Good selection of beers on tap and the menu has a lot of choices. Â The menu is bigger and different from the tap room.
I got  a cup of spicy chicken tortilla soup and the blackened catfish sandwich special.  The soup was definately spicy with a nice assortment of veggies.  The sandwich was just so-so.  The flavors were there, but the bread overwhelmed the overcooked filet.  I don't think the pan was hot enough to get that good blackened sear.  It would have been better served on their rice.
Delicious, home cooked food, massive portions, fantastic drink and  beer selection, and a friendly, accommodating staff in a casual setting.  You can't ask for more in a pub.  This is my family's go- to restaurant.
The Cobb salad is always satisfying, the burgers are delicious, the wings are the best in town, and don't miss the buffalo Mac and cheese.
My husband loved the beer selection here. His favorite was the Boneyard RPM IPA. We split the bbq salmon sandwich and the cobb salad. We should have asked how much a serving size was because both orders were extremely generous & perfectly prepared. We left feeling stuffed and talking about what we wanted to order next time. Â
We went at an odd time on a Sunday and the place was packed from wall to wall. The staff was incredibly knowledge about beer and helpful. This is a great place to check out!
Standard fair, and it did the job for 3 hungry folks doing a late lunch. Â The first encounter with a wait crew was initially a grouchy one as she asked us to wait for a table in a less than pleasant tone. Â We later learned it had been a 45 minute wait for patrons all day as it is the holiday season. Â So apparently this staff member was overworked on this day, but should that turn into someone else's fault? Â But our official table server was nicer then the initial. Â The beer list is okay and the salmon burger I ordered was excellent and filling. Â Salmon and BBQ sauce, who knew... The homemade honey mustard dressing on the side salad was good also. Â By the end of our meal our server who made the initial gaffe seemed less offensive and we were happy with our choice of trying this location. Â Maybe a bit overrated but good by my measure.
Review Source:Pretty close to 5 stars for me. I was planning on going here but parked closer to 10 barrel. Glad I ended up at brother johns instead.
There was a party of about 1,000,000 in the back room. They said 45 min wait but we immediately sat at the bar.
All the bartenders seemed really friendly. Ours was great. Some guy from Wisconsin. Sometimes in bend there is crappy ski bum service. Not at brother johns.
We both had ciders which were great. I ordered the cobb salad (trying to watch my girlish figure) it was actually quite tasty. Ryan had the western burger with spinach salad (he's not so concerned about figure) it was enormous! I wish he would have ordered it with fries as all the orders that were coming from the kitchen looked fantastic. Hand made I presume?
The atmosphere is fun! I wouldn't come here on a first date... It was pretty loud. It's a brewpub and if you have higher expectations from dinner don't go here. If you want fun, drinks, great service and decent food give this place a try.
I'll be back to try those fries!
Finally tried the downtown location, and they have delivered again! I decided  to have the Bangers and Mash Potatoes, great for a Fall day in Bend.  The potatoes had been whipped correctly, and although the mustard was made not in-house great compliment to the plate.  Beer selection is top notch, with all the brews leaning towards the 7% mark, and any Bendite would be proud.
Review Source:I look forward to stopping here whenever I stay in Bend. Â Check the specials board as they have had some good stuff on there. Â I had the steak sandwich off the specials (flat iron steak I think) that was delicious. Â A perfect sandwich. Â The BBQ pork sandwich was really good too. Â If you're visiting Bend, skip the Deshutes Brewery restaurant and go here instead. Â Good prices, good food, good beer, and good people. A chill place.
Review Source:I was really happy with my dinner here. Â I ordered the ribs. Â And they were delish. Â My husband ask for a recommendation and was told that the spicy buffalo mac n cheese was really good, and the most popular item on the menu. Â We have a theory that maybe its the most popular item because the waiters tell everyone that. Â Its was bland however it was spicy.
I give 4 stars because my sons mac n cheese was so cheesy and delicious and my ribs were so stinkin good. Â
I think we will definitely be back again!
I had been hearing good things about Brother Jon's for awhile, so I decided to give it a try with a friend. The delicious smell of food cooking hits you the minute you get out of the car!
The servers were super friendly right off the bat. They're chatty, but not overly so, and seem very genuinely nice. They seem to be happy to be working there -- either they really are, or they're very good at acting that way!
I had to try the Capt Jack Sparrow -- excellent! The pulled pork was moist and tender and the hand-cut fries were really good, too. Plus I had the best glass of iced tea I've had in a long time. My friend had the hickory smoked chicken BLT and raved about it. And the portion sizes were HUGE! We were both really glad that we hadn't had breakfast that day! The prices were pretty reasonable, especially for the amount of food we got.
The atmosphere is definitely funky and cool and the menu had plenty of tempting options. I will definitely be returning here!
The patio was nice, i was able to sit outside with my dog, which is always a good thing. The food was way overpriced for the type of food it was, i.e.: nothing more than a step above bar food. My chix burger was terrible, the bread was soggy and the taste was not ideal. The jalapeno dip was pretty good though. The soup, less the par. My boyfriend enjoyed his habanero burger for the most part, the bread still soggy a bit though. I would not go back. I will say that our server was really nice and quick though, the food was just not up my alley.
Review Source:Best pub in Bend! Â Just spent 5 days cycling in Bend and hit this place by accident....3 times.
Bar staff are friendly and really want you to have a good time. Â Beer is exceptional and staff knows thier products. Â Pub fare is great and for $10 you eat well.
10 minute walk or $6 taxi from the heart of downtown.
Traveling through to coast, stopped here for lunch, fantastic! Â I had the carbonara mac & cheese, and the wife had the smoked roast beef French dip. Â Both came with garden salad and both were excellent.
The service was fun, the atmosphere very eclectic and I will visit again every chance I get!!
Good food, reasonable prices (for Bend)and good wine/beer list. We were there when it was fairly empty and service was ok, but not stellar. Typically there's a wait so it's hard to say what kind of service you'd get when they are slammed. My wife thought three stars was closer to the truth but I think they slide into four.
Review Source:Great place to eat. Â Got there for an early dinner on a Sunday and not crowded, YET. Â The service is excellent there. Â The waitresses are very attentive and very congenial too. Â That's always one thing I need to keep going back to a place. Â I live in LA but go to Bend a lot because I love the area. Â The burger I got was a little too char broiled thus the 4 star. Â The bacon in it was excellent. Â The fresh veggies that come with it were great too. Â I will definitely go there again.
Review Source:Ok, I admit it. Â I'm absolutely addicted to this place. Â The bf and I came to bend for three days and we ate there THREE TIMES. Â We would have eaten every meal here over those three days if I had my way.
The bf tried a couple of the beers that they had on tap. Â Squatters Hop Rising Double IPA was just OK - it just didn't taste very IPA-y. Â The Hopworks Urban Brewery IPA is definitely a good pick but next time we'll try the Boneyard RPM IPA!
Now onto the food - HUMUNGOUS portions at a VERY FAIR price! Â They use high quality fresh ingredients and really season their food well! Â We tried the following menu items:
- Buffalo Macaroni: Â 4 stars - I loved this because it brought back a bit of nostalgia. Â It reminded me of an adult version of Hamburger Helper. Â A word of caution - pop your antacids before you eat this dish because the chef is very heavy-handed with the cheese. Â This comes with a side salad which we downed with a side of their house-made Dill Ranch dressing. Â I'm a HUGE sauce connoisseur, especially when it comes to Ranch and their version is among the best I've had!
- Hickory Smoked 1/2 Rack of Ribs: 5 stars (but I'd give it a 10 out of 5 if I could). Â These were SO delicious and I'm not even a huge fan of BBQ. Â They were tender, fall-off-the-bone, cooked perfectly, VERY MEATY ribs w/ just the right amount of char, sauce and fat. Â These were SO delicious that we actually ordered them two days in a row! Â The fresh hand-cut fries with sea salt were RIDICULOUS. Â I swear by McDonald's fries but these gave them a run for their money. Â Ask for a side of their dill ranch to dip them in and that'll put them over-the-top.
- Ranch Burger w/ Hand Cut Fries: 5 stars - Wow, honestly....I think this is the best burger I've ever had. Â If you're trying to decide on which burger to order, you can't go wrong with this one! Â I believe their buns are made by Sparrow Bakery and are a nice soft complement to the delicious burger.
- Brother Jon's Chicken Sandwich: 3.5 stars - The bf LOVED this but I tend to like my food smothered in sauce and fat so this was a little too "healthy" for me! Â Definitely worth ordering if you're looking for a lighter meal. Â The chicken breast was moist and grilled well and it comes on that stellar Sparrow Bakery bun! Â We opted to order this with veggies but definitely upgrade to the fries for an extra $1.50 if you can afford the splurge!
- Full Cobb Salad: Â 5 stars of PURE WOW! Â This is the most awesome salad I have ever had IN MY LIFE. Â Get it with the dill ranch instead of the blue cheese dressing. Â Since the salad already comes with a huge scoop of blue cheese, sub-ing ranch makes it less overwhelming. Â This salad is HUGE enough to feed two.
Everything about this place is awesome. Â It's filled with friendly locals who all seem to know each other! Â The place is buzzing with energy! Â The only downside is that the wait can be 45+ minutes during busy times!
We can't wait to come back here!
I was a little disappointed. We shared the Reuben and the bread was totally soggy on the bottom half and it was not heated all the way through. A good Reuben should have toasty bread and hot pastrami, mine had neither. I think it would have been good, though, if it were prepared correctly.
I like the fries, my wife was not a big fan, depends on your taste I guess. But they were fresh and a large portion for sure. We didn't care for "the bomb" sauce by itself, but I seriously loved it when I mixed it up with some ketchup.
The beer list was very good, plenty of good options.
Service was a little slow, but they knew it and were apologetic and comped a brownie for us, even though we weren't complaining about anything - so that was nice.
Since my last review Brother Jon's has definitely won me over. Â I can't say that I ever tried the nachos again, but the rest of their food has been consistently great. Â I can honestly say that two of their specials (their daily specials are better than their regular menu most of the time) have been the best meals I have had in Bend since I arrived in 2004. Â I will continue to go.
Review Source:Great Food and Beer selection. Â The Captain Jack Sparrow has taken over as my favorite sandwich in Bend (sorry BBQ pit sandwich at Cascade Lakes). Â How can you go wrong with sweet pulled pork stacked on top of more pork, smothered with cheese and immersed with sauce? And it's healthy because it has fruit - a grilled pineapple.
Review Source:Passing through Bend on vacation we found this place through Yelp and we were not dissapointed. My husband had the half rack of ribs and I had the Mac and Cheese. Everything we had was delicious, and the servings large enough that I even had leftovers.
The service was exceptional! Even though we obviously weren't regulars they treated us like we were.
I agree with other reviewers that parking is minimal; we were lucky to get one of the two parking spaces in front.
I've only eaten here once and it was while waiting for a tattoo appointment to Mum's next door. I thought the food was fine. I was a little underwhelmed at the time (and this was about a year and half ago) by the fact that it looks basically like a deli inside. I was really expecting more of a pub feel or even sports bar. It was quite empty and felt like the staff was just waiting for us to ask for something more, which means they were attentive, but also can feel overbearing.
Since I don't live in Bend anymore, I won't be going there anytime soon, but I do feel like I would try them again to get a better feel or maybe on a night where there was something going on at the restaurant or around the neighborhood.
This was my second outing to Brother Jon's. I played it safe and ordered the macaroni and cheese again and it was just as fabulous as the first time. It comes with a salad, which could be a meal by itself, and 2 pieces of bread. The mac and cheese is very gooey and cheesey and you could easily feed 2 people with this dish.
My only complaint is the noise level. The place was only half full and I could barely hear my lunchmates and had to repeat myself or ask someone to repeat themselves often.
Pulled porkgasim!
Great local spot with wonderful food and an assortment of local beers on tap with even more in bottle.
The service was friendly and attentive. Â Brother Jon's was busy at 2:00 PM on a Thursday and for a reason. Â They are a great local joint with a casual feel that serves up really delicious food.
We had their pulled pork ("Captain Jack Sparrow") sandwich with fresh house-made kettle chips. Â Between my wife and I the sandwich was enough food to enjoy, but not enough to stuff us. Â We opted to top off our meal with their multi-berry cobbler Ala mode and were happily surprised.
If you're looking for a relaxed place with a whole host of regional beers and awesome food in a relaxed environment with affordable, but not cheap, food then Brother Jon's Public House is the place to be. Â
We were in and out for under $20 after tip.
Great local beers, even better locals to chill with, and enough amazing food that I always had leftovers. Â
Being in town for about 10 days on business, my hours at work were often late, and Brother Jon's kitchen was always there when I needed them. Â I'd intended to do take-out my first night there, and just loved the vibe enough I stayed for dinner instead. Â Chill enough people that one guy let me sit at his table so I could watch the hockey game on TV without twisting around after every bite of my food at the bar. Â
Buffalo Mac & Cheese (with bacon - thumbs-up to Wrong D for the tip!) was extraordinary. Â I know I ate something else there at least once...but it paled in comparison. Â Can't wait to go back.
Usually when I love a restaurant it's because there is something on the menu that I love. One thing. And usually in those cases if I get crazy and order anything but the one thing I love, I'm disappointed to have lost the opportunity to eat the thing I really like. At Brother Jon's I've had five different things from the menu and I have yet to establish a favorite. The toughest thing looking over the menu is deciding which ones NOT to get. Â I don't know of any other place with so many things that I absolutely love. I no longer live in Bend and brother Jon's is one of the things I miss the most.
The things I love:
Buffalo Mac
Eggless Carbonara
Captain Jack Sparrow Sandwich
Club Sandwich
and.. I can't think of the other thing.
Mind you, these are just the things I've had. I hesitate to try another new thing, because it's already hard enough to choose from the list of favorites such as it is...
Good job Brother Jon's! Best place in bend for great food/beer/service/time!
The staff at brother jon's are always on top things. The food is always hot, and so good! I love the ribs and have seen the love for the buffalo mac n cheese.
They also have lots of Oregon beers on tap from Hopworks, Boneyard Beer, Terminal Gravity, and Caldera.
We go there at least once a week it seems. A great place to eat and socialize!
Oh Bro-Jo, you do me good.
This is a locals-catering restaurant on Bend's westside, offering a ton of great microbrews and a nice publike food menu. A few signature items like the buffalo mac aren't epic, but they grow on you. The potions are large and the prices are very good.
The atmosphere is minimal, just an old westside house converted, with some posters and paintings on the walls, a few televisions, and a small bar that seats five or six. They play Phish and the Dead on occasion, a nice touch, but usually the crowd is way loud, especially at peak dinner hours. There's only a dozen tables (and outside in summer), and not really room to wait, so just make sure you go sometime other than 6-730 any night.
The service is impeccable, especially with the place being so small and the same staff has been there since opening. They'll recognize you by your third visit.
My favorite restaurant in Bend. Great food for great prices, and a worthy beer list too. I usually stop in after an afternoon on Phil's trail. Best club sandwich in town. They have Terminal Gravity IPA on tap and a decent liquor selection.
Recently, I've been ordering the nightly special. Doesn't matter what it is, I order it. I haven't been let down yet, and it's never been over $10-$12.
Just like the famous old potato chip tag line  "I betcha can't eat just one just one ", I imagine it would be impossible to go to Brother Jon's once and not want to go back again. Here's why:
* The charmingly funky  vibe says "welcome".
* That greeting is continued by the very friendly service.
* It smells good as you walk in (they were making ribs today which contributed to the "aaaaaahhhhhh-roma")
* The sandwiches, salads, soups, and daily specials are affordable. Reasonable prices are particularly noteworthy when it is evident they use quality products. (As in Carlton pork .)
* The restaurant has some outdoor seating on a patio right outside the rear door.
Three of us enjoyed a succulent and savory pulled pork sandwich, that came on a good bun and with delicious coleslaw ($9), a grilled portobello mushroom, spinach, roasted red bell pepper and cheese sandwich ($9) and a generous half size Cobb salad ($7). Sandwiches came with a side of raw veggies - our choice and very good - or chips.
For friends who think of equal access accessiblity, a note that there is accessible parking with a navigable ramp up to the patio dining and side door.  That's a good thing.  But on a not so good thing, I imagine it would be a tight squeeze for a wheelchair or maybe even impossible  given the tight positioning of outdoor (picnic style) tables along the accessible path to the door. The owners ought to take a look at that to be sure the entry is possible for all people.
On more note of just keeping it real for drawbacks here, for anyone the interior would probably feel sardine can tight on evenings when the place is hopping with customers. Â Especially in winter months when the patio isn't open for overflow seating.
Still, overall we are eager to return and hoping they can do something to fix the tight spaces for everyone to get in the door and take a seat.
If I lived in Bend I think this would be my go-to place for a pint and some grub. The prices are SO reasonable...$3.50 for a pint of frothy goodness? Sandwiches well under $10? I think the most expensive thing are a couple of the entrees and they are still under $12 or so.
JP and I first checked this place out in early August...I had read it had recently opened and we were renting a house in the hood so we strolled down. The food was tasty and we walked out of there spending $30 or so for 4 pints, a BBQ pork and Portabella....and it was all good! Staff was great even though it was a busy Saturday night. There is a nice patio space out back too for any spillover or simply to enjoy a nice evening outside.
The interior is a bit awkward since it was once a bungalow, but they make it work to the best of their ability. Â Plus you've got to like the TVs for sports viewing and the dart board (for real darts, not horrible plastic tipped ones). Â
Went back for trip #2 this past week. After the long drive from Seattle I was HUNGRY! They no longer had the Twilight on draft so I had to settle for the Green Lakes Organic, which I don't like as much (that's just my opinion you can have yours!). JP ordered the enchiladas, which were ho-hum, but I went big and selected the buffalo mac....oh cheesy goodness...it was giant portion of elbow mac, cheese, ground buffalo, more cheese, peas, cheese, tomatoes and jalapenos some more cheese. I COULD have probably eaten the entire thing if I didn't have to fit into a wedding dress in a few days...it was damn good! Â The jalapenos add such a nice kick too! Â
We will be back when we are down for some skiing/snowboarding this winter. And for the rest of you...stick to what they do right...the sandwiches or the buffalo mac...just make sure you leave some for me!
