Aloha from Kaua'i!
I've always loved Tahina's - I love their bubble drinks, and their snacks are so ono! Â
They used to be located in Hanapepe - but have relocated to Kalaheo - in the same little shopping area that has Pomodoro Restaurant (downstairs though).
Worth a stop for bubble drinks, shave ice, and other ono stuffs!
A local favorite for a number of years now!
This is a side-of-the-road stop with four plastic poolside chairs (one is broken) and a table that is partially covered by an overhang. They have boba (mostly fruit juices vs. tea), shaved ice, smoothies, hot dogs & chili, and your usual range of fried stuff -- fish, shrimp, calamari (though they were out when we went), waffle-cut fries, etc. Service was businesslike, which for this island seemed a little cold and unfriendly, but it was hot out and it appeared business may have been slow.
My friend and I both had the shrimp & chips. The breading on the shrimp was very crisp, with only one mushy part on one of the shrimp (there were four), and was fried a beautiful golden-brown, but it was also nearly translucent with grease. After I took my napkin (a square of paper towel), folded it in half, and absorbed the extra grease off the surface of my shrimp, it tasted fine (decent-sized shrimp, not too small but not huge), but my stomach wasn't too happy with all that oil. (I had a bottled water with it; I should have ordered their fresh-squeezed lemonade). The fries tasted like they had been frozen.
Bottom line: for those who like the greasy-spoon places, this would probably be OK. Wasn't the greatest for me, but I appreciated the local flavor.
