five, yes, five stars. Â The Boro is as good as it gets for a little divey beer bar with food and a good-to-great beer selection. Â Always dim and lit with the bare minimum of reddish neon, the place has something like 10-12 taps, more than half of which are generally very good choices. Â On top of that, there are some 80-odd bottle selections, including a fine selection of European lagers that are becoming increasingly hard to find in the US. Â They also carry a small selection of "high gravity" beers, meaning I believe that they must carry a liquor license, but nothing other than beer is served.* Â
The food is great for the smallish selection of bar-type sandwiches and appetizers that they offer. Â Very reasonably priced, the burgers are made from hand-formed patties that they grill up to order, and the simple sides like fries and onion rings are also excellent. Â The only small gripe I have is that it would be too easy to replace the mealy white-bread buns with something slightly better. Â [UPDATE 9/12:] Â ((the sandwiches now come on highly pleasant little ciabatta rolls. Â So therefore the Boro is now perfect.))
There has been a pretty steady turnover in bartenders over the last few years, unlike say five years ago when the staff was a lot more stable. Â Still, there are generally 2-3 tattooed, college-aged women on hand to direct you to a tasty beer, grill up your burger, or take your request from their massive collection of tunes stored on an old PC behind the bar. Â The music is typically very good classic alternative mixed with some classic rock and whatever's hot on the college radio blogs these days. Â
For years this was, and arguably still is, one of my favorite bars in Tennessee. Â Not much has changed in the 8 years I've known it. Â And not much has needed to.
*((another, less important, update: they apparently have wine also, but I don't believe it's encouraged. Â They have literally 8 wine glasses in the whole bar, and I'm pretty sure I've never seen them used.))
