooong time. I lived in Vallejo for over a decade and I can honestly say that I have been here once, not including my visit many weeks ago. Came here with my family and have to say that the restaurant is quite large, as we were seated in the bar area, but there was also the main dining room as well.
The food here is definitely just a-okay. I mean its a chain restaurant centered around serving prime rib and other carnivorous items to the masses. However, since most restaurants are now announcing how much calories are in their dishes, it is harder to be excited AND enjoy the food knowing you are about to eat your daily intake.
My boyfriend and I shared the 8 oz filet mignon with veggies and wild rice. The expression on my boyfriend's face was priceless as he realized that an 8 oz steak is not much to look at, especially if you're sharing and hungry. However, the cut was not bad at all. Sure I didn't get a crazy amount of meat, but it wasn't a run out the door type of experience. I guess I am pretty numb to places like Black Angus.
Would I come back? Not quite sure. I went because I was with my family and were trying to have a Wednesday night dinner. That is all.
Last night I had a really great dining experience here.
To my shock, we were greeted by the hostess (who even smiled!) when we walked in. She sat us immediately.
Luisa (sp?) was our server. She was on top of it AND she was really friendly. I felt very taken care of. I love when servers are real people and not like robots reciting the same phrases throughout the meal.
Food was chain restaurant food, which is always a hit or miss. And you know what, It came out just fine. It was exactly how I ordered it. I had no grand expectations and I have no complaints.
The manager walked around and genuinely asked us how our food was.
We when left the hostess and manager were up at the front and thanked us for coming in and told us to have a good night. Very normal procedure for a restaurant but this has never happened once before in the handful of times I've gone in.
Maybe it's new management? I don't know. I feel like it's changed a lot. I'm very happy that I can share a good experience about this Black Angus location.
Not bad for a chain steakhouse. Â You can't beat the price of $40 for a campfire feast or two. Â We shared the sampler, I got a 12 oz rib eye, he got a 12 oz prime rib, each got a salad, sweet potatoe fries and a heaping slice of chocolate cake w/a scoop of vanilla bean. Â
No complaints here!
I've only been to Black Angus Steakhouse once and it was this place in Vallejo. I don't remember too much of the food because we had great company which masked the taste bud memory. Of course, when you go to any specialty restaurants you should order their specialty. Vaguely remembering their steak came out a bit bloodier than I would have liked it to be for being "well done". I would go back and give them another try... this time I'll have them butterfly my steak.
Review Source:One word - empty. Â This restaurant didn't have a lot of buzz about it when I visited but I've heard decent things about this local chain. Â The steak has to be there claim to fame but honestly it's nothing to write home about. The New York stripped was cooked as I wanted but loaded with fat everywhere instead of the usual fat cap along the edge. Â The A-1 really helped when it came to flavor though - thank for that added addition. Â
The staff was courteous as ever and even provided a free dessert for my birthday dinner. Â I wouldn't say this will become my every day stomping grounds whenever I visit Vallejo, but I wouldn't be opposed to going back. Â Especially when my taste-buds are nearly gone at an older age. Â Until then...
I wish i could give Negative 5 Stars!
Food: hard and Nasty!
Service: The waitress overcharged me and my fiance by $20! Where they do that at! We didn't even feel comfortable giving her our credit card to charge our meal. We ended up going to the front counter to pay for our dinner. Thumbs Wayyy down!
Thanks Black angus of Vallejo for ruining our only dinner night for the month..
The steak is okay, I've had better. The fried zucchini and the potato skins were better than my main course, I'd have to say.
My bf ordered a well done steak and he got a rare one. How do you mix that up? I don't know, but we had it sent back and he had to wait an extra 15-20 minutes for it to come back out. The rest of our party was almost done eating by that time.
Not sure how often I'd come back here, I suppose if i was too lazy to cook my own steak or if there were no other steakhouses in the area. I'd go back for the appetizers and to try their dessert and skip the steak.
At least the waitress was nice...
I can't believe I'm going to do this...
I'm giving Black Angus in Vallejo FIVE stars...
Wow.
Why?
My meal was perfect.
I started with the grilled artichoke and it was cooked perfectly. It came with three medium-sized artichoke halves and two mayonnaise based dipping sauce. I didn't care for one of the sauces, but the one with basil was fantastic. We got there at happy hour, so instead of paying about $9 for this appetizer, I got it for $5. Score!
I also got the wedge salad. It was a nice large quarter of iceberg lettuce, topped with blue cheese crumbles, bacon, tomato and blue cheese dressing. Perfect.
For my main course I had the 6 oz. sauteed mushroom and blue cheese crumble fillet mignon. I asked for the steak to be prepared medium rare and when it arrived, it was just that. The meat was so tender I could have cut it with a butter knife. One of the best steaks I have had in the last 10 years (and I am known for getting steak with mostly gristle and fat). I also got the green beans sauteed with bacon. The green beans were al dente and had just the right amount of bacon (it wasn't too oily) and it went perfectly with the steak.
Everything was perfect and this is RARE for me.
We sat in the bar (although it was super loud because of the sports program on the tv's) and played poker with others in the restaurant on our iphones (shown on one of the flat screen tv's). That made time go by so fast. The service was really friendly (from the host, to the server, to the bus boy) and our drinks were constantly refilled. The host even gave us a coupon for a free appetizer on our next visit. Nice!
I will definitely go back to this restaurant and think that I now actually prefer it to the Pleasant Hill location.
I just hope that my next meal there is just as good.
Ps. Free wi-fi in the bar!
I didn't go here for years, and I now after going last night, I remember why...
My grandmother and I ordered at the same time as a party of four. The server had messed up my order and got me a filet mignon instead of a prime rib. I got my meal after the party of four already paid and left the restaurant. My grandmother had finished eating. She forgot to get me any bread in the meantime so that I can eat something. The food temperature isn't hot either. The manager offered to give me a free dessert...My grandmother is diabetic, and I don't eat sugar. Why would you do that if you had already spent an hour waiting for your food? (I'm not exaggerating. We got there at 6:30 and left at 8:30...DO NOT GO HERE.
I was on the fence between 4 & 5 stars. I hadn't been here in a really, really long time and I have to admit, when I seen the price increase I was a bit taken by it. I mean, it wasn't an increase by a little....
On the other hand, the food was amazing and I can confidently say that last night we had the best service EVER! THANK YOU LUCIA!!! I would ask for her every time! We got in at 6pm with only a 5 minute wait on a Sunday evening. I was good with that.
I've never had problems here and will continue to go and to recommend to my friends!
We haven't been here in a long while and from the last time I was here it sure was a different experience. We got seated immediately right after we walked in.
Once seated, we got our nice and warm Bavarian bread with butter served. I started off with their signature specialty draught beer Black & Tan (Guinness Stout and Bass Ale). This mix quenched my thirst with a smile. I got the 16oz Ribeye Steak medium-rare along with Wild West Onion Rings and Western Wild Rice for the sidekicks.
My steak was perfectly done and delicious. Our server Terri was super! She reminded us of what true customer service was all about...
I'm sorry... The only thing I enjoyed was the complimentary Sweet Molasses Bread and the Potato Skins (which were greasy from cheese and baco). Our waiter was flitting around a lot at first and once we had our meals he disappeared... The steak wasn't great, The  garlic mash was ok, same with steamed broccoli. And the shrimp which were breaded, bleh! Either the oil they're using to fry them isn't hot enough or these are just plain gross. Mom said "here just take off the breading :)" She's so cute
And then I had to use the bathroom :( Dun, Dun, Dun!!! All I'm going to say is, did they not have room in the budget to keep them at least presentable and operating?? I'll let the pictures I added say the rest for me.
I used to work here. They do have a clean cooking area and truly serve top of the line prime-rib and salmon. The other meats are just decent quality.
Don't eat the salads, vegetables, or potato soup, just not fresh enough to validate paying for it.
If your into prime-rib or salmon come in at a non-rush time. Otherwise you will wait way to long for a meal.
The service is 5-star, and if there is a problem management will be more than happy to take care of.
This is the kind of place you don't make a special trip for, but worth a stop if you are in the area already and during a slow time.
Not as bad as Red Lobster, but it is still fast food with a high price tag. Came here for a party with some locals who consider this place fine dining for Vallejo. Tried to take the safe road and get a chick sandwich with the sauces on the side. Everyone else went with the couples special for $50.
My chicken along with everyone elses was dry, sweetened with some maple-ish flavoring and not so appetizing. Word is the steaks were tough and salty. The sides were insulting. My sandwich came with the smallest order of fries I have ever seen come with a sandwich, let alone, a $13 dollar one and the sides that came on the other plates were equally ridic. 2 onion rings and a few pieces of cheesy limp broccoli that was probably died bright green because if you cook any green long enough to make it that limp, it fades in color.
Dessert came and I watched these people rave over the cookie ice cream thingy, but most of the ones who ate any of that were complaining of stomach cramps or making a dash to the toilet shortly after. Learn to cook and have a much better/cheaper version of this food at home or find another spot to get a steak.
2 stars because the wait staff was nice and the bar did okay with the drinks. 0 stars for the food.
Go for the projectile vomiting and diarrhea. Generally speaking there is usually only circumstantial evidence for food poisoning at a restaurant that serves tainted food. However, when you enter the bowels of the very large corporate feeding barn known as Black Angus, you expect that you will be served tender juicy beef for prices between $20-$30 and not fat enhanced shoe leather that has to be returned and then listen to a lecture by the manager that Black Angus is known for its prime rib.
I was smart and declined a new meal (free or not) but another member of our party got very sick that night after eating only at Black Angus. Was it the salad?
Black Angus is one of those places where I know it exists, but I'm not inclined to go there. Â The only reason I've recently gone to Black Angus was that my dad had a $50 gift card from my auntie, and he's had that gift card for about a year and a half. Â
Not don't get me wrong, the ambiance was nice and very Western-y. Â Our waiter was very attentive and courteous. Â The service overall was good. Â However, the food...I was not impressed. Â It does taste pretty good, but I could have cooked everything I ate that night at home, and it would've been cheaper and either of the same quality or slightly better. Â Probably the only thing that impressed me a bit was the chocolate cake, but this is a steak house not a dessert place. Â It has been years since my last visit, and it's going be years again till I return to Black Angus, and that's if Black Angus is still in existence.
I love Black Angus. Â I must admit that we go there a little bit too much...but we usually only go when they have good coupons on the campfire dinner for two. Â What a good deal: an appetizer, 2 meals of your choice and you pick the sides too, and a dessert to share, one of the best deals in town! Â
We always get the fried zuchinni for the appetizer because they are delicious!!! Â
Good items: Â Garden salad with ranch, garlic mashed potatoes, creamed spinach, rib eye steak, prime rib, grilled salmon, grilled rosemary chicken (very tasty!) , mac and cheese (side dish, not the kids meal) and mixed veggies. Â
Plus the bread they give you is sooooo good, I wish I could make it at home. Â So much food, you will have lots of left overs.
The desserts are soooo yummy and huge portions. Â We used to always get the Sky-high mud pie but recently we had a birthday there and they gave us a free Chocolate chip Silver Dollar cookie...OMG...heaven! Â This is our new favorite treat. Â Just add a cup of coffee and you are set!
My only issue with them is that it can get very crowded on weekends and they sometimes change items that I like on the menu, but other than that, I love it!
They have a whole new take on steak!
Ok, I've had horrible food and service there a few years ago. We're talking horrible service, over priced food...really abysmal dining experience. So you can imagine the moans and groans from the family when I announced my steak craving Friday night and suggested we try them again. Everything has been redone inside from the decor to the menu to the serving staff. We waited maybe 10 minutes at 6 pm on Friday night. Our server was incredible, he was lightening fast , accurate, and took the time to make my kids smile. The food was very tasty, perfectly cooked and presented nicely. All in all a great experience and they've won my families business back! Great job Black Angus staff!
This must be the week for raising stars!
Carnivore cravings called for steak tonight. Â Our server was named "Sarah Smile" and she was the best. Â Very attentive and timed our order quite nicely.
I like my steak medium rare and I dont know about you but it is hard to get compliance! Â They did it tonight and they did it good. Â I mean it is no Cattlemans but it did the trick!!
It's not worthy anymore.
A few years ago I would have said BA was a good place to eat, even if a bit pricey. Â Tonite it was just plain horrible. Â I ordered the ribeye for $22 and the presentation was just abysmal. Â It looked like someone slopped the slab of meat onto the plate and gave me a handful of fries. Â The plate was dirty and you could see where they tried to wipe it clean with a dirty rag. Â The cut of meat wasn't spectacular by any means, lots of fat. Â The only good thing is it was cooked properly.
My wife had a pomegranet martini and said it was tasteless. Â Her plate also looked like it was just slapped together. Â When they brought the plates we had to ask for ketchup and steak sauce. Â Took 2 separate trips to get them. Â
The wait staff didn't seem to care that patrons were eating. Â They were laughing and having a good time and talking about their personal lives right in front of everyone. Â Honestly, I don't care what you did last night.
The manager came by and tried to make it right by offering a free dessert. Â Um, no thanks, not interested. Â Instead he gave us a coupon for a free appetizer on our next visit. Â We left it because we won't be going back.
We came to the BA very, very hungry. Â When we ordered our entrees, Stephani, our waitress, told us that we could get the same thing -- prime rib and filet mignon -- for almost the same price with a free appetizer and dessert if we ordered the combo. Â So we did. Â We appreciate the hint.
The service was really good. Â Multiple refills of our drinks, clearing away of useless (and empty) dishes at appropriate moments, checking in on us from time to time.
The prime rib was very good, a little thin but tasty. The filet mignon was reportedly cooked correctly and excellent. Â If I have criticism at all, it's that the appetizer sampler wasn't all that appealing (potato skins, buffalo wings, scampi). Â But there was certainly enough food. Â And, as I said, service was excellent.
This place is the sheeeiitt when it comes to late night cravings for creme brulee!
My roommate and I came one night after having dinner at home. Â We realized we had absolutely nothing desert-ish in our house! Â Thats right...not even chocolate. Â We were watching "My Best Friends Wedding" and all of a sudden that scene comes up where Julia Roberts is trying to explain to Cameron Diaz that she's creme brulee and her soon to be husband isnt looking from creme brulee. Â He's looking for JELLO. Â (note: i love that movie!)
So this is what started our night time outing to Black Angus. Â It was the only restaurant close to where we lived that serves creme brulee! (and no...there is no JELLO, yuck!) Â When we got there the waiter asked us if we wanted drinks...(long pause)...sure WHY NOT!...its only a Tuesday. Â So in going with the fancy creme brulee I decided to have some champagne! Â We got a good buzz and fulfilled our desert craving. The end
yeah yeah i know...its black angus...but hey...i dont live in the city, so i gotta work with what i got. =P
Don't get me wrong, I love me some Black Angus steak (Milpitas location RULES!); but I will never - ever - eat at this location again. We came for dinner, about seven of us. We were shuffled around (twice) because they needed to make room for another party that was bigger than ours. Okay, no big deal. As we were there to celebrate, we figured we'd just enjoy the evening, shuffling and all.
We were enjoying our soups and salads when I looked down at the table and saw something wriggling. Okay, maybe writhing is a better word. It was a maggot, that had made its way out of our friends salad and onto the table. Yes, there were more in his plate. No, I did not take a picture to post on Yelp, but I wish I did!
We alerted our server and instead of apologizing, she said --wait for it -- "Well, that sometimes happens when you serve fresh salads"....WTF? And here's the kicker - after the maggot incident, we were asked to move tables AGAIN, and we had to move our own cups/plates! There was no apology, no mention of comping our meal, nothing. Until I demanded the manager and explained how I was not going to tolerate this level of service. Our whole dinner was comped, we got a $50 giftcard and sincere apologies from the manager.
Management was nice, but the rest of the experience was horrible. Food was subpar.
One inedible star.
I pretended I was a senior citizen with orthopedic shoes, wearing a mumu dress, control top pantyhose that I bought at Kmart to hide my spider varicose bright blue and purple viens, a gold wedding ring from the marraige with my now dead husband that barely fits on my finger because I am retaining so much fucking water that my whole body looks swollen and my ankles are so fat that they ooze out of my shoes. Â I am 50 lbs overweight and my diabetes and blood pressure are out of hand and I haven't walked further then 50 feet in the past ten years.
Oh yeah...and I have a walker that I use old cut tennis balls on the feet because I cannot pick it up, instead I push it along.
This place is prime example of why people are unheatlhy and obese...too much high fat, high carb food and veggies that have had all the nutrional value steamed out of it.
SQUARE COW...why should I pay your over the top prices to fix a meal that is WAY loaded with sodium and artery clogging comfort food?
I can make my own delectable artery clogger meal at home -- which is what I recommend.
but somehow, for some reason, there is ALWAYS a crowd at this location and a LONG wait for a table...go figure
sorry, but your just not my kind of steakhouse...
