five, yes, five stars. Â The Boro is as good as it gets for a little divey beer bar with food and a good-to-great beer selection. Â Always dim and lit with the bare minimum of reddish neon, the place has something like 10-12 taps, more than half of which are generally very good choices. Â On top of that, there are some 80-odd bottle selections, including a fine selection of European lagers that are becoming increasingly hard to find in the US. Â They also carry a small selection of "high gravity" beers, meaning I believe that they must carry a liquor license, but nothing other than beer is served.* Â
The food is great for the smallish selection of bar-type sandwiches and appetizers that they offer. Â Very reasonably priced, the burgers are made from hand-formed patties that they grill up to order, and the simple sides like fries and onion rings are also excellent. Â The only small gripe I have is that it would be too easy to replace the mealy white-bread buns with something slightly better. Â [UPDATE 9/12:] Â ((the sandwiches now come on highly pleasant little ciabatta rolls. Â So therefore the Boro is now perfect.))
There has been a pretty steady turnover in bartenders over the last few years, unlike say five years ago when the staff was a lot more stable. Â Still, there are generally 2-3 tattooed, college-aged women on hand to direct you to a tasty beer, grill up your burger, or take your request from their massive collection of tunes stored on an old PC behind the bar. Â The music is typically very good classic alternative mixed with some classic rock and whatever's hot on the college radio blogs these days. Â
For years this was, and arguably still is, one of my favorite bars in Tennessee. Â Not much has changed in the 8 years I've known it. Â And not much has needed to.
*((another, less important, update: they apparently have wine also, but I don't believe it's encouraged. Â They have literally 8 wine glasses in the whole bar, and I'm pretty sure I've never seen them used.))
Some experimental/indie bands come through, which is cool.  My only objection. It's a  Beer and Wine only bar.  Which always sucks for me.  Usually its full of college kids/scene kids.  But depending on the band it will draw people from all worlds.  It's a cool place.  Smoking is allowed.  You can sit in big round booths.  Good place to see a show.  Just pocket a flask if you don't like beer or wine. Never had their food.  I've heard good stories though!
Review Source:What drives me crazy about The Boro is that they don't take credit cards, but they serve food. I can understand a dive bar that is just a dive bar only taking cash, but when you've got to pay for beer and food in cash, that's just downright annoying.
The food is surprisingly decent though. It's nothing to scream and shout about, but it does the trick. The Boro doesn't serve anything but beer, but the selection of it is pretty good, with a large number of those beers on tap, and the prices are still Murfreesboro prices, which is great because there's a lot of places in the 'boro who think they can now charge Nashville prices. I've been here for lunch during the day, and it's pretty boring and ordinary, but occasionally, if someone good is playing, the atmosphere lights up.
There's comfortable booth seating, and if you want to get away from the general noise, you can go into the screened porch patio room and play pool and hear yourself think.
It's really not a bad little bar for Murfreesboro, and a little less shady than similar options there.
Even for Murfreesboro, this is an exceptionally junky little dive bar. Â The building itself is roomy and the staff is nice enough. Â The beer is also relatively inexpensive. Â Other than that, however, The Boro just doesn't have much going on.
We played a show at The Boro once, and we had more technical difficulties than at any other performance. Â The PA went out during our set, and the TVs over our heads continually played NASCAR the whole evening. Â I've never sampled the food, but my guess is it's average bar food.
I'm not trying to dog too hard on The Boro. Â Sadly, Murfreesboro just doesn't have a sufficient selection of bars (especially for a college town). Â If you're stuck in Murfreesboro and looking for a bar...well then you're in the wrong city. Â But if you must go out...pick somewhere else.
The Boro Bar & Grill is geared towards the neighbouring  M.T.S.U.  They serve tons of different bottled beers, and lots and lots of Pabst Blue Ribbon, the signature beer of all college rock bars. The vibe of the bar is totally laid back.  Whoever is charge of the music has great taste.  I was in there waiting to hear a band play, and the room music played by the bar was fantastic, they played Portishead, and Fugazi.  I was floored. I never hear these bands.  So, I instantly had a good feeling about the Boro.
They have a full food menu. The selection is pretty typical bar food it includes sandwiches and hot wings. They have beer specials and can get pretty crowded throughout the school year. Â Its is a lot quieter in the summer months. Â They have huge garage doors that they can open onto the patio to make the entire bar open air. Â This is when the Boro is at its best. Â
The bar is definitely not a classy joint, but for a college bar, that hosts bands, its not bad at all. The sound system is always brought by the bands playing that night so that sound can be hit or miss.
They do have free wifi!
