We loved this hole in the wall! Â Super friendly service from a woman I presumed was Bobbie. Â She brought my toddler extra rice and gravy and wasn't fazed by the resulting mess. Â The loco moco was nicely seasoned. Â Da Gravy Box #5 was a heart attack in styrofoam - in a good way. Â I wanted to try the Korean fried chicken so she subbed that and man, it was tasty. Â Everything else was good, albeit drowned in da gravy so I can't quite remember what it was... a bunch of pork, I think. Â Mac salad wasn't the best I've had but really, who cares when you have Da Gravy Box?
Review Source:This place is recommended in the lonely planet. The staff were super friendly, the food was better than I though. It's more of a fast food joint and ok... it's not really healthy food but if you were going to eat some unhealthy, you might as well try it if you are in the area. Tip: we actually split a plate for two people and it ended up being a pretty filling lunch for $10.
Review Source:This place might not be for everyone or for every mood...but...if you want good, cheap, fast, and greasy at a simple place with a friendly owner, look no further.
Loved the Korean chicken!! The teriyaki chicken burger was also good!
May not be the best place for vegan/vegetarians, but for me and my husband, this place was great!
Note about the locations: when we looked for it, google/bing maps had us on the wrong part of Hanapepe road. Don't give up. Give them a call if you need directions.
Left Poipu and after all the reviews I had to go and try the Korean Chicken. Â At first little surprised that the pieces were so small. Â They were loaded with plenty of flavor and nicely cooked. Â Had 2 pieces of shrimp tempura and those were ok. Â Nice little place in the middle of no where. Â Small little community. Â Reminded me of Molokai. Â I come from San Francisco but lived in Hawaii for the past 18 years. Â Will have to come back and try some of the other plates.
Review Source:We dinned here during the Friday night Hanapepe Art stroll. Â Ordered the huli huli chicken plate special. Â Wow, biggest half chicken ever. Â We wound up splitting one half between the three of us with our sides and saved the other two halves for later (another two meals). Â Chicken was moist and flavorful and a good value.
Review Source:Okay, I would just like to start by saying, Zippy's, L&L, Loco Moco & every other plate lunch place I've been, you have got NOTHING, I repeat NOTHING on Bobbie's. Â As an Oahu native I've tried them all and no place comes close to Bobbie's. Â
I've been to Bobbie's 3 times. Â The first time was about 2 years ago. My friend and I were on our inter-island mini-vacation and we had just finished Waimea Canyon and we were driving back to Kapa'a and we were hungry, like really hungry.
Okay! Let's stop in Hanapepe and see if there are any good mom & pop kine restaurants. Â How lucky were we that we ended up at Bobbie's? Â Now here's the thing, every time I have been I've always ordered the same thing, Korean Chicken, because I am obsessed. I don't remember what plate number it is but I get the korean fried chicken with rice and fried saimin. Talk about Carb overload. Â It is SO GOOD! And as for the fried saimin, Â it is just as good, if not better than most places I've been.
The Chicken is tender on the inside and crispy on the outside and the glaze/sauce is to die for. Â I can't say enough good things about this plate lunch. Â My mouth is watering now, even as I write this review. Â Aside from the food, the service is so friendly, which is a nice change from some of the Oahu joints I frequent. Â If you are looking for some up-scale dining place, then don't dine here, but I bet you the food here is better than the up-scale place you will go. Â Side note* they only accept cash.
I can't wait for my next trip to Kauai, Bobbie's will be calling my name.
5 Korean fried chicken filled Stars.
DEE BEST plate lunches! Â ordered a #7 - Da Mean box with korean chicken, pork katsu, fried saimin noodles, and rice. Â The korean chicken was awesome, a little spicy and crispy goodness. Â Their gravy is really good too, basically everything was awesome. Â It's a mom and pop place with love put into every plate so give it a try! Â You won't have to eat for another 24 hours :)
Review Source:My search to find the "best plate lunch" in Hawaii is challenging with so many overwhelming options to choose from. Understanding the key factors of what constructs a plate lunch is essential to discovering a winner.
Google "plate lunch" and several images immediately displays followed by a distorted Wikipedia definition. The easiest description of this local phenomenon is a styrofoam container holding two scoops of rice, one scoop of macaroni or tossed salad, and a main course of protein. Some popular protein choices include chicken katsu, barbeque chicken, hamburger steak, kalbi short ribs, breaded mahi mahi, teriyaki beef, pulehu ribs, loco moco (hamburger patty topped with an egg and gravy), garlic shrimp, kalua pork, lau lau, pork chops, and Spam. Combinations between these items are infinite and the ordering process may command some creativity.
My premise of plate lunch perfection consists of only one scoop of rice and macaroni salad, and three protein items for the main course, smothered with "choke" (local term for "bountiful" or "plenty") gravy. Keeping this subjective blueprint in mind, I traveled Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Big Island, and Kauai trying various venues followed by strenuous workouts (an effort to prevent the "choke" gravy I requested from showing up on my hips).
On Kauai, I enjoyed my stay in Poipu and befriended a bartender named Kawika (kah-vee-kah). Kawika learned of my "best plate lunch" hunt and suggested I try Bobbies located in Hanapepe. Hanapepe, the oldest historical town in Kauai, reminds me of the television show set of Bonanza. Bobbies can be described as a small hole-in-the-wall establishment with charismatic and friendly staff behind the counter. Of all the delightful items offered on the menu, the number five struck a chord with my salivating glands.
It read "#5 - Da Gravy Box". The name describes it all. This plate lunch is literally a box full of creamy gravy generously spread over choices of kalua pork, hamburger steak, and chicken katsu. The tender hamburger meat, topped with sauteed mushrooms and onions, and crispy chicken katsu was perfectly balanced with the softness of steamy rice. Coldness from the homemade macaroni salad mixed with warm smokey flavors of kalua pork was pure heaven. My search briefly came to an end. I found one of Hawaii's best plate lunch in Hanapepe, Kauai.
Hanahou Hanapepe!

The food was very good, but not the best. I give it a 4 because the staff is warm, friendly, and helpful; the setting is leaning toward Hawaiianna; and the other nearby options are so much worse. My lau lau was delicious in spite of more fat than customary. The mac salad was v. good. I guess the fried saimin is an acquired taste. I'll definitely be back.
Review Source:We just returned from 2 weeks in Kauai, and went to Bobbie's 4 times! it's a great introduction to a Hawaii specialty, plate lunch. Each plate has a variety of kinds of food on it, and several options are listed on sheets of paper taped to the wall. We tried just about everything and enjoyed it. One tip: unless you are a huge eater, feel free to split a plate. They will bring you an extra dish so you can split it up however you like. Very friendly service, good prices (especially if you split a plate), good local atmosphere. You might need to be prepared to wait awhile at peak times. Sit outside and enjoy the folks going by in this low-key town.
Review Source:After reading some great reviews from others, we decided to stop by here on our last full day in Kauai.
If you're trying to find this place, point your GPS nav at 3814 Hanapepe Rd., not 3620! 3620 will lead you to an abandoned building about 3 blocks away from where you should be. When we called to get directions, we learned that in Kauai, directions doesn't mean road names, street numbers, etc, it means 'landmarks.' After some hunting, we finally found this place given the landmarks that the person on the phone from Bobbie's gave us.
When we arrived, we decided to share a #7, Da Mean Box with Korean Chicken, Chicken Katsu, Tossed Salad, and Rice. The food was ok, but I think the katsu was over fried and the korean chicken is super deep fried. If you're not ready to down a super deep fried meal, you should look else where.
Overall, the service was nice and the food tasted good. It wasn't blow-your-mind outstanding, and (I hate to say this...) I think you can get a better tasting meal at L&L. Sorry Bobbie's, while we were thankful for your kind service and food, I think our experience wasn't the same as some of the 5 star reviews you've received.
We came here after we found good reviews from other yelpers.
We ordered dish #9, which was the Korean chicken and Shrimp Tempura.
The food is very tasty, maybe a little bit burned.
It is very deep fried and while freshly prepared somewhat greasy. Can't do it very often.
The setting is simple and the people are modestly friendly.
A negative is certainly that they don't have restroms and send people across the street to a local art store.
Other than that, it is certainly less touristy than other spots which we prefer!
On our 3rd day in Kauai - we wanted to tour the West Side of the island. Â After a morning of laying out by the pool, by noon, we wanted lunch. Â
Yelped some lunch places in Hanapepe and Waimea and this was the first on the lunch lists of Yelp. Â It had decent reviews so we gave it a try.
Hubby ordered a #7 - da mean box with korean chicken, pork katsu, fried saimin noodles, and rice. Â I ordered the mini bento korean chicken and rice. Â We should've just ordered the #7 for the both of us because the portions were huge! Â One box is more than enough for two. Â The korean chicken was tasty - crispy, mild spicy and tangy. Â pork katsu was crispy. Â We love the batter they use, it's light and not greasy. Â They cook right when you order, so your food is always fresh!
Bobbie's was definitely a locals place, you can't find food like this anywhere else!
Definitely recommend.
Ate here three times during our stay. Best Bento-Plate Lunch of the four or five we tried. The Korean Chicken was crispy spicy goodness. Be warned it's salty. The Lau Lau pork was moist an delicious. The fried saimin noodles were a nice substitute for white rice. The Tempura shrimp are tasty even if they are a bit overpriced (1.50 per)
The people running the place are cool as hell. Worth a stop.
In our week stay in Kauai - Bobbie's was my most memorable meal. Â It's on a tiny and charming side road in Hanapepe. Â We went here right after one of our rafting tours nearby.
This is definitely one of the local joints that you just gotta try. Â I got one of Da Gravy meals that had pork, hamburger steak, AND katsu. Â Came with rice and mac (of course) and was drenched in the best gravy I've had on the island. Â The portions were pretty huge and all that food for I think less than 10 bucks was a steak. Â I don't know what kind of seasonings they use, but it was ONO! Â
This is definitely a mom and pop joint. Â We actually came near closing time so they let us take our food outside to eat as they locked up. Â They told us to just leave our plates and trays outside. Â Totally laid back and friendly, which I like.
If I ever have a chance to go back to Kauai in my lifetime, I hope this little spot is still around!
my co-workers always bring up bobbie's as a suggestion when we're debating on what to do for lunch here on the west side of kauai.
i finally decided to give it a try.
i ordered the chicken katsu to go.
service was friendly when i went in to pick up my food order. the restaurant seemed very clean and neat. they just opened, so nobody was dining there yet.
got back to the office and...
..i wasn't super impressed with the katsu. it was just a little burnt, but the flavor was still okay.
my co-worker told me not to get the mac salad, so i asked to substitute with a scoop of rice instead. i was jipped on that. i'm not sure if you're not allowed to substitute, but she didn't say anything when i asked over the phone.
over all -- not that bad. i would definitely order from there again. i just might try another plate lunch!
Talk about a plate lunch! Â Bobbie's may very well have the best on the island. Â Certainly the best on the west side!
Stopped for some lunch and was amazed at the options available. Â The Wife and I shared the Surf and Turf combo which had 2 fried prawns, 2 pieces of fried ono, some teri beef, rice and mac salad. My goodness! Â It was all wonderful. Â The batter on the ono was crisp and not greasy and the beef was tender. Â I didn't get to try the shrimp because The Wife got to them first!
If you are on the west side, make the trip to Hanapepe town. Â Get your plate lunch to go like we did and take it to Salt Pond Beach or eat it there at Bobbie's. Â You won't go wrong.
The women were shoppin' , the men were eatin' in Hanapepe. I think we (the men) got the better end of the deal!
I won't go into what all we all ate, but I will put up a picture of the menu when I can. They give you a LOT of food and they include fried saimin as well as rice on most of their plate lunches.
If you are coming back from Waimea Canyon, this is a nice stop and it is a cute town for shopping if that is your thing. I think I'd come back to Bobbies just for it.
We came here when the city of Hanapepe was having their art and wine night. We ordered the loco moco with fish which is a first ,and the Korean chicken combo which came with rice and mac salad. The food was very good. The loco moco was very interesting being that most loco moco's I have seen come with beef. The Korean chicken was very good and tasty. If you are ever in the area, check them out.
