...& Ice Cream...
Yes it is open, and late on a Friday night! Â We had the ice cream. Â
See the review on the "Closed" listing of this same business for more details,
but basically it was average ice cream. Â Not too expensive, not too creamy, a little artificial but hey, it's still ice cream! Â Variety of flavors was a little above average.
It does have a cool classic feel with the black and white checkerboard floors and red plastic seat covers on the stools. Â And there was a genuinely inspiring harmonica player alone on the street out front when we arrived...
This place is the BOMB! Â
Like the previous reviewer, my wife and I dined at this establishment before it's mysterious closing and were thrilled when we discovered when it reopened!
We haven't tried much on the menu other than the pizza, because this place has the best pizza in Fort Wayne. Â We have seen other tables partake of the sandwiches and the cheese bread, which look extremely mouth watering, but we just LOVE their pizza.
The restaurant is fairly small with just 3 or 4 tables in the dining room with 3 bar height tables in the ice cream area. Â We've never had a hard time getting a table though. Â The staff is very friendly and once you've met them, they always welcome you back. Â My wife and I love to sit at the table in the front of the restaurant and watch the people and bicycle traffic pass by on Berry street. Â There are always families there having their pizza and then their kids drag them over to the ice cream room to have dessert. Â It's a very friendly and family environment.
The pizza at Bortol's is not your average $7 to $10 pizzas you get to go from the chains, it's a bit more expensive, but it's worth every dime. Â The toppings are generous and the cheese is alway plentiful and chewy. Â The one thing we really like about the pizza is that the cheese always has portions that are browned like pizza used to be and the pizza is always topped with a dusting of oregano. Â The crust is soft and delicious and not too thin. Â Great stuff.
Oh, and did I forget to mention, they play the best music of any restaurant in Fort Wayne? Â 60s, 70s, and 80s, R&B and Soul! Â Just wish they could fit a dance floor in there.
