I was almost to my destination of Pendleton but forgot the Pendleton Pike would take me thru Fortville and one of my fav Indiana eateries. Â When I realized where I was I immediately pulled into the Broadway Diner for my first Indiana food! Â
Naturally I ordered the pork tenderloin, billed as a "Wet Tenderloin," after clarifying with the waitress if "wet" meant covered in gravy. Â It did. Â The pork tenderloin was moist and tender on the inside and crunchy on the outside, just as it should be. Â I stopped using my knife to cut it when I discoveref how easily it cut with a fork. Â
It came with a crisp salad and my choice of mashed potatoes and gravy plus Indiana style green beans cooked in a generous portion of pork fat. Â Life is good. Â
Once my Hoosier cravings were satiated I hit the road again. Â I can't wait to go back.
This is the type of greasy spoon--emphasis on greasy--that's near and dear to the hearts of locals, but pretty much mystifying to the rest of the world. The decor is a hodgepodge--a few cheap cloth booths, some painted black garden trellises, a framed Goldmember movie poster, a clock that looks like the lungs of a lifelong smoker....
Our rye toast came out with a spot of green mold on it, and the teenage waitress seemed genuinely distressed when we pointed it out. "OH. MY. GOD," she responded in a tone so appropriate to her age that I laughed about it all morning.
The mold spores scored us a free breakfast, but it wasn't enough to make up for the general lack of charm and lackluster food. I love diners, even some of the greasiest, diviest ones, but this one didn't rank, unfortunately.
This is connected to the Fuzz-Z's bar, where a friend bar tends on Saturday days. Â I ate at the bar and ordered food from the Broadway diner. Â I had gyros, which were very good. Â I will be back again to see my friend and I will have the tenderloin which she says is great and then other food later. Â The bar is what it is, the customer base is just about all locals; country is played on the juke box and satellite radio and NASCAR is the sport of choice and it gets very smoky. Â Drinks are very cheap..$1.75 for domestic bottles. Â We went back Sat. night (my friend who bartends and another friend) and there were about 40 people there and the night bartender was very nice and she served us efficiently and I took care of her very well.
