I went into this place because of the name.  It was a Saturday afternoon, and I had some time to kill.  Taking in all of the sites in Monterey, one gets hungry for fish.  What's better in a pub than fish and chips?  The Bulldog's Fish and Chips were served in a traditional  style and had the "newspaper lining" to go with the theme of the place.  I had a good service and I had a nice time-- I didn't feel any awkwardness being that I was there by myself for lunch.
I will say that I do not know what this place is like at night. Â In the middle of a Saturday afternoon, you will find a mixed crowd watching the "telle" and having a good 'ol time watching the game or having a drink and some food. Â At this time of the day, the glass wear is clean too, if that's a concern.
Free sex in the bathroom w/o condoms. Gross..I witnessed it 7 years ago. They are steady and strong in this department. I just want to use the bathroom! I only end up here when I'm super drunk clearly others do as well, but I don't treat it like a bedroom. Funny...you will meet educated people here. Its better than prostitution...I guess.
What?! I have no filters I speak the truth. Its disgusting there. Its got a new look. Super nice. Cliental..shady regulars and I never introduced myself to the people having coitus there. I leave immediately!
Not a cheers!
Nice local spot...off the beaten path of tourists-yuk! Â I like to do some shopping on this street, eat at this pub...bartender is always so friendly and natural. Â The cleanest, girliest restroom I've ever experienced in a pub! Â A big plus!! I loved the fries and onion rings. Â The Mexican food options are not the best...so stick to the American food and you wont go wrong.
Review Source:As mentioned a smallish local hangout that underwent a remodel looking much nicer but retaining that local feel. Â Back bar was updated and multiple televisions screens added for the football or sports enthusiast. Â
FOOD: Â The food is not gourmet but filling and decently priced..the burgers are HUGE as are the side salads. Â The fish and chips is "meh", and the chili watery but nicely spiced, the chicken sandwich well made.
SERVICE: Â All times we visted we were served by Leigh - friendly and attentive - five stars for service.
PRICE: Â For 2 meals and three pints on seperate occaisions the price is roughly 30.00 - 40.00. Â
Good filling food for a good price with a nice relaxed atmosphere - will continue to return.
Thankfully, my neighborhood pub also has the best burger around. The remodel looks great, and Suzy and Brent always pour a nice cold beer. Christine has done a great job with the place. There's plenty of television coverage, and prices are reasonable. My bad experience with dirty looks from dbag dart players in unwashed soccer unis(that's right soccer snobs. I didn't call it football...)from two years ago is a distant memory.
Cheers Bulldog!
On to my 3rd of the Monterey, CA British Pub review afternoon! The Bulldog. Love this place. Its fun any day (and night) of the week. Always packed with fun locals who are nice and love meeting new people, the prices are extremely inexpensive (especially for Monterey) and the pub is British owned and operated. Jeff, the bartender is a riot. Love the accent, and the drinks he pours are stiff. Brent is another very fun bartender. Always a good time, and can whip up a mean specialty cocktail.
*** Come on Sundays to try Brents Bloody Mary. Its absolutely delicious and can serve as an app while waiting to have brunch/lunch/linner :)
Went here late with a couple of friends on a Saturday and grabbed a table. The server never seemed to make it to our end of the pub. After grabbing a menu myself probably twenty minutes later, and going back again to ask for service, she finally came to the table some time later only to tell us the kitchen had just closed. If she had thought to ask for our order earlier, this would likely be a much different review. I'm somewhat glad she didn't even ask if we wanted drinks, as I'm now happy to have not spent a cent here. Atmosphere is alright, though it seemed sorta quiet for a weekend. I'm told the food is good, and the menu looked interesting, but this place needs better service.
Review Source:Great place to go to eat and drink. I have been a few time and have enjoyed everything i have had off the menu.
At night there is a fun youthful vibe. Up to date music and good energy. Always a place to meet new people. It seems that the people who go here just want to have fun.
Quick customer service and they seem to like there job.
Yes, my review might be skewed.
I arrived to the doorway of the local British Pub already stumbling with a hazy memory of what had occurred before. I had asked the locals if they knew a decent place were I could settle my stomach and clear by mind at this late hour. They directed me to this place, yet another pub. Argh, the smell of alcohol jolted me with disgust and I already regretted being here. Oh, how lucky vomit is to be able to escape. Even the pavement looked cleaner.
I sat with some new friends to order whatever the hell the Mexican cook could prepare at 1:24 am on a Saturday. Fish-n-chips said the waitress after I had asked her what she recommends. I said fine. Fine so that she could get her raccoon face away from me.
I drank a beer in the meantime.
My friend ordered some french fries with a side of curry. He said it was a classic British plate. Classic? British? I thought. More like a consequence of migration. No, more like karma of colonization. Ahhh good ol'Britain back in your days. Now, your cursed with the culture of those you oppressed long, long ago.
Whatever. he could eat whatever and call it whatever. That's not my problem. I just need to settle some PH levels inside me and bring down the BAL. Ah romance and alcohol full of chemistry and regrets.
The raccoon arrived and placed a plate overflowing with fries I knew came from a mass produced food company, and what looked like pieces of fried turds.
That's what I get, I thought. Life has a way of mocking you when you feel low.
You already feel like shit, then physical shit turds come to you and your expected to place them on your lips. I'll pass.
I drank the rest of my beer and watched.
I hate to sound sexist, but this lady began to make a scene in the bar area. Was she a product of dangerously mixed cocktails or was she learning the cruelties of the world and needed to escape for one night? Stereotypical female. I think cocktails. Yes it was annoying in case you were wondering ,but it was all the entertainment I had so I took it. I observed her fleather black jacket and it's missing threads and silver buttons. I paid attention to the dirt and scratches of her boots. They were like rings on a tree, they could tell time. I watched the wrinkle in her forehead form and fade as she cursed like a drunk sailor. She went well with my beer. She was the show and my beer was my meal.
The raccoon gave me my bill. I paid the full amount and stumbled out to the beautiful silver pavement of the sidewalk. I walked out of the pub around 2am  still not knowing. I stayed up that night  wanting to escape.
Great neighborhood bar. They have some neat beers on tap including an ale from some brewery in Marina along with their house pale ale. Food is served here as well and is pretty decent, though I would personally prefer to just order a hot dog from Doggie Stylez next door and eat that in the pub. Bartenders are polite, providing consistent service with a fairly consistent smile and, depending on who's your bartender, an authentic British accent! Patrons are nice and jovial with many regulars frequenting this watering hole. Good times overall.
Review Source:We went to monterey for my birthday and were looking for a late place to grab a bite. Â Someone recommended the Bulldog British Pub to us and I'm so glad they did.
It was a local hangout with a bar/grill feeling. Â It was very laid back and the employees were extremely friendly and quick. Â I had the french dip which was the best french dip i had ever had. Â The food was served quick and HOT!!
Will definately be returning when im in the area.
Great service...friendly and fun staff.
Wings are good...you get a huge pile of them. Â Great value. Â And, they are the full wings. Drumstick, 2 part section...and the cute little fried ends.
We call them "hairy wings" because you occasionally see a remnant of feather (gross). Last time...it was pretty evident. Â Today, none. Â Less hairy = good.
Great fast friendly service. Greeted at the door, allowed to sit wherever we liked, and got our food fast and piping hot. I had the fish and chips, and they definitely did not disappoint. Great batter on the fish, with huge chunks of meat. All the typical condiments brought out to the table without even needing to ask. Came back to check on us regularly and made sure all our drinks were topped off.
I'll definitely be stopping in again.
These folks are running a great spot into the ground.
Never known as a classy establishment but never sleazy, trashy and dumpy all at once until now, and it seems to be a steady downward spiral.
As a friend and former patron and I were discussing-- when times get tough (or you decide to spend money you don't have on opening a horrid hole-in-the-wall hotdog hub) DON'T start skimping on your items to make up for it! You'll never recover.
Once the go-to greasy hamburger joint with just enough grit to make you feel like ordering that third pint... now a lame, gross smelling nest of drunk shitheads who drive away good neighborhood folks.
I don't know what the story is here... New ownership? New kitchen crew? Both? But I'm bummed to have lost an old stand-by meeting place we once referred to as "the office".
The food sucks. The atmosphere sucks. Now that they have managed to ruin my favorite veggie burger & salad in the 831, I have no reason to return. Â Â
I'll be checking future yelp reviews hoping they've come to their senses.
This review is for the little cafe next to the pub.
I went there with my son for some hot dogs, since that's what he wanted. Â The inside is really small and quaint, and pretty much hot dogs is all they sell. Â Our two hot dogs came to $10 (just hot dogs mind you). Â So I was expecting big things, since there was a sign outside advertising them. Â Well, when we got them, my son's bun split apart immediately. Â Mine was... for lack of better words... gross. Â The hot dog was dry, and the bun was hard. Â I don't mean 'not soft'. Â I mean, it literally made a knocking sound on the wooden tables they had there.
So I went up to the counter and pointed out our problem and asked if maybe they had some fresher buns. Â The lady looked kind of confused and went back into a metal bin where the buns were stored. Â She said "They're all like that." Â I didn't really know what to say, but to ask if I could have our money back (which I've done maybe twice in my 33 years). Â She really couldn't say anything but "okay", since the food was pretty gross.
In summation, the place is less a 'kitchen' than it is a place where food is reheated and stored. Â Think 7-11 quality, but not as good. Â Oh, and 5x more expensive.
happy yelping!
Nial
I went back with some friends last week and the experience was not quite as good. Â I think it was an off night for them, since it was packed for Monday night (Monday Night Football?) and they were way understaffed. Â Some random guy who may or may not have worked there took our order, which was large. Â He didn't write anything down, and managed to get it mostly right, but he did have to come back and double check a couple things. Â In the process, he didn't ask how I wanted my burger cooked, so it came out well done as opposed to medium/medium rare how I like it/how it was last time. Â I also got the Chester this time, which is a chili burger, and was not impressed with their chili. Â
The fries were still great. Â Friends got chicken sandwiches, other burgers, and a shepherd's pie. Â All sounded like they were just okay. Â We got nachos as an appetizer. Â Those were terrible, I'd avoid them. Â
I'm still giving this place the benefit of the doubt, though. Â We came in late and were starving after playing basketball....so I think the slow service made us enjoy the experience a little less than usual.
Went here with a few coworkers after a day in the Carmel Valley checking out our competition. Â We wanted a more fun place to have some pub food and a few beers. Â They recommended the Bulldog so we gave it a try. Â Their beer selection is pretty weak, or at least no better than your average bar with a weak beer selection. Â I opted for a couple pints of Sierra Nevada. Â The beer was not the most fresh I've tasted, even though it had not travelled far from Chico where it was brewed.
The food was not that good at all. Â I had the reuben with a side salad. Â The side salad was pretty basic and not bad; the bleu cheese dressing it was served with was actually pretty good. Â The sandwich on the other hand was not. Â The rye bread was seemingly very old and did not hold together very well. Â The sliced corned beef was average at best and the cheese and sauerkraut were just average as well. Â Overall, the sandwich was only moderately edible. Â My coworker mentioned the next day that she felt sick from eating it. Â The other dishes at the table looked equally mediocre.
The bar itself had a homey / towny feel to it. Â Seemed to be well established with a lot of local regulars. Â Had a british feel to it, but lacked a good beer selection and menu. Â The table we were sitting had was not level and was dangerously wobbly. Â The bathroom was characteristic of a nice old towny bar. Â Our server lacked personality and didn't fit the feel of the bar.
Overall, not too impressed and I'd pass this place up if I was back in the area.
Love it!
Like I've said before, any place that has cider on tap is fine by me. But beyond that, I've always had a great time at The Bulldog. The bartenders are always friendly... but not just friendly like its part of the job, but like we've all been friends for years.
And if you have a bit too much fun, come back in the morning for one of their omlettes; a guaranteed hangover cure!!
The line at the Aquarium cafe was obscenely long, so we hiked up to Lighthouse Avenue for lunch, only to find the place we were headed to closed. Â The next closest place was the Bulldog, so we decided to give it a shot. Â I was a little wary of taking three preschoolers into a bar, but I'm glad we did. Â The people here were really friendly, we had a wonderful lunch, and a pint went a long way towards calming our rattled nerves.
The food here was tasty and satisfying. Â I really enjoyed "the Dog" (bangers on a roll), Husband loved his steak pie, and Toddler ate all of her fish and chips. Â It's a bit grungy, but comfortable. Â So, if like us you make the mistake of trying to go to Hula's for lunch, head across the street and have a good meal at Bulldog's. Â We were happy we did.
So, it was a Monday night, I didn't feel like cooking and was craving a burger. Â It was around 8:30 and every burger joint was closed, save the fast food places. It was so weird, every place I called, including American Burger in the strip mall across the street closed at 8pm. Â I went onto Yelp and found this place and as a bonus, it was in walking distance of our apartment. Â
It is more of a bar then a restaurant, there were only a few people eating, mostly locals. Â We ordered at the bar and took our seats. Â The food came out fairly quickly and was pretty good. Â We both ordered burgers and fries. Â Both the burgers were well done (didn't try to get it rare at a pub) but still tasted pretty good. Â The bacon on the burger was the best thing, cooked perfectly and thick cut. Â They have a good selection of toppings and I found they make the burger. Â If you are a purist and focus more on the actual burger, then this may not be the place for you. Â
We will definitely go back again, especially since it is the only place open after 9m on a Monday. Â We are not drinkers so I really cant comment on the bar...
My mom and I went here today for a late lunch on a cold, damp day on a trek from South SLO county. This, after discovering our first choice was closed for the afternoon, and a second Yelp consultation on the ol' Blackberry.
Totally solid little joint with an authentic feel and taste. Tons of beer on-tap and a full bar. The bartender/waitress was even from the UK, which you don't usually expect with a British pub (I think 90% of the time they slap "British" onto a bar's name just 'cause they've got Guinness on tap *eye roll*). Not here. In addition to your standard bar food - burgers, fries, nachos etc - they have some english staples like fish & chips, bangers & mash, shepherd's pie, etc. I decided on a steak & mushroom pie w/ puff pastry. It totally hit the spot as a rich, hearty dish. Sampled my mom's choice of fish & chips and almost wished I'd ordered that - it was equally as good.
On this particular monday afternoon, the bartender served as waitress. She was attentive and delightful, despite pulling double duty. It's not cheap (entrees were $11ish, burgers were $9ish), but that's typical of the area. I would absolutely come back again.
I made a beeline for this place right after a recent disappointing football game with the intention of drinking our points back. Â I must say that the bulldog did the job. Â Him and his wild turkey.
This locals bar is very relaxed and laid back, and the female bartender was hilarious. Â She had an entertaining 'tude and feisty Scottish accent. Â She would bark at the bouncer every couple minutes when the jukebox would run out and the bar became silent (which was a bit awkward). Â On slow nights they should get some continuous music going.
This place also has the distinction of being one of the best places to play darts. Â What does this mean? That several drunk, sketchy men will throw darts at the wall, which can be a bit terrifying if you are seated directly to the right of the dartboard. Â I vote for some rearranging here...
They have a great selection of beers on tap as well as a promising food menu, which makes me want to return. Â That, and the fact that it is close enough that we can still stumble back home on foot through an empty PG at 2 in the morning. Hooray for sleepy towns.
After an especially fun night of barhopping in Monterey, this was the last stop of the evening. Â Ordered some fish and chips and I was blown away by how much I liked them. Â They were cooked perfectly and the fish itself was so good! Â It's been a few days and I'm still thinking about them. Â Definitely want to go back and try them again when I'm sober. Â
The staff was really cool too and one of them jokingly gave me a hard time that I didn't eat my peas. Â Never seen peas (and so many peas!) come with an order of fish and chips before, not sure if that's a British thing, but it was pretty funny. Â Next time, I'll probably just ask for no peas and more fries. Â Anyway, great local Brit pub, will definitely be back.
Ate here the other night after a much-delayed flight finally landed. Â Grrr... I needed some eats, so hubby and I met a friend here for a beer and some grub.
It wasn't too full when we got there (9:45 on a Sunday night), so ordering the beers and burgers was a breeze. Â My Royal Bleu burger was awesome with thick, crispy bacon and a nice heaping of bleu cheese. Â Hubby had the fish and chips and he liked them a lot. Â Our friend had the Bulldog Burger and he devoured it quickly. Â
The bartender was great and gave hubby a fresh beer after he accidentally knocked over a full glass of Guinness (I know... alcohol abuse of the worst kind!).
The crowd was nice and got bigger as the evening wore on. Â The music was a bit too loud, as we really wanted to sit and chat over a beer. We ended up having to scream at each other over the music. Â It was REALLY nice when no one used the jukebox for about 15 minutes. Â
I would not come here if you actually want to have a conversation, but it is a great bar for hanging out and enjoying a good beer!
What I liked: Â It's a British-style pub with a Brit bartender. Â Good selection of English ales and American-brewed English-style ales. Â I also enjoyed the Brit bartender slinging a half-dozen coasters from behind the bar at an offending party to get their attention. Â Slick.
What I didn't like: Â The place was full of loud stupids, including a pair of girls who were aggressively pimping Bud Lite. Â The patrons were playing crappy 80s rock on the internet juke box....and probably drinking a lot of Bud Lite. Â It was so loud that I gave up all hope of conversation. Â I don't like bars that are so loud that it inhibits talking, since one of the reasons that I enjoy having more than one beer is to loosen my tongue.
The offending party mentioned above was singing sea chanties, in a British pub, and THEY were singled out as the group that needed to shut the hell up? Â The Bartender should have been slinging those coasters at the people feeding the juke box, or the ones bumping and grinding with the screechy Bud Lite STD carriers.
In many respects this is a great local pub. Â Good variety of beers on tap, darts, food (didn't try it, but it looked pretty good). Â
The crowd was mixed in age, though we were here on a summer night so it seems very possible that the Bulldog is dominated more by students during the school year.
The one downer for me was that the bartender shut down the table full of people singing irish/pirate drinking songs. Â I thought it added a nice touch to the pub, but they got coasters thrown at them so apparently not.
This place is alright. The tables weren't clean with ketchup on them
Staining my friends shirt. No waitresses to the table at all, when ordering at the bar there's long waits while the staff appears to goof off. I could have probably given 3 stars had they not decided to arbitrarily make a 2 drink minimum for my friend.
Loud, smelly and not all that good.
Everyone knows not to expect culinary excellence from jolly ole England. They do other things well, like cricket and colonizing Third World countries, for example, but not so much dining. The Bulldog, however, hits the spot. I had a huge cobb salad after diving one day and a decent omlete (choose three ingredients from a long list) the next day. Â Cool UK expat servers remember your order and don't mind special requests.
Overall it is like hanging out at your crusty old English Uncle's house, with blurry TVs playing (American) football, an ancient dart board being used by more crusty white hairs, decent beer selection, all in weathered but comfortable surroundings. The only difference is that here you will also mingle with divers recounting stories after dropping off gear at Bamboo Reef across the street, young locals in for a pint, and old locals trying to snog the cute but tough Irish and English bartenders.
Well, due to the fact that I have been starting off my nights here, I gotta say this place is great. Â Not excessively overcrowded like the Brit, and those who do come are usually here to drink and/or socialize. Â I usually dont have to worry about dudes wanting to beef, so it is definitely a good place to chill out.
Of course, there arent as much dudes here probably because there are not so much girls that come in here. Â As a single guy it sucks, but then again, I have already found out that Montey sucks as far as the whole dating scene goes, or I am really ugly, or i just have no clue where are the good girls are. Â I prefer the first, but you can call it how you see it.
I guess it doesnt help that I am able to walk easily from my apartment to here. Â So for me at least, stumbling home from here is a lot less treacherous than making the walk of doom from the Brit or Monty Live down past Taco Bell trying to catch a cab.
